- Huxl3y, on 10/12/2007, -3/+74I'm still waiting for the Home Premium version
- diggfinity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+65Do they have a signed version?
- mrfreeziexp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+47I think I'll wait for Ubuntu Ultimate Limited Edition Signature Edition.
- noamsml, on 11/12/2007, -0/+38Let me guess, it costs twice as much as the regular edition of Ubuntu.
- twtmc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38Site is down. But I guess if you don't have internet you wouldn't know
heres a link to the torrent http://linuxtracker.org/torrents-details.php?id=3487 - rdanays, on 10/12/2007, -8/+44i think Ubuntu Ultimate is great for those who doesn't have internet access... so that once installed, you won't need 'sudo apt-get install' anymore. :)

- MaXiMuM32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20If there aren't any Linux drivers available for your wireless card try using NdisWrapper. You'll be able to use the windows drivers with it.
- computerdude33, on 11/12/2007, -1/+20By who? Shuttleworth? Torvalds? Stallman?
...Gates? - mooninite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17The distribution doesn't give you "widescreen support," the *software* under the distribution does.
As long as you have a decent video card (nVidia) it should support widescreen output without any problems.
Now, if you have some no-name cheapy video card... I doubt it'll work well without lots of messing with to get working in PCLOS.
PCLOS is just Mandriva, btw... nothing special. Just renamed and "forked" like so many other distributions are. - Batiu-Drami, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21Firstly, I'd say that Vista is much higher quality than you appear to think. If OSX was used by upwards of 90% of the computer-using population, I guarantee you there would be security exploits. Its the way it goes, and anyone who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves.
Secondly, I don't think Linux is that hard to use, its just you're used to how Windows works. I say this with roughly 2 hours of linux use and hundreds of hours of Windows use. I tried Linux, thought it was cool, and in some cases worked much better than XP (finding drivers, anyone?) but I couldn't be bothered learning to do everything all over again when I could do it on my Windows PC. I'm guessing this is the reason that most geeks will still use XP, even if they know Linux is as good or better. - twtmc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15But would you get the base or the upgrade?
- Avalontor, on 10/27/2007, -4/+16How many versions of Ubuntu is that now? Close to Vista's offerings I bet.
- xertys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Use GNOME Network Manager, or use wpa_passphrase to make a hash of your WPA PSK, paste it into a file and add two lines to your WiFi card's section under /etc/network/interfaces:
wpa-driver *the card's driver name*
wpa-conf *path to file where you pasted in output of wpa_passphrase*
You might need to Google your card to find out the chipset and what Linux driver supports it; the lspci command can help with that, e.g. Atheros chipsets use the "madwifi" driver.
Sure, it's different to Windows, but I set up WPA in about 30 seconds with this method, and it works every time. The people on Ubuntuforums.org will help you if you need any more advice. - ryan4477, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13way to make a newbie feel good guys, i hope you are proud of yourselves.
- Goosemaster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13my ideas:
1.this is digg. you don't ask for help here.
2.ubuntuforums.org
3.xorg.conf and just add the resolution
4. with such a new card you may have to have the latest drivers. - afx1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Mmmmm...that's some good distro!
- unknwn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10http://www.duggmirror.com
- lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10batui-drami, there is one simple reason why most people who have tried linux and like it still use windows. Games.
- kettlechips, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8sudo apt-get install 915resolution
Then restart and you're done. - fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Funny, in Windows excessive software is called bloat. In Linux, it's a feature!!!
- wastern, on 10/27/2007, -6/+13that is one of the problems in the linux world for the newcomer. The same reason why Vista is being slammed for having so many options, it confuses the user and they don't know which one to get.
I'm all for choice, but sometimes there's too much of a good thing - aldenhg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8My widescreen works just fine under Ubuntu with an ATi card. Sure, 3D support sucks, but that's not the screen's fault.
- dig412, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Most of the time widescreen problems come from Intel chipsets. Xorg cant use resolutions that aren't listed in the video bios, and widescreen resolutions usually don't appear there.
Theres a program called 915resolution that solves this problem. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I still use Dapper because it's stable and the support is longer than Edgy and will be supported longer than Feisty. I'm fine with not getting bleeding edge stuff, I just want my computer to work without having to reconfigure or upgrade every three months.
Ubuntu >>>>>> Windows - twtmc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6http://linuxtracker.org/torrents-details.php?id=3487
- Spr0k3t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Wastern: I'm a first time Linux user as of one week. There is a huge amount of functionality that I was not aware of in Linux. I thought there would be a huge learning curve but after reading information I found on ubuntuguide.org it was a cake walk. You should download the desktop live disc and try it on your computer. If you install it on your computer system, it has a fantastic partitioning tool on the disc so it won't mess up your other installed OS.
I have Vista on another drive and when I made the move from XP to Vista I wanted to compare it to a Linux distribution. With all the direct support I've found and the wonderful help of the copious amounts of documentation, I'm going to stick with Linux and let my trial with Vista expire. - Spr0k3t, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5lukas88 is dead on. I've got an 8GB partition I've left for an XP install to play games that refuse to work under WINE. It's not very often as Counter Strike Source runs better in Linux.
- cheech_sp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"I'd be surprised if your average myspace user (IE your average computer user) could even get it installed."
How many of these users have even installed Windows? - firstc624, on 10/12/2007, -10/+14i don't honestly think it would be great for those who don't have access. I mean there is a lot in that build that has to do w/ internet capability. it would be easier download a differ version if they don't want that...plus it is 1.7 gigs. fi they don't have access how the hell they gonna download that.
Just my thoughts though
And i run Edgy. - SAOSiN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5a linux distro signed by gates, would sell for a lot on ebay...
- twtmc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@mrfx2
I agree on some levels, but I still use ubuntu. One of the drawbacks of sabayon is the extremely slow load time. On my computer, it takes 35 seconds for ubuntu, 45 for windows xp, and 80 for sabayon. Also, I found the package manager a bit hard to use, and there wasn't any sort of guide for the distro like with ubuntuguide.org - vstmonger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If they would just work on copying the way that Windows install applications, with a simple point and click installer. Ubuntu would rule.
- TheeMahn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I am the creator of "Ubuntu Ultimate Edition" & "Christmas Edition", first I would like to apologize for the downtime it must be the "Digg effect" it has been downloaded almost 8000 times in 3 days. I may have to change to another hosting service, that hopefully can handle the traffic. I really hope you enjoy the release because I don't know if I will have time to make another. Maintaining 2 sites, programming and writing pages for the new site at the moment. Perhaps after I get done with the HTML I may have time to make another, but it will be a long while from now. Thanks for your interest.
- Meshyf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Definitely going to be installing this on my laptop as soon as the download is completed.
- modestmelody, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Two monitors with nVidia is considerably easier, and the trick with different resolutions is editing the metamode under xorg.conf (currently probably says something like "1280x1024 1280x1024" change that to say, "1450x1000 1280x1024".
- Elranzer, on 10/27/2007, -0/+3Ever double-click a .DEB or .RPM file from the file browser? Works similar to the Windows MSI installers...
- barius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3In Windows the software is tied to the kernel which slows everything down, not so in Linux. In Linux even the web browser can be removed with a single command, and it won't leave any Registry garbage behind.
- democracysucks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I can get your resolution working for you.
Send me an e-mail at REMOVETHISTEXTerusan@gmail.com.
Basically, everyone makes it really complicated if you look on ubuntuforums.org or such sites. But all you have to do is add the correct frequencies, manually add your resolution to the default depth, and then restart X. It's really, really easy, and if you e-mail me, I'll help you through it. - insub2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yeah, open a terminal and type:
sudo apt-get install *list of packages that are included in the ultimate edition that you don't already have*
(p.s. site went down before i could check it out...but i figure from the description and the comments that is was just ubuntu with more applications. so someone correct me if i am wrong.) - twtmc, on 10/12/2007, -17/+19The quality of a potato is higher than vista. Even if vista were sold in 15 lb sacks for $4 I wouldn't buy it.
- blackjack75, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Just click on Network connections and select your device. Then open a full screen terminal and google it.
- Spr0k3t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Lack of 64bit support for flash is not at the fault of the developers of Ubuntu, rather Adobe for their narrow direction. In the interim, you can use Gnash on 64bit which supports up to Flash 7. As for the mouse, you have to configure the buttons to work. A quick way to get your buttons working is to install the add-on Mouse Gestures currently at 1.5.2. If you need further help with getting the buttons working elsewhere in Ubuntu, check out the ubuntuforums.org and ask for assistance.
- inkubux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Looks good, but I prefer keeping my instalation clean and install only what I need, there is 6 music player in this distro it's a bit to much.
But good woek anyway :)
anybody have screenshots? - raid517, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OK since the site is down and there is no link to any active forums discussing this custom distro and no help from anywhere else, can anyone give me a hint of what's happening when I run the installer?
Each time I try I get this error:
"Completely remove linux-image-generic:
subprocess pre-removal script returned error exit status 1"
I mean it's not a good start when they can't even get the installer right. - inkubux, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4yup 0*2=0 :D gotta love ubuntu
- LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I had it working on my nvidia 7800gt, but i could not for the life of me figure out how to get it to detect both of my monitors (which have different resolutions)"
The newest nVidia drivers have a nice gui interface for setting up dual monitors - that's what I'm using right now and it's wonderful. - democracysucks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love how people always talk about how much of a pain it is to click next a few times. The package manager is ok when you know the name of the package, you're connected to the internet, and you don't need anything special.
Other than that, installing in Windows is much easier. You can download and save all your programs so you don't need to be online next time you want to install them. Clicking next is not difficult at all, and the dialogs usually involve options which are hardly accessible to Linux users unless they 1) manually search for and install optional components or 2) know what commands to execute and which packages to install for extra features which are available to Windows users via use of a simple checkbox or radial button.
Clicking next a few times is far from complicated. Quit sensationalizing. - hass, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3No thanks. I'll wait for the Ubuntu Ultimate Limited Numbered Signiture Edition GNU Linux to come out.
- haveacigar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2try ndisgtk.. it is a graphical installer and has all the needed applications included.
