- kahrn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Then maybe you should go back to myspace, or wherever you came from. We don't want you here.
- lazyrussian, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Then do it. You won't regret it.
- cooppw02, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Don't let articles like this mislead you... Ubuntu (and Linux in general) doesn't need performance tweaks to be a good desktop OS. Ubuntu may "feel" slightly slower than a Windows install on the same machine, but it more than makes up for this in being far more stable when multitasking. For example, if you were to do anything highly processor- or disk-intensive in Windows on an older machine, you might as well step away from the machine until it's done, because it will often slow down to the point of becoming unusable.
In contrast, I can simultaneously do video encoding, burn a DVD, listen to music (without any skipping), and surf the web, all with everything feeling practically snappy on this 5 year old laptop. In fact, I've even stepped the CPU down from 1.1Ghz to 733 Mhz in order to keep the fan from ever coming on. - krinthekuz, on 09/16/2008, -3/+9sorry to abuse comment spots, but these lists of lists are getting lame regardless of the topic. just earlier today, a directory of css directories was frontpaged. if you're not submitting original content, don't submit it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Feisty is faster than Dapper (I skipped Edgy) and Firefox 2 is SO MUCH faster than Firefox 1.5
- vondur, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4How about this, set the machine to boot into runlevel 3. Then only use console based apps. That should speed it up. Also, this method is distro neutral!
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'll keep my Bitstream Vera thankyouverymuch
- Bossy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Great list and being a hardcore digger, I've seen almost all of those sites on Digg's frontpage.
- aule, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I have the exact opposite experience. Edgy was slow and crashtacular, after a fresh install of feisty, it's blazingly fast.
- rocket777, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4ssh long delay tip: fill in the hosts file with your local machine addresses to speed up logging in remotely.
- f4rrest, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Thanks for the list of tweak guides for ubuntu! Too bad it requires some time and attention to really dial it in... but it's like working a puzzle: can be satisfying in the end.
- rauldeandrade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I must disagree with you djlosch. True the original content has more value as News, but I've been looking a a resource like the css directory and that post saved me a lot of work, for which I'm thankful. Besides Digg is all about that. You don't like it, you don't have to digg it... I don't think there is need to ask someone not to submit.
- webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually, I find turning (via Prefs, Fonts) Smoothing to Subpixel and Hinting to None gives the best display on my laptop. Kind-of OSX-like.
And yes, Vera rocks. - Stemp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2«Linux is an OS»
Linux is a kernel ;) - motters, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Contrary to what this article says I have Ubuntu/WindowsXP dual boot both on a desktop and a laptop machine, and in both cases Ubuntu is noticeably faster than windows.
- jbohlinger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So many of these performancing things leave out what I consider to be one of the most important things - fonts.
This is a great tutorial to make fonts that will make your face melt with how amazing they are - http://www.solo-technology.com/blog/2006/06/09/smooth-fonts-for-ubuntu/ - ssam, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3a lot of these are rubbish.
some of them are fixes for bugs that only effect a few people (eg the disable ipv6, is a workaround for people with buggy routers)
some of them sacrifice stability (eg changing disk format)
you can do anything, tell someone its faster, and they think it 'feels' faster.
it is easy to be tricked by disk caching. try this
1) turn on the computer
2) open open office
3) close open office
4) sing the national anthem
5) open openoffice again (this time will be super fast) - weizbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone wonder why some of this stuff just inst there by default? I've seen so many tweaking and performance guides for Ubuntu on digg lately, and a lot of them mention some of the same stuff over and over again.... if it was this big of a deal, I don't see why some of the easier tweaks are not done after an install (obviously not all since they could be hardware specific).
As well, for anyone using Ubuntu who likes digging in deep into Linux and tweaking it for your machine, check out some other distros. Ubuntu is a great out-of-the-box distro that 'just works' pretty damn well, but the reason it works so well out of the box is due to a lot of things being left on by default (as you've seen from the tweaking guides).
Personally, I use Gentoo, which is great for crazy tweaking and getting Linux fine tuned to the hardware your using. If you've done the steps in these articles, it shouldn't be that bad to setup Gentoo as long as you can follow some instructions, which teach you a ton more about Linux if you wish to get a better idea of how it all is put together. - Gogogo111, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Fail.
- PaulRay, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Why is he being dugg down? He's excited to try something new... and he wants to get into the code... Is that wrong somehow?
- tippmann1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1edgy crashed on me alot, but was fast. Feisty on the other hand, is slower but hasn't crashed yet (other than kiba-dock, but that is pretty unstable)
- jumpfroggy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@djlosch
I agree, it gets tiring to click on an article, only to see that it's not really an article; either a link to yet another blog (and another, and another), or a list of other blogs that list other directories of content. - Lodarage, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3"Improve performance in Ubuntu OS using the techniques described in these guides."
Ubuntu is *not* an OS, but a GNU/Linux distribution. - thesquirrelwood, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2isn't a GNU/Linux distribution an OS?
- tippmann1, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6wtf happened to ubuntu? Edgy for me was blazing fast but when I upgraded to feisty it slowed down considerably. Don't get me wrong though because I love the new features and hardware support but you'd think they could have sped it up a little bit
- weizbox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0thesquirrelwood, Linux is an OS, a distro of it is not. Thats how I understand it at least, since a distro is merely just Linux with some tweaks/patches, and extra software(package management software, etc).
Check out this video that was dugg not too long ago: http://digg.com/linux_unix/Watch_Revolution_OS_History_of_GNU_Linux_1hr_25_mins - sogdian, on 10/12/2007, -15/+10Great list - makes me want to install ubuntu so I can tweak the performance.
- kickmydog, on 10/12/2007, -13/+2Ubuntu kicked my dog.
- slapded, on 10/12/2007, -34/+2digg needs more funny pictures and less boring stuff
