I've never used Linux before. Please disregard anything I say. - nofrak1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+32@rossthingy
We don't want to use Unix. We want to use an operating system that we can do what we want with. We want complete customizability and superior security, and we want to be able to install in on whatever hardware we want.
If you want to take all of Apple's preselected choices, along with the with the large premium on that, go for it. A lot of people like it. But don't try to shove it down my throat, or think that you're in some way superior just because I actually want to control my machine. - Kinjiru, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17a pdf or other downloadable (and compressed) format would be far better IMO.

let's start a flame war!!1 - Anonymous3, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Just a warning, no simple "download as an archive"/pdf option for offline use and about 300 pages of html + some images.
- netwerx, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10... or grab it in a "CHM" file.

(this isn't my account, a link i found with it)
I also recommend viewing in GnoCHM
get that at http://gnochm.sourceforge.net/ or hit your package manager in ubuntu. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6@gentoogrrrl said
"PS Ubuntu is for Noobs - and still better than Windows"
Ubuntu is an operating system that just works. If you want to compile your e your hardware, add some especial flags to optimize your OS for your architecture good for you, but that doesn't mean that your distro is better, it just mean that you're girlfriendless, lifeless and have more FREE time to spare at.
Gentoo is for a minority and that's good, linux is about choices, but if you look at the facts you wont see Gentoo in any real BIG server or just in a few ones. That doesn't mean that gentoo is bad of course, It just shows that neither the most big company with the biggest server give a ***** about gentoo and its optimizations.
The site ubuntu.com get a number of hits a day than the gentoo's site can only dream of, and guess what distro their servers are running? Yes, you're right.
PS: Don't get me wrong, I love gentoo like any other linux distro, but piss me off when people try to dimean the distros that JUST WORKS. - Phocion55, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8wget -r it
edit: actually, probably a bad idea if we want to keep the server up - scottjw, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3This would be free as in stolen not free as in beer I believe.
- oldbeggar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I have spent about two month to translate this book into Chinese. I think this is a good book for newbie of Linux.
- SilentSpyder, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2All praise the Tiki god Ubuntu
- shakajumbo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I've said it before, and I'll say it again.. Ubuntu is without a doubt the best software I've ever used. If you're a lifetime windows user like me, you really should give it a try. Once you get used to pasting commands in the terminal, it really becomes a breeze. Plus digg has sweet new tricks almost everyday.
- PureHeretic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2if you want a copy, theres one on demonoid
torrent it :D - JohnyD, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2@ flag8r
You don't have to download an entire torrent. For instance, with uTorrent you can easilly specify which files (within the torrent) to download and which to skip. Great for when you're looking for a particular song... but don't want the rest of the album, etc...
On topic, I'm installing Feisty Fawn on my P3 800 laptop tonight! I've been running slackware for the past 6 months and I think I'm going to give Ubuntu a try... just the live dvd for starters... don't want to pooch my slack install just yet. ;) - srg13, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2"get over yourself. you're probably still some kid who lives in his mom's basement or something."
I've used Linux for years, and yet never programmed in Assembly, or touched any Kernel code... And I have Steam running right now, which plays Counter-Strike Source and HL2 etc. just fine... phocion55 is right. This rosstizma guy is just trying to start a flame war by saying things that aren't even remotely true, and it's best if we all just digg him down and disregard what he says. - macjonesnz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Well done, we want China to be totally on Linux ! Good work!
- FlaG8r, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2There's also torrents of very large collections of computer ebooks (1800+ books) that contain this volume. Try searching from IsoHunt if you've got 16.5 gigs of free space.
- skrowl, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2This seems to be from Sam's (a for-profit book publisher). I'd say this is probably pirated.
- tryferos, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Hmm...file doesnt seem to work.
- netwerx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1works dandy for me, i'm in Feisty Fawn, running it in GnoCHM. Worked fine for me.
- evaldas, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2the book is not 'free' as in freedom
- racquetman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0I just installed ubuntu in one of my computers and I like it so far. This book is going to be very useful.
- malcam, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Looks like a dodgy version to me...
- SargeZT, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Nice work. This should be much easier than waiting for the site.
- rczik, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3Is this a pirated copy/posting? As in not sanctioned by the publisher or author?

Phocion is right - you've obviously never used Linux before and are too stupid to see how its far superior to Windows in pretty much every way.

get over yourself. you're probably still some kid who lives in his mom's basement or something. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -78/+5They could shorten the entire manual to:
If you want to use Unix, buy a Mac. Otherwise, enjoy spending the rest of your life rewriting kernel code and graphics drivers in assembly without any support for your custom made third party operating system.
If you want to play games, use windows.
