- kazamx, on 10/25/2007, -4/+115This is good news. One of the things holding Linux back is a lack of games. Only a few days ago EVE Online decided to make a Linux port of their game. Lets hope that it starts a trend.
Even if games developers don't want to make a full port maybe they could lend a hand to the people at Wine to get their game Wine compatable quickly. - Crazymaniacc, on 10/16/2007, -6/+4629 diggs and allready frontpage? It's official, I don't understand a thing about the system.
- monkeyhero, on 10/10/2007, -1/+35UT2k4 has a linux installer that comes with the game. It's not much of a surprise that this version will be the same way if you ask me.
- dougbarrett, on 10/10/2007, -0/+28A part of me really wishes Epic made Starcraft 2 so it would be guaranteed to be native on Linux :-/
- st3vo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+28Thank you again as always Epic!
- Salgat, on 10/16/2007, -1/+28Unreal 3 and Quake Wars on Linux should hold me over for a while.
- SomaSynth, on 10/16/2007, -0/+23If a game is initially developed with OpenGL, there isn't much at all to port. It will be a better world once OGL3 starts being taken up by developers.
- bagboyrebel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18there are plenty of games that don't run on linux but have linux servers
- pixelmixer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19You dont do good sarcasm.
- killercow, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15I think i've read an article at ars once stating that the epic crew develop on linux (like most of the licensee's) and release the windows version when the are done purely because of the market share it has.
- rolosworld, on 10/16/2007, -0/+14I was expecting nothing less... this confirms I will buy it.
- ali3n, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14if epic games can produce and develop such huge releases supporting linux, mac and windows whats everyone else's excuse? It's pretty sad to see other game developers failing to meet your mark of excellence for supporting other common platforms. Thanks epic! You guys are the best.
- victorc26, on 10/16/2007, -4/+18That shouldn't be something to be proud of....
- GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Clients and servers are different things. You don't need a working client to get a working server.
- loxx500, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12The unreal engine will run on linux, that means that we could possibly see a few more titles.
- chris9902, on 10/16/2007, -13/+23Linux now has 100% more games than Macs
- Phocion55, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11True. But it will quell the annoying repetitive "Linux has no games" argument........for a few days at least.
- ShogunWarPig, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12wine ftw?
- hassanchop13, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11there are things more important?
- Tippis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Like all good game engines, it will have a console, so yes ;P
- npsken, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Not game related, but I hope Adobe catches on. Yes, there are open source alternatives, but really, they aren't as good.
- christopher, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10While i can't speak for them, i would imagine that there are valid reasons why they are digging you down. Don't get your feelings hurt.
Available games for a platform most certainly do affect OS adoption. It may not be an important factor to you but it is for many people. As far as your other points, I don't think they are all that valid. Yes there are people in the linux community who lack social skills or are biased. So what? They hardly have a monopoly on that. What you call shattered some call perspectives, preferences, and options. Questionable implementation? I'm not sure what you are referring to. Linux is a very solid implementation of a Unix-like OS. False sense of desktop ability? Well, it's constantly improving and does a good job for many. Incompetent users? Oh, I see - you were trolling. Well, I was bored. - GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Most companies that develop with OGL use Linux. Windows can be totally retarded about getting a development environment set up.
- GMorgan, on 10/16/2007, -0/+9They use multiple back ends. Most games engines worth bothering with will utilise both OGL and D3D (9 and 10 now). Even they will go as far as testing which OGL versions are available and altering the code path to account for that. The result of this is that Windows implementations of OGL (which are limited to 1.4, which misses out on a whole host of useful technologies including server buffers) don't hold back the engine when running on systems that support OGL 2.1 (like Linux).
- CCmachined, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8try americas army, doom 3 and http://sauerbraten.org if you get bored :D
- LeeVal, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Epic has always made linux ports for its Unreal series. Graphics is always an issue on Linux in terms of how good the drivers are
- 4DFX, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9shad0walker has a point. Epic Games have always been there for Linux users.
No need to sound all negative like that though. - Anoobis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9No. Epic have done UT for linux before I believe.
- starsky51, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Exclusive leaked screenshot!!11:
-= Welcome to Unreal Tournament 3 for Linux =-
* You are in a large arena. Two big blokes with sniper rifles are training their sights on you.
> GO NORTH_ - Qumahlin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8You can already run WoW pretty much flawlessly using Wine, Cider, Caldera, etc
- Megatog615, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8SDL?
- alienSkull, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7well it also has to do with the speed of the digging.. this story was not only the first item on the frontpage but the last one on the top ten when I saw it, so there must have been alot of people digging it quickly
- i4mt3hwin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Blizzard has done a good job in the past making games on OSX, hopefully in time, blizzard will make a few for Linux as well.
- NihilFist, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7"And slowly, but surely, they drew their plans against us..."
The more the better :P - kris33, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Epic, id and Blizzard FTW!
- MeneerR, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6True. MS doesn't support it. BUT: with NVidia and Ati you actually get an opengl driver installed on windows. Nobody needs MS, not even on their own platform.
- mojaam, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Must agree, Adobe Photoshop, Flash, Illustrator, and the rest of their softwares are really top notch and hard to duplicate. It's the main reason I can't fully switch at least.
- Tippis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Epic has always been about having options. Heck, just look at Unreal (the first one). It featured no less than 6 different rendering APIs: DirectX, Glide, S3 Metal, OpenGL, and a wtfawexome!1 software rendering mode...
Sure, it was back in the days when each and every gfx card manufacurer had its own API, but rarely anyone supported more than one or two of them (usually Glide and/or DirectX). UnrealEngine did them all. - MrPig, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Also there's the obvious fact that UE3 (the engine) supports Mac, windows, and Linux so there shouldn't be much (if any) porting involved. This WAS expected; if it ended up some other way, I would have been surprised. Epic Games isn't a stupid company, they know what there fans want.
- brundlefly76, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I dugg you down because your comment read poorly and was just lame.
- HAKdragon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Also remember that they showed the UT3 engine for the PS3 awhile back and the PS3 uses OpenGL as graphics API.
- lowerlogic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Yay, I was not expecting this! While I loved playing UT2004 on Linux, I was sadly expecting Unreal 3 to be DX10 exclusive for the DX10 features and thus not work on Linux, but I'm really glad I was wrong and glad to see that the Unreal developers still care about Linux.
Now if only Valve and Blizzard could start making their games run natively on Linux or OSX, I'd never need to use Windows again ( HL2, CS:S, and Starcraft, all kinda work in Wine, but it's just not the same). - ryanwarnersteel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Even as a non-linux user who won't even buy this game, this is really cool news. Break the windows monopoly on gaming.
- Nossie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4just not audigy 2 or any of the other slightly older drivers working
Its a sad sad SAD state of affairs when the Audigy 2 ZS Platnium is 95% supported in Linux and say 30-40% supported in Vista? - noerrorsfound, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4America's Army hasn't had linux clients since version 2.5.
- Yage2006, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4That's Awesome .
Wish they all would do that. Then many more people could ditch windows. - championchap, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4My favourite in the list was "Incompitent Users"
Every OS has them, I wouldn't call that a fault with Linux.
Nor is it crazy to think that it works on the Desktop. I actually prefer my Ubuntu install to Windows.. I just happen to be Adobes bitch.
The shattered community of developers is right in a sense i suppose. There is no "Linux" community forum where all your problems get solved. But there is a much more focused seperate community for everything else.
I get what you mean though.. sure there are more important things to worry about than games. But it's not like instead of developing the kernel a bunch of people decided to port Unreal 3. These guys make games, and it's cool that they want it to be played by as many people as possible. That shows a real pride in what you do. -
