- izaic3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+108Great, now you can emulate game boy games on your... gameboy.
- TheThirdWheel, on 10/12/2007, -5/+69It's not fake, I've got Ubuntu on my Speak N' Spell.
- heavensblade23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+56Is this real? From what I remember the GB's screen wasn't high enough resolution to be displaying the text shown on the screen.
- pumacub, on 10/12/2007, -3/+46The vertical resolution of a GameBoy is 144 pixels. These pictures show 24 lines per screen, that's 6 pixels per line (including padding). Ummm... fake.
- DankLogic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31look how the gameboy itself is out of focus but the text is crystal clear.
- Tweekster, on 10/12/2007, -9/+38is shop the new leet word or something?
Is it that difficult to use the correct word, photoshop... - GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27Can I run Apache on there though.
- astatine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24Same reason people build model steam engines as small as possible, or try to beam Wifi connections as far as they can - because it's a challenge.
- o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20That's nothing. I got Linux running on a dead hamster once.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23this is a photoshop
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16It's also worth noting that the PCMCIA card plugged into the thing is an old 14.4 modem, not a cartridge.
There's no way in hell you'll ever get a gameboy to boot off a modem, even if you built some magic pcmcia -> gameboy bridge.
What the ***** is that thing on the upper left, anyway? Some kind of speaker? - tylerni7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Uhhh where is Ubuntu mentioned?
- MikeKnoop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Also where in the world is that keyboard ribbon going?
-Mike - cartwheels, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17@matt.rubin
Hey, at least the Linux n00bs are running Linux. - da404lewzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14lol, site powered by GAMP :P
- barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14http://www.linuxtoday.com/infrastructure/2001050601120PSCYBD
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13...Anyone notice the battery/power light is off?
- KevinLiu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Fake! The GB's screen was definitely not that high resolution. Even if it were, the focus of this photo is all wrong.
Not to mention the "hacked Game Boy cartridge" is a USR 14.4 PCMCIA modem. Nice try :) - duster, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19if 'shop' is just the new 'leet' word, then we better not shorten televesion to tv or anything else like in everyday speech.
fax, the new 1337 word for facsimile... - INHUMANITY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11But it has dot matrix with stereo sound!!!
- cartwheels, on 10/12/2007, -10/+20This is a shop. I can tell by some of the pixels and from seeing a number of shops in my time.
- usernameistaken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9it's quite apparent it's photoshopped if you compare it to a real gameboy. the pixel resolution is small and not nearly enough to display the full listing of text shown in the screenshot.
- capiCrimm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I'm confused though... doesn't "chop" have a meaning as well. Or maybe I'm using a non-standard form of English?
How about "fake"... it's the same length and we don't have to add any more words to our language. :D - Tux42, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13@0siris
Ubuntu is a distribution of Linux.
Apache is a program that runs as a daemon.
I am guessing GMorgan does not "mean ubuntu". - DankLogic, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12yeah i don't think gameboys take PCMCIA cards.
- kidtux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Even if it's not a fake with all the extra hardware needed to run that it's more like the Gameboy is used only as a display
- MrPhelps, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Thirded. That's why there is a question mark in the title of the page I guess.
- EGOvoruhk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9"if 'shop' is just the new 'leet' word, then we better not shorten televesion to tv or anything else like in everyday speech.
fax, the new 1337 word for facsimile..."
You're a moron. The other examples you used have a single meaning. The word "shop" has been used forever, so when you start using it as a slang, people are going to get confused. At least use a word that makes sense, like "chop". Photoshop may not have a 'C' in it, but facsimile doesn't have an 'X'. It makes a hell of a lot more sense than using "shop" - marcan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8you can actually have 6px tall fonts, I used to use one on my 640x480 Zaurus PDA (SL-6000L) just for kicks - you could fit a helluva lot of (almost unreadable without a magnifying glass) text on that screen (pixels on the PDA are about 2x smaller per axis than those on a regular PC TFT).
However, I agree that this is fake. First I don't think that the GB has nearly enough RAM (that's the only limiting factor really - you could emulate anything on top of anything turing-complete given enough memory, says turing). Second, that text is waaay too readable (the 6px font was MUCH worse). Third, that's a freaking MODEM there. It *could* be a dialin into a real unix server using a GB as a dumb terminal, which would be more reasonable except that using a regular serial modem would probably be a better idea (how on earth do you interface PCMCIA to a GB slot?), you'd still need some sort of card to hold the program (and regular flash cards won't do, it has to be NOR flash or some sort of flash+sram system to boot on GB/GBC/GBA), and the font size thing still applies.
Veredict: BUSTED - sudonim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7More like Speak like the Devil.
- maxkelley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Sure! Take a PCMCIA modem, hold a gameboy over the top, and get a friend with l33t photoshop skillz!
- jsaya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"The 14.4k modem is fake, I did that just for fun, and its not the Gameboy that runs Unix, but my laptop, which is connected to the Gameboy screen." --rewben
was gonna bust out my flashlinker! oh wait for GBA... :D - zane411, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Someone should get some video of that, thats crazy
- gruvsf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4about as real as the iChat mobile phone from Apple. Buried as inaccurate.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Uhhh where is Ubuntu mentioned?"
Its not its just Robohoe is a ***** ***** - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah, that was the first thing to tip me off.
- motang, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Well if there is flash memory then I don't see why not.
- Chairmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"It's not fake, I've got Ubuntu on my Speak N' Spell."
Now there's an idea. Let's get on that. - CausticNoise, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Exactly. How many props would you give someone you knew if they pulled that off? It's useless, but the technicial skill required to pull it off is worthy of some accolades (if it's real, that is).
- kayakto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3BUT IT IS FUNNY!!!
author did not submit this stroy to digg himself, dont blame him :-) - xsuite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this is totally fake but it is possible to get Unix on a gameboy,
http://www.kernelthread.com/publications/gbaunix/ - matt.rubin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8well thats a pretty good shop if it is
- forgiste, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Okay, the guy already admitted it was fake. Read the comments above.
Besides, the power switch on an old GameBoy wouldn't allow a PCMCIA card to be sticking out of the cartridge slot. - heavensblade23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Verified Fake done for fun. End Of Story.
- Sutrannu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The gameboy screen may be low-res ("res"... is that 1337?), but on the other hand, the GB is, itself, relatively HUGE. Could be a GB case with a handheld inside.
Well... it could be! But, it's not - Ricapar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Check the EXIF data for the images.

http://www.strangehorizons.com/2004/20040405/badger.shtml - WhiskerTheMad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yep. I remember seeing a GBA used as a web server once, I believe it ran contiki.
- MethosVk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Most obvious sign of the photoshop:
Notice the long line 4 up from the bottom.
In the second to last image it shows:
..., type "show ?" for list
then in the next image when he had to rotate his inserted image it can only fit:
..., type "show ?" for lis - SteveyDevey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They're still using Photoshop 4? What year is this? :)
