- Spamcan, on 12/02/2007, -3/+38Sure, desktops, laptops, PDAs, cell phones, smart phones, tablet PCs and UMPCs are great, but I'm glad someone finally developed a pillow computer. With the Chumby I can remain connected in the short time between when I get into bed and fall asleep, hurray for never having to log off the internets!
- sparkmonkeyz, on 12/02/2007, -2/+30Did anyone notice in the video when the chumby says to drag the orange circle to the other side, he tries dragging the red one?
- niallabrown, on 12/02/2007, -1/+28I have been waiting for this idea to be turned in to a real device for quite some time. I cant wait to get one.
- siwasher, on 12/02/2007, -11/+35All the time the author was talking about design philosophy, what was in the box, the installation process, etc., I'm wondering what the hell this thing is supposed to DO! Finally got to it at the end of the post. Possibly, as in other Linux matters, you just have to know already, or you're not geeky enough. Or maybe if it has a swell design philosophy and is open source, it doesn't matter what it does.
- Smwbigboss, on 12/02/2007, -0/+18It's a tiny computer that you can do anything with. It has a touchscreen, wi-fi, etc.
You could just hack your Nintendo DS for most of these features. The Chumby is more powerful though and has 64MB of RAM, although it has to be plugged in at all times, which is a major downside. - geminitojanus, on 12/02/2007, -1/+18It's a widget player. Like Dashboard or Yahoo Widgets, but in alarm-clock form-factor. It's also incredibly hackable (all of its schematics are open source, as well as all of the software right up to the Flash player).
It's a really fun piece of hardware. - myFriendDerrik, on 12/02/2007, -1/+17This would be great for a web entrepreneur, just look at your web stats from bed. If the numbers are good, stay in bed all day.
I wish I were web entrepreneur. D: - Phocion55, on 12/02/2007, -1/+16You sir, have not lived.
- subgeniusd, on 12/02/2007, -0/+13Wish you would work on Flash 9 for Linux at night.
- nemesis256, on 12/02/2007, -1/+14I recently got one of these, it's a pretty cool device. The digg widget is quite cool and useful.
I just need to think of something to develop for it in Flash. - burke, on 12/02/2007, -0/+13Fun fact: Chumby is/was developed by Bunnie Huang (sp?), who played a big part in hacking the original Xbox.
- Sliver85, on 12/02/2007, -0/+13Yeah.
But the orange thing was an oval...
So, who knows - niallabrown, on 12/02/2007, -4/+16I thought it was obvious just from the one video what it does.
- Tomamama, on 12/02/2007, -0/+10I was sent one of these things in August. It's well-made, has a surprisingly decent speaker within it, and the fact that the hardware is completely open is pretty neat. The thing's even got an accelerometer and mic - I'm not sure how these will be used, but the fact that they exist is cool in itself.
However, since August I haven't done much with it but use it as an alarm clock and (occasionally) view widgets - which is growing old, since I haven't found any particularly neat widgets lately.
The point is: as a totally open device, Chumby is going to live or die by a community (or lack thereof). In its current state, it's got huge potential, and I sincerely hope that potential isn't wasted in the months to come. - tehAleksandrRox, on 12/02/2007, -3/+12Stop encouraging Kevin Rose!
- cwestpha, on 12/02/2007, -1/+9I own one of these and they are pretty cool. Has 2 alarms, programable snooze, can play music from your iPod, and great to stare at for those few moments as you try to will yourself out of bed. Have it displaying the weather, a traffic map of the area, and some news so I know what I am waking up to each morning.
- pizza, on 12/02/2007, -1/+9Unless I'm missing something, this thing only runs on AC power...no batteries at all...Kinda a deal breaker for me
- SyntraFTW, on 12/02/2007, -7/+14No offense, I mean I can't say I'd mind having one, But the N800 blows this thing out of the water if your over 10 years old.
- inactive, on 12/02/2007, -1/+8He wasn't necessarily saying that he was an Adobe employee developing Flash itself. More likely he meant that he develops in Flash at work.
- dhughes, on 12/02/2007, -0/+7 I noticed. Maybe he's colour blind.
- RoyalPwner, on 12/02/2007, -3/+10So...Awesome...
Must...Get... - DarkStalker, on 12/02/2007, -2/+8I've got Chumby working on my N800 right now. Have to run it as full screen, but it works well. For now, just requires the web browser, though we'll probably release a proper app in the near future.
- geminitojanus, on 12/02/2007, -1/+7They're shipping now, feel free to go grab one.
- subgeniusd, on 12/02/2007, -1/+7This is a much more comprehensive video intro:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAnXbPYex10&feature ... - shlolz, on 12/02/2007, -0/+6It acts as a speaker.
- krc1, on 12/02/2007, -0/+6"Making Waves?" Two blogger reviews with a total of 4 comments does not a wave make.
My prediction: They'll be on overstock.com a year from now for $39.95. - acceptab1euname, on 12/02/2007, -1/+7Its ok, man, calm down. Just take a few deep breaths, and gaze lovingly at the photo of Steve Jobs you have above your bed. It'll be alright.
- acceptab1euname, on 12/02/2007, -2/+7Yeah, what a great product!
"Access to the Chumby Network is FREE. No subscriptions to pay, no plans to sign up for. It's paid for by Chumby Industries and by sponsor companies who will be sending you widgets such as music, games, movie previews, customized alarm clocks, and special offers for products and prizes (called "Chumbooty" — coming soon), and who knows what else the future holds? Chumby Industries is 100% dedicated to keeping your widget channels new, intriguing, fun and FREE."
And you only have to pay $179US for the privilege! - dick-richardson, on 12/02/2007, -5/+10I don't know...my n800 does spreadsheets, vpn, gps, and podcasts, but I've never shaken a bunny head around the screen.
- boldfacelies, on 12/02/2007, -0/+4does anyone else feel like they're being directly marketed to in this advertisement->made digg post?
- edicius, on 12/02/2007, -0/+4Thanks, that was actually the whole point of my post. I don't think that it is ugly, or a bad product, it just dosen't compare design wise to anything apple makes today.
- cyborg, on 12/02/2007, -0/+4In case your wondering, it has a touchscreen, four buttons(one on each side, the leather looking things), and a motion sensor, at first I thought it was some sort of inert uncontrollable widget Television, it appears to be much more.
- acceptab1euname, on 12/02/2007, -1/+5Pretty much, yeah. Don't know why everybody's digging you down for it.
- niviche, on 12/02/2007, -0/+4From the article:
"The colour and texture of the bag reminded me of the khadi material popularised in India by Gandhi during the Freedom movement(of course I don’t know what material the bag is actually made of, but I am guessing it is environment friendly at least)."
Wow, now that's investigative journalism. Congratulations. - starkruzr, on 12/02/2007, -0/+4Personally, I'd way rather have an N810.
- ObeseSnake, on 12/02/2007, -0/+4It's not meant to be a PC or replace the functionality of a PC.
- hurben, on 12/02/2007, -0/+4haha! "centerpiece of a furby's living room" made me gag in laughter! - you are a funny moron
- subgeniusd, on 12/02/2007, -0/+4http://linuxbasics.org/forum/index.php
- ObeseSnake, on 12/02/2007, -0/+4Yeah they considered adding a battery but it would have raised the price by too much. Nothing is stopping you from hacking it and putting a rechargeable battery in it though.
- smrekar, on 12/02/2007, -0/+4could be an affordable Car PC many cool features.
- geminitojanus, on 12/02/2007, -0/+4Theoretically, you can, it's not that difficult. You can throw flash files on a USB keychain drive and they'll play from there too. The "tie in" to the .com service really isn't that tight.
- f00xx0riz3r, on 12/02/2007, -0/+3Enough with the diggvertisments already.
- mimps, on 12/02/2007, -0/+3you can manually put it in night mode if you want to use it as an alarm clock, but you are right, automatically switching it to night mode after say 10:00PM everyday would be convenient.
- DarkStalker, on 12/02/2007, -6/+9Those of you that have Nokia's Internet Tablets... a few of us are working on an app to bring Chumby to the tablets for free... so don't bother with a $175 box that does nothing else. :)
- iofthestorm, on 12/02/2007, -3/+6Haha, dugg because it's completely ridiculous but incredibly cool looking. Although for practical purposes I'd probably agree with a lot of the other people that an N800 would be more useful, although I don't think that has the motion sensor.
- sfcaptainrob, on 12/02/2007, -0/+3I don't get it, why not just go to a computer? Do we really need to be that connected that we have to wake up to the internet now? Or brush our teeth to it?
- mimps, on 12/02/2007, -0/+3Chumby can ripped open and lot of hack-projects can be created with its hardware. iPod can be connected to Chumby and can be used as external speakers. Chumby stands comfortable on its own on a bedside where N800 stands precariously on its brittle stand.
N800 kind of has 20 times more functionality than Chumby but it can never be a 100% replacement device for Chumby. - chrisutley, on 12/02/2007, -4/+7Dumby
- tavisjohn, on 12/02/2007, -1/+4It is dependant on an outside system... If Chumby.Com dies... THe device is useless.
It would have been cooler if you could also opt to run your own Chumby server. That way if the company goes under, you do not loose your news feeds and such. - codercode, on 12/02/2007, -1/+4I don't get it either...would people even buy that thing?
