Be warned, Tor is not completely secure or reputable because the exit nodes in these Tor networks can be sniffed by the person operating them (and there are exit nodes set up just for this purpose, believe me)
http://czarism.com/tor-vs-security-sniffing-exit-n ... - Murdats, on 10/30/2008, -2/+32because idiots like you ruin the network by trying to torrent on it.
- sfacets, on 10/30/2008, -0/+23May be the only options for Australians who want to bypass the great Firewall of Australia in the future.
- sfacets, on 10/30/2008, -2/+24Secure? Sure. Fast enough to do anything useful?
- SubjectiveC, on 10/30/2008, -4/+24It's slow as ***** and mostly used by child pornographers. I mean, channers.
- inactive, on 10/30/2008, -2/+21You're a ***** stupid jerkoff. People donate bandwidth to Tor for anonymity not so pussy ***** like you can use it for torrents. Go ***** yourself
- toastgodsupreme, on 10/30/2008, -1/+14True story. Tor is a great idea, but there aren't enough exit nodes to justify using it for longer than 1 minute before you get frustrated with nothing loading.
Not only that, but the more popular uses for it make it shady to even consider having it on your system. Just don't bother with it. - AaronCo, on 10/30/2008, -1/+13Tor is the hip modern way to experience dialup speeds on a fiber optic connection.
- sfacets, on 10/30/2008, -1/+13Dude, you're contradicting yourself.
- realwat, on 10/30/2008, -0/+9Good point, it's a good setup to catch fishes who blindly believe they are safe. Chose your proxy server carefully.
- kipmartin, on 10/30/2008, -0/+8why not just use tubes?
- incidentflux, on 10/30/2008, -0/+7Sadly that's our reality too in the Middle East, for eg in U.A.E. we pay 50 USD per mo for a crappy 512Kbps ADSL connection, where most of the good stuff like VoIP: Skype/SIP, Last.fm, flickr, parts of Wikipedia are blocked. Plus we have to pay extra for these kinds of VPN services.
On the plus side, Most of my IP traffic is now encrypted and generally people endup learning more about secure access, with VPN usage. - t0ny, on 10/30/2008, -2/+9Secure? NO!
DO NOT USE TOR FOR SECURITY!!!
Any one can setup their own exit node and watch your traffic. Only use it for anonymity and thats it.
So it is pretty useless for me. If you are getting my traffic I dont care if you know who I am. - smotpoker, on 10/30/2008, -1/+7Anonymity is considered security through obscurity :P.
Besides, it is relatively secure for some purposes if you are willing to deal with the lag. - cgbspender, on 10/30/2008, -0/+6Google JanusVM
- balliamo, on 10/30/2008, -1/+7wtf ? Are you some sort of a psycho ?
- inactive, on 10/30/2008, -0/+6lol@Java applets. If you're enough of a n00b to use active content with it or anything, then you already know where the problem is...
If you want security, it's not that tor isn't helpful. You need to be intelligent, though. It's obviously not magically secure. - sphira, on 10/30/2008, -0/+6I agree better, but not cheaper!
- kenwestin, on 10/30/2008, -1/+6Agree with r3negadeX, Tor is a fralse sense of security. Although it does mitigate some risks, it is not fool proof and there are ways of getting the originator's IP address.
Not only from the exit nodes, but a few other techniques such as Java applets sending UDP packets revealing the originating IP amongst others. - SoulDesigner, on 10/30/2008, -0/+5you do not have a clue how tor works.
all transfers between nodes are encrypted, and the exit node has no idea who in the tor network initially requested the information.
The only sniffing that can be done is at the exit node and providing the information sent is not personal in nature the operator of the exit node has no way of finding out who on the tor network the request came from. - sfacets, on 10/30/2008, -0/+5"hip" isn't edgy though.
- MadHarvey, on 10/30/2008, -0/+4TOR nodes cannot tell who requested what.
The TOR software is well written, and has little to do with the speed of TOR.
It wasn't meant to be used for stealing movies.
Please take the time to understand the technology before you make claims against it. - reverbhell, on 10/30/2008, -0/+43. Preferences -> Interface Language and Search Language
- jwolcott, on 10/30/2008, -0/+4But is that fully anonymous, secure, and safe?
- netdroid9, on 10/30/2008, -0/+4Look up an index of .onion domains, I did once. It had a list of the top sites and their names. I have never, ever even touched Tor again.
- holeepenguinpee, on 10/30/2008, -0/+4Because tubes are made of glass and the magic unicorns could break the tubes when they're operating.
- smotpoker, on 10/30/2008, -0/+4It's not just the number of exit nodes that makes it so slow, but the nefarious activities you mentioned.
Despite those nefarious activities though, it can still come in handy and people shouldn't avoid it because they are scared it will make them look bad or something. It was designed for legitimate use and the project will ultimately fail if all legit users abandon it because they are afraid of looking bad (not to mention if most legit users abandon it, it really WILL be hard for the remaining ones to convince others they really are legit if necessary). - rmxz, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3Tor and Torbutton is useful for coffee shops and workplaces with internet filters that block users from visiting even pretty benign sites. I've seen a number of them even blocking benign sites like flikr.
For all those pointing that if you enter private information in HTTP (as opposed to HTTPS) requests through TOR it can be sniffed - of course it can. But that's no different from any network you might connect to. - wukillabee, on 10/30/2008, -1/+4good luck, im behind 7 proxies
- gilbes, on 10/30/2008, -5/+8Tor is NOT ultimate security. Tor nodes can still tell who requested what.
Also, it's incredibly slow. Remember the dial-up days? Now remember back in the 28K days. Now you are almost are as slow as Tor.
And the software to use it is buggy, and itself slow.
Also, it is inappropriate for things like torrent. So its use is very limited.
So basically, its a very slightly but not significantly more secure option for broadband users who want to have less that dial up speed.
Yes, the truth hurts. Not all good ideas are good implementation. - pwr4, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3Look at the privacy statement at ultrareach.com they flat out say that they keep a log of your browsing history on their servers. No thanks!

Lighten up dude - - incidentflux, on 10/30/2008, -1/+4Buy any reputable VPN service, they range from 40 USD to 100 USD yearly. They usually offer connectivity via OpenVPN/OpenSSL, PPTP or IPsec. Better than using some crappy unknown proxy service.
- inactive, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3What you mean technology posts? Then Digg was born dead, apparently.
- inactive, on 10/30/2008, -1/+4Well if you're encrypting your traffic it won't matter... You can obviously do that if where you're trying to use supports this.
- reverbhell, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3Sure it makes sense if you're sending out sensitive government information by Tor, not to use it, because the data itself is being looked at. However, for someone who wants anonymity, and doesn't care about people knowing what they're surfing, Tor is a good idea.
- Troupkid, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3"Tor" isn't Digg though.
- sfacets, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3Same difference...
- gandhii, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3I love the irony of a digg user insulting digg users... on digg.
- Lewie, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3A tech story killed Digg?
- entropy71, on 10/30/2008, -1/+3Like usernames/passwords or other potentially identifying information? I just feel awkward putting my private activities in the hands of complete strangers who may or may not have my best interests at heart.
- uberduger, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2Hey, croecop: stop ***** up the TOR network just because you're afraid of being sued for downloading the next episode of Desperate Housewives.
I always used to wonder why TOR is so slow. Now I realise it's people like you. - uberduger, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2Nah, a dump truck will suffice.
- ashlvsya, on 10/30/2008, -2/+4Xerobank, TOR without the ***** slowness.
E2A: You can increase security by creating an exit node and choosing that as exiting traffic. Your traffic then mixes with everyone elses so it wouldn't be usable in court etc. - Jhonka, on 10/30/2008, -2/+4Is anyone else confused by everything in that article, or am I the only one who clicked it thinking it was "noob-friendly" ?
- Garofoli, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2Also it's a resource hog.
- rmxz, on 10/30/2008, -1/+3r3negadeX's concern about sniffing HTTP is valid not just for Tor, but for just about any network you might use. If you *are* using *HTTPS*, neither Tor exit nodes (when using Tor) nor your ISP (when not using Tor) , or any other router betweeen your ISP and the site you are connecting to can sniff the packets.
It's a bit unfair to claim that Tor is neither secure nor reputable because of this. Sniffing HTTP when users should use HTTPS is a totally orthogonal issue that Tor neither tries nor claims to protect against. - sodade, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2The real problem with TOR is that using it makes you a target.
- uberduger, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2I wouldn't trust it since they sold out and went commercial. Something about the site and the entire setup just doesn't seem trustworthy.

What is Digg?
The Digg Toolbar for Firefox lets you Digg, submit content, and keep track of Digg even when you're not on the Digg site. Download the official
