- chad78, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20What I don't understand is why are people buying Ubuntu at all. Did Canonical stop sending out as many free copies as you can ask for?
- schoate09, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20Umm, that's Ubuntu compared to only ONE version of Vista, a low selling one that's expensive and for high end. How about comparing it to the portion that Microsoft expected 70% sales from, HOME PREMIUM. Or, total all Vista versions combined. God forbid.
- ekso, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15This being true or not, I'm not gonna digg a link to a f*ing lame endless discussion.
- havaslash, on 10/11/2007, -7/+17Ubuntu all the way!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12id hate to rain on the parade but vista ultimate is now above ubuntu :p
- gmprunner, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11A free operating system "outselling" a multi-hundred dollar version? NO WAY.
- Dankoozy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11I like the way all the .ASPX fanboys on that forum are feeding the troll
- IceZZ, on 10/11/2007, -5/+13It's FREE. Why would you pay for it? (and just like free advice, is worth about as much)
- pintomp3, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6the software is free, the dvd, case, and shipping are not.
- pintomp3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5very true. though on the flipside, i would assume most people just download the .iso anyway.
- mushroom, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7As phreaks pointed out
http://tinyurl.com/ytu293 - RacerX2727, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Also, not to mention copies of windows distributed on new PC's, every copy sold from a Best Buy or Circuit City, I mean really, who buys an OS from amazon?
- Oakes, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Exactly. This is really sad. Here are a few gems from the moron who started that thread:
"Nice way to make yourself look completely stupid though. Oh, wait, from the picture you posted of yourself, you really don't have to do much to look stupid."
"Hey, ToiletScrubber, I have some stains on my toilet bowl, I'd be glad to hire some cheap help as for a maid. And you'll even get a green card if you are lucky!" - estvir, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5What, you mean a few silly anti-MS lemmings make a biased/inaccurate point to try and prove Linux is oh-so-super awesome? NO WAI!
- cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3You're getting a nice pressed CD with a jewelcase, cover, and label. If you have a fast enough connection, you can, of course, download it free of charge and burn it to a disc, but some people find it more convenient just to have it shipped to them, for whatever reasons. And Amazon's shipping is faster than the shipping Ubuntu will use when you request free discs.
- binaryspiral, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4And if you act now, you'll save $3 on this free software - final price $9, S&H extra.

Or, take your dumbass to ubuntu.com and get it free - pay for shipping... http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu
Sure you can download it, but not everyone has broadband. - kahrn, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6Yeah, although apparently ubuntu is not in the operating system section (although I have not checked myself).
I quick look at the most popular software overall does show ubuntu ahead of vista. http://tinyurl.com/368t7l - jordandiggsit, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Ubuntu = $9.99
Vista = >$350.00
gee, i wonder why its selling better... - ronmexico, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Leopard is outselling both of them on Amazon right now.
- grumpyrain, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Ubuntu vs Vista Ultimate anyway.
There is kind of an important detail missing, like this does not include Home Premium or Business, nor any of the upgrade versions, nor any of the 64 bit versions, nor any system builder editions. Also, Amazon are just ranking it per hour. As I write this, Ubuntu is at 61 (a long way below 32) and Ultimate at 78 (a long way above 93). - cl0n3x, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6When I think Ubuntu, I think open source; $9.99 is not what comes to mind.
- cyberdecker, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Not even remotely accurate. I do appreciate Linux and all its many distros, but this is just ridiculous propaganda... how dissapointing.
- Yage2006, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Not bad especially when you consider you can get it for free without having to buy anything sure says something about vista :)
- fadeout, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3How many people buying vista would get it on Amazon? It'd be through work (or school) and corporate sales/support is where the money is...
- arctorkogi, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4That is for just one version though, and the worst selling one at that
- Nebetsu, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3When you buy Ubuntu, you're really paying for the written documentation and packaging. It's pretty good for 10 bucks.
- Hangender, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Clearly, this is a bit misleading. But then again, what can you expect from fanatic Linux fanboys? Pehaps they are too thick to take account the fact that there are 22 million different vista versions, not just ultimate? For example, there is windows vista home edition, windows vista home basic, vista starter, vista pirated, vista for gays, etc etc.
- Dotnetsky, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4who cares about any of this BS, anyway? What's the point?
- cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Actually, I've had to do more scrounging for wireless drivers with Windows than with Linux. However, that's just because I'm lucky enough to have hardware that's supported out of the box. However, more and more drivers are being added, and it can often be easier to set up a Linux system than a Windows system. I've actually never HAD to touch the command line in Ubuntu, however I use it out of choice because the Linux command line is powerful (more so than the Windows one) and I find it more efficient for some things. As for running games, that's the only reason I keep Windows around.
- chingy1788, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Ubuntu is based on Debian
But
Originals are always the best - chad78, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Not anymore. Vista Upgrade DVD outsells Ubuntu. Not only that - Mac OS X Leopard (which isn't even out yet) is outselling them both. So is Windows XP.
http://tinyurl.com/ywl7dw - danakin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Having never really used any Linux distribution before, I decided to try it on my laptop. I installed it, and within minutes found all the basic controls I was used to in Windows.
I now can use Linux fairly capably, and haven't had any system problems.
Ubuntu is basically Debian, in the most basic sense, so either there was something wrong with what your friends were doing and that caused system lockups, or you are just making stuff up. - spucky, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Linux has come a long ways. I am using Ubuntu 7.04 on this laptop to respond to this. I have no problem with wireless drivers and Wine works automatically whenever I try to install or run a Windows program. I use the command line (Bash shell) when I want to automate some operation that I could do just as well, if not slowly with a bunch of mouse clicks through the UI.
Granted, most new high end games aren't going to run too well, if at all, but that is not what I do.
I have been using Linux in various forms for probably 3 years. I now find when I have to use Windows (which I do at work) it feels cluncky.
On my HP laptop, when I run Windows (dual boot), the fans run all the time even when the task manager says that it is 99% idle. In Ubuntu, the fans almost never run. I don't know why, but I suspect that Windows is actually doing stuff behind the scenes that does not show up in task manager. (Gosh... I hope I don't have any virii! :) - tapo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Nope, Canonical still distributes CDs through ShipIt. I just got mine.
People on Amazon are buying DVDs with extra software. - cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Canonical will ship you 3 CDs normally, or 10 if you're active on Launchpad (bug reporting, question answering, etc.) However, in special circumstances, you can apply for more than you are allotted.
- Firehed, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Or preinstalled, like how most of the tens of millions of copies of Vista that have been sold. I don't know where all of this 'Vista is a failure' nonsense is coming from, as just about every new computer comes with it installed. I suppose retail sales might be low, but most people just buy a new machine now rather than upgrade it (read: not geeks).
Not at all bashing Ubuntu here or trying to promote Vista, just stating the facts. I've used both; I prefer Vista to Ubuntu but that's because a) I'm more familiar with Windows and b) no Photoshop on Ubuntu (and don't dare suggest GIMP, it's *****, even for free). I don't really care for either (I vastly prefer OS X to both), but I'm certainly in support of anything that challenges Microsoft since competition is a good thing. - mglukhovsky, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Thank you for introducing such a valuable anecdote to the Digg community. This story is not even true anymore. Vista Upgrade DVD outsells Ubuntu. Not only that - Mac OS X Leopard (which isn't even out yet) is outselling them both. So is Windows XP.
Check it out - http://tinyurl.com/ywl7dw - cl0n3x, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2So you're saying we should all pay $9.99 because it looks pretty? That's Vista talk my friend. I'd much rather wait a few weeks to get the [insert insane number here] of copies that I want for free. Besides, you can get everything you mentioned excdept the jewel case and fast shipping, but heck, I'll give you a free jewel case if that's what you want...
- jimbod, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I think the numbers that are being lost in translation here is that 96% of Windows operating systems are not sold through retail outlets at all. They are sold by computer manufactures such as Dell or HP. Amazon sales only reflects a fraction of the 4% retail market.
- odst117, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1There are 4 versions of Vista. Combine them, and then what do you get?
BTW wat knuckleheads are gonna buy the CD. Just go to the website and download it. Burn it. Use it. - smurf22, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Its out selling home premium and ulitmate that says a lot about FREE software, and you buy it because it helps development, and you get a lot more software. Also it comes in a case instead of paper.
- LanEvo, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3NO. When you think Ubuntu, you think free as in being a cheapskate.
- XRnRX, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0canonical ships but the shipping time can be high since I'm sure they have a high request volume. also the cds they ship assume you have internet access to install software via the repositories.
the dvd for sale at amazon is guaranteed to reach you in a more timely fashion and has the contents of the major repositories on the disc itself so you don't need internet access to install some software you may want.
you can just download the iso right from canonical though and it's the same exact thing that is shipped. the only reason to buy the amazon version is if you have a very slow internet connection or are that strapped for bandwidth. - Dantetheinferno, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Dugg Down as inaccurate for a simple reason.
This is only one version of windows vista. That's it, it's not the home or the 5 other versions (Including ultimate) that we have access to. Add them up and ubuntu loses (On amazon like the comment above said). - JimmyRyan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Home premium is the one that sells the most I dont think this is a very well rounded stat. lol
- IceZZ, on 10/11/2007, -6/+6Because that would be a fair and responable way to compare it, and the Linux pushers wouldn't be happy with that.
- 1ShocK, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1agree
- PainCompliance, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Isn't Ubuntu Debian based? I'm on Ubuntu right now BTW. I have thought about building a Debian based system though. Like the one described here. http://www.howtoforge.com/the_perfect_desktop_debian_etch
What I'm really waiting for though is for DreamLinux to be ready for primetime. -
