- shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19sounds like an excellent idea, video is much more efficient at getting data into my brain than text :)
- andersonmanly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Stop using the word "fanboy"...everyone knows...that's just gay.
- Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13This should be renamed to "How to Navigate Gnome".....seeing as how there's nothing Ubuntu-specific with 99% of the clips I saw listed.
- vh1`, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12did you seriously just say "ucraptnu"?
at least poobuntu or something. - blinkfink182, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11No streaming video?
- Erowid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10It's being dugg down because you just insulted the people who would be drawn to this article :/
- ajifans, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Sure I've seen it before, but completely forgot about it as it was in an infant state. Gets a Digg for reminding me about it!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Completing "common tasks" isn't where the difficulty lies in using Linux. It's when you start getting into the realm of UNcommon tasks that you start getting lost.
Perhaps they would be better off including videos for how to edit configuration files (and where to find them), because for many Linux problems, this is one of the most important skills to learn.
They can also have videos showing how to install a piece of software that does not come included in Ubuntu's pre-approved software repository, and how to solve dependency issues for such software. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Very cool concept. However, I think most people that are new to Ubuntu are most likely power users on their Windows boxen already (otherwise how would they have even HEARD of Ubuntu?), so what they really need are some more advanced things other than "how to add extensions to Firefox".
Maybe like how to determine what Video card settings to use, how to make sure the Video drivers are running optimally, how to make use of productivity packs, how to set up their networking, how to test networking, determining what sound card settings to use, etc.... - repruhsent, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@Lobster:
What the hell are you talking about? - curupira, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Maybe Google Video is better for the task -- 640x400 instead of 320x400... I can't see very well hose desktop videos on minimal resolution.
- wozley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Nice find.
- Moparx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5It is a shame that everyone is getting dugg down for speaking the truth.
It is just like any other GNU/Linux distribution out there and it is kind of annoying to continually see people putting Ubuntu on some sort of pedestal like it is the best thing ever created.
I am always seeing people create articles or websites that are really geared towards all GNU/Linux distributions yet they tag it like it is for Ubuntu only.
(e.g. Articles that say "How to on Ubuntu!" instead of saying "How to on GNU/Linux!" or the site this story is about.. it should really read "How to navigate GNOME" as that what it is mostly about as Phocion55 also noted.)
Don't get me wrong.. I personally don't care what distribution people use, I would just like people to take note that Ubuntu isn't the only distribution out there. - Stemp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5If you think that there is nothing special about Ubuntu what about giving us a break and just focus on you distribution of choice.
You prefer Gentoo ? Good for you. - eddieroger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7So is it me, or is this site completely free of CSS?

- notman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is right on time for a class speech I have to do in a week. It's going to be a persuasive speech on using Linux over Windows and I intended to use Ubuntu since it offers such an easy transition for Windows users. Thanks for posting it.
- Flamekebab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It might be good to have a menu section in a future Ubuntu release that goes directly to video tutorials, either through launching a weblink, or via a small, dedicated video tutorial app.
- pile0nades, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Maybe someone can youtube them. Please, someone?
- Technopundit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Where's the one about how to get WiFi to work?
- Technopundit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I can't see these. The crummy Totem media player that came with Ubuntu won't let me.
- nixdoctor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I wish they let us download flash videos (.swf) which are much more efficient than these video files. Flash can also be watched online without incurring a dent in bandwidth like avi, mov or ogg files do.
- Shadowman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Ubuntu is the Scientology of the Linux world.
- arjie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Phocion:
I don't see what the problem is. People use ubuntu because they like it. They don't claim it's the next best thing since the wheel. Come on man, just use what you like and stop stuffing your preference down other people's throats. If someone wants to make a page relating to Ubuntu because they use Ubuntu, let them. You don't like Ubuntu? Don't use it.
Also, you want to know what sets ubuntu apart from other debian-based distros (I love the apt system and wouldn't leave it for anything!)? A nice community (atleast to me) :) - Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@arjie:
"You don't like Ubuntu? Don't use it."
I never said anything like "Ubuntu sucks" or "Ubuntu is horrible" because it doesn't. It's just nothing special like people make it out to be. If Ubuntu is "Linux for human beings" then ANY distro is for "human beings".
"I love the apt system...."
I have used apt and other NUMEROUS package management systems before, but in my personal opinion, Portage is the best.
"A nice community...."
The guys in #gentoo and #fedoracore on FreeNode are *extremely* nice and helpful....this isn't "Ubuntu-specific".
I am completely neutral when it comes to picking a Linux distro. My point all along has been that there's no way to argue that one distro is superior to another. Ubuntu users don't realize this. I have 2 Gentoo boxes, an FC5 box, and a SuSE box at home....so it should be evident that I'm a supporter of Linux in general and not just one single distro. - Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2in response to repruhsent above. didn't hit "reply".
- vondur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2 I checked out the video on MP3 playback and (correct me if I'm wrong) but XMMS is not going to play MP3 files without the mp3 decoding libraries that are not included on a default Ubuntu installation. Unless you enable a couple of extra repositories, you will not have access to the required libraries. Besides, if you did have access to the extra repositories you would probably want to add MP3 functionality to the preinstalled music app via the gstreamer plugins.

just to enlighten you......because it seems you need some help.... - spiritamx79, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i been trying to get kubuntu to work correctly. im having a hell of a time getting drivers installed for bluetooth (it sees my phone, but thats it) and my wireless network card (it sees it but it wont power on) all the instructions i can find want you to download files from the terminal. well if i cant get online, how do i download them?
i download the files manually and try to install them, but i get errors. i feel like im running in circles. so i think i'll try a live cd of pclinux and see what happens. if its really that easy, why not!? - obinine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Good idea. I'll get on that!
- there, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2 The problem I've always found with Linux is not too many people are familiar with it (other than us nerdie types :). So what ends up happening is people have no easy method to learn. Sure you can read a book....but hey we are talking about a world where the average person watches 25 hours of TV a day and barely opens a book in their lifetime past schooling..
This is a great resource that will definitely help Linux . - blueigloo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@RandallBe: Amen brother... your gonna get digged down massively, but ill give you a +1
- Flamekebab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I know a lot of people who really like the naming scheme. Which basically makes your point null and void.
- pile0nades, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thank you for link directly to the site, and not to blogspam.
- mukiex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Kubuntu does a pretty nice job of looking as modern as I need it to, especially with kbfx.
I recently came to eat humble pie regardling Linux, or at least well-packaged distros (I'm talking about number, not bleeding edge newness, tho I like both =3 . Checkinstall is nice.). I used to complain about how damn long it took to get my computer running with all the stuff I need in Linux, whereas usually in Windows it'd take me an hour. Of course, this was in Suse/Red Hat, and their default yum/yast repositories were crap. There's NOTHING there for the average person who just wants to listen to their music, watch some videos, and run (gasp) software with 3D accelleration. (Blender in my case) At least nothing there without excessive searching.
My standard Windows installation consisted of the "search the internet" game, where after installing, I'd go look for Opera, Firefox, Azureus, Java JRE 5, DVD Shrink, Media Player Classic, a codec pack, Quicktime/Real Alternative, Fox PDF, etc. etc.
After a while I'd just make a CD full of those apps to have around in case I needed a re-install. Unfortunately, those CD's are easy to lose track of.
Well, for whatever reason, something between my Windows and Linux partitions fubared my Ext3 partition. I couldn't write any data, no matter how much I deleted. So after half an hour of messing with FixMBR and such, I just backed up my home folder, my Windows Documents 'n Settings folders, wipped the whole thing out, and installed Kubuntu Dapper. I came to the stark realization that after I had my sources.list file down pact, it took me less than half an hour (and most of that was productive time while some apps downloaded in the background) to get my box back up to speed. All I needed was the sources.list file (thank you, ubuntu chat room) and I was good to go.
It's STRANGE installing two dozen programs without running an installer, now that I stop and think about it.
Well, that's just my experience with Ubuntu. Maybe I'll just plunk down and try Debian some day. - Aninhumer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It would be so easy to drop a script in that does those three commands for them...
Or perhaps, make it so that if you try to open a Makefile in nautilus, it runs make, make install by default? - aragon127, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've used Ubuntu before as well as Suse, Mepis, LCOS, Mandrake, Fedora and Gentoo.
Ubuntu took me far more time to properly set up then any of the others (note Gentoo on the list). Sure it kind of worked out of the box. No mp3, no dvd, no 3d acceleration, but I had this ugly brown screen and I could browse the internet.
I spent weeks getting everything set up properly to where I would consider it comfortable to work in. Even then my sound would only work for a short period of time and my net connection died anytime I used usenet.
The only one of these that I would seriously say " just works" is LCOS. Bear in mind I'm not saying LCOS is the best distribution ever or perfect for everyone (anyone who says something similar about any distro is a moron), it's just an OS that can be installed and completely workable (with 3d acceleration, mp3, dvd, etc) in about 15 minutes.
Bottom line is, Ubuntu is a very good distro with quite likely the best forums out there. It is not the end all of the linux world though. With all the press Ubuntu gets you'd think it's head and tails above everything else, but that's not true. - obinine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You're most welcome. I can't stand that, either.
- Aninhumer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How the hell does it look like it's from the 90s?
I could understand someone disliking brown, but, while it's not shiny, the default theme isn't that bland.
(Personally I dislike KDE's "shiny" look, but that's just my opinion) - obinine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Agreed. There are lots of free alternatives to the current dominant desktop operating system. This site has a nice list:
http://*****.com
as well as some great reasons why you should switch.
BTW, I'm not even a Ubuntu user myself (I run Kubuntu), but it's still the distro I recommend to my Windows friends looking for an alternative. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For all intents and purposes most people new to Ubuntu don't realize you can just find the .deb package and double-click it the way you would an .exe in Windows. Where most new Linux users get hung up is when they come across a .tar.gz and have to untar it, make, make install, ./configure, etc.... all that non-sense.
- repruhsent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Flamekebab:
...and I know a lot more people who think it's dumb. Which basically makes your point null and void. - QuackQuack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what in the world are you talking about?
- chrisolsen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2These rants always make me smile, in that it is the people that are using some other distro that get all riled up. Is there anything that make Ubuntu better than other O/S's, probably not, but then I don't have that much experience with others so how can I really say.
Yes I have Ubuntu installed as the sole O/S on one of my computers, why did I install it? At the time it was because of a few reasons:
- a friend mentioned it was easier to install then CentOS (whether that is true I don't know)
- I was tired of Fedora Core 4 (not sure exactly why)
- it was downloadable onto one cd
- there was a boot from cd option (I know now that knoppix also has this, as well as others I am sure, but I didn't know that at the time)
But most of all I was able to ask a few dumass questions on the ubuntu forums and get good answers. I am not saying that there isn't sites for other distros, but it was so easy to get answers to questions and search the forums for the exact answer that I was looking for.
I have considered installing others, but all is now running nicely so there is no use in changing it. So just because someone uses Ubuntu doesn't mean they are a fan boy, so take a pill and enjoy the fact that there is a number of amazing Linux distros out there currently make using windows somewhat discomforting (at least for me) - Nugolot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1add multiverse and universe sources and
sudo apt-get install vlc - Flamekebab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can't say I've *needed* to compile anything from source in my whole time using Ubuntu.
I compiled the latest version of Kino because I'm impatient, but that wasn't exactly necessary, more to see if I could do it. - QuackQuack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ah, ok.
- repruhsent, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Exactly. This whole website is a solution without a problem. Sites like this will become useful when the bulk of the public starts to consider Linux as an alternative to Windows... which, given Apple's new momentum, will be in like... 20 years.
- aragon127, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8What's the begin deal with Ubuntu? I can think of a half dozen distro's that I'd greatly prefer over Ubuntu.
I also can't agree with the whole, Ubuntu is for beginners thing. There are several distro's that are much better suited for Windows users. PCLINUXOS can have a newbie up and running with 3d acceleration, codecs and DVDs in 15 minutes and you don't even have to follow a tutorial.
Ubuntu's cool and all, but seriously, there are other distro's out there folks. -
