- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37I think we should have 5-6 editions of Ubuntu, code named something like Zenith or Horizons or something like that, and then some editions :
Ubuntu Horizons Home Bronze
Ubuntu Horizons Home Silver
Ubuntu Horizons Home Gold
Ubuntu Horizons Media Center Home
Ubuntu Horizons Media Center Plus
Ubuntu Horizons Professional
Ubuntu Horizons Professional Deluxe
Ubuntu Horizons Enterprise Business Desktop
Ubuntu Horizons Enterprise Business Desktop Pro
Ubuntu Horizons Enterprise Business Desktop Pro Ultimate
Maybe then we'll be taken seriously. - diggapleaze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28erm.. It's actually called Ubuntu 7.04, not 7.104. It's going to be released in April, which is the fourth month of the year. Get it?
- raynevandunem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21Solid Snake?
Nah, that's probably copyrighted. - NICU, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27Can they name the Kubuntu (KDE version) the Kourageous Kitten?
I think this thread should just be used for ideas for new names, instead of the usual "Linux isn't ready for the desktop" and "Why do all these ubuntu articles keep showing up?". Be creative instead of complaining! - lordsandwich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20How about Fire Fox?
Pretty sure that isn't taken yet. - SniperGX1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Kinda like how apple uses cat names, Intel uses names of rivers, and microsoft uses names of mountains or in the case of longhorn, the bar between two mountains. Yeah, they won't be taken seriously
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15from pbaehr's link:
"Edgy Eft 6.10 -- Fire up the crackpipes! (?!)"
WTF? - pbaehr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15No need. There are plenty for the Ubuntu developers to choose from here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DevelopmentCodeNames
Got a brilliant adjective or animal noun? Submit it to the wiki. - 0siris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13how bout "Proud Penguin"
or "Dangerous Donkey"
heres a good one "Crazy Cactus"
or "Hypnotic Hawk" - mrtrick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I'm a pretty die hard Ubuntu fan, but I wouldn't call the release of Edgy "excitement". It was one of the worst experiences I've had with a Linux upgrade in years.
- suntereo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Uh... ok. So the point of this is to let me know to stay tuned for the next release of Ubuntu... which is usually released on a *6 month schedule* anyway? Hey guys, lets DIGG this up!
- tsf5000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I think Proud Penguin is the most appropriate.
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Haha, yeah. Fancy Falcon is awesome.
- SniperGX1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Its not ready for you, it is ready for all of us who use it on our desktops
- TheDrunkMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I think "*****' Flamingo" would be better. That might generate some news coverage or something.
- Herald42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The parent clearly meant he wanted it delayed so that he could commemorate the Red Baron's success.
Clearly. - NICU, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The day after is for celebrating ;-)
- SniperGX1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7pain doesn't begin to describe it. I hope the next will go more smoothly
- pbaehr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@burke:
Yeah, you're right...that's pretty weird. But, then, it is a wiki, so who knows what that's supposed to mean. - LabThug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"Wait one more day? For what reasons?"
spritom,
4 20 is a drug culture thing:
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=4+20
Not that I would know anything about that :-) - growler1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Funky Flamingo.
kidding - mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6No problems whatsoever over here. Been running edgy since Beta 1, although now I've done a clean install.
- SniperGX1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eft
- NICU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I just did a distro upgrade from Dapper Drake to Edgy Eft and had zero problems. Just had to reboot and patch Wine so I could play WoW and that was it.
- ehudokai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5OK, I know it's been said... it's 7.04 not 7.104, but I'd like to say that whoever blogged this needs to do a little checking before posting. They also said that the Debian import freeze would be December 21 2007, A good 8 months after the release. I know they meant to write 2006, but between the two glaring mistakes and the lack of a link for me to verify the info at, I want to scream!!!
- mozami, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I sense a pattern D(apper Drake), E(dgy Eft), F(eisty Fawn)... The next one may be a "G"...
Like Goofy Goose or Giddy Gnu
Gol Gull any one? - strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@Herald:
I'm sure many people do celebrate April 20th by eating lots of Red Baron pizza... and whatever else they have lying around... and then going to the gas station and buying 4 big bags of pork rhines. - erkokite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Nutritious Nightelf anyone?
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Most likely, you'll be ignored and stay at +1.
- 0siris, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4it wasn't bad, just very long.
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Agree 100%. I don't usually bury articles about my main OS, but this one, I did.
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4MICROSOFT LONGHORN !!
A failing attempt to undo the effect of inadvertently naming his company ! - burke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It worked fine for me. Then again, I upgraded about a month before the release.
- 88iou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sounds nice. I hope when I use it , it won't freeze my display in 640x480 again.
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There's already one Grumpy Groundhog.... I don't know if we'll jump straight to H after Feisty, or maybe even skip H because of Hoary... (?)
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6No, the sarc tags wouldn't have helped. Your comment is lame either way.
- cynicist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23. You are supposed to umount it first
- Ademan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I like falcon, maybe not fancy though, Fierce Falcon would be cool, i'd rather feel like i was riding a falcon instead of prancing around in tights with bambi.
- ubuwalker31, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"The excitement of Edgy is over"
Isn't that true. *sigh* I am using Edgy as my desktop, and frankly, I'm not that impressed. I'm not happy with the font rendering (it was perfect in 6.06) and grub looks weird. And why only two desktops in the lower right hand corner? - mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4LOL .... sadd man... saddd.
I really SHOULD start putting [sarcasm] [/sarcasm] quotes around.. Scroll up and read my other comments, if the :D smiley didn't make it clear enough :P - knightblade2oo4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I thought Warty Warthog and Hoary Hedgehog were bad...
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3No but I suppose you can already switch to feisty repositories! :)
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2sudo sed -i 's/edgy/feisty/g' /etc/apt/sources.list && sudo apt-get update
There's your torrent...
EDIT: Sorry, should have been in reply to Buelldozer - bobbourland, on 10/12/2007, -5/+74.19.07? They should wait just one more day.
- Ademan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I had major problems with my dist-upgrade, and i also know many others had the same problems. I just did a clean install and all was well (backed up my home folder onto an external drive of course) but honestly the only thing i've retrieved from my home folder was some source code i've written and a few school papers. The rest i've kept around because i do figure i'll need it again at some point in time.
cheers
-Dan - JudgeDredd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I had some hiccups with the Edgy upgrade from Dapper (didn't install off of a CD). It took me a day to figure out what went south. Yeah, it was released a little early, but I am happy with Edgy now that I figured out what was FUBAR'd.
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2haha, I'm running "emerge -uavDN world" right now... and... for the past 6 hours...
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11) Add "deb http://www.elisanet.fi/mlind/ubuntu edgy fonts" to your Software Sources, then run Update Manager, and see if you like the fonts better. I really love it. Default edgy font rendering is harsh on the eyes.
2) Hey all it needs is 2 clicks to get 4 desktops in the lower right corner!
3) Grub .. well it's not impossible to change it, I had a graphical grub menu with the Ubuntu logo and ***** when I was using Dapper. Haven't bothered to replace the grub theme after reinstalling Edgy though. Shouldn't be too hard, just replace a couple of files here and there. - Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm marking my calendar for the next emerge. Ooh, it's gonna be exciting, it might have a portage update.
- culbeda, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3And is anyone concerned that someone that was previously unfamiliar with Ubuntu might be put off by "Fiesty Fawn"? I get the running joke, but in a world where the community is TRYING to be taken seriously...
By way of an analogy, I was evaluating cheap(ish) SOHO NAS solutions and came across what I consider to be one of the best, Infrant's ReadyNAS. I checked out their forums to see how well their product REALLY worked only to discover that all of the employees has Star Wars character names on the forums. (http://www.infrant.com/forum/) We put off doing business with them for 6 months because we wanted to make sure they were really stable. -
