- sanguinemoon, on 10/12/2007, -6/+77I'm not sure how popular this comment will be, be here goes. I actually liked the older one better. This one looks like its trying to be all slick and professional, but it loses that warm, human touch the older one had.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+51Is it weird that the Zune is colored "doo doo brown" but Ubuntu is colored "warm, human brown"? Digg is a fickle beast.
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -1/+42"warm, human brown"?
moving along... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34http://www.ubuntuforums.org received a similar redesign.
- Andronicus1717, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35Good, they got rid of the ring of children. Such forced "diversity" always makes me want to gag.
- sleepwalkers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25"Warm, human touch"
You sure that was the Ubuntu website, and not bangbus.com? - chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25wait.. "warm, human brown moving along"...
oh god it gets worse. - Attrition, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26I agree. They seem to have changed to a more business-style layout.
Perhaps they are trying to push ubuntu-in-the-workplace. But he previous site with the large buttons and text, just felt much more 'human', which I believe is/was the ubuntu point. - Nameless1, on 10/12/2007, -7/+26Id say the website is still too complex for Ubuntu users. Do it like Firefox did. Replace it with one big button "DOWNLOAD HEAR LOLOLOL"
- aph33x, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Too bad there's no phallic splash.
- dc2447, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22A lot of work has gone into the forums but TBH - I find them a disaster in terms of layout.
The ForumHome is just gibberish. - antitab, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16"Are there many applications for it? Can it read/create MS Office files that we use at work/school?"
Yes and yes. You'd be astounded by the sheer number of packages available for free, single-click installation in Ubuntu. As for .doc, OpenOffice has had this capability for years. - assum09, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Aren't "doo doo brown" and "warm, human brown" the same thing?? I mean c'mon they both have poop references
- gameguy43, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13the appeal of ubuntu as a linux distro is its user-friendliness. the older site was more user-friendly, this one is more official and scary.
- Fratm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10@pingspike
I agree, but the nice thing about linux, is that you can change the theme to one that is better for your taste, or create your own.

-Fratm - sleepwalkers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11"Too complex for Ubuntu users"?
Why would it be too complex for Ubuntu users? Considering they're already using Ubuntu, I'm guessing they remember how to navigate a web page. - martynda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I personally hate the color. Awesome distribution which I use every day, but I can't stand their color scheme. Good thing it's Linux and you can change anything you don't like about it.
- SamsLembas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9It is a confusing, cluttery mess.
- calvmari, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I hate the new design. I liked the old one because the search box was right in the center of the screen where I would use it consistently and comfortably. Having the search box out of the way feels awkward and I find myself using the search feature much less, and consequently visiting the forums much less.
- thepaul, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10The reason why there's all this stuff about Ubuntu on Digg has nothing to do with Canonical paying people to get good location, it has to do with a good product.
Ubuntu is becoming the Linux distro of choice for a lot of us who are dipping our feet in the Linux pool.
Who cares about Ubuntu? A lot of people Audi, a lot of people.
why don't you try it yourself. - TonyCubed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Not sure if it's me, but I found the forum designs rather confusing to find information. :S
- masterconnor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8i installed ubuntu the other day but it wont recognize my wireless card. how dissapointing. its hard to run an computer that cant access the internet.
- spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7From the Kubuntu branch button:
"Kubuntu is an official derivative of Ubuntu using the KDE environment instead of GNOME. It is part of the Ubuntu project and uses the same underlying system. It is an exciting distribution that showcases the full potential of the KDE desktop. Kubuntu shares the same repositories as Ubuntu, and relies on the same underlying architecture."
Is there an echo in here? - zixxer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7yes, i agree too...but i dont mind this layout that much..its a pretty good design...BUT you have to dig deeper to find the alternate install ISOs and what not (i never use the desktop cd to install)
- sleepwalkers, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8It's a totally new OS (generally referred to as Linux). Viruses are little to no threat to the user.
Just go download a disk image of Ubuntu, and try it out. You don't even need to install it to try it out. You can try it right from the CD (albeit it's a bit slow, since it's being run off of CD). - DarkSunlight, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Hmm, a big download button you say?
Let's look at the homepage, shall we? http://www.ubuntu.com
What do you see?
(hint: It has a green arrow and it says "Download now" ) - kamandu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4How about a redesign for kubuntu.org?
It is with out a doubt one of the worst designs in the OSS community. - Renton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah, I had that problem too. You have to install ndiswrapper:
http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/ - pauljaroszewski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I see the Kubuntu page doesn't look like a 4 year designed it anymore.
- Markpdotcom, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Have to agree with DC... doesn't do anything for me this redesign. Content seems to overwhelm you!
- FreakTrap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"What do you see?"
A relatively small 20 x 12px arrow accompanied by approximately 8pt bold Tahoma font that says "Download Now." The must also be noted that the button is more of a supplementation to the rest of the page.
Contrary to this, the Firefox website has a much larger download button that stands out from the rest of the page much better. - thenome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Although, I think the new design looks less natural (or "human" ubuntu's statment); it does look look professional and actually displays correctly in the 3 big web browsers.
- cpbrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think it needed a redesign ... but i'm not convinced that this is the one it needed.
- WallPhone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Much agreed.
Anybody know who the designer of the old site was? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+12I'm just curious as to what's the incentive to using Ubuntu. Are there many applications for it? Can it read/create MS Office files that we use at work/school? Since I don't know much about Operating Systems I was just wondering why people actually use this. Is it because of security and being rebellious against Microsoft? Reply please.
- Nameless1, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Ok now you're just trolling us. Go read up Ubuntu wiki if you're really interested.
- punkrockscks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You probably have the Broadcom 43XX chipset, like me.
www.ubuntuguide.org
easy guide to getting it to work. - sk545, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5 Links on your right, left, middle, bottom, links within links, drop down links. Man, they really really suck with webpage design. Can't they make it simple just for once?
Just dumb. - IEatHamburgers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually, the only thing that I can see that sets this site apart from Web 2.0 is the lack of glass buttons. Other than that...
- cyberswat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Woooot and such ... They switched to Drupal on the main site ... the forums are still something different, but the main site is definitely a Drupal installation.
- assum09, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4The Human,Brown touch?
- Xenogis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It used to be simple... I hate the new design
- fishrjv, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I like the new design. Looks like they're trying to get away from typical web 2.0 stuff.
- ordminute, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2All that white space at the base it horrible. The two items, 'desktop' and 'server' look like lonely impoverished offerings. Fix that: the design is falling out the bottom of itself, it has no foundation. It makes the site and what it's selling feel weak.
Why is the Ubuntu Live conference given so much prevalence? Who _is_ that businessman in the white shirt? This appears to be a corporate conference promotional page, not a page that represents an _awesome_ operating system and similarly great community of millions of users.
Fix these things else lose the confidence of potential users. - DonCarcharo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Everything is certainly more compact, tighter and a bit more professional but it still doesn't have good flow (and the lack of margin space bugs me). I'm not sure it's any better or worse than the old design. Here's a link to the old design for reference:
http://web.archive.org/web/20060823064431/http://www.ubuntu.com/ - mozisbored, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The front page really does not do justice to Ubuntu; look at where they chose to place the desktop and server edition links, and the icons they used for them.. that's hardly inviting is it?
- Fratm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@diggcheesefries
I use it as my primary OS at home and at work, but as punkrockscks said, it's not that great for gaming, so I also have a windows box that is used just for a couple of games I play. (Supreme Commander, and WoW)
For all other applications, Linux works great, I can do everything in it that I can do in Windows.
-Fratm - praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+2Try Linux Mint. It's based of Ubuntu, so all Ubuntu packages will work and it is much nicer looking! That's what I'm using right now.
- DiggCheeseFries, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1does anybody use this as their main OS? how friendly is it with games and online content?
- punkrockscks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its great for everything but gaming. You can play windows games, but some don't work and you have to do some tweaking to get them to work. but its worth it to at least check it out and give it a chance.
