- gherikill, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15It is called automatix. Download it and it will make your life a lot easier in the Linux world.
http://www.getautomatix.com/ - jiminoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I'm finally windows free. Ubuntu machines plus a mac laptop = no need for windows. I'm not a gamer so I have everything I need.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Then fire up Synaptic and click away.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Or you know, you could just download a script and run it to do all of that instead of you typing it in. But of course, there's absolutely no way to use Linux without the command line... *rolleyes*.
Admit that Windows package management (or lack thereof) is a piece of *****, then we'll talk about Linux. - fullback, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Here are two things that tend to baffle the new user to Ubuntu. Don't laugh, because this is serious stuff that can be frustrating. Having a clear user interface and instructions is the difference between a good or bad experience:
1. During installation, the graphic display for making a partition asks the user how much disk space they want to free up for the installation. The average person believes that means it will be the size of the partition they're creating to install Ubuntu. That is their first mistake because it does just the opposite. If they "free up" 30% of their hard disk, they end up with 70% of the disk for Ubuntu and the 30% for their current installation of Windows, since that is quite typical. The Windows user trying Ubuntu.
2. Everyone and every tutorial says, "Just type 'sudo apt-get install *'" or, "Just type this or that." Or, they are told to edit a .lib file, but the file can't be found using file search and no one ever tells when where to find the file. The problem is that nowhere (and I mean NOWHERE) does anyone tell you WHERE to type these commands.
These may seem silly, but they are not. They are the first steps on the road to frustration for people who are not stupid, but are unable to find truly clear documentation that is logically written. - nusblog, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8http://duggmirror.com/linux_unix/Ubuntu_Tutorials/

I strongly disagree, I recently installed Ubuntu Edgy on my laptop and found it far easier to install than XP pro. I didn't have to worry about downloading all the drivers, security updates and all those crap, all I did was pop-in the install CD, and answer a few simple questions. The amount of time needed for Ubuntu to be fully functional is far shorter comparing to a XP install. And you are not talking to a techy either, I didn't know anything about linux other than the well written tutorials on the community support site (I am not an "IT" person by any mean, but I am very surprised how easy it is if you simply do some reading and follow the direction). - wunch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Multimedia codecs, PDF, and much, much more are also available on the Ubuntu Guide. The only thing this guy adds is parental control.
http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu_Edgy - MateFrio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Before you can appreciate automatix or Easy Ubuntu you need to do at least one setup without. Then you also learn something.
- DarkDakota, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've never had a problem with the stock install and getting wi-fi up, have you?
- mikewhite314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hmm...I switched to Ubuntu and I haven't started working out...
- PatrickBrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It is not that difficult for anyone who has worked with Linux before. For those who haven't, programs such as automatix sure make things easier.
However, for those that have worked with Linux, automatix makes you feel a little warm and fuzzy inside knowing that you can spend your time doing more important things. It also gives you a sense of "Well in my day, I had to manually install 50 libraries that were not available in any repository, you ungrateful bastards!" :) - zenprowler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2glad you said that! i had a big problem installing ubuntu - caused in the end by the graphics card - it got to the point that i was looking for tutorials on how to use the tutorials ;-)
it seems as an 'absolute beginner' i was expected to know all commands and what they did from the word 'go' - i did get it installed eventually and it's living up to my expectations but i certainly didn't find it easy to install - - klept, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also you might try easyubuntu for most of the codecs you have to add to the basic Ubuntu os, especially for the multimedia. It will probably only take 10 minutes.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Synaptic is just an interface to all these packages. There is not a "Codecs" package, you need to install all the aforementioned packages with Synaptic as well, and Synaptic is not something Windows users are familiar with, especially that names of packages are exotic, unless you know the name of the packages, you get no result finding them in Synaptic.
- timfitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ubuntu finds the wi-fi card no problem, IF you have an Intel wi-fi card. Otherwise it's a little bit of a pain to set up.
- hermeneutic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I just tried out the Ubuntu AMD64 version 6,10 live (Edgy Eft) install CD on my HP Pavilion dv5000 laptop (built in 2006). Try as I might, and I'm a computer geek (on Windows anyway) I could not get it to recognize my wireless drivers (built in) Ubuntu/Linux ready for prime time - I think not. But thanks for the link to the tutorials.
Will automatix fix this? - sabrebutt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2What is so freakin hard about "sudo apt-get install * "??
You need it broken down for you?
Make me root, and then apt-get, install all of these packages at once...
I've been using ubuntu about a year and this is something I could do in my sleep.
Of course you're probably used to opening internet explorer, downloading an EXECUTABLE BINARY FILE from who-knows-where, installing it, the program crashing, having to find some dll file, placing that in your directory somewhere, etc. Yeah, that's a lot more logical, eh?
Take some time to learn and don't be afraid of a black box with a blinking cursor. - Technopundit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Information dead-end.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2> it's install is more straight forward & user-friendly than Windows XP
I have to disagree here. Software installation is Ubuntu's achilles' heel. - DarkDakota, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Alright, Clam down bitches!! This is a good article about a Ubuntu Linux guide. Nothing more or less. Go flame war somewhere else!!!
Seriously, is a frank discussion of the intended article now completely out of the question?
Geek is one thing, but annoying geek?
get a life, or better yet, an original and interesting opinion. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Absolutely. You don't need such with modern systems such as Windows or the Mac.
- Technopundit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1What about wi-fi?
- MySchizoBuddy, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5the fact that you need a tutorial for such simple tasks, tells me Linux is not not fit for mass consumption
- rizzo011, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1link dead
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2"Install Multimedia Codecs for Ubuntu
sudo aptitude install gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-gl gstreamer0.10-plugins-base gstreamer0.10-plugins-good gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse libxine-extracodecs w32codecs"
This is not user-friendly as it's supposed to be. I prefer double-clicking an executable file such as in PC-BSD, Windows or Mac OS X. - MySchizoBuddy, on 10/12/2007, -13/+5it doens't come installed with ubuntu. or does it
If i have to download and install it through a command line then whats the point.
installing automatix
echo "deb http://www.getautomatix.com/apt edgy main" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list
wget http://www.getautomatix.com/apt/key.gpg.asc
gpg --import key.gpg.asc
gpg --export --armor 521A9C7C | sudo apt-key add -
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install automatix2
No thanks. This isn't easy either. Just admit it things are not easy to install in Linux. and move on. stop trying to convince us.
