- chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"Why exactly should I stop using Windows XP and use this?"
I have each and every one of my clients answer this question. If they can't - they stick with XP (after trying Knoppix and/or Ubuntu Live).
Some have the answer. Others don't.
Being mostly imune to virus and spyware, and having a system with a more intelligent (actually managable) limited user system is only part of it.
For me, it is that no matter where I decide to go - I can go as far as I want. I don't waste time customizing, but the few tweaks that I do apply would be impossible in Windows. In addition - by far the biggest seller for me is the command line. Until Monad arives, I have to have Linux.
For everyone it is diffirent. For some it is the almost unlimited customization, from chosing your windows manager, all the way down to various tweaks. Recompile everything to sqeeze every ounce of perfromance out of your hardware? Not for me - but for some people that is important, and they love it.
Managing hundreds of boxes day in and day out - and not go home every day with a migrane? Yeah, that is important to some.
For those running a system that *must* be stable and not be restarted at all - servers for example, might chose Linux (or BSD or another *nix) because it is important to them.
For my mother - it was that she couldn't hurt anything. She can't delete any important system files, she can surf and play on the net, she can do anything she wants - and it is all there. One simple install and the OS AND all the applications are there. Ubuntu, and Automatix = a hell of a lot quicker and easier than setting up XP with simular capabilities (all codecs, all the software, etc). She also likes the extra security Linux provides (and yes, I understand it isn't bulletproof - I gave her a router for NAT).
If you can't answer the question - stick with XP until you can. For me, I have to have both. Windows for Oblivion - Linux for everything else. - batfink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This OS shows just how good Linux can be. If you are looking for an OS for web browsing/e-mailing/word processing etc then this is as good as... if not better than XP.
For games OTOH... its junk - debian_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"cant wait to test xgl in vmware.. hrhr!"
You can't. Xgl depends on an OpenGL capable graphics card (the newer the better, of course copiz still works on older cards that wouldn't get withing 100 miles of Vista's requirements). The point is all the graphics card driven eyecandy really isn't possible under VMware since its emulated graphics device is meant for generic stuff. - noamsml, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's still alpha. As a normal user, I wouldn't touch it. Stay with your stable distros at least until the beta release.
- chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh, and one more thing.
Some can't run XP. Either they can't afford the cost of the OS (which is actually quite a bit of money to some - including myself) or they can't afford the hardware to run it.
You can take almost any system - a system that won't run Windows 98 or Windows 2000 well, and get a modern Linux system to run great on it. Granted you won't be using Gnome or KDE, but there are dozens of great windows managers that are perfect and work great on old systems.
XP is good. There are many things that it lacks. Many modern Linux distro's have much of those things it lacks. If anyone finds themselves wanting or needing those things XP lacks - they find themselves wanting or needing Linux. It is actually quite simple. - TheAttacks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good find, only 2 more months until the april release of Dapper Drake, then we have to wait another 6 for a new version :(
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No huge changes really.. But I've not tried it out for ages, and I never got around to trying out Kubuntu, so I'll try them in VMWare..
- Ben - spoetnik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To bad the download server can't handle the load..
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/dapper/flight-4/ is down at the moment - Ultim8Fury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0inclusion of XGL and Compiz is good.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The torrent could use more seeds with beefy upload...
- asraniel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you never played nexuiz with it, open source games work great with kubuntu (or ubuntu if you prefer gnome)
- FreyrVanir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0guyhersh
I wouldn't call that manuel installing them. Manuel installing would be going to a website and grabing a deb then installing it.

w32codecs comes with a lot of codecs that windows does not have installed unless you download other programs. Real audio/video, Apple audio/video, ogg, mkv, etc. - spoetnik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0any direct links to torrents for the ppc version?? I want to try this on my iBook
- xodex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0awesome :D
- echobucket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man, I can't even get the .torrent files. Could someone put up a mirror of them?

I have a mobility x700 and i _know_ it works (just give it a try).
There are some things you have to do though, i dont believe you will get a GUI on boot but you can get there. Mainly if i remember you need to ...
1) install fglrx (from repositories or the ati site)
2) re-do the xorg.conf and i remember changing somehting to like LVDS, LVDS (MonitorLayout maybe?) - so yea, if you still need help just get in touch with me :) nitin@code0.org - Killgore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A lot of important and not so important improvements. I like the power management, that will be handy by the time i install this on my laptop.
- bumbershoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Fedora Core 5 will be out in the middle of March, and it's very similar to Ubuntu. Both distro's are Gnome by default, though Fedora (like Kubuntu) ships with a complete KDE desktop.
Ubuntu, Open SuSE and Fedora are very complete Linux desktop solutions. The desktop is getting exciting again. Microsoft has some able competition finally (not the least of which is OS X).
I love choices. - RacerX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hey trumpi, try changing the nvidia adapter to "vesa" from "nv" in xorg.conf. That should get you into the gui.
- enovakrss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0verucasalt: you're right, but gnome 2.14 will have group policy - like features. But wehere would you know that?
---------
There's a thing that all ms-fanbois misunderstand. Real linux-users don't want to assure anybody to use linux.
Who WOULDN'T like to use linux, should go away, we will be fine without you. - macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is a helluva wondering thing to wake up to on a Sunday, fresh coffee and awesome Ubuntu news.
thank you devs - - binarymelon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@Enter: You will need to update your /etc/apt/sources.list file. It is usually just a simple change of replacing dapper for any occurrence of breezy. But I would definitely go to www.ubuntuforums.org and post in the dapper section if you're looking for help. I'd wait until Dapper is closer to final, the alpha releases usually have some issues when doing an automatic upgrade.

Actually, my old Sun Ultra5 (won't run Win98/2k) with its paltry CPU runs both Gnome and KDE pretty well. The trick is turning lots of eye-candy off. - anti-net, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0woo woo
- zootm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Hell, BeOS had multimedia support, and that was "free" (OSS be damned)"
BeOS costed money, every time I looked at it.
The problem with giving away decoders etc. is that they cost money on a per-licence (typically) basis. It's just not a legal possibility. If you're willing to pay a couple of quid for a distribution, I'm sure you'd be able to find some company willing to sell you the licences.
The DVD ones are particularly bad for this, in the US in particular. No such thing as a free lunch and all that. - jbus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0guyhersh,
Yes you need fglrx... Also be sure to remove the regular composite extensions in xorg.conf if you use them before installing. - GuyHersh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For you all that installed XGL and have an ATi card. Did you have to install ATI's Proprietary fglrx driver first to get it to work?
The gay part is that ATi doesnt support the X850xt in the proprietary linux drivers, even though release notes say so. I read many linux website and they say the drivers do not work with the x850xt.
But I couldn't get Xgl to work with the generic ati drivers included with xorg. - jbus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Installed on one of my desktops to try out Xgl and compiz.
It's is amazing and very stable! - quietglow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Holy Crap. I've been an Ubuntu user for just under a year and have always been amazed at what these people have been doing. This buries it all though: XGL and Compiz are astounding. And don't believe the hype: they're pretty solid too.
- GuyHersh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0jbus
Yah when I installed the fglrx drivers for my x850xt, X wouldn't boot, said no screens detected. So I thought it was because the generic extentions were in the xorg.conf file. So i went into the VI editor and deleted all the generic (composite) extentions, and tried reloading gdm. No go. And I'm pretty sure its because the x850 isn't supported by fglrx.
But now i'm installing ubuntu on my laptop which has a mobility x700, which supposedly works, so I'm giving that a shot in the mean time.

Just another reason free OS' will never make it on the desktop.
I'll take OS X, or even Windows any day.
Hell, BeOS had multimedia support, and that was "free" (OSS be damned) - mikm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bah. apt-get dist-upgrade is taking forever.
- moebis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Been using Ubuntu for several months, got heavily involved in the compiz testing these past weeks... and this statement from the release is not far from the truth:
"The effects rival and in many cases exceed what Mac OS X and Windows Vista are capable of."
Been a redhat and fedora user for many years, but what really got me into Ubuntu was the community, you would be hard pressed to find a better community willing to help all levels of users. The solid part of the system comes from it's debian roots. - zootm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just managed to get Compiz and XGL running with no trouble at all. Awesome stuff.
The other updates are great also, but that was what I really wanted to get sorted. Strange that they're not carrying one of the Gaim betas, I guess they don't think it'll make it to a final version in time. - TheAttacks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0spoetnik wrote:
"To bad the download server can't handle the load.."
It's not a good idea to download and install it unless you're looking to bug test it for them. Maybe a later beta version would be safe to install, but the alphas are all unstable. - GuyHersh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0diggman, do you under stand the legal/licensing issues of WHY they can't release mp3 and dvd codecs?
Its a FREE os, and .... nevermind i'm not going to go into it.
Basically Free OS = no MP3 or DVD codecs, you have to install em manually, end of story. Let alone his is an incremental build.
I think its the same way with free video encoding programs like videora or something else, cant remember, but I had to download the dll's seperately. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0freyrvanir:
Yes, I know you CAN do that, but one shouldn't HAVE to. - FreyrVanir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0diggmann I know your the local anti-linux troll but it's easy to get that stuff to work. Just add this mirror in Synaptic.

Wait for the real 6.04. There'll be enough bugs in that to play with, I'm certain. - chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"guyhersh:

Actually, since you are willing to PAY for the OS, there are Linux distro's who offer a free and non-free versions. You have to pay for the non-free versions, but the non-free comes with much of that stuff already installed and configured. Further, if you wanted to be somewhat ironic - you could pirate Linux (the non-free version) and go that route.
Not saying that Linux will ever (or should for that matter) go mainstream, but this part of your argument is moot.
Further, if the first time you loaded such a non-playable video, the player said "Hey, you need this codec/decoder. Click OK to download". Would that satisfy you? If no - then even Windows fails.
And moreover - I have to install dozens of codecs in Windows (or a pack) to get it to play everything I want it to play. It was much easier (for me anyway) to get my Ubuntu all set up than it was for me to set up Windows. Granted both are very easy - I just found Ubuntu easier. Your millage may vary. - quietglow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For those looking for the complete dapper flight 4, I got ~300k d/l using the torrents on the site. Central US.
- krazykit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I updated last night, and a lot of stuff was completely broken. My laptop was unusable. Luckily, I backed up before doing so, and am currently re-imaging my hard drive.
- GuyHersh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mikm, yes, the upgrade is taking forever, only going between 30-50k/s.
/me regrets posting this on digg.
ALSO, just to piss me off more, the ati drivers that come with xorg, doesnt work on my mobility x700, freaking retarted..
