- BiffToffington, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What a horrible and badly written article. It needs serious editing, and serious correction.

this is cool, it has a css styleseet on it. - spinesplitter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i run "ubuntu breezy"
gnome pwns, i can set up my own commands on "metacity" for just about every task the computer does, with G-conf, i hardly ever touch a mouse.
theres a localhost proxy that lets you add number tags to links on webpages along some randomly genererated command.

- Ssullivan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"haha, true. and how many digg users actually operate on a linux machine?"
I do. - drag, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm using Linux also, pretty much exclusively at home.
It's a very good operating system, IMO. Stable and has lots of supported software. Also I value my personal freedom.. fairly 'libertarian' sort of person. So like it for that reason also.
This article should be use full for anybody using Linux for more then just casual stuff. I figure if you depend on lots of systems or whatnot then it's a good idea to keep a eye on the development lists so that you'd have a good idea of new features or changes that may be coming along in the next couple years. Or reading up stuff about security vulnerabilities or security enhancing features like gcc stack smashing protection patches. Stuff like this, even if you don't understand all of it (lord knows I don't) can be use full for more easily following along discussions when they go very technical.
And although this article doesn't really go into things that are going to really matter to most people, even if they run a bunch of machines. Although usually with articles like this from IBM they go in series so later articles will have more use full general-interest stuff that may build on things that they are talking about with this.
Memory management itself is very complex and is important to understand, at least on a fairly high level (higher level then this article..) f you want to get the most out of your hardware and software...
(seeing Windows people discussing the merits of different 'virtual memory' sizes and their impact on performance is a good indication that more people should be interested in things like this) - kaoru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm in the computer labs at uni on Linux, I run Linux at home, and I am currently working on a project where I am hacking the kernel for memory management... This is very very dugg :D
- barthosch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ahh so now I understand the Linux Memory Model, how does it help me preventing KDE to crash all the time?
- stimpack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This looks really interesting and somthing I would like. Its a shame I am dumb and don't understand it then ;/
- Jonty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hehe. kde is best, evry1 noez ppl who uses GNOME is just a n00borz !!11!1!!11
Seriously though, I use Linux and KDE, and love it. I've had no problems, bar a slow processor (700 mHz. I went on a 3 gHz machine and was used to the speed of KDE running on it, it seems, and crashed it. It was running Windows. Proved to me Linux and KDE is much faster than Windows.) - JohnTheLutheran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Level: Introductory"
Eek. I await the "Intermediate" and "Advanced" articles with fear and trembling... - cmdrNacho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Im with stimpack, im too dumb
- nouse66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow, i never expected to see so many gentoo users. count me in too...
- martinus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"haha, true. and how many digg users actually operate on a linux machine?"
Probably not many. 2 years ago I have banned Windows from my harddisk, and am a happy Gentoo user ever since. - BarNone49, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ubuntu rules all...
- peepott, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Haha and no comments dealing with anything technical related to the article - since it is truely a complex subject. And my comment lacks this as well! So just another worthless observation. Dug it - even if they could have had a few more diagrams for those of us who like to know and understand, despite the everyday usefullness of said article.
- MaDsKiLLz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0linux is damn close to being good for a desktop : i've been using it for 2+ years and it has matured alot in that time. but before we start a flame war lets just leave it at that
- sound, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This article seems to be about the Linux memory model on INTEL x86 architecture systems. Linux is ported to and runs on many different CPUs, does it use the same memory model on all of them ?
Also, I though with the introduction of the i386 Intel gave the OS a way to get out from under the brain damaged 'segment' based memory model, please tell me I misread the article (I just skimmed it for now) and that the Linux memory model is *not* based on Intel x86 segments... - theBlueNIbble, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i am using a Linux box , running FC4. and i am sure there are a lot of Digg users using *nix.
- hardran3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Some of us. I'm posting this from lynx running on a gentoo box. On a terminal on a Mac OS X box. Lots of unix.
- hardran3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Finally, more linux stuff. sweet.
- njbraun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1How the thell id 45 people digg this??? There's probably not even 45 people in the entire US who would actually WANT to read this entire thing for pleasure.
- bariswheel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I love my winxp for all around computing
I love my linux boxes for signature tasks (one file server, one encoding server, no KDE+GNOME, one database server...)
bottom line is linux hasn't matured enough to be a good all-around box. Windows is good for this because it is a "bag of drivers."
Until Linux gets the leverage of the market to be one of those, it's only going to be good for 'signature' models. - mincua, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0hey .. looks like yoh haven't tried linux in a long time on a desktop ... linux is now a good workstation OS and has all the drivers you need .. you can even play windows games on it ...
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0haha, true. and how many digg users actually operate on a linux machine?
- bailey3003, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0it doesnt tell where to plug the ram into. I cant seem to fit my edo ram into my new emachine. I had some ram from an old computer but i dont know where to stick it into. anyone?
This memory guide stinks! Who is with me on this one?
