- dpjames, on 10/12/2007, -0/+52UBUNTU STUDIO WILL NOT RELEASE TOMORROW
http://www.ubustu.com/globe/2007/04/17/ubuntu-studio-release-date-update/ - trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Then your "Linux Guru" is probably lying about "working on kernels" I am typing this right now on a macbook pro with full graphics accelleration, it took me about half an hour to install from scratch with everything working, GPU acelleration, suspend / resume, wireless, even the keyboard backlight works by default. If you need any help I am Jordan_U in the #ubuntu channel on irc.freenode.net.
- Yaku83, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Yeah, installing Ubuntu is pretty hard. I had to reach down, hit the eject button on my cd-rom drive, put in the disc and then hit that same eject button again. Following this, I had to do the previously stated one time each on two other computers. Such a traumatic experience, I'm still in therapy.
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22High-res screenshots to those who are interested:
Ubuntu Studio & Ardour2 Screenshots
,----[ Quote ]
| The first screenshot is a clean view of the Ubuntu Studio desktop. It's
| hard to see (as this 1600×1200 desktop shot has been resized) but the
| custom theme they have created is simply awe inspiring...

With only a few days experience using Linux I was able to install FGLRX, XGL, and Beryl fairly quickly (A couple hours of tinkering and reading message board posts). I'd hardly call myself a guru.
I can't believe that someone with the expertise to hack the kernel could possibly lack the skill set to install and configure software on Linux. How could he install and configure his programming tools if he can't get something as simple as Beryl/Compiz installed? - vegascoop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Your "Linux Guru" sounds like he was just blowing you off.
- richbradshaw, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Have your tried Feisty yet?
Just enable Desktop Effects and you have Compiz activated. Compiz conmes preinstalled.
If you want Beryl, it's now in normal repositories, Universe and Multiverse comes activated by default, so all you need to do is
sudo apt-get install beryl
beryl-manager
and you are away. Wireless support is much better as well - no more hunting down drivers or messing with ndiswrapper.
You can donate via paypal I think :) - trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Why are you trying to install 5.10? that's a year and a half old now. We're at 7.04 now
- grexeo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I'm all for a pretty desktop, and it certainly looks better than the default ubuntu desktop, but why did they copy the black-gloss look of Vista?
- Swivelstick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Think I'll wait for Horny Hog
- wedderburn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12we are not releasing tomorrow, its going to come a few days after feisty.
Maybe we'll have better screen shots to show too ;). cause those ones don't reveal much. - corevette, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10well...their next release is called 'Gutsy Gibbon'
- mfalk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13i'm waiting for "Stabby Stag"
- JimmyRyan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Why did everyone digg him down like that? It is his opinion that he doesn't like Ubuntu but it is a plus that even with his dislike he sees that it is improving.. Sometimes I don't understand what we are doing here.. lol!
- AcesJack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Damn it...
- corevette, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8ask in ubuntuforums.org
or try downloading the 'alternative cd' - cpbrown, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Please can someone post the theme file online when it is released... looks awesome. :)
- bartbrinkman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5YES, this is what Linux and Ubuntu needed; some serious attention to (exclusive) software.
- saturn5, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"why did they copy the black-gloss look of Vista" - imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
- d0odx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7i cant Wait for this.
- dymaxium, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The names are definitely unique, but I'm not much of a fan of the animal concept. Something a little tougher sounding would do me right.
Either way, I'm impressed with the distribution's concepts for the desktop OS. Simple and clean with just what you absolutely need out of the box. - dpjames, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4its a custom theme made by the ubuntu studio team
- Burritoking924, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6sudo update-manager -c -d in terminal
Theres your upgrade. - Markpdotcom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4End of April! Booooo! I was just talking to someone about studio being out in the next few days!
Thanks for making me look like a jackass! :( - immrlizard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I am anxious to see this in use. I don't have the $$$ to buy all of the adobe software so this sounds good to me.
@ bendedavis
For a $350 savings I would be willing to use audacity. Easier or not, audacity is a decent program and much less memory conscious then anything adobe makes. We have a couple CS2 and CS3 versions of their whole studio and it is nice, but good luck having something else running when it is.
- jasz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3anyone here knows if there'll be an Aperture-like open source application in for Linux? I love to use F-Spot/GIMP but managing RAW files has been a problem, I've been having to go back and forth between OS's to convert RAW to TIFF
- Ub3rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm excited to try out the Studio. I'm not terribly familiar with all the packages going into this distro, but here's hoping that they include something that meets or beats AVISynth and MeGUI for encoding.
I also have my fingers crossed that the next specialized distro is an official Canonical HTPC package. - bendedavis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I guess I'm just used to Audition after using it for a few years, since it was Cool Edit Pro. It's so much easier to use than Audacity.
- dpjames, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Many of the programs are already availble in the standard Feisty repos. There will also be a standalone UbuntuStudio source for packages that aren't in the Feisty repos.
- bendedavis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2One of the main things keeping me from moving to Ubuntu is lack of good recording software. I can't stand Audacity. I use Audition 2.0 right now. Those screenshots look okay, hopefully it'll be good enough for me to switch over for good.
- democracysucks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I can't seem to find the answer elsewhere:
Does Ubuntu Studio contain any packages that I can't simply install from the Ubuntu repos? I know some of the studio software is hard to find packages for, but if it's really just using the Ubuntu repos as the wiki seems to indicate, then I really don't see the point in getting Ubuntu Studio. - Yogurth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@dpjames, I know about UbuntuStudio theme and while its well crafted it does not suit me, so I asked which theme was on that Fedora screenshot running same app as UbuntuStudio, I guess You missunderstood me. Imho that theme on Fedora looks better paired with Ardour than default UbuntuStudio theme.
Anyway looking forward to RT kernel in UbuntuStudio. - kalidav, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've tried heaps of thing. Ended up nuking the MBR in the process so I gave up.
- DigitalJester, on 10/12/2007, -14/+15As much as I hate ubuntu, I'm actually pretty excited about feisty. It's going to really help in bringing linux upto windows levels on the support and usability side.
- strabes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13rd post down on this page: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=442327
- strabes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@kalidav: MBR is such an easy fix. If you nede to install GRUB, go here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows
If you need to reinstall the windows MBR, just boot into the windows cd and run "fixmbr" - Kiamo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Does anyone know if this distro will be weaker at anything else? As in would there be a downside to using this over the normal Fiesty release?
- Ub3rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What don't you like about Audacity? Just curious.
- slapout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1From what I've read they are looking at making it a distro focused on audio/video production. To do this, they are looking at taking some stuff out. I saw OpenOffice mentioned as one thing they were considering dropping. I'm sure it would be available for download, just not in the basic install.
- immrlizard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't think that this is a distro. I think it is just an add on.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudioPreparation Here is a link that shows what is needed to install it. - BrainedChild, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How is Audacity hard to use?
Unlike Cool Edit/Audition, the waveform editor and track layout are the same window. To record, you just choose the source from the drop down list and hit the big red circle.
The only thing audacity really needs is the ability to snap to a grid like soundforge. - slapout, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4"why did they copy the black-gloss look of Vista"
How do you know that Vista didn't copy them? :-) - jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1looks awesome!
- inkhead, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4I really wish somebody would make an "Out of the Box" Ubuntu for MacBook Pros, that had all the advanced graphic features. I don't have time to spend two days to figure out all the hacks to enjoy the coolest graphic features, nor the patience required to find a billion required files. If Ubuntu sold a out of the box solution I would pay $500 for a DVD to come in the mail like this.
- fremeer, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4ummm it looks like the vista theme...
- Yogurth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I wonder which theme is this with Ardour running on Fedora, can someone please give me a pointer. I will dl UbuntuStudio for myself but I'm not really into glossy themes and will try to find a more matching theme to Ardour like this one on screenshot.

- BobbyMC, on 07/21/2008, -9/+3It BETTER be good.
- kalidav, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3I still can't install Ubuntu since 5.10. Always gets stuck at "Mounting local file systems" or whatever. Oh well. =(
