- burke, on 10/12/2007, -10/+77Maybe I should have put Ubuntu in the title.... ;)
- Detritus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+55Ahh good, first sex offenders... now Linux users.
I can rest easier knowing my children are safe! - kodek, on 10/12/2007, -4/+45All the info you put in there will be public. Watch out.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+38Do we have to wear an arm band and be herded into "detention" camps? :(
- noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -5/+34Like that's so hard?
- uberwaboose, on 10/12/2007, -6/+31I think that this is secretly a plan by Microsoft to hunt down and kill every proud Linux user.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+30or low ICQ number
- Handcannons, on 10/12/2007, -6/+28or a low IQ number
- Ssullivan, on 10/12/2007, -8/+26This site is older than digg...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22you mean "not at all" ?
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17I just have to point out the irony of "registering" as a Linux user when one of the big reasons why people use Linux is so they don't have to register (or activate ;) ) as a user.
- t3rr0rz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18low steamid's are worth money. go look on ebay
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Actually, if that count includes server users, then it's fine.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Though they do allow you to choose to hide your e-mail address, or enter one that you wish to be displayed while hiding your real one.
# 283733 - cartwheels, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Pfft. Washing is like virus protection. Us Linux users just don't need it.
- Cypheros, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7no, if that count includes servers, I would say it might even be on the low side..
- Lobster, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12"Where am I?"
"In the Village."
"What do you want?"
"Information."
"Whose side are you on?"
"That would be telling.... We want information. Information. INFORMATION."
"You won't get it."
"By hook or by crook, we will."
"Who are you?"
"The new Number 2."
"Who is Number 1?"
"You are Number 6."
"I am not a number — I am a free man!"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Prisoner - racazip, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10If we're counting geek points, it should be lower number == more geek points.
- Goner, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Coming soon: Linux Genuine Advantage
- Iandefor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7"I just have to point out the irony of "registering" as a Linux user when one of the big reasons why people use Linux is so they don't have to register (or activate ;) ) as a user."
The idea's just to keep track of the number of Linux users and isn't at all obligatory. And it's so far out of the same ballpark as activation that you couldn't really compare one to the other. - eggo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7no, no, no... lower number -> more geek points
- EvilPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@airmann90
http://counter.li.org/cgi-bin/runscript/display-person.cgi?user=912
"Person 912 is removed from the count because the record is too old.
Try logging in to restore the record." - jbus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Oh God! You're right. Who knows how many Windows and Mac users registered just to fool us in to thinking that they are using Linux and maybe some confused users accidentally registered thinking that they use Linux when they really don't. You are definitely on to something.
- brettalton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Interesting to see that most people that go to this site use Windows...
http://counter.li.org/awstats/awstats.pl?config=gimel.counter.li.org&output=osdetail
But at least they use Firefox... http://counter.li.org/awstats/awstats.pl?config=gimel.counter.li.org&output=browserdetail
Original stats page: http://counter.li.org/awstats/awstats.pl?config=gimel.counter.li.org - jbus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5This is the number of users that have voluntarily registered at this particular website, NOT the number of total Linux users. The number of actual Linux users is likely in the tens of millions.
- tybris, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3In a monolithic Operating System like Linux the kernel IS the Operating System. Linux is not any less of an Operating System because it is distributed without user appliications such as a shell. It is up to 'distributions' to add those.
- kimastergeorge, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10370010... wow, I'm pretty close to you
Ha, ha, check it out: on the portland list, I'm directly above Linus Torvalds himself :-) http://counter.li.org/reports/place.php?place=US%3AOr%3APortland - supersocialist, on 10/12/2007, -14/+16Register? Yeah, right--you chumps are going to be the first against the wall when Microsoft rules the world!
- jsilva, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3/me searching geek girls in my city. Thanks Linux Counter :D
- krbvroc1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You have to remember that the counter started back in 1993. Back then it was very unique to be a Linux user. I think I was using 0.99 kernel. I remember using Trans-meta distribution and also buying distributions from Walnut Creek. A 'please count yourself' email message would be in your pine/mail mailbox when you installed your distribution. My number is < 10000.
- zedwards, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Please tell me they didn't start the numbering at 1?!? That site has already lost any sort of credibility for geekiness.
- Blitzenn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I suspected the same when I saw that after registration they send you a special membership kit that contains the materials necessary to tattoo the number in your forearm for "..easing your experience with customer support." Is that what they calle dit that last itme someone pulled that trick?
- vtrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1they must have read your post here :) The design has been updated !
- steelmaverick, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Register or Die.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1426552 Yup,I'm still in their logs....Still using Linux.
- benplaut, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3yes, 1
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7well, considering the number of computers in the world, I'd say it's maybe a little high, but not insanely so.
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2What if your number was below 100? It would mean you've been using Linux for more than a decade. That has to count for something.
- sbakker, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Heh, I did register 11 years and two weeks ago.
#18675 - dohidied, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Now I really want to get the network working on my Linux machine. :)
- Aninhumer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3If you just change it to "You are, Number 6" it all makes sense!
- airmann90, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4I'm number 912. Signed up ages ago. But yeah, there was an ubuntu specific counter posted here on digg about a month ago, well worth searching back for.
- 7thCommander, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2That site needs a redesign, it's not 1996 anymore.
Although it serves a good purprose, such a site should look nice enough so that if non-Linux people stumble upon it they are visually impressed and will feel like looking into Linux. - catoutfit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1http://counter.li.org/cgi-bin/certificate.cgi/1 - Linus
- klang, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1(lower number = more geek points) .. that's an assignment or simply true! No geek points for you!
- Markie1006, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Yea, this works.
I registered a loooong time ago and didn't know I had to login periodically to keep it active. Also I'd registered with a work address I had at the time (several jobs ago).
They did a great job of retrieving my ID and resetting the email address.
#77297 - championchap, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1that was posted ages back now wasnt it?
- ddales, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7Yup, mention good about Ubuntu and get Green Thumbed like a world champion. On the dark side, say something bad about Ubuntu and get Red Thumbed like a Justin Timberlake video.
- razei, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2#428429.
Now go ahead and digg me down. -
