http://www.ubuntuguide.org - SEMW, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Parent's right. Linux Is Not Windows; and the sooner people stop trying to remould it as a free, open-source version of Windows and start to appreciate it for what it *is* -- it's own being, with seperate strengths and weaknesses from Windows -- , the better off we'll all be; including (actually, especially) the Linux & FOSS movement.
See http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm - Geaugan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10The links provided give the impression that a lot of people using Ubuntu should probably just stick to Windows. Why would everything have to emulate windows for someone?
- strabes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Most of this stuff is on www.ubuntuguide.org
- killerofkiller, on 10/12/2007, -10/+14no need to have Ubuntu in the title. People here treat Ubuntu as its own "special" OS...
I admit, it's a damn good flavor of linux ( I use it 100%) but it doesnt need all the special attention. - schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10It is a series of links. There is similar type of documentation in the Ubuntu Web site, even Wikipedia. But still... it's a good starting point, I suppose, regardless of what /else/ is available.

"they just think of it is "The computer"
YES! Exactly!
All the semi-techies in here tend to forget that most computer users do not know what exactly windows is except something to do with their computer which by the way consist of a monitor and a "harddisk" inside which resides 'files' (ie word-files) and internet - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2'no need to have Ubuntu in the title. People here treat Ubuntu as its own "special" OS...'
That's exactly what Ubuntu needs to be if it's to take of as a popular desktop OS - Most people (particularly the target of an "easy-to-use" distro like Ubuntu) don't care if it's really "A Debian-derived Linux-kernel-based POSIX etcetc OS"
Most people who use Windows XP/OS X don't think that it's a [fancy description of the innder workings XP/OS X], they just think of it is "The computer".. - nick0909, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No kidding, this is something I am really looking forward to, and I think it could really catch on, if it actually does what it says it will. I have a few indie music friends that are quite happy about the idea of ditching "the man" and using linux to record and mix their music.
- julieBi, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1If you have any ubuntu questions this is the spot for you:

Nope: Ubuntu is going mainstream, Ubuntu is moving towards the masses. The Linux comunity (some of it) standing on its high ground seeing the Ubuntu ship sailing away with all the customers. Of course, this will create a feeling of being left behind. But that is probably misunderstood. It also makes it harder feeling special.
Think Apple - what is it that makes it possible for Apple to sell a normal computer at 15%-25% premium? Apple users are special - And the know it!
Why would a geek spend days making his machine do what a windows user can do in minutes? It makes him feel special, and his friends will applaud him for his achievement.
Ubuntu is taking 'special' and 'niche' out of Linux instead they are putting 'easy' and 'fun' into it - you recognize those phrases? ;D - jasmin888, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@vwgtiturbo
I don't blame you but ***** happens sometimes and a lot of other diggers just happen to find it quite useful.
I'd say Ubuntu is the poor man's mac or the opensource windows HA HA HA.
As I'm trying to point out here any _normal_ user does not care one bit about the os (the don't know what it is) they want their computer to do what computers do.
And it appears that soon Ubuntu will be able to achieve that - a no-hassle turn-on :D - jasmin888, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@sniggitybiggity
Is anything significant going on, on digg anyway?
Yeah, yeah I know - the occasional 'rage of the bloggers' that help a pure mac owner getting his faulty mouse cord replaced thus saving democracy and the world as we know it.
But apart from that!!!!????
digg is an insignificant talking shop for would be techies - nice and comfortable - jasmin888, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would disagree wiht this constant statement: Windows == professional && linux == amateur
Most of the internet runs on linux
The fact is that miscrosoft lost the battle for the professional server market to linux, bsd and others. Ms lost the batlte for the professional mobile phone market big time. They've lost the battle for pda market (the may come back with windows mobile 6), They've lost the battle for the embedded market to linux. So the only market they're dominating is the desktop. In this market they are loosing small but significant shares (significant because once lost they don't come back).
What appears to be happening is that Ubuntu aspires to the 'windows' of the linux distros - that easy-to-use, standardized, ubiquitous, recognizable (ie instant usable) to grandma.
What this would mean is that Ubuntu will be the entry-level distro (a 'linux home'). Most of what you learn on Ubuntu will be transferrable to other distros if need should arise. In short we are seeing a new food chain being created with ubuntu at the bottom - eating up new users, passing some of them on to other more specialized distros - so to speak :D - Philluminati, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
I think it's kind of disrespectful that Ubuntu distances itself from Linux. And whilst I want more people on Linux and I like that. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1no doubt, ubuntu is one of the ***** distro's there is
it's even brown like a turd in appearance
and when the ***** did these apps become Ubuntu apps
ah yes the moment idiots started trying to be cool and stick it to the man
CentOS > Ubuntu
P.S. When you say Ubuntu is your favorite distro, you're telling other users
that you really don't know what the ***** you're doing and are a Linux N00b - bmartin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@hpfilter: People don't normally say "My computer is a Gigabyte/AMD PC". They mention what "drives" the system... the thing that interprets what things mean and does the lower-level work. If you're going to be a term-Nazi, you might as well call it GNU/X.org/Linux. Keeping it shorter makes the term easier to pronounce correctly and memorize. Most people who know Linux is a kernel attribute the core libraries and applications to GNU, while most people who don't know a thing about Linux couldn't care less. Stallman's ego has been stroked enough.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't think you should use terminology if you're not prepared to use it correctly.
Calling GNU/Linux applications Ubuntu applications would be like Microsoft prepending it's
name to other vendor's software asshat.
You think Microsoft Adobe Photoshop sounds wrong. If so you're correct.
Sample principle applies here. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah this site is about as lame as a linux for dummies book
all these posts about boo hoo dell won't support linux (cringe)
and
ubuntu made my grandma's teeth grow back !!!! (she gave better head without them)
it's amazing how anyone with half a clue could take anything posted here as anything more than the crap spew that it is - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ubuntu tards ruin digg with lame posts
- brandg, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5@semw
And the closer Linux gets to looking like Windows, the more people will come to associate it as a professional Operating System, instead of a geek hobbyist OS. I mean, with a list like this, we're talking about desktop adoption, not server use.
The sad fact is that, for casual use, most computer users have used Windows exclusively. The idea of fundamentally changing their worldview is fraught with peril, and they need a pretty big reason to switch. That choice is going to be based on two factors. 1) Windows militant rights lockdowns and horrific security issues, or 2) the ease of Linux adoption, without danger of data loss or weekends pouring through MAN files just to watch their DVDs.
So, if we really want universal adoption, we cannot change Microsoft, but we can change Linux. Fashioning it after the world's most popular Operating System might not be a bad way to win people over, instead of making them feel stupid because they don't want to learn a whole new OS. - hpfilter, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1And I thought it was GNU/Linux. Guess i was wrong
- dualaudi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2you know... more and more i'm finding sites with just links... but I find some of them useful, if i just want to digg or bookmark one site that has all the sources i need..
This site is one of them. Others (not so much) - vwgtiturbo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Wow, I sure am sick of seeing Ubuntu ***** on digg.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1nice story.....liked it
- lacreme, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2No.

What is Digg?
