They've earned my respect. But I have to agree that the graphics seem to be overdone. A little subtlety goes a long way. - Toshibi, on 10/11/2007, -2/+23You know, I used to be an Automatix fan, but since 7.04 who needs it? With a little patience it's not hard to get your system working without it.

http://fullcirclemagazine.org/download-manager.php?id=1 - theonedigg, on 10/15/2007, -3/+18Guys/Girls,
This is a volunteer project by folks that actually put their time and effort into something they believe in. Instead of tearing them down, you could do (3) things:
1) Publishing and Graphics Gurus: Offer your time instead of your "I-can-do-this-better-than-you-can" attitude.
2) Layout Gurus: Develop a layout and send it over to fullcircle. Put your time/effort where your big-mouth is; it'll benefit not only the readers here, but the audience for the mag.
or
3) Drop Digg and walk away. If you don't have anything positive to say, STFU sometimes. From the ground up projects are hard enough without people like you *hating*. Stop the judging and start the contribution. It'll make you feel a lot better.
Off the soapbox now, but geez, I feel so sorry for people with negative attitudes... and if you're trying to be constructive, do it in a positive way. Don't be a moron. - lcampagn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Interesting, but somebody with writing experience should volunteer to edit the next issue before it comes out.
- arbulus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Wrong place man.
- clawoo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12The download site seems to get a pretty serious hammering and it may go down soon. If it does go down feel free to use this mirror: http://clau.sparetimegroup.net/fullcircle/fullcircle-issue01-english.pdf
Plenty of bandwidth. - dilibau, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10rofl...that is funny and diplomatic way of saying you didn't like it...:)
- zenwhen, on 10/11/2007, -6/+14Great first issue!
- glinsvad, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8So true. Conversely, if that does not happen, I will volunteer not to read the next issue...
- Szandor, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9"Digg me down if you agree."
No, I'm digging you down because you're a douche. - alfadaemon, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8It is a great initiative, I do have to say that the art needs a little work.
- NikoKun, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Neat! Wouldn't it be cool if they became a real magazine someday, I mean one that gets mailed to you... not just a PDF... lol
I'm actually gonna forward this to my parents... my mom has taken a liking to Ubuntu ever since I helped her switch over to it, from her windows xp full of adware and popups... Besides she might find this interesting, and hopefully learn something about how it works... ^_^; - omarciddo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5(If I'm not mistaken) I think the magazine itself is open source, so hopefully that'll take care of itself soon.
- maninalift, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Clunky design:
Either learn LaTeX for a classic well-formatted document or find someone with a talent for design.
All those boxes in different shades of yellow/cream/brown at different distances from each other... oh the horror. I started messing with my gamma to get it to look decent, managed to improve it a little but at the expense of making some of the text unreadable. - matriculated, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I love the idea of this but the execution leaves much to be desired The design suffers from box-itis - there's way to many boxes within boxes. If you use the installation screen for your cover (which is not the greatest idea) why not replace the text with article headlines? Scaling your type instead of using a condensed typeface - a basic typographical no no. I could go on but I don't want to appear more like the jerk that I am.
Also, I'm wondering why this is a pdf and not just web pages? - mrmonday1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3A few things for all of you... Images are actually full size... If you zoom in, you will see them in full quality. All of you commenting on design, there is a meeting tomorrow (Sat 9th 4UTC - See site) which you can discuss design in. It will be on #fullcirclemagazine on chat.freenode.net, or http://irc.fullcirclemagazine.org.
Hope this is useful to you all. - binaryspiral, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3So, even though there may be useful information, you didn't bother to continue... a choice you made based solely on the quality of layout.
Let me ask you then, why the ***** are you here? - SweetyCheeks, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4New content??? Where you been??? :-) :-)
- SweetyCheeks, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6Got a copy off the mirror (thanks to clawoo). Everyone can digg me down but... I found much of the info VERY old, the fonts were terrible and pixelated and the graphics really could use professional work. The How To's were a nice idea, but How To's are very competitive - There are far superior ones on line. The "My Story" section had no value. My opinion (and I know you're all going to digg me down) :-)
Effort = 10
Idea = 10
Creativity = 5
Valuable/Current Content = 4
Professional layout = 3
Graphics' Quality = 2 - mattmcm, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Harsh judgement is perhaps the best feedback you could want. Why? You can find out exactly what you've been doing wrong and fix it for the next issue.
- humperdeath, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Predictably, as soon as the word UBUNTU appears on Digg, the site goes down. Maybe later tonight it will have recovered. I'll check back later- or find a mirror site. Thanks though!
- Ubersmush, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I was thinking of installing ubuntu and the guide in the magazine makes it seem easy but I'm not very technically minded so i need to ask a few questions first.
Will it format my hard drive?
When it's installed will it boot from windows or from when I turn my pc on?
Great magazine by the way! Really enjoyed reading it - leszek, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Yep, no need for automatix, all you need is here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu - grickaby, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4I've been using Ubuntu for almost a month at home, love it...enjoyed this magazine. Answered a few questions and it really speaks volumes about the open-source community...for the people, by the people.
- nobullmouth, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2This magazine was great, it definately took my curiousity over the edge and I immediately downloaded UBUNTU and created a CD, which was really well done, it does all the work for you. Then I booted to the CD and played around with the UBUNTU interface. I have to say I am very impressed with how many great opensource applications it comes with preinstalled. You get graphic editors, sound, movie, games, word processors, etc. It was simple to connect to my wireless network and I was online instantly with Firefox. Now, since I already have and paid for Windows Vista, I am struggling to find any reason to really do a full install or switch, however, for those looking to save hundreds of dollars, or buying a new computer, this looks like a great option. I would love to see some more gui interfaces with adding software and viewing hardware, again, with only using the CD I don't know how much of the true interface I could see. It seemed awkward to find my C: and files as well as the search features for files seemed a little awkward with no drive names; again this could just be the CD version. Overall I would say it is very solid.
- CircleFusion, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The design seems like a cross between a flyer layout and a website. It does not look like a magazine design layout to me, for the most part. There are good reasons to choose a design more similar to a magazine.
The things that make it appear like a website are a running header between pages (magazines don't use that, websites do), or basically major design elements that carry from one page to the next. If you pick up any magazine, the pages throughout the magazine vary in design. Some of them have "frame" colors, and some don't. Usually, every page does not use an identical layout. That keeps the magazine interesting looking.
It's also like a website where it uses little thumbnails for things. On a website, you could click on those and you might see a larger version. In a magazine, you have to find a compromise on the right image size that works. This magazine is in digital form. Go ahead and use the space to show large images of the interfaces.
It's similar to a flyer because the text is very large, which is meant to be read at more of a distance. Take a common magazine and put it next to a printout of this ubuntu magazine. You will start to notice major differences.
The content seems pretty good. I like the topics covered, especially things like an overview of the directory stucture. I would only suggest more of a mix of beginner and advanced topics, or it will end up as just one big beginner's manual.
If the same content were placed in a more appropriate design, it could be very impressive. Someone said this was open source. Does that source include larger images than the ones shown in the PDF? I might be interested in redesigning it just to see what I come up with. - Mejogid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2*nix doesn't use dirver letters, everything is mounted on the '/' filesystem in a directory, including harddrives, procesors, cryptographic interfaces and a random number generator. It's a much more powerful system, and allows you to mix and match between harddrives and partitions for different directories etc. easily.
As for reasons to switch - better performance (on the installed version), no forced upgrade path, a community, compiz (google it), tonnes of themes, no (in the wild) viruses and a fun and educational learning experience. It's easy to shrink your Windows partition and just create a 20 GB linux partition at the end, which allows you to play around with it till your heart's content.
Oh, and check out beagle and deskbar-applet for searching. Software installation's extremely easy and there's an incredible variety of packages. - SweetyCheeks, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Actually, it looks like a wordpress plugin that creted the pdf. The download from their site was corrupt and the "offending date" error message contained wordpress 2.2 tags in it.
- SweetyCheeks, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3@dilibau I didn't like it. Stories were not fully researched. For example kudos to Dell, but then failed to mention how Dell removed the warranties for Ubuntu machines (read that in an earlier Digg story).
- srg13, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"Digg me down if you agree."
Last time I checked, that little red button is to say that you don't agree. - CircleFusion, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2These type of questions are better suited for the ubuntu forums, where you will get a more indepth response. I'll briefly answer them for you here.
1. Will it format my hard drive?
Answer - Right now, your hard drive is likely one NTFS partition which is used for drive C: in Windows The Ubuntu setup process includes a partition manager that will resize your partition so that your C: partition takes up maybe 50% - 80% of the drive (depending on how much you want to give to give up) and the rest goes to Ubuntu. You'll want at least 5GB of space to play with. That new partition (technically, it will be two or more partitions for boot, swap and files) will be formatted with the EXT3 file system. Ubuntu will be able to access your C: drive, but Windows will not be able to read your Linux partition unless you get some sort of utility installed to allow for that, such as...
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ext2fsd
http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/explore2fs.htm
2 - When it's installed will it boot from windows or from when I turn my pc on?
Answer - You will get an option screen that displays when you turn your computer on to choose between Ubuntu an Windows. It will probably default to Ubuntu and that will launch after a few seconds of waiting for you to select one. I believe there is an option during the install process to choose which OS to default to. There are also tutorials for changing the default OS on that menu, or changing the "wait" time before it starts booting the the default OS.
If you want to just try out Ubuntu, you can run it directly from the install CD and it will not affect your Windows install at all. That is called a "LiveCD". Many Linux distros have LiveCD install disks nowadays.
I suggest visiting www.UbuntuGuide.org to answer a of questions on setting up Ubuntu. - gfixler, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3In the spirit of open source, you could maybe edit it, and put it back up online for others to benefit from your experience. I'll get things started. Page 15, "Directory Structure," under "/tmp," third sentence: it's "they're," not "their."
- mrmonday1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I am guessing that by format, you mean remove windows? It will format your Hard drive, but it will not remove windows. Windows will remain unharmed ( It may scan your hard drive for problems after, this is just because it thinks your Hard drive has shrunk :P).
When you turn your computer on, you will be given a list to choose what operating system you boot to. The default will be Ubuntu, but you can change this if you like. You can get to windows, by pressing the down arrow until Windows is highlighted, then pressing enter.
Don't forget: If you have any problems, ask on ubuntuforums.org, or on IRC (#ubuntu on chat.freenode.net) - NinjaBoy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Ok maybe i'm a bit confused. I'snt an "E-Zine" hosted on wordpress really a "blog"?
- mrmonday1, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3I would just like to point out that this magazine is done entirely by volunteers, we give up our spare time to let you guys have a free magazine. Everything from articles, layout and marketing is done in our spare time. Please remember this before you pass such harsh judgement.
- inactive, on 11/05/2007, -3/+4I have to admit, even though I'm not a "huge" fan of Linux, Ubuntu seems to be doing the right things to promote itself as a real contender in the OS market. The forums are actually polite and helpful, and though there are still many things about the "OS" that I don't like, It appears to be growing in the right direction. I'm still not a full convert (I do use Linux at both work and home), and I still think no distro is ready for average users desktop, but there is potential with this distro. I'll be curious to see what it looks like in about another couple years.
- binaryspiral, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Check your pdf reader... my fonts were dead on perfect, even zoomed in for my tired old eyes.
- SweetyCheeks, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Story says this is Full Circle... No it's actually Dream Web: http://whois.domaintools.com/fullcirclemagazine.org

- Disfnord, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yeah, that O'Reilly is one sexy beast.
- pihl, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4some major layout-flaws like half pages with no text on (white-space), etc, but other than that - great magazine where you could learn something as a total new beginner but maybe also something as a hardcore *buntu geek!
- Technopundit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Let Bill do it.
- genckas, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5Very nice issue. Short (relatively) and easy to understand material like this can have a lot of effect on people migrating to Ubuntu (from Windows).
- mcmlxxii, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I really like the idea - there are a few things I wasn't aware of, a few new programs, some good tips. Yes there are good howtos online, but you only find them when searching for them. Formatting needs work, but hell it's a first issue. Could we have it in HTML though? Pdfs are alright in their place - when you want to send something to the printers for example.
- hiltinuts2, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Wow, read that wrong...
"Issue #1" not "#1 Issue" (problem) - SweetyCheeks, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2@theonedigg
Would you rather we all gush and goo over it? The effort was amazing - Wow! The idea is awesome! VERY much agreed!!
Read the comment by mattmcm "Harsh judgement is perhaps the best feedback you could want. Why? You can find out exactly what you've been doing wrong and fix it for the next issue."
