- weizbox, on 04/18/2008, -3/+15Wow... biased much?
First off, I was unaware of a 'distro war'... and Ubuntu has quite a ways to go till it meets it's 'Just Works' slogan. Ubuntu is certainly doing some good work(and i think has also put some more pressure on other distros in certain areas), and definitely has become quite popular.. but anyone who has been in the world of Linux for some time knows that different distros go up and down in popularity all the time. However, being sponsored by Canonical could certainly prove to help it keep its rank for a longer period.
The problem with this guys mentally is this blind patriotism. They are so die-hard for a specific distro that technically is VERY similar to a ton of other distros out there, that they stop caring about Linux progression as a whole, and just care about the popularity of a distro, regardless of features, or lack thereof. There is more to Linux than just popularity... but a lot of Ubuntu users (certainly not all) don't seem to think so, like this one.
I think diversity is one of the great things about GNU/Linux and opensource in general... and is not something to be 'won'. - thtroyer, on 04/18/2008, -0/+7Wow. This has been one of the worse articles I've seen about the relationship between Linux distros (particularly concerning Ubuntu).
First off, there is no distro war. Second, there is no such thing as a superior distro. I'm really getting sick of Ubuntu elitism, which exactly what this article is.
Diversity exists for a reason in the GNU/Linux world. First, it's healthy. Competition, in capitalism, drives both sides to produce better products. However, not all distros are even in competition. This is where diversity comes in. Not all distros are appropriate for different architectures like PPC or SPARC. Some are great for beginners. Some are entirely customizable. Different people want or expect different things from their distro, and the diversity provided by different distros keeps people happy.
Diversity is good. Ubuntu isn't the only desktop distro. - tj111, on 04/19/2008, -0/+6I am an Ubuntu user personally, but I really hate Distro Elitism. The Linux community doesn't need to turn into a pissing contest over which distro is better, it needs healthy competition to drive innovation.
- jakswa, on 04/18/2008, -0/+6It was easy for me to jump into. It was easy for the people I've converted to jump into. It doesn't matter to me whether it is or isn't necessarily "better" than others -- I have found some other great distros since being introduced, actually. But Ubuntu got me into linux, and it's getting a lot of people around me into linux, and that makes it a winner in my head.
- thelastknowngod, on 04/19/2008, -0/+3ubuntu is great but its not the end all be all of linux distros. i am a hell of a lot happier running Arch than Ubuntu. i think apt has issues and i would rather a rolling release schedule so i dont have to reinstall my os every 6 months. and if you want long term support then use Slackware. they are still supporting releases that are 7 years old.
there is good things and bad things about every distro. ubuntu is doing an awesome job getting people into linux but once you really get into the community, beyond ubuntu, i think you see that it is pretty over hyped. - inactive, on 04/19/2008, -0/+2I have to agree with the comment by JohnMc, in which he says that he'd prefer to see 4-5 distro's successful.
Together, we conquer.
Divided, we fall. - inactive, on 08/11/2008, -5/+3***** your elitist faggotry and ***** ubuntu. Buried.
