MythTV vs Windows Media Centre: is Linux still in with a chance?
,----[ Quote ]
| In terms of functionality, the machines were identical.
|
| MCE is beautiful to look at and use -- but if had the choice between a
| swankier interface and saving a few hundred dollars on the cost of the
| unit, I'd go for saving the money anyday.

Monolith Media Center brings MythTV to the technophobe

http://www.engadget.com/2006/08/16/monolith-media-center-brings-mythtv-to-the-technophobe - krinthekuz, on 09/16/2008, -0/+15i have mythtv, and have done multiple installs for multiple people. the breezy installation (hyam's method) is the most reliable, but it takes forever. the edgy installation on the ubuntu-wiki is VERY fast, but not as reliable. mythtv features destroy all other pvrs hands down. anyone who says the features are identical has no idea what they're talking about
mythtv has
-- automatic commercial skipping thats quite accurate (not so in WinMCE or tivo)
-- support for nearly any video codec (not so in WinMCE or tivo)
-- easy transfer/manipulation of recorded video via mythtv+samba (not as good in WinMCE or tivo, but available)
-- no DRM (WinMCE and tivo3 both limit via broadcast flags)
the music player in both mythtv and WinMCE suck so much, and tivo doesnt have it. the music players are so featureless (smart playlists are horrid compared to amarok and wmp) and slow to use/navigate. i personally use mpd+phpmp2 to handle music, as my laptop is always open in my apartment. - calvmari, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Buried because the document seems irrelevant. It's an article about the installation process, it doesn't really teach me anything about the media center that would convince me it's worthy any value.
The link to the Wiki at the end is broke too :( - aragon127, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Let's see, why not just install the regular Ubuntu, run automatix or easybuntu, sudo apt-get myth*, now you have a linux media center (or just install knoppmyth and be done with it). This distro is a complete waste. Does absolutely nothing.
- CRasH180, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14I am getting really tired of Windows. I believe I will replace my os with Linux. Ubuntu it is!
- tony134340, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14Christian Ubuntu, Edubunutu...
What's next...gaybuntu? Wait, no, they even have a distro for that. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"Since when is fglrx *****?"
Are you kidding me? - rockets, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11pornbuntu
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Oh yeah, Im liking this...
I'm building a multimedia center Linux box, and this may make it way easier.
I hope it supports my TV tuner, and dual monitor card. - ElBob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Okay, what exactly is the difference between this and the normal Ubuntu. The screenshots in that gallery look identical to the regular Ubuntu. I did see that it had a few codecs installed, but that's nothing you can't do with a bog standard Ubuntu installation.
- weiran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7It just seems they bundled VLC with it and a few other codecs... I don't see anything that warrants another distro?
- breakaway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Digg for long post and effort!
- dubbreak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Exactly. The "article" only shows installation.. woohoo, it looks the same as any other Ubuntu install.
- mabhatter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'd agree, from their screen shot tour, they didn't really ADD anything. They'd be better off making a package like EasyUbuntu or Automatix that you install from normal Ubuntu. There's not enough (any?) new stuff there to justify a whole CD download. Sorry guys.
- anjinash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Agreed. It's just a collection of screenshots from the LiveCD installation process. La-dee-friggin-da. How about some actual information on what sets this distro apart from its parent distro?
- linuxeventually, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4On all these "walk-throughs" why don't they show actually using the distro, not just installing it; especially when all the Ubuntu installs are the same -_- I for one want to know what makes it great, not just by reading a description but of actually playing music, and the features they list.
Scatch that, actually http://debianadmin.com/copper/displayimage.php?pos=-766 appears to be what I wanted.. - frankinla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3MCE is pretty slick... but if uMyth finds a way to support satellite, i'm in
btw... anybody able to get to the site? - ZippidyDoo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Will I have to install the fglrx *****
- 4answer2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Be nice if I could find a torrent of this
- streetstealth, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Oh... You know a Media Center Ubuntu is already Pornbuntu for you!
...Uboobtu? - narduk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4http://duggmirror.com/linux_unix/Ubuntu_Multimedia_Center_A_new_Ubuntu_based_Linux_distribution/
- thibeaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Uhmm I have no torrent available yet but will soon. As for downloading I am setting up a mirror and it should be ready very soon. and as for you tenement I really don't know why either about the timezone thing. Something just ubuntu added in their ubuiquety installer
- z00k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3And its out of here... at 92 diggs =/
Edit... seems to just be going slow... very very slow. - Gauthic, on 07/09/2008, -1/+3I know this is offtopic, but it's a pet peeve and brought about by the installation screenshot.
Why oh why do some/most linux distributions still make you choose a city instead of ask for your time zone? Can't I at least have the option to choose a time zone instead of trying to click on Chicago (the easiest to hit in the Central Time Zone) on their little map?
It just seems more of a pain to mouse over until I find the city (and the drop-down's still not great) than to just choose "Central Time Zone, USA, -6 GMT" - Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'd like to see a custom Ubuntu distro for professional clowns called Clownbuntu.
All it has to be really is Ubuntu that ships with a default desktop background of Bozo.
Someone make it happen. - sparkrainfir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2where is the 10ft interface? i was hoping for at least mythtv preloaded, or something...
- johnstar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1mint linux is more media center than this, not much has changed. I should release my own hacked up eft, all codecs including rarewarez ape and vqf, dvd playback , riping tools, and a cool skull 'n' crossbones default wallpaper
- saftaplan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Windows does that too. It's easier than thinking about Daylight Savings Time and such. BTW, thank God for the world map in ubuntu, it's a hell scrolling that list in Windows during installation.
- JasonKiddy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5MSubuntu
- mfearby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I might release a distro called WallpaperUbuntu which just has a bunch of extra wallpapers added. Seems like any and every silly idea gets its own distribution these days. Why not just wait for Canonical to incorporate this kind of functionality in 7.04 or just install the frigging codecs yourself, I wonder?
- gianttacommk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yes, remotes are supported with LIRC.
http://www.lirc.org/ - narduk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Can I use my Hauppauge remote?
- thibeaz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Sorry about my site. I am trying to get a mirror setup and no sparkrainfir Mythtv is not preloaded that's going to be RC2 of Ubuntu Multimedia Center. and yes I am Zach Thibeau. The person responsible for Ubuntu Multimedia Center. Sourceforge rejected my application so if there is anyone out there that can help me set up a mirror that would be great
- thibeaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ubuntummc.com is now up and running and forums will be open very soon Download link active and everything
- thibeaz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I forgot to mention that this RC1 is actually a proof-of-concept that this can work. The first stage was to see if people are ready for a step by introducing something small like the multimedia codecs. Eventually I'll be bringing out the big toys to the mix. I would like your suggestions for what I should add to the mix. email me at thibeaz[at]gmail[dot]com
- jonnyforest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The original download site is down (bandwidth exceeded). Anybody know where to find a torrent?
- meltingrobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@djlosch
I know exactly what you are saying. I wish Mythtv would just somehow open Amarok for music instead of its own thing. I have a massive music collection and it takes forever to update the library. Of course, that was several versions back, it may be different now. I plan on re-tasking my Intel Mac Mini for that very purpose soon. - immrlizard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Take a look at mysettopbox.tv. If you aren't using sata drives there is a knoppix version that has most of the problems fixed and you can do an automatic install. If you do use sata drives you have to do the standard install. It isn't difficult either way. I am hoping to get the rest of my parts today and start my setup when I get home. Look for the R5D1 release. There are complete instructions on the site. I installed it on a test machine and got it working. Now hoping to do the same with good parts.
- prototypeangel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1whee. this is just what I'm looking for.
thanks a lot @firstlinuxuser - gclef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The open "ati" drivers are making fglrx unnecessary in many cases. I found with Edgy that I could get DMI working with the "ati" drivers where fglrx would refuse to enable it (radeon 9100 IGP cards specifically get DMI disabled by the fglrx driver at initialization).
So, no, you don't need fglrx in edgy. In fact, I'd recommend at least trying the "ati" driver first. - drumhell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2There is a similar version that you can download called Linux Mint (Ubuntu Based).
It's here: http://linuxmint.com/download.html - fishdan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I am starting to think that this may be a hoax. It's impossible to download, it's been ample time for them to find a mirror. And so on. I'm sure others have ideas as to why this might be a hoax
- saftaplan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Why the hell must it have such an ugly Windows-like theme :-S
- z00k, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Scratch that, the main site is gone (Bandwidth exceeded)
- bshensky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
I've got LIRC controlling my satellite box via a homebrew IR blaster. Of course, the only downside is that the channel often changes while we're watching something. But it is rock-solid reliable. I just wish the MythTV music player didn't suck @$$. - hopey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1VDR is best multimedia center:
