Dugg for Tribes 2 reference - kazamx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+24Correction from the tribe 2 rlease notes:
Compiz Fusion
Compiz Fusion is enabled by default and will bring 3D desktop visual effects that improve the usability and visual appeal of the system. The Gutsy Gibbon automatically detects whether the hardware is capable of running compiz; if not, it falls back to the "metacity" window manager. Additional effects can be enabled in "System/Preferences/Apperance" under the "Desktop Effects" tab.
It looks like Fusion stands a good chance of making it into gutsy :-) - trogdoor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17" Please ***don't*** run gutsy unless you are familiar with dpkg and dependencies, bug fixing and the like. Things break, this is normal"
- kazamx, on 10/11/2007, -2/+18Please please please please, let the Compiz Fusion guys get their act together.
If they can stop all the in fighting and really hammer out a solid stable release it will be in 7.10 as the default (with metacity as fallback) It would really be a shame if they missed this chance and we had an extra 6 months to wait. - sqrt7744, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14please nobody do this unless you really know what you are doing.
- sirhomer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Fusion is already pretty damn stable, even for an alpha.
- generalloy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11That's ATI's fault. Since you can be sure that free software developers are trying very hard to add support for these cards (see avivo).

sudo sed -i -e s/feisty/gutsy/g /etc/apt/sources.list - DarkDx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7green? I don't like green for a desktop, and the brown is aceptable, anyway this is linux people! You can customize it the way you want, blue, pink, black, or blue, however you prefer it ;)
- cminardi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Firefox 3 is still in development phases - just like Gutsy Gibbon. That doesn't mean you can't get the source early and compile it ;) . It might be buggy but it should still be usable.
Compiz Fusion is a combination of the Beryl Project and Compiz which are the leading desktop effect programs/projects for Linux. Ubuntu implemented a few primitive features from Compiz in Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) that are able to be enabled from the Preferences menu. - cminardi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I'm glad to hear it - I was kind of depressed with the "Enable Desktop Effects" option in 7.04 - it's like they tossed it in there for the hell of it at the last moment. I just left that setting turned off and installed Beryl which proved to be incredibly useful and cool.
People will appreciate the window management features more than the realize. - Satertek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Does it include a jetpack and a spinfusor?
- DarkDx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6If it says compiz fusion it's because it has compiz fusion (complete), actually feisty desktop effects are not "dumbed down", just install compiz-extras, compiz-plugins or better: apt-get install compiz-* and you get the whole thin ;)
So, if it's as basic compiz fusion just go and grab compiz-plugins and compiz-extra ;) - System84, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5My big question would be is Compiz Fusion the full blown release or is it kind of a dumbed down version with only a couple effects like compiz is in Feisty? If its full blown that will be very significant and I wouldn't be surprised to see other distros follow.
- 13thMonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Easiest thing to do is install Gutsy under VMWare or similar. That way you can play with the new stuff and see without breaking your current install. I've been running Tribe1 this way since it came out (no need to reinstall Tribe2 - just apt-get the upgrades). You won't get the eye candy but you can help with bug reporting.
- System84, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Thanks for clearing that up it is appreciated. I'll probably give it a run on my spare box.
- sqrt7744, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4that's exactly what i've been thinking for ages. Green is wicked and not taken yet by windows or mac.
- cminardi, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Pop in the LiveCD and fire up GParted (the GNOME partition editor) and then cut a new partition into your hard drive that's like 5GB in size. Then you can use that as a testing partition for new operating systems without touching the data on the other parts of your HD.
- sanderscm2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Would Ubuntu be the best way for me to get my introduction to linux? I've been curious for a long time, but I've been too busy..
Also what are the differences between Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Edubuntu, and Kubuntu. Aside from the fact that they use different file managers-is there anything different on the front end? - bigtomrodney, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I know where you're coming from but Compiz was stripped down to the most stable elements so it would be usable for the most possible people. I am running Feisty on my laptop on the moment and it's the ideal amount because it starts up quickly and doesn't affect my suspend/hibernate at all.
- Spaceomega, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5I will have to download and see if my WUSB54GC will work. The only one it worked in was Feisty Herd 5. I'm sad that I cannot use Ubuntu because they won't fix whatever it is borked this wireless adapter.
- stockjones, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Lol I was thinking the same thing Tribes 2 on Ubunutu. Quake War eh. Bring back Tribes.
- Karmalary, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Bugzy. 'Glad I snapshoted my system.
- amblin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The hours I wasted playing T2. Sigh...
- stonyhill, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3This is not released software. This is not yet even a beta! It will break, between now and October, and unless you are used to the command line interface, you will be better off sticking with Feisty until the release candidate in a few months.
- kazamx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Thats kinda the point of tribe releases. The tribes are for those of us who almost expect to destroy our system, in a way we want to. If I can find a bug that destroys my system now, then it won't make it to the final release.
If your going to use a tribe release make sure you take cminardi's advice. Make a 5gb partition and install it there. That way if/when anything goes wrong its easy to start again. - gavintlgold, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3They aren't really fighting any more. And updates to GIT happen every day. I wouldn't worry too much :)
- sacherjj, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I haven't purchased anything but nVidia in two years. All my computers run great with Ubuntu. Speak with your dollars.
- danielandrews, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2That's what secondary hard drives are great for.
- joflow, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3it changes "feisty" in the repo urls to "gutsy" in sources.list then you apt dist-upgrade to go upgrade all packages to Gutsy I think. I haven't used Debian/Ubuntu in a while.
- DarkDx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I just downloaded kubuntu tribe 2, (going to install ubuntu-desktop tough), Do I like bugs? yes, because you can report them and get a better final version whenever it goes gold. I wonder how compiz fusion works, and if it this one works without crashing at boot because of my asrock mobo (with crappy "AGI" interface instead of agp).
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5Compiz fusion is nice, but i get freezes with it i don't know if its a bug in a specific animation or what. I will have to do some more testing, *will read the changelog*
- stonyhill, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Just fair warning to the people who will be whining for our help in the forums next week when Ubuntu "breaks their computer."
- Authustian, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Our flag is mined. Shazbot.
- TheDamned, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2ppl really should read what they are downloading.. "recommended for Ubuntu developers
and those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing bugs". - bmorency, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I have an NVIDIA 7800GTX with the latest drivers (version 100.14.11, i installed them a couple days ago) I get a bit of freezing too. It freezes for a second or so than it is OK for a little bit before it will happen again.. it happens mostly when I try to open a menu (menu bar or right clicking), or if I am viewing a video on a website and try to scroll. I didn't find any fixes yet. I know it's still alpha so i am living with these problems.
- fluxion, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2yah i thought Tribes 2 was released under the GPL. i still cant believe i traded my Tribes 2 for Quake 3... never even got the chance to run it on a system that could run it decently.
- Jammerdelray, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2That's awesome Ubuntu 7.10 will now come with Compiz-Fusion!
- etx313, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You using ATI drivers? I had the same problem with it on an ATI x300 months ago. It's not a compiz thing, it's the driver itself.
- kazamx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Installing it isn't the problem, at least for me.
I know of many people though, that are using Ubuntu but don't have the effects installed. Making them appear as default will open their eyes. - weizbox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1yea, and they managed not to include gnome-art and stripped out the default gnome backgrounds, etc. Why? I'm not sure...
- Megatog615, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Firefox 3? Where? I'm running Gutsy and I have Universe enabled but the latest is still 2.0.0.4...
- nmap, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1how do you snapshot your ubuntu system?
- weizbox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1yea... they must really like people using that brown(for advertising?). They even managed to strip out the default gnome backgrounds and didn't include gnome-art which makes it really easy to get new themes.
- dcherryholmes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I don't want to digg you down because you are providing a useful answer to sanderscm2's question. But when I saw the words "gnome" and "light weight" used in the same sentence, I was tempted. ;)
- addicted68098, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I love the name Compiz Fusion!
- lengau, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I think you mean "especially for an alpha".
Anyway, it's extremely stable. EXCEPT for the KDE window decorator. I don't know what's up with it, but I can't get the KDE window decorator to work in Feisty. It keeps crashing. Is it just me?
Oh well... Beryl still works for the time being... - weizbox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I got the ATI drivers up and running just fine in 7.04, and it even had the tv-out working better than it does in Windows. I still can't clone my desktop to my vid out in Windows, but with Ubuntu.. or any Linux distro for that matter, it works very easily.
