- moonlonely, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32I'm downloading it now... something tells me I'm going to have another long night of tinkering ahead of me.

Looks great...can't wait to try it out : )
Great job Ubuntu Studio Team! - Visceral, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29Wow, it looks damm nice. The standard Ubuntu needs help from the art guys who did this.
- jus1haz2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25Their site seems to be struggling. If it goes down you can get the torrent from here.
http://www.thefixed.org/digg/UbuntuStudio_7.04.torrent
Remember to seed :) - joejaxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19No it should not. We kept the release as 7.04 because it is based on Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn. Changing it would only confuse ubuntu and non-ubuntu users alike (as there is not a Ubuntu 7.05). If we decide to do a disc reroll it will be 7.04.1.
- wedderburn, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24seems like most of your gripes with ubuntu are to do with your ***** brick ATI card.
- srg13, on 10/12/2007, -2/+191. No you don't. If it it's not in Add and Remove programs, you can use Synaptic.
2. This is Adobe's fault
3, 4 and 5. These are all ATI's fault
Don't blame Ubuntu for these things.
"requires A LOT OF TINKERING"
Trust me, it doesn't.
Plus, tinkering is fun (if you want to play around with the internals of the OS) - Zeebo13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16I apologize for replying to myself, but I wanted to be more specific and didn't realize you could only edit for 2 minutes.
Ubuntu Studio has their own repository for the few new things they bring to the table, if you want to add that to your feisty build, just do:
sudo su -c 'echo deb http://archive.ubuntustudio.org/ubuntustudio feisty main >> /etc/apt/sources.list'
wget -q http://archive.ubuntustudio.org/ubuntustudio.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add - && sudo apt-get update
Then you have access to all of the new things they added, namely the new art. So, like I said, ubuntustudio-artwork for the icon set, sounds, splash, wallpapers, logon screen, and gtk theme. Everything in that repository is listed at http://ubuntustudio.org/downloads . - generalloy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Your annoyances should rest with Adobe and ATI.
- rusty_g, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15it looks so pretty!!!
- sabrebutt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I actively reward companies that make linux easy for the end user.
Maybe that's why I've never had these problems.
And please, don't diss a terminal until you know how to use a terminal. - joejaxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14overall? No. We are not allowed to ship (distribute) the VST SDK because of the license Steinberg has it under.

http://ubuntustudio.org/files/UbuntuStudio_7.04.torrent - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Way to make some sweeping generalizations based off of your experience. Clearly, most people haven't had the same troubles you've had, seeing how popular the distro has gotten. I've installed X/ubuntu on two computers without a hitch. Besides, your issues aren't all that crippling - I'm not sure if your first point is even valid. I've never had to absolutely use the terminal to install software.
Thanks for contributing, though. - TheRealToma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Yes there is. The external repo has more up to date packages such as ardour2 and some alsa firmware drivers stuff. Also a few realtime/lowlatency audio parameters setup by default.
- joejaxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I think most of the problems you have listed are the result of Hardware Manufacturers not supporting linux and/or open source drivers. This is not just an issue in Ubuntu, it is across the board in most GNU/Linux distributions. Even in Windows the Manufacturers and OEM's create drivers for inclusion in Windows ( just a note if you did not know that). So your problem should actually be with the Hardware manufacturers :) If you do not like the fact that a piece of hardware you purchased does not work on GNU/Linux you should contact the company and express your concerns. They will not hear or support it until they hear that the majority population wants it.
- pHr34kY, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11...except this isn't really the work of CanoNical.
- wastern, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10For those asking for a 64-bit version, do you really need it? Can't you just check out what packages they are using for their audio/video editing and just go install those apps on your current distro. Seems like it would be a lot easier then downloading an iso, burning it, and reinstalling your OS just to get a couple new apps. That goes for pretty much everyone actually, unless you just setup a new system with the intent to do studio work in Linux
This is just Ubuntu with a new theme and some extra bundled apps after all isn't it - joejaxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9You should use this, it continues the download after being disconnected (in the same directory that your current 400mb image is):
so open a terminal
cd to where ever that 400mb image is and run this and it will continue:
wget -c http://mirror.imbrandon.com/ubuntustudio/7.04/ubuntustudio-7.04-alternate-i386.iso
wget -c is really great for large downloads - imeddy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Please tell me it has VST support? Please...?
- dpjames, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10yay! remember, if you already have some form of Ubuntu installed, you can just integrate Ubuntu Studio into your existing Feisty drive. Its in the repos!
http://www.ubustu.com/globe/2007/05/10/ubuntu-studio-released/ - Zeebo13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9The art is absolutely top notch, I second the request for their help in future Ubuntu releases. Although, I'm not completely sold on the hue of blue for the scrollbars and such. I love the icons though, for anyone looking for less orange icons, these are excellent.
I just downloaded ubuntustudio-artwork in my feisty install. - imeddy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@JoeJaxx
Hmm that's what I thought. Too bad.
@mandeep
Yeah that's exactly why I still use windows to record music...
Btw I see my original comment is being dugg down, maybe because not everyone knows what VST is?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_Studio_Technology - TheRealToma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Install 'linux-restricted-modules-lowlatency' to get the default nvidia drivers back. (That is, if youre using the lowlatency kernel ("uname -r")
- shotgunsaint, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7The major difference is that Ubuntu Studio automatically blocks comments that post the same question that was posted 3 or 4 times before.
- slapout, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6"Yes, great job ... of bundling a few already available apps that anyone interested in linux + audio/graphic/video editing would already have."
Yes, but this distro also has a kernel customized for this type of work. - altis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7That is probably the best looking Gnome and GTK theme I've ever seen. Is there any way i can download just the theme part (icons, gtk theme, desktop background, login sceen)?
Edit: nevermind, i found the packages in the repo - MWeather, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I've neveer needed to install anything to get USB to work in Linux. I have had to slipstream USB drivers onto a custom install disk just to gen XP to install, though.
- jackyyll, on 10/12/2007, -12/+17Did you ever consider that you're just ***** retarded and don't know how to operate a linux operating system? Way to suck.
- MWeather, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5It's for low-memory systems. It uses a command line ncurses based installer instead of the pretty GUI installer.
- TheRealToma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Swing by the IRC channel on freenode (#ubuntustudio) and someone will help!
- slythfox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Looks really nice. I can't wait to try it out.
- TheRealToma, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8What a great idea and a fantastic way to make a production system work well!
Shame theres no 64bit build yet :(
Looks like my production machine will have to wait. - rafaelcapanema, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4@fatas
Just add the Ubuntu Studio repository ( deb http://archive.ubuntustudio.org/ubuntustudio feisty main ) and install the "ubuntustudio-artwork" package. - russellnation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i've been waiting for this for a while... not that my fiesty fawn isn't good enough as it is.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4"i dont need to build a kernel or compile crap to make my usb hub work."
Are you talking out your ass? You sound like someone who has not used a modern-day linux distro. - Ellsass, on 11/05/2008, -0/+4@pHr34kY
October is the 10th month.
7.10 will be in October 2007 (it's every six months). - johnnelson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Good job......keep up the good work!
- Zaggynl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Agree!
Priorities should be:
1-GOOD drivers, if you hardware isn't supported, you're not going anywhere.
2-GOOD applications, lots of choice is fun, but what if nothing does it all? - djsamsel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3thanks for the suggestion, but it didn't work. i've tried updating with envy, also tried using the restricted driver manager, no luck there either. any other suggestions are welcome.
- mercurysquad, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3For any new linux users who might get confused by the previous comment: Note that ndiswrapper only works for wireless or ethernet card drivers, not audio or anything else.
- Mandeep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4VSTs is way too hard to get to work in Linux without support from vendors. The main reason (besides the lack of good programs) that I don't use Linux is because I wouldn't be able to use my VSTs while creating music.
- trogdoor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Probably not hacked, they probably just use the same server for other things and redirected away from it so it wouldn't get hammered.
- gthrank, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3careful - there's something wrong here. The URL ubuntustudio.org redirects to somewhere else. Someone has messed with their DNS entry.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3wow, those screen shots looks really nice
- frozenyoghurt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Does this version support booting from cd/dvd? ie: do i have to actually install it to try it out?
- joejaxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4No there is not a livecd. We did not see the need for one since people generally do not do professional work off of livecds. example: Try doing a real ardour session off the livecd. It is not generally a good idea. Most of the enhancements would be better seen on a real install (ie testing the lowlatency kernel etc). So we did not see the need to create another ~1.x GB image just for people to try out the theme.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Anyone know where to find that login image it is so sexy.
- bobbagoose, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5@tracker2xl
You are an ignorant gimp.....
1. No.
2. Not Ubuntu, Adobe
3. WTF?!
4. Learn?!
5. *****. Might as well give up now then.
In the end, for many people, Ubuntu Linux offers something unique. It is opening doors and paving the way for an alternative open source future. For those people Ubuntu is not useless. It is USEFUL. I find it USEFUL. I can do many of the same things as I can with any other operating system. Fact. Not all my hardware works out of the box. But I don't blame Ubuntu. As I see it, to blame Ubuntu for such things is ignorant. You are Ignorant. You are a GIMP -
