Please, no "i" craze for the Linux community, I beg of you. - sirhomer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Sounds like a type of phone I'd buy. Add some desktop->phone sync software to Ubuntu and you got a nice package.
- shiftt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21THANK YOU. Anything but that bloated freezing Windows Mobile crap. I'd love to wipe out the Windows Mobile crap from my Axim pda and put ubuntu on it.
Definitely gonna look forward to this release. - Spr0k3t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16/me waits for RandaII's dumb ass comments about how "ubuntu fsking suxxorz"
- specialK16, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Dugg because your comment came right after sp0k3t's. Man, you are predictabe.
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Debian is currently the most popular distro among embedded Linux designers. Let's see if Canonical steals Debian's thunder in that area as well. How about clusters?
- strangewill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Usually the best time to invest, stocks are the absolute lowest, potential at the highest. It's how fortunes are made.
- coredump0x01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12The trolling force is strong in that one.
- strangewill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Ugh. No deleting comments. :(
- Spr0k3t, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Wow, that didn't take long. You're just predictable... get over it.
- Forge42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Reminds me of the openmoko project, which is significantly ahead of this one, I believe:
http://www.openmoko.com/press/index.html - BHSPitMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Announcing: The Motorola BNTU.
- crazybrit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Except they're not even making a profit yet.
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Please, no "i" craze for the Linux community, I beg of you.
Linux has had the G-craze and the K-craze long before there was the first Apple iProduct (iMac) started the i-craze. All three crazes drive me bonkers too, but not enough to stop me from using Gedit, K3B and my iPod. - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Open Moko was more about generating the hardware needed and the library tools, this is a distribution of software built on those tools. The two projects are complementary.
- specialK16, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Think about this: Open Source Hardware, like the Open Mp3 Player + Open Source Software. I see a bright future!
- DrDabbles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5WTF? All your stories are about Linux, yet you bash Linux users? I don't get it.
- smartalecks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@geminitojanus:
I don't think that a console or a text editing program need creative names in the first place :/ - sneakerelph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5a *****-cult? WHERE DO I SIGN UP!?
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Sadly, Ubuntu doesn't support the ARM or PPC/Dragonball* processor in your Palm/typical-handheld device. Intel's getting with Canonical now to have software ready for their MID devices, which Microsoft has failed to promote.
Moral of the story: if one company can't do it, move to the next.
(sadly, they DID support PPC in the past, seems to be backward movement). - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4http://palmtelinux.sourceforge.net/
If it's a sensible architecture, it's got a Linux port. Hell, even if it ISNT a sensible architecture, someone's probably got a port running somewhere... - PhirePhly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You would have to jump on right away though, because all of us will be buying their stock like mad for street cred and no other good reason (see GOOG)
- Aninhumer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Well Gnome and XFCE both use GTK so I doubt there will be Xubuntu equivalent, but they could build something with Qtopia for Kubuntu.
- strangewill, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@geminitojanus:
It's a little different, though yeah I agree still kind of uncreative names.
Konsole only comes with KDE though right? So that kind of makes sense. - Sairgem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Konsole only comes with KDE though right? So that kind of makes sense."
Add to that every other KDE program just HAS to start with a K, or at the very least have a capital K in the middle of the name. - DrDabbles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Having put together an "embedded" distro myself, and maintained it on security devices for several years, I can appreciate the difficulty this poses. Maintaining two projects with even a few parallel features is difficult. But, hearing that Intel is becoming more and more involved in the community is excellent. That's the kind of vendor help we could all benefit from.
- daverave999, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6They are taking over the World! Seriously though, I'm keeping my eye on this one.
Can I get shares in Canonical yet? - Skeithy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I wonder if all three buntus will have a mobile and embedded edition or just Ubuntu since Gnome is starting their own embedded project. I'm a fan of KDE so I hope it has a showing as well. Another thing I'm hoping is for the power saving features these editions will have to have to eventually trickle down to the desktop Ubuntu to help laptop users.
I think its awesome that Canonical is trying to provide alternatives for everything the other guy sells. - BHSPitMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's like all this semi-relevant blog spam lately is the new "Ads by Google" knock-off.
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ubuntu unofficially has PowerPC installers on their ports pages, including an ISO for the PlayStation 3:
Plus you can always use Debian, which officially supports PPC along with about 8 other architectures. - Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I guess this applies to new products only. So no Ubuntu for legacy Axims, Tungstens, iPaqs or Jornadas, I suppose.
- thomas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Baaaaah! (looks sheepish)
- nayr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1most modern palms don't have serial access, though, so installing a new OS would be practically impossible without cracking it open.
- Forge42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@rulezgetbent:
You have a non-smart phone that can do GPS? You have a non-smart phone that the community can develop software for? You have a non-smart phone with a touchscreen and an appropriate GUI? Where can I get one of those??? /sarcasm
In reality, this Ubuntu project and the OpenMoko project are pretty much the same thing, with the primary difference being that the OpenMoko project already has a device in alpha. They may ultimately compete (or perhaps merge) with one another... but OpenMoko is a Linux based smart-phone OS, much like the proposed Ubuntu project. - Slipknotic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3But will it replace the OS on my ***** palm?
- netsui, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1*crosses fingers for iPAQ version*
- Kr4t05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I swear to god, I was brainstorming this very idea two days ago.
"What if they made a version of Ubuntu for mobiles and smartphones?"
I called this thing in my brain "µbuntu - Linux for tiny stuff."
Maybe Canonical will use my name. :P - walnoj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wish I could install whatever they're going to create on my mobile phone and overwrite the existing OS. Oh well. I can dream.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd like to see what new tools and UI they can make for tablet pcs
- FelixSchmelix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder if this project will work together with the already existing Maemo project (www.maemo.org), the Debian based distribution that powers the Nokia n770 and n800...
- strangewill, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3"Can I get shares in Canonical yet?"
Seconded. :P - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Embedded edition means that you could install it to a UBS flash drive as well!! I would LOVE to replace the PalmOS on my Tungsten T2 with Ubuntu!! That would ROCK!
- wayne247, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@brian.honaker
Linux on the Tungsten? Forget that. The platform is entirely different and there's no way Linux could run on that. If you want a PDA linux, there's OpenZaurus (now Angstrom) that runs on Sharp Zaurus, the Nokia 770 tablet and some iPaqs. - Goldenboss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0May be nice.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2ubuntu PSP ne one?
- rulezgetbent, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1@Forge42
The OpenMoko software looks limited, and doesnt seem to do anything more than my non-smart phone can do. Ubuntu will blow OpenMoko out of the water. - Aninhumer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Ubuntu *could* support ARM or PPC they just need to port stuff, and if they're building a mobile platform they'd be foolish not to support ARM.
- Paranoidmarvin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1mmmm, chocolate Ubuntu phone
