- atdigg, on 10/10/2007, -1/+60Game vendors think the same, if this guy swiches to Linux then we are going to build games for Linux.
- Panther37, on 10/17/2007, -2/+50I thought the UNREAL series was Linux friendly from day one.
- OutThisLife, on 10/10/2007, -7/+51UT3 ftw.
- amfantasy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+45I thought it didn't have DRM. I have a copy of ut2004 and the dvd comes with a Linux binary, and I believe the binary is drm free
- t3soro, on 10/10/2007, -1/+36except this is a linux client.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+37DRM and anything don't work well together.
- superyounan1, on 10/17/2007, -3/+36bravo.
If your computer can run it and you use linux, go out and buy it so we show the industry theres a real market for linux games and software. - ers35, on 10/10/2007, -3/+29You can:
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=v ... - darkphenox, on 10/10/2007, -8/+33Now if every game dose this, I would switch completely to Linux.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+26Needing the disk to play is NOT DRM.
- daftman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+23Yep so in order to break the catch-22 one side must take a risk.
- D3koy, on 10/17/2007, -6/+27As soon as I can play Counter Strike Source on Linux I will never boot into Windows ever again...This is a step in that direction...
- gamelord12, on 10/17/2007, -1/+19Only problem with that is that the Windows version is in the same box. I get what you're trying to say, but without some sort of installed spyware, there's no way to know which OS is running the game when someone buys it.
- hexydes, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20Cool, Epic just ensured a sale from me.
- blaaguuu, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18No.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+19Ahh, Vista. Microsoft's latest version of Windows Millennium.
- zmjone2992, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16it is, usually you have to download a linux installer/ launcher seperately though, this one is on the game disc
- Kreuzader, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16It was known there was a Linux client, not that it was in the retail package.
- dpjames, on 10/17/2007, -0/+13thanks UT, you just got a customer
- jorgepblank, on 10/17/2007, -0/+13I agree, don't torrent/pirate it. The few (Compared to Windows customers) who are on Linux should show the industry that there is a market for Linux games, but they won't know that if you torrent/pirate it. I encourage all of you who are going to get it to run on Linux to buy it, after all, it's not often that truly great games appear on Linux.
I, myself, am definitely going to buy that. UT2K4 was awesome, this will be even better. - BugMeNot2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13UT2004 used to need the DVD in the drive (hence the "Play Disc"), but it was removed with a patch.
- LinuxKitty, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14Outstanding! I will pre-order it -- this deserves support.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -6/+18You like DRM?
- pchi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13who needs UT3 when you're still playing UT99?!
- RogueJediX, on 10/17/2007, -0/+11Almost. Unreal II requires cedega or wine. Every other entry, though, is Linux friendly.
- jacenat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11pirating ut was never really an option was it?
it's only real fun beein played online against other players. no way you can do that without buying the game. - Bootes, on 10/17/2007, -0/+11Publisher requires DRM and disc needed in tray, but Epic always removes it in the first update.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11wine is not a solution--it works if you _really_ had to play... native port would be a lot better
- hexydes, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Yes, but the industry will look at game sales for the genre, and if the games that support Linux have a statistically higher volume of sales, then they will hopefully draw the obvious conclusion from that...
- Po0py, on 10/17/2007, -0/+9For those who don't know: WarTourist is Jeff Morris, Senior Producer of Unreal Tournament 3 at Epic Games.
- bonkerz990, on 10/17/2007, -8/+16This is not surprising because the UT engine is very portable in fact the only difference is the core engine itself. On UT2004, leaving the core dll/exe files alone I was able to copy over all my maps, mods and game settings from Windows to Linux and it ran on Linux perfectly and even with better frame-rate I jumped from 30 to FPS on my old Radeon 9200se, but personally I don't use Linux much anymore I prefer Vista I find it much more efficient but that's only because I have good hardware.
- atdigg, on 10/10/2007, -6/+14estvir, what's your problem with Linux? If you don't like Linux stories remove them from your feeds.
- X1pher, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Well the Unreal Tournament series has had ports from the start. The original was done by Loki games, and after they went under icculus (who previously worked at Loki) continued by porting UT200X and also worked on porting UT3 to Linux (and I think the UE 3 engine in general).
- daftman, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11He can't. he's one of those who uses Linux but has to say something different about Linux. You know, like fkr3, the typical, "I want to be original" type of guy. Sadly, he ends up being exactly the same as those "I want to be original" type of guys.
- superyounan1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7we you play online i'm sure client info is collected. other games do it, and i think steam asks users if its ok to collect more detailed system specs anonymously.
i figure if they're going through the trouble of porting the game to other OSs, they'll probably have a way to find out if it was worth the effort. - dpjames, on 10/17/2007, -1/+8yah, too bad indeed, why not have them both installed like everyone else?
- AlexMax, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8So will it have mislabeled CD's like UT2003?
- felderado, on 10/17/2007, -0/+7OpenGL surpasses DX in many, many ways. The only thing DX has over OpenGL is that it can be "easier" and quicker to get things up and running
- zmjone2992, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7you mean source game, because tons of steam games don't work in linux
- djGentoo, on 10/17/2007, -0/+6Exactly. If you're too dumb to dual-boot, we don't care.
- anshuman, on 10/17/2007, -0/+5Nicee. Thanks Epic......this deserves to be ordered by Linux users :).
- Bootes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5UT has included a Linux binary for many many years, so nothing has changed over the years.
- kingborel, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Hang on... there's a Linux exe in the box?
- s1mph0ny, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5IIRC, the play disc was not required for playing on the linux client.
- Dempf, on 10/17/2007, -0/+5I want double jump! And a UT editor Linux port!
- darkphenox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5But some of did take the risk, If I can get a game on Linux right when it comes out, then I buy it if not I get it for Windows
- KUKBAHLAM, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I can't say when it happened, but at some point an update did away with the disk requirement.
