- waspbr, on 10/02/2008, -0/+37nice to see that they have reduced the RAM requirements compared to the previous release 8.04
- flashx, on 10/02/2008, -0/+27"DKMS (by Dell) is included in Ubuntu 8.10, allowing kernel drivers to be automatically rebuilt when new kernels are released. This makes it possible for kernel package updates to be made available immediately without waiting for rebuilds of driver packages, and without third-party driver packages becoming out of date when installing these kernel updates."
This feature looks somewhat helpful for drivers... don't have much idea what it does but if it promises to what it states, then Ubuntu or Linux will come much closer to easy to install OS. - bratterscain, on 10/03/2008, -2/+23And don't forget its KDE equivalent Kubuntu is now 8.10 beta: http://www.kubuntu.org/
- webkami, on 10/03/2008, -10/+31Worst game ever!
- mickstephenson, on 10/03/2008, -1/+19Any more name dropping you want to get out? Apple, PS3, Deluge, F-Spot, Banshee
- mcmlxxii, on 10/03/2008, -0/+16Quick reminder that Beta testing is about filing bugs too - it's easy to get a Launchpad account (if you haven't already) and help the whole community by reporting any bugs you find.
- rolf, on 10/03/2008, -1/+16If you want to run Windows apps, your best bet is to run Windows!
I need to keep a single Windows machine around too. But since I run mostly run *nix apps, I am happy with several linux and mac machines:) - waspbr, on 10/03/2008, -0/+14click on one of the CD images and check the requirements
- corelist, on 10/02/2008, -2/+16Comparing features to previous releases, it is growing fast through user-friendliness :)
- ssam, on 10/02/2008, -1/+14make sure you read the release notes.
especially:
A problem that could result in corruption of the firmware on Intel GigE ethernet hardware has led to the disabling of the e1000e driver in the Linux kernel included in Ubuntu 8.10 Beta. Ethernet devices that use this driver cannot be used with Ubuntu 8.10 Beta; support for this hardware will be re-enabled in daily builds immediately after Beta and this issue will be resolved for the Ubuntu 8.10 final release. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/263555 - TheWindBlows, on 10/03/2008, -0/+13The patch for this has already been made and is expecting to come by sometime next week.
So the RC due in two weeks will have the patch in it more than likely. - sloppychris, on 10/03/2008, -0/+12Last release I installed the beta for the first time and was pleasantly surprised by its stability and usability. I would never have known it was a beta.
- lordmetroid, on 10/03/2008, -1/+11I have had no problem with Samba and Nautilus on my LAN
- cricketsymphony, on 10/03/2008, -0/+9i can't tell if you're a troll or just very very wrong.
perhaps you can't see it's qualities because of predisposition, inexperience, or a very narrow minded interest in computing, but Ubuntu (and any non-windows OS) is FAR from 'worth nothing' and WINE is FAR from 'no good at all.' - truck87bp, on 10/03/2008, -2/+10The Linux world didn't count an economic downturn but I sure do bet that Free software is surely going to impact the sale of Proprietary software for the next few years. Ubuntu is coming out from behind the curtains much faster than I expected.
I like having a dual boot system but only because I'm required to use some programs that are not currently supported by Linux. Speed is also a factor that you notice when using Ubuntu every day especially when you are forced to Boot to Win. Slower than the deep recession we are about to engage in.
Thank You Ubuntu team and also to all the Linux code writers that have contributed to the Linux movement. You have all done a wonderful job despite the obstacles that laid before you. Your hard work is not going unnoticed.
Thanx again from a nubie user. - andydread, on 10/03/2008, -0/+7It's really sad that this is still broken. Here in 2008 you can't properly browse a Samba network and the login dialog does not present itself so you can log in to browse the network. its a catch 22. Its really sad that we have these silly show stopping regressions in this day and time.
- arcticblue, on 10/03/2008, -3/+10Can Nautilus connect to SMB servers correctly yet? AFAIK, that's STILL broken in 8.04 (and any other distro that uses Gnome).
- bratterscain, on 10/03/2008, -1/+8It's KDE and highly configurable in the Linux spirit. It can be changed easily as well as the kicker panel size and theme.
Though Gnome is good as well. I like its simplicity. - linuxlucas, on 10/03/2008, -7/+14I don't like KDE, really.
Too clunky and that KDE menu is bulky. Good to have the option though I guess. - cricketsymphony, on 10/03/2008, -0/+6Songbird isn't part of the OS at all. Would you be stoked if the next Windows or Mac OS came with Songbird? It's a great program, just not relevant to an Ubuntu Beta release.
- srg13, on 10/03/2008, -0/+6I have no problems browsing to my computers with smb://name or ip, but it doesn't show all the computers on the network like it used to...
- Zodiachus, on 10/03/2008, -0/+5It hasn't shown any SMB-enabled computers on my network since 7.04 or so, and that hasn't changed for me at least :/
It does show the workgroups however. I think that's new. - hanief84, on 10/03/2008, -0/+5Is GIMP 2.6 already inside?
- colonelxc, on 10/03/2008, -0/+5I didn't know amitait was latin for "Flame Bait"
- porl, on 10/03/2008, -0/+5http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/gimp
unfortunately, no :( - geekworking, on 10/03/2008, -0/+5KDE vs. Gnome is like asking if you prefer blonds or brunettes. It is just a matter of personal preference.
For those of us in the KDE camp, Intrepid is cool because it switches to KDE4. Some KDE3 people will grumble a bit, but overall KDE4.1 seems finally ready for prime time. - NTolerance, on 10/03/2008, -0/+5It's not samba, it's gvfs. gfvs can only display unprotected shares:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gvfs/+bu ... - solarwind24, on 10/03/2008, -0/+5Kernel 2.6.27 is badly needed for me. I had to recompile my own kernel because there were so many bugs with the 2.6.24 kernel on my laptop.
- Onestone, on 10/03/2008, -0/+5It can, but it still doesn't list the shares. If you type the share name manually, it will connect.
- mattycoze, on 10/03/2008, -0/+5I downloaded Ibex (beta) today and installed it just now and installed via synaptic. I'm impressed with the speed and compatibility with the nvidia gx card on the HP Pavillion dv6000 (laptop). Though the battery life is pitiful but oh well; I can't complain as an average 'home user'... Can't wait to see what the next few weeks will hold till the final release version!
Awesome stuff :D - ReidFleming, on 10/03/2008, -0/+4I have already tried the alpha 6 release of this on a newer 780G board and nearly everything worked out of the box. The only thing I found fault with at all was FF not prompting for one of the flash plugins. I'm just hoping the full release will include the newest ATI drivers as I'm not getting HW acceleration without doing work.
- waspbr, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3dual boot
- LordSnootington, on 10/03/2008, -1/+4The thing that i like about linux is how quickly they release the next iterations and get people involved in it. Not that I use the thing.
- inactive, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3it's a grab bag!
- LastDitchHero, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3I hope/wish they would include the newest Open XML filters in the repositories for those pesky docx, pptx, and xlsx files. The included ones are a little rough at best. The 3rd party ones are well worth the trouble to install them.
- mickstephenson, on 10/03/2008, -2/+5I'd be incredibly pissed off if songbird was there. Gnome needs to head towards unity in it's default programs to deliver a more fluid desktop experience. Firefox and OpenOffice already have irks which gripe me. It isnt all about Brand names you know. If that's what you want make your own Mozilla fanboy distro.
- darkchild, on 10/03/2008, -2/+5Mandriva has used DKMS for some time now (I think a couple of years or more) for use with proprietary and third party drivers. Ubuntu is playing catch up on this one.
- mickstephenson, on 10/03/2008, -2/+5Boohoo, people digg something because they like it, its a fanboi conspiracy call the ***** waaambulance.
Why did you even reply to my comment? it has nothing to do with it. - Zodiachus, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3Shouldn't that be a showstopper? Especially if it /has/ worked and then was broken?
- Biznarie, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3This happens to me too, if ubuntu is up while my samba shares go down the only way to get back to them is to type the name manually.
- symx, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3I love the features of networkmanager 0.7 and the ~/Private folder.
- wigren, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3Check out UNetbootin.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UNetbootin - sloppychris, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3That's what she said.
- inactive, on 10/03/2008, -2/+5Crap! And I just installed the OSx86. I will keep it on my HDD to test it out more (it's my first time using it) but it recognized every 'essential' piece of hardware on my laptop so far (I dunno about some ports that I rarely use), even the wireless, the guys working in osx86 are doing a really good job.
Maybe I'll keep this installation until the stable release of ubuntu if my impressions doesn't change until then, but IMHO OSX isn't as good as mac users make it out to be. Sure its far better than Windows but other than the look (which I can easily emulate in Linux) is just another Unix. Kind of a letdown... I don't know... ***** the Apple marketing :D - waspinator, on 10/04/2008, -0/+2Have they given up on the new theme idea for this release? It would be nice for it to change every 4 years or so. (and I know I can change it easily, but I don't like to. Also don't bother telling me to go back to windows if I like the theme to be decided for me, because as much as I would like a new theme, not having one won't bring me back)
- DreadKnight, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2Try some virtualization, such as Virtual Box, it's way better than dual booting; you can have windows run under linux seamlessly.
- n8dude, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha 6 is working great on my Lenovo y510, can't wait to try out the beta.
- arcticblue, on 10/04/2008, -0/+2Yep, this is the issue I was talking about. That needs to be fixed ASAP.
- mooninite, on 10/03/2008, -1/+3Fedora has also had DKMS for a while. The nVidia and ATI drivers on third party repos used it (except livna).
Welcome to 2007 Ubuntu. - oobuntu, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2really? which bugs?
