- zeromancer, on 11/16/2007, -3/+67"Matt Cutts opens"
isn't that a bit redundant?
/badjoke - ChromaVita, on 11/16/2007, -1/+34So did Gateway fire you, or did you quit?
- inactive, on 11/16/2007, -6/+38This is a fabulous step in the right direction. So many people are left out of the loop on things simply because many computers are too expensive or too complicated. Now there is a cheap, barebones system that is easy to use and will never get a virus.
- NoobieDoobieDo, on 11/16/2007, -3/+31Who is Matt Cutts ?
/Duck - schestowitz, on 11/16/2007, -4/+26They have it organised quite nicely. It's reassuring to know that Matt Cutts will be using GNU/Linux (at times) while fighting those spammers. Google employees often use Goobuntu, not gOS.
- eaasness, on 11/16/2007, -0/+21Looks like you can buy it from www.newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8 ...
- inactive, on 11/16/2007, -1/+19If your just going to surf the Internet this system is all you need.
- kevinmotel, on 11/16/2007, -2/+18This is perfect for my aunts' house.
- TeacherOfHeroes, on 11/16/2007, -1/+16Wow, all that for only DOUBLE the price?
Clearly they should do what you say - even when they can't afford it. - TopherT, on 11/16/2007, -0/+14Why pay double when you can get more than what you need for 99% of what most people use their computers for.
- Narpas, on 11/16/2007, -2/+15I agree. With the newest Ubuntu release (I installed it fresh), and, presumably, the newest gOS, my wireless card was literally a matter of, "Hey, do you mind if we download the software to extract the drivers from the card to make it all work?". My printer was "Plug in, verify that it was the HP310, click okay, wait for drivers to download, print test page." Anything natively installed on Gutsy hasn't so much as sneezed towards the command line, and it's really, really nice not fighting with installation discs. I'm betting that mainstream peripheral installation is a non-issue for gOS.
- Mohonri, on 11/16/2007, -0/+10The CPU is a VIA 1.5GHz C7. So it's not particularly powerful. It's also very efficient, so it doesn't even need a fan on the heatsink, depending on the case configuration. Expect this to be very, very quiet.
- eaasness, on 11/16/2007, -0/+9Sorry found them http://www.desktoplinux.com/news/NS7114714037.html I'm impressed by the max 20W power consumption
At the heart of the gPC TC2502 is an energy-efficient 1.5GHz, VIA C7-D processor. This CPU draws less than 2W on average (with a maximum of 20W). Operating at a mere 28dB, the gPC also ranks as the quietest Everex desktop computer ever produced. It also includes 512MB of system memory, 80GB hard disk drive and DVD-ROM/CD-RW optical drive. The system also comes with six USB 2.0 ports; an RJ45 Ethernet port; an RJ11 port; and a serial and parallel port. - marx2k, on 11/16/2007, -0/+9The same reason why I don't pay double for a cell phone with more features than mine has (calling people, text messaging, checking my EMail)
I don't NEED to do anything more and for that, my phone is perfect. Same with the general population out there. - TeacherOfHeroes, on 11/16/2007, -1/+10And there are some things in windows that require users to edit the registry. Like with Linux's CLI problems, almost no-one will run into that situation unles they go looking for it, but it still makes for great flamebait.
By far the most common source of problems that require a CLI to fix are hardware issues, but since the hardware is known before being shipped, this shouldn't be a problem.
The only common remaining sources of problems w.r.t. hardware would be things like printers, which as far as I can tell have actually been getting pretty good as of late. - JointheArmy, on 11/16/2007, -1/+10Since its target audience is for normal human beings - their words not mine - it doesn't need 3 GB of ram to run a word processor, myspace and gmail. Plus have you tried running gOS on an old computer? It runs fast as hell since it doesn't has so much unnecessary ***** running in the background like Windows.
- 298th_Scat, on 11/16/2007, -0/+8What does this have to do with google? Is google any way affiliated with this manufacturer? Or the OS other then it is a distro of linux that starts with the same letter as google?
- epimer, on 11/16/2007, -1/+8You know you've been reading too many Linux articles when your first thought on seeing the first photograph is that it's a screenshot of someone's Compiz Fusion cube.
- inactive, on 11/16/2007, -0/+7To be honest you are getting four times the performance but for the most part i dont care. the 200$ PC is good enough for browsing, MP3 and Videos so i wont mind getting it as a additional PC for my Office.
- ryan83189, on 11/16/2007, -3/+9I like the idea of selling cheap under powered systems , really. It makes the market affordable and brings a computer to everyone. Im not sure what to make of the google everything aspect. If they can take the principle of olpc to the adult market, ie cheap wifi sharing laptop and sell it at walmart , well the days of windows boxes are numbered.
- BoneheadFarker, on 11/16/2007, -0/+6Underpowered for Vista maybe, but it would be fine to run 2000 or XP. Though to be honest, I haven't used any version of Windows at home for about 9 months now. So I'd stick with Linux on it. Maybe switch it to Mythdora, slap an extra gig of memory in it, and put it under my TV, but I'd stick with Linux on it...
- GnuTzu, on 11/16/2007, -0/+6Yes and No; it doesn't exist outside of Google: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goobuntu
- HerbSolo, on 11/16/2007, -0/+6what exactly did you expect for 200 bucks?
- nastajus, on 11/16/2007, -2/+8400 > 200.
- macoafi, on 11/16/2007, -3/+9Install Amarok, Exaile, Rhythmbox, Gtkpod....yes, you can sync your iPod. No, you can't shop on iTunes with it because then Apple'd have to admit that their overpriced computers aren't the only way to escape Microsoft. Yes, you can install P2P software easily, like Deluge (for torrents) or GTK Gnutella or Limewire or Frostwire.
- marx2k, on 11/16/2007, -1/+6You say it's underpowered. But for the target audience, I don't think it's underpowered at all. You can say my XBox 360 is underpowered... but it does what it's supposed to do and nothing more. So it's not at all underpowered to do what it's designed to do.
- nastajus, on 11/16/2007, -0/+5Can. But has it been done for the masses in a nicely package for the masses of nomadic computer users who don't know that stuff?
- Gavagai80, on 11/16/2007, -0/+5G stands for green.
- Jerky1312, on 11/16/2007, -1/+6The guy you are replying to.
- krnldmp, on 11/16/2007, -2/+7He forgot to mention that you still have to buy a copy of XP too, or at least load Linux manually.
- MarkOfTheDead, on 11/16/2007, -0/+5Glad to see you're finished having the runs.
- thefinger, on 11/16/2007, -2/+7better question: who cares?
- halofourteen, on 11/16/2007, -1/+6My understanding is that Google and gOS are two completely separate entities, and the only connection (besides similar naming) is the fact that gOS fills the computer up with Google products (which they may or may not be getting referral money on). I have a feeling that Google Search box in the top right corner of the OS is earning gOS/Everex some cash. Not that it's a bad thing...
- ryan83189, on 11/16/2007, -3/+7It's actual performance is probably just as good as that dell one. it doesnt have 400 megs of its ram holding a power hungry os. It is effecently coded, and lean. Most people use a computer for internet, business and entertainment. This gets it done. No bell or whistles.
- jvin248, on 11/16/2007, -3/+7It's underpowered to run bloated Windows... but it's fine for Linux. Most users just want an appliance to get on the Internet to look up things or chat and don't really care about the speed of the pc as their Internet connection continues to be the bottleneck.
- sleeknerve, on 11/16/2007, -1/+5and even more perfect for my grandparents house
- FLaw, on 11/16/2007, -0/+4ALT F4?
- inactive, on 11/16/2007, -1/+5If you don't understand how to use "/" then don't use it.
Everyone please stop digging him up? Your encouraging him.. - opnickc, on 11/16/2007, -1/+4Because this is cheaper and (in theory) easier for novice users (all the main stuff most people use computers for is sitting right there - word processor, youtube, wikipedia, google, etc.).
- stoodleysnow, on 11/16/2007, -0/+3Hear, hear.
- repustech, on 11/16/2007, -0/+3Yeah, I agree. The internet is run on something like 70% Linux web servers... I love Linux!
- simongzster, on 11/16/2007, -0/+3You know, there is a HUGE market out there for people who just use their PC for email and surfing the web. In fact, I'm willing to bet that those people buy their computers at walmart.
- pak314, on 11/16/2007, -0/+3I think it is the same spec as the motherboard mentioned here: http://www.thinkgos.com/products.html
- cptl, on 11/16/2007, -0/+3Go to the gOS site, you can buy the insides without the case for ~$60
- bhattsan, on 11/16/2007, -3/+6In a sweatshop? /runs
- Gavagai80, on 11/16/2007, -3/+6Because the cheapest from eMachines costs 50% more? You may as well ask "why not just buy an iMac?"
- sleeknerve, on 11/16/2007, -2/+5because its not linux
- Rezistik, on 11/16/2007, -0/+380 gig HD
1.5 GHZ Processor
512 mb of DDR2 Ram - repustech, on 11/16/2007, -0/+2eMachines are a joke. I own 2 computer repair shops and we get eMachines in all the time. They have this problem where the power supply goes bad and takes out the motherboard with it. I suppose it could be the other way around as well. Bottom line is that you are out $300-$400 when this happens, which seems to happen quite a bit. If you want a cheap quality PC, but an Acer.
- RockinRoel, on 11/16/2007, -3/+5"No, you can't shop on iTunes with it because then Apple'd have to admit that their overpriced computers aren't the only way to escape Microsoft."
Just in case you wonder, that's probably the thing you shouldn't have said. Other than that a reasonably informative comment. -
