Stop digging down valid points/warnings like these. :-p If sata compatibility is an issue, I want to know as much as possible about that, thankyouverymuch. I'd like to know which drives / controllers were having issues though.

You're wrong. It uses CD Shell [ http://www.cdshell.org ] to boot from FreeDOS and Linux images to perform different tasks.
CD Shell is not exactly a proprietary piece of software.
View the license agreement here: http://www.cdshell.org/download/license.html - UrsusMorologus, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19wtf are you idiots modding down truth for? the apps are all DOS, so it's a DOS CD, regardless of what is used for the CD boot sector. I mean, cdshell is cool, but it's not a freakign OS, and it's damn sure not linux like the OP said.
anyway... since you maroons are humming on cdshell... it's either dead or dying unfortunately, hasn't been updated in a year, and the dev isn't responding to email or posts. grub and isolinux are filling that void, but cdshell still beats both of them.
and ubcd is still a dos cd dammit - vexter, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Its a valid comment. It is NOT great software. Their are many boot disks that are better. Just try google
http://www.google.com/search?q=boot+cd&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official - mcgirt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Yea, Hiren's is the real ultimate boot cd.
- dunezone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8This actually isnt that bad, I use it to take down unknown windows passwords and HD diagnostics.

http://maxt.dk/archives/2006/08/01/hirens-bootcd-83/
I used mirror 3 with success. A bit slow @ 60KB~, but I got it nonetheless. - uvscwolverine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I just realized that I'm talking about a different product...we use the one that's linked by the comment above mine at www.ubcd4win.com
- uvscwolverine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7We use the Ultimate Boot CD constantly at the tech shop where I work. I do tech support in an environment with a HUGE deployment of Windows XP based machines (i'm talking several thousand here). The UBCD is one of our favorite tools. Instead of the default interface we've got it running a slimmed down version of windows (it's legal). The most common things we use it for are backing up and reloading computers. We only have a few hardware configurations across the organization and we have the UBCD set up with the drivers it needs in order to fully use the hardware in our machines - including support for external USB hard drives. We're able to edit the registry, run spyware scans, and remove viruses all booted from the CD.
I know this sounds like a commercial but it's saved us hundreds of man hours(if not thousands - I've only been working at this place for a year and we've been using UBCD since before I started) down in IT support. - mistajon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5More here - http://www.jk.net.au/tech/

Hiren's Boot CD 7.9
Ultimate Boot CD Full 3.4
miniPE-XT 2K5.09.03
MS-DOS 7.10 Super Boot Disk - theunderground5, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6hey i'm really sorry i said it was linux it's actually dos, but they do have a linux version i posted this story when i was really tired
- Feanor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7gotta agree
- shawnz, on 10/12/2007, -20/+24it isn't a dos or linux cd, its proprietary
- nabiy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4ubcd is nice, but i really like ubcd for windows: http://www.ubcd4win.com/
it includes some great tools for file recovery, including handy recovery http://www.handyrecovery.com/ and disk investigator http://www.theabsolute.net/sware/dskinv.html - vspazv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Current info for Hiren's boot CD is always available here:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/hiren.thanki/bootcd.html
(no actual download links from that page, just a list of the included programs and versions) - shawnz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6ursus: its all code, there's no real difference between OS and bootloader. in this case, the bootloader is essentially the entire OS for the disk.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Winternals (now Microsoft) made a great recovery CD product as part of their Administrators Pak.
http://www.winternals.com/Products/AdministratorsPak/Default.aspx#erdcommander2005 - diggduggjoe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I love the Ultimate Boot CD! The hard drive diags and memtest alone are worth the download. I use it all the time with my IT business. I have even used the one of the linux distros to save an entire Win9x system in the past. Bart's PE is a great additional tool.
The fact is MS offers no real tools to recover a really screwed up PC. Simple boot problems or replacing a known bad file are possible, but I have used Bart PE and recovered an entire XP OS by doing an upgrade over a restored backup on to a healthy disk. Windows only rebooted, even the recovery console. It became confused, freaked out and crashed.
MS is so fearful that we will steal from them they keep great tools from being available to fix Windows. That is one of the most important reasons I like Linux. An open system like that has almost limitless tools to repair it or to retrieve data with.
With MS, their licensing is more important that whether or not your digital life is destroyed. Other MS crap that annoys me is not allowing XP to mirror drives. For the life of me, I cannot understand why redundancy on a workstations is Verboten! Even in a corporate environment it would provide CEOs with a PC that even with a disk crash would let them finish their work before IT comes in and replaces the drive. The fax feature having a single modem limitation is a premeditated limit, not a software design issue. W2K had it, but XP does not for MS has some fax product to sell. I have a small business and only need a single inbound fax line and I fax so infrequently that I wish to have another modem to fax out a line with an unlimited long distance account. I live in a phone hell of supporting a state border area. I have clients very close that the phone company still bends me over and has their way with me compared to farther clients that are given a "local" billing arrangement.
MS creates limitations based on their business model and not the limitations of IT. Use the various boot CDs for you will need them when MS lets you down. - borgib, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4will it be able to read information from a RAID setup?
- Snakedal337, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5To bad the torrent is pretty much dead :-(
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This definitely isn't anything new, but it's a *great* tool that everyone should know about. It's especially handy for overclocking.
- bennyboy371, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Believe it or not, but my damned Toshiba laptop actually won't boot into anything but its own rescue disk. Very enraging.
- acea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I found Techiez Toolkit just as good - if not better - although 90% of the apps bundled in it are useless - give me 5 good apps over 50 average ones anyday..
- spunkmyer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Do any Linux boot Cd's or distro's exist that can detect and remove spyware from a infected windows box? Having the equivalent of spysweeper and one that can detect rootkits run exclusively from a linux distro to fix a windows machine would be a god send for lan admins and support personnel.
- Anduu, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Old as the hills and not very good either..,..constantly crashed for me...couldn't do a damn thing with it.

Hiren's + Windows XP (MiniPE Ed) + Ultimate Boot Disc - RipperMortis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Or for those with usenet access, Hiren's BootCD 8.3 with keyboard patch is in alt.binaties.warez and in alt.binaries.boneless, posted Aug 04, 2006
- iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Agreed, I use it to edit shadow password files on a few of my linux machines too.
- bepe86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, it's free. They do however charge if you want to order a physical copy, but the ISO is completely free of charge.
- CubiX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Far from ultimate... Useful maybe...
I use combination of GParted live CD (http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php), PlanB live CD (http://www.projectplanb.org/), OPHCrack live CD (http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/) and a Ubuntu live CD (http://www.ubuntu.com/) for my admin needs. - freonchill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1WTF - IT COSTS?!
- rawnnie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Someone should make the Ultiamte boot cd of all the Ultimate boot cd's
- motang, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2This is one useful tool for all the system admins out there. I have been using it for some time now.
Digg - UnderLoK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I would rate it above "not bad". I've used it sinced I phased out my floppy ages ago.

- gjantz, on 07/28/2008, -0/+0Is there a newer than 2.0 of David's Ultimate Boot Cd 2.0? I would like to have one if possible
- MaxT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A new version of Hiren's BootCD is out and it's now version 8.4 with lots of updated stuff.

http://maxt.dk/archives/2006/09/05/hirens-bootcd-84/ - NerveBand, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I think a DVD would work better. Much more room for more usefull applications. Sometimes more is better!
- Madgoldfish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1We have been using it for about a year now at circuit city. Pretty Awesome.
- Hurricane, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1*****, I have been using this for years.
I buried it not due to it being old news but due to the inaccurate heading, UBCD has nothing to do with Linux. - diggduggjoe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This distro is not updated constantly. Plus, I have never needed to have a super-secure recovery distro. Maybe, you browse PORN while you recover data for your clients, but most techs will prefer to get data recovery done first! What? You do not have your own PC to browse PORN with? Not much of a tech, are you?
This distro of various boot disks and Linux boot disks provides an excellent service. Ragging on its current Firefox version is not even an argument when real data recovery is being done. - doherty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@shawnz
That's really not true at all. A bootloader and an operating system serve completely different functions that are not freely interchangeable.
That's almost like saying "a BIOS and Firefox are pretty much the same thing" just because, in the end, they're both zeros and ones... -
