Interestingly enough, I bet you could take the comments from one of them and put them in any other, and no one would know the difference. - t4inted, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11"The Server Edition of the June 1 Ubuntu release will include a mechanism to set up a standardized, certified, and supported LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) server with a single command"
Am I the only one who thinks this sounds seriously sexy? I mean like, really sexy? - linshots, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11shots of the RC: http://shots.osdir.com/slideshows/slideshow.php?release=651&slide=3&title=ubuntu+6.06+rc+screenshots
- chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Someone in their infinite wisdom decided that anyone who wasn't very technically inclined, wouldn't want to, or shouldn't be changing their screensaver settings. I mean, who would want to use the screensaver to actually display personalized text? The defaults are fine for everyone.
Unless, of course, you are a regular Joe. Then screensavers and games are pretty important. You can install a different screensaver manager. But be forewarned, it manages more than your screensaver....
After battling that for a while, and giving up to just accept defaults forever rather than use something that looks *very* ugly and changes other things. I ran into another Gnome "this option shouldn't be available via a GUI" and I had no easy workaround to even try on that one.
While I later found easier ways around my hassles, here is how I originally fixed the problem. It worked great for me until I learned more:
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop - seventoes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Do you know how time works?
- skidzilla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Klik : http://klik.atekon.de/
Automatix : http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=138405
Though I prefer EasyUbuntu : http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/ :) - bilangew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Just like Ubuntu Breezy Final has a floppy access error in Gnome (gave some error when double-clicking on the floppy icon in "my computer"), just like windows 98 used to crash when one would execute C:/con/con , just like a fresh, not updated and non-firewalled Windows XP installation would get a kadozillion of viruses when being exposed to the Internet, etc etc...
Bugs are everywhere, Ubuntu is no exception. That being said dont forget most of the guys behind Ubuntu does that work for free, and considering that only, im pretty amazed by the quality of their work. - arizonagroove, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@gnomeuser - Have you actually used dapper? Is any of what you say based on your own experience or are you just listing problems you've seen other people have?
I've been playing with dapper for a few weeks now on a couple of machines at work and had no problems. I'm so happy with it in fact that I installed it on my home machine the other day. No problems so far. I'm much happier with it than Fedora Core 4. Firewire drives and bluetooth both 'just work' for a normal user for starters. - chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"Used to be there was a screensaver preferences in the menu under 'preferences', i'm sure that's how it was in 5.1"
It is. But screen saver options are not there anymore. You can change which screensaver you want to use, but thats it. The Gnome developers made that decision. Make Gnome easy by removing ALL unessential options.
It bothers me because I prefer Gnome over KDE.
"More customizable then KDE? ... Gnome has no options."
Compared to KDE, Gnome has almost no GUI customizations and advanced task options. This isn't always a bad thing. However, Gnome devs seem to be removing things that "Grandma" would normally want to use.
"But KDE sucks so this is a bad situation."
I hate that what you say is true. I am crossing my fingers for KDE 4, and hoping that the Gnome developers do something innovative... like listen to Gnome users. - Haroldx, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Dapper is going to rock. I'm just waiting for the non-beta to come out. June 1st guys. :D
http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/dapperbeta - brentcore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3xubuntu is massively underrated--I did some (un)professional benchmarks comparing it with Slackware, a distro known for it's speed, and I got pretty much equal results for the two. Not to mention xubuntu is easier to setup, and if you are in a rush, it works with automatix.
If you are trying to bring a friend/relative's computer back from the dead, xubuntu + automatix = quick easy linux. - a7bat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Automatix is a pack that installs codecs, plugins, programs with just a few clicks. The Dapper version is still getting some work, so I'd wait till that's ready to go. I've used it on Breezy.
http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=77
Klik is a method of running programs like in OS X. Just download the program you want, click and it's running.
http://klik.atekon.de - dolson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5chrono, you're very right... It's sad that the GNOME developers don't listen to us, their userbase. And the Ubuntu guys stand behind the GNOME decision too, telling us to open bug reports - which, when we do, get closed as NOTABUG or WONTFIX.
Very sad... If I had time and resources I'd fork GNOME to something more usable. Forking is bad. But treating your users like imbeciles is bad too.
Too bad I can't stand KDE anymore, or I'd switch back. Oh well. - Ensnared, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2KDE doesn't suck. I love KDE. I used Gnome from the 0.x days up until 4 or so months ago, but I'm not switching back. The fact the the Gnome developers decided to remove the option to print only even/odd pages in the printing-dialogue because having it would be too confusing for the user just says it all with regards to the design philosophy behind Gnome.
I used to think KDE sucked, that is was ugly and too simplistic, and reminded me too much of the parts I dislike about the Microsoft Windows UI. Then I decided to give it an honest try once again since it had been 5-6 years since the last time I even bothered installing it, and I really haven't looked back.
Been running Kubuntu Dapper for the last 3 months now, and I've had no problems whatsoever (other than sound not working on my laptop, but that's ALSA's fault and is the same in any distro and any version of the kernel and/or ALSA). I'm looking forward to the final release :) - Majdaa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3From: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DapperReleaseSchedule
" June 1st FinalRelease " - Ensnared, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@bilangew: That's pretty much how I felt about KDE for a very long time too, which is why I stuck with Gnome (though I also alternated between that and other plain WM's, but I stayed away from KDE). But a lot has happened since then, and I can't tell you if it was with KDE 3.0 or KDE 3.5 most of those changes happened, but it sure is worth checking it out now. One can make it look more like Gnome by using the QtCurve theme for instance, and re-arranging panels if one likes, as well as a lot of other means.
Seriously, if the way KDE looked back in the 2.x days is a significant reason why you use Gnome, I'd say you owe it to yourself to take another look at the current KDE version :) - Drizzit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What is the deal with these people and these screenshots. They're worthless IMO. Ooh here's a shot of the desktop, ooh! here's a shot of the taskbar. They do it for every increment of the release it seems wether there have been updates to the grapics or not.
Also why does it seem that anytime a linux distro is mentioned there's this plug from osdir with their screenshots as the first post? Perhaps they're plugging their site and know how to get these pages on the front page.
Hell I think that also works for them on Slashdot though it's much harder to get a new story posted. unless it's a dupe! hehe. - a7bat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Or you could use automatix or Klik to run Foxy.
- cduquette, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Linus is actually a Gnome user, and he went off on the Gnome devs for "dumbing everything down" and recommends people go to KDE because of that. He still uses Gnome though...
- bilangew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Im all for it. The thing ubuntu (or anything else) has to offer, though, is some way to automate chrooted installations (like setting up apache to be in a chroot jail, for example).
I know that once your system is setup to recieve updates this shouldnt be necessary, but why not? - ssam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2gnome-screensaver replaced xscreensaver. its quite simple to reinstall xscreensaver if you want.
not sure why anybody still uses screensavers though. - arizonagroove, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Can someone be more specific about how KDE sucks? People are talking about how the Gnome developers are removing options because they're 'too complicated' - that to me sounds like a reason why Gnome sucks. The general 'that's too complicated an option take it out' approach Gnome seems to be going towards just sounds like a very bad idea to me.
If KDE is so bad why does Linus Torvalds tell people to use it? (http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/12/13/1340215)
Sorry, this was supposed to be on the thread started by bayonetblaha - DiGiTaLFX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Has anyone noticed it says about a new commercial repository! Sounds interesting - good to see that people are learning that whilst open source is a nice idea, not everyone will actually change to this distribution method!
- veritech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2tried out the live version yesterday, got my drives all partitioned up, bring on 6.06!
- JayBachatero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I upgraded to Dapper on Saturday and haven't had any problems besides my sound card issue. It's not much of a Dapper issue cause I have an old ass sound card ;). I'm loving this release of Ubuntu. Muchhh faster also.
- skimitar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been running the beta now for a while with no show stoppers. The only thing that bugs me is that there have been three or so updates to Openoffice.org in the last week. One of them was only to correct a mis-labeled menu item. Unfortunately, though, this means updating the entire package at ~74Mb a time. Not too strenuous for me but I'd hate to be on a slower connection.
- pHr34kY, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6I don't care if I'm running unstable crap - as long as it's the LATEST unstable crap!
I've been running the beta for the last few months. I'm yet to come across a showstopper. I'm just glad that they fixed the problem (it's in breezy 5.10) where you would eject a flash memory disk, and it would say that it's unmounted before the cached data has finished writing... now there's a pretty progress dialog. I'm so happy :)
Be warned - I'm gonna make sure I'm the first to digg (and download) the actual release! I'll stay up all night if I have to! - nailbunny, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3i've had bad experiences with going over synaptic's head, and i avoid doing it now
whats automatix and klik? - brentcore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you hit the nail on the head dude, trying to decide which desktop to use from other people's comments is like buying a car without taking it out for a test drive first.
- lengau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just wondering - Which do you (ubuntu-using) guys prefer? Ubuntu, Kubuntu of Xubuntu? And Why?
- bayonetblaha, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I cannot find the screensaver controls ANYWHERE. Other than that, the betas have been great.
- nailbunny, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2kcontrol, appearance and themes
- FuManchu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Actually, I'd be surprised if Dapper went Final Release on June 1st.
It's currently in RC which will require a week of being open for bug reports and fixes. I have participated in a small way with the alpha debugging process of Dapper, and unless the RC is almost perfect, I'd say June 10 or so is more realistic.
I'm an Ubuntu fan, so I'm waiting eagerly. But this DesktopLinux.com article is not on the money, IMHO. - M4v3R, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5kubuntu-6.06-rc-desktop-i386.iso 666M Desktop CD for PC (Intel x86) computers
666 M - Scary. - FuManchu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah, well that page was:
"last edited 2006-04-21 10:24:18 by IanJackson"
I'm talking about as of now, 2006-05-29.
I'd _like_ it to be this week. I'm just saying I don't see it actually happening for another week, give or take a couple days. - ssam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1the target release date is 1st of June, but there is always a possiblilty of some disaster that would cause a delay.
i'd say a 90% chance that it will still be 1st of june somewhere in the world when dapper is released.
(though is you get a daily cd on the 31st it will probably be identical to the release) - ltmon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I give klik two thumbs up for running programs outside of the primary packaging system (i.e. synaptic). It's very easy to get the latest firefox.... just browse to "klik://firefox-latest" once installed.
- pHr34kY, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wanna know something scary? You were right:
http://www.zdnet.com.au/news/software/soa/Enterprise_level_Ubuntu_Linux_due_this_week/0,2000061733,39257454,00.htm
What's scarier is that it made the front page as well! - fanen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i would guess it's June 1st UTC ... i dunno whatever that means any way...
i like gnome because i started to prefer less customization options. KDE has quite a mass of those, that's wny people say it's complicated. (also for some strange reason, the bluish tint which KDE icons used to have in my fedora core 1 & 2 days didn't quite please me...)
but hey, give them both a go, and settle for the one you prefer... you won't get anywhere if you pay too much attention to other people's talks. - FuManchu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I was wrong!
Yeaaaaa!!!!!! - Haiyadragon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2More customizable then KDE? OMG Gnome has no options. But KDE sucks so this is a bad situation.
- miaow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i prefer gnome for the same reason someone mentioned above. its simple and not bloaty. KDE is a substitute for windows, and so seems to have a lot more features and pizzaz, but i find it just as bloated and slow as windows. It does seem to have more features pre-installed. Not sure I need them though. I also prefer the menu layout in gnome, whereas the KDE is similar to windows menu (default).
you can download ubuntu and instal KDE and fluxbox and change the interface for any session. - brentcore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1To be honest, I prefer Gnome because its snappier and there's something about KDE's default theme that just reminds of windows XP's fisherpriceyness. And I could care less about spending my time screwing around with the GUI using my l33t screensaver-changing skillz. Gnome is already beautiful out of the box, so I can spend more time doing what the OS is for: running apps.
- tmahmood, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I prefer GNOME. Its simple. KDE is too buggy.
and I'm waiting for 1st June. gonna try both of them(U&Ku). - bayonetblaha, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3actually, I like gnome very much... it seems more customizable than KDE, or maybe I just didn't spend enough time looking around KDE. Used to be there was a screensaver preferences in the menu under 'preferences', i'm sure that's how it was in 5.1
I'm just wanting to turn the darn thing off - gnomeuser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I have tried Ubuntu Dapper through out the development cycle and I'm deeply disappointed, they have taken no percautions to be able to support Dapper for 5 years. Ubuntu is a fine distro, I just don't agree with the fanboy statements that it's the best thing since sliced bread.
For your random desktop Dapper is probably fine (although looking at the amount of bugs I've processed lately there does seem to be quite serious issues), this however does not make it suitable for enterprise deployment which is the target for Dapper.
Business as usual will not work. - vh1`, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4you could always just download firefox, untar it and run it. and kde 3.5.2 has been in the kubuntu repos since ever.
I haven't tried the XGL stuff yet, but I can't wait! - rollerbob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2If you can't wait, you can update your /etc/apt/sources.list to use the dapper repositories, then:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
(this make take a few hours) -
