- tito13kfm, on 10/11/2007, -6/+58Digg users seem to think that Ubuntu is the only distro of linux. Sad to say, I jumped on the ubuntu bandwagon too, the community is very supportive.
There is a Wine for Windows (Thinking about that makes my head hurt) I wonder if Windows Wine running Windows wine would validate. - snecklifter, on 10/11/2007, -2/+39Its not just Ubuntu, Fedora does this as well so I'm guessing any distro with wine....
- schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -12/+42Old news, but still very funny. The whole 'validation' thing is more about saving face. See:

Just look how they ignored Vista's OEM hack. Privacy whines are just crocodile's tears. - Fordi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+23@pantsbandit:
Fads generally don't last 16 years and still have continuously increasing large scale support.
No, seriously. That's like saying 'computers are a fad that needs to die'. 1) It ain't gonna happen, and 2) you wouldn't actually want it to.
@NeoSporin (again):
There's a differnece 'tween Ubuntu and Hair Metal; Ubuntu doesn't suck monkey balls. - dattaway, on 10/11/2007, -3/+25"Its not Ubuntu, its GNU/Ubuntu."
just wait, it will happen! - 9a3eedi, on 10/11/2007, -2/+23So this pic ISNT fake after all o.o
http://images.wikia.com/uncyclopedia/images/c/cf/UbuntuGates.jpg - nxtwrld, on 10/11/2007, -5/+24I was an XP x64 user. I activated the OS, but every month or so, the activation was under the impression that I made hardware changes, so I had to activate again and again - then I finally got tired of calling MS every now and switched to ubuntu .....now that's what I call a Genuine Advantage of legal software ;)

My advice to you: crawl under a rock for the next 50 years. - ICDeadPpl, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13My openSUSE 10.2 also got validated as genuine Windows...
- xspinkickx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10.ogg is a container, ogg vorbis is the audio codec, ogg theoria is the video codec, and flac is lossless vorbis, which can be used in the ogg container but isn't recommended if I am not mistaken.
- bobbknight, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9The Screen shot was Knoppix 4.0, not Ubuntu. I was just reported on the Ubuntu Forum.
Looks like the Wine guys did a good job! - sirber, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Old news... linux (wine) always been genuine...
http://www.webalice.it/f.corriga/temp/mooo.jpg - Markpdotcom, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Well... you learn something new every day! I didn't know OGG also did video! :)
- jman8888, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6http://img146.imageshack.us/my.php?image=adflh4.jpg
- TheSolomon, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8I think it's safe to say "My (insert name of OS that is capable of running WINE) validated as genuine Windows." If it runs Wine, and multiple people running WINE have validated, your install of WINE will work too. No need to be redundant and post a million different variations, when WINE is the common factor here.
- derjames, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Hey that pic is great...
- docdocdoc9, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4C'mon, this is lame... IE4Linux reports as running under Win98, so WGA is bypassed. It's even documented on the wga website.

Don't be a schestowitz poser. - CarzorStelatis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Hahaha. Dugg just for the sheer comedy of seeing MS' DRM disintegrate again, even if I can't test it myself (don't use Linux).
- diggrj, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4ubuntu aint "Linux for Poseurs". It is one of the major factors for increased adoption of GNU/Linux in recent times and it IS the best distro for a beginner just coz its so damn easy to install.
- capitapf, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6This has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with ubuntu. Wine (not ubuntu) validates as genuine microsoft software. BTW, this is very old news.
- andshewas, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I just installed Linux Mint and it is very nice.
- mercurysquad, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Who did this mockup? Gates has his back turned towards the product he is allegedly recommending... I would put the Ubuntu logo etc. on the left side.

Touche - Spr0k3t, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Buried as OT
- handsomeramin, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Some of you that are trying to be funny, should stop, you are not funny and you kill my ears. No wonder more than half the posts in this article are being dugg down.
- superdoug, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2But does it run linux?
- JohnnyXmas, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Just to add to the list - I've done it with Slackware 10.
The reason it works is similar to the popular WGA workaround, where you redirect mpa1.microsoft.com to 127.0.0.1. WGA is set up to automatically assume authentication, so long as it can "find" the server (interaction beyond that is not required). The current assumption is that this was done to prevent user of complaining of DoS in the rare case that the authentication server(s) was not functioning properly. - psykiv, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Non-existent key on windows? Please explain.
- Ghost9, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@linkedlist
Most likely, or they're just keeping the option open. Market share consisting of pirated copies is still market share that your competitors don't have. - twelvedogs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0there's no windows key in wine
- twelvedogs, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1This is actually pretty easy, all you have to do is set your windows version to 2000 or lower, as there are NO cd key checks done on versions of windows earlier than xp. basically it checks your bogus or non-existant key and gives the all clear.
- dibos4U, on 05/04/2008, -0/+0very cool
http://anasheed.aarabiah.net/ - PLAYER36, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I've also got this to work with the version set to XP; this was with WINE 0.9.38 and Debian etch.
- flashingcurser, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Off topic.... (normal for digg)
You know slack 12 is now available - DavyBrasco, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Is it just me or does Bill look really tanned in this pic?
- rauz, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2So Wine Is Not Ubuntu? This is confusing.
- Spr0k3t, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3I can see that you typed some words back there, but all I see is "blah blah blah". Care to clarify?
- GaryS278, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0it's called the png format and it's a lot better than jpg for screenshots
- Bicep, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1http://www.markshuttleworth.com/archives/127
Ubuntu not in negotiations with Microsoft - ElectricSoup, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2IMO, that would be reasonable enough. You might not be entitled to run the software, but your sister on dial-up might be.
There's an interesting enough thread on Slashdot. There's a suggestion that the software is looking for negatives not positives -- actually checking for illegally copied Windows installations. If so, there's nothing really to see here. But at least it brightened the day of the guy who made the video. - renegadeafk, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2I'm still happy with my permanently activated XP
- Spr0k3t, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2This has been done before with WINE upgrading to IE7... the exe didn't install IE7, but it still got past the "genuine disadvantage" thing.
- imacjason, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0Mac OS X with WINE Validates as Genuine Windows....
- slapthemonkey, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1It's funny but not useful, I think.
- 9a3eedi, on 10/11/2007, -5/+0Also, did anybody realize how horrible twisted this article's title is?
- bobbocanfly, on 10/11/2007, -5/+0This is just too funny
Blogged about this:
http://bobbosgb.blogspot.com - tshrub, on 10/11/2007, -6/+0Please pull head out of ass, and know its WINE that is actually validating as Genuine, not Ubuntu.
Stupid Ubuntu fanbois running wild with this one to profess their love of their "Linux for Poseurs" - ilobmirt, on 10/11/2007, -10/+3richggs - You can't tell me what to do. I dug you up just to spite you! >:D
On topic: I'm not surprised. If security for the windows operating system was flawed, I'd doubt they'd get the security for the genuine advantage thing right too. -
