- Fratm, on 10/12/2007, -5/+31Ubuntu is a nice distro, and yes, it is easy to install, but if we really want more people using it, then ubuntu is a strong move forward.
For those who think using Ubuntu means you have a low IQ, you can get bent. I use ubuntu, and have been a Linux sysadmin for 11 years.
-Fratm - ericcc, on 10/12/2007, -7/+31Well good luck with that. Don't let anybody tell you WinXP sucks if if works for you, but I do hope you give Linux another try.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -25/+41Ubuntu: African for "I can't configure Debian"
:p - kimastergeorge, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22Alright, then, next time OpenBSD makes news, I'll say, whatever, OpenBSD sucks, Ubuntu is awesome
Wouldn't you like that? It seems to be the sort of thing you're promoting. - egorgry, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21@skyshock21
"Ubuntu: African for "I can't configure Debian"
Being a Debian/Sid user for many years I have to disagree, I prefer Ubuntu: African for "too lazy to configure Debian" ;) - Fratm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Welcome to the f*cked up world of Digg.
-Fratm - fsapo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19This one is better :D
"Ubuntu is an ancient African word that means: I am ***** tired of compiling Gentoo" - armbar, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15http://ubuntucounter.geekosophical.net/img/ubuntu-user.php?user=1
Gee, I wonder what I have to do to change the number in the image?
Look, I'm number 66 too!
http://ubuntucounter.geekosophical.net/img/ubuntu-user.php?user=66 - nnonix, on 10/12/2007, -18/+28I don't think the term "fad" applies to Ubuntu. Fad's don't get certified by IBM or praised by Sun Microsystems.
- JammyJT, on 10/12/2007, -9/+18I keep trying to get into Ubuntu, i've tried the Live CDs and even installed it but im just too stuck in my Win XP ways to stick with it. Maybe i'll join you some other day though...
- Fratm, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14@Erric
Great attitude, I wish more computer users were like that.
-Fratm - bloodylip, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9"You use Linux in order to not be a microsheep, not Ubuntu."
Really? I use Linux because it is, in many ways, superior to other operating systems I've used. - MrRockabilly, on 10/12/2007, -12/+17Maybe Im a little ***** up, but usually when there is some sort of MS related article on digg, people cant bash them fast enough. 95% of comments would be negative. Now, there is an article asking people to display their use of an open source alternative and people are being negative towards it. Am I missing something?
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I think everyone should already be registered at the linux tracker! Too bad the only distro I know of that prompts you to do so is Slackware.
- echeese, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9X sucks. I use Y, cause it is way better.
- larryni, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6What's the use? It's a counter - nothing more, nothing less. It's certainly nothing to do with certification.
- Gryffydd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@bloodylip
You totally missed my point. My point *is* that people use Linux because it's a superior operating system. That is in contrast to the fact that people use Ubuntu because they like it better than other *Linux* distributions. - micro506, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8But the thing is, the people who use Ubuntu want to be part of a large group.
- MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Nothing wrong with that type of thinking. Good luck. We'll be here for ya if you ever give it another go.
- bluephoenix, on 10/12/2007, -13/+16What is the use of such a web badge? It will not gain you any kind of recognition, ubuntu is a hobbyist linux distro as far as I know....now if it required some kind of training or testing in order to acquire said official badge then I'd see the use.....
- regeya, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Yet more proof Ubuntu's getting popular: l33t d00dz are trashing it.
Someone comes up with a Linux distribution that's about as easy to install and configure as MacOS 8.6, and it's time to bring out the bludgeons. Gee whiz. - jokerr, on 10/12/2007, -13/+16I like Ubuntu as much as the next guy but this is st00pid. "Hey look at me everyone. Register on my site that you use Ubuntu and we can see how many of us there are. I love Ubuntu pimping." Seriously, this is lame.
- nixr, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Since when does the operating system you use define you as a person? I use Debian, Ubuntu, Gentoo, XP, and 98SE on in my workshop and find all of them to be useful. OS zealotry makes baby Jesus cry.
- armbar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6@arizona
The invalid # shows up for a number that hasn't been registered yet. So right now, #2304 wouldn't work either, since nobody's registered with that id yet. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -14/+16LO fn L at all the comments in here. I think if Linux were a person most of you would be on your knees licking his ballsack.
- Peepsalot, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8You mean the odds that you got such a nice round number? About 1 in 100.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2STFUBUNTU
- bigtomrodney, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6What's wrong with just using the linuxcounter? Why get distro specific?
- streamx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Scientobuntu - Ubuntu fork authorized by L. Ron. Hubbard!

Well, as long as you keep masturbating to porn on your computer, you are pretty safe from herpes and the like. Good work! - MarkByers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Oops I thought it was just another a Windows troll trying to get some attention on a non Windows thread, from reading the first line. Maybe I should have read the second line as well :)
- akinder, on 10/12/2007, -11/+11Why do you think Linus never leaves his house? Rabid fanboys wearing penguin badges.
- ArendM, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Looks like Ubuntu is more and more becoming some sort of religion.
- arizonagroove, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6If they get too popular they're going to hit a problem -

(produces a graphic containing 'Invalid #' where the number should be for those who can't be bothered to follow the link - lengau, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Being an old Gentoo user who switched to Debian and then to Kubuntu, I would agree. I still compile some things (packages/programs without binaries, X11), but for the most part, the binaries are fine. I would like more choices for X11, though (like the kernel). Specifically, I'd like a K7-optimized compile of X11. I think that would work well (X11 and the kernel are the two things most people use most). Perhaps even during the initial install, it could choose which kernel and X11 based on the processor (or even just give an "advanced" option to choose it). Just an idea.
Anyway, back to the original point: Gentoo's good for an experiment, but it's too much work for an everyday machine, especially when you have other things to do. - codemac, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Hah.
I'm not sure if I'd want to advertise that I use ubuntu. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2This is not necessary. Trust me, all of us here probably read Digg regularly, and based on all the Ubuntu crap that gets posted daily, you are 'heard' like a *****.
- MarkByers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Maybe it's because most people here think Ubuntu is better designed, and given the choice would rather have Windows look and feel more like Ubuntu.
That doesn't mean that you have to use it of course. You asked to know the reason, I told you. You may not like the answer. If not, I don't care. use Windows if you prefer. Everyone should use what they feel at home with, even if it's not the best choice for most people. - williambertram, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1One possible use of this counter would be to find out which version of Ubuntu is most used, which I could see being valuable information to developers.
The buttons are a fun little novelty thing you can put on your web page if you want. - williambertram, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Here's a good site about dual booting Ubuntu and Windows XP:
http://users.bigpond.net.au/hermanzone/
Another option is just using Ubuntu as a Live CD. Just burn the iso to CD, then boot from the CD. You get a great preview of Ubuntu without altering your system.
Here's a link to download the iso:
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ - shosterman, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4I also installed Ubuntu on my test rig and started playing around with it. I can see how it would be popular as a transition to Linux. Sure enough though, not a couple hours in and the thing was pissing me off. I never was able to get Skype installed. Downloaded the Debian package and received an error "i386 something." Tried several alternative tutorials for installing Skype, none of those worked. Finally I just took a breath, shut the thing down and went to bed.
If Linux really wants to move into the home user market it still has a lot of work to accomplish. Maybe it was just that Skype package, but I don't think I should have to work around the OS just to install a simple application. The average Jane certainly isn't going to. - diggdat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1@MarkByers
It would seem that you have missed MrRockabilly's point entirely... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Wny? Why! Who cares how many people use it.
Why can't we just use our Linux distributions and be happy. Why all this prothlesizing? Pretty soon Linux users will be knocking on our doors during dinner handing out pamphletes and spreading the "good news" of the penguin. - alrahman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I would install Ubuntu, if only dual booting wasn't such a headache.
- egorgry, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3I'm not sure anyone is saying it does. It's just a stupid fun thing to do. I have XPpro, XP MCE, I've used all variants of linux I evern have a copy of BeOS. If that defines me as anything it would be schizophranic
- MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Next Linux Distro by MasterDwarf: Schweaty Balls Linux. I like it!
- elkbuntu, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4The bsd fanboys converged.
- ordminute, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Just as if this was a Windows counter, it wouldn't come close to representing the install base. It would be better to have a voluntary "Count Me" button in the OS itself, on install for instance. Just a ping to a server to let them know you've installed it.
We don't have Google Zeitgeist anymore.. That was revealing. There were alot more Linux users back then than every represented in 'Maket Share'. Of the supposed 3-6 million Ubuntu users out there I'd doubt 1% will register.
Nothing wrong with the idea though. -
