- jasonsfakename, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Do you Ubuntu?
If Ubuntu supported games I would delete windows in a heartbeat. - japface, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15well WINE will hopefully do the job eventually.
- Jacob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14this isn't a dupe, the other beta announcement is a link to an article that doesn't even link to a download link yet. This is a link to the official page and though it says it's not officially released yet it gives you links to download the beta. Plus it explains the new feaatures and whatnot.
- cyberwiz01, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12compiz not by default, but Aiglx (better than Xgl, unless you're running nVidia) is built in, Just a couple changes to xorg.conf enable it.
- peerk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Yeah, and it is a shame there is no way to change it.
- tapo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Tell that to Valve. It isn't Ubuntu's problem.
- nubtard, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Can't wait for the final.
- bigtrouble77, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I have cedega running about 10 games nearly perfectly. Most of them are strategy. Cedega is a lifesavor. Since the introduction of profiles Cedega has taken a huge leap forward in usability.
- Asbradley21, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Dual monitor support without manual editing of Xorg?
- cmost, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"compiz not by default, but Aiglx (better than Xgl, unless you're running nVidia)..."
I thought the new nVidia-9625 drivers (admitedly still in beta) support AIGLX finally! Also, I read somewhere that with X.org 7.1, AIGLX is built-in and therefore isn't needed at all. - blinks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Nathanael: Did you read the article? Upstart as a replacement for sysvinit, aiglx by default -- very exciting things.
- Jacob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3yeah its released on the 28th i believe this is the first beta there will be one more beta then the final release at least that should happen unless some unforseen problems come up.
- Jacob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes this is different from knot 3 it is much more refined and much closer to release however if you are currently running knot 3 and you do an apt-get upgrade it should automatically give you beta 1
- cmost, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5"why does the Kubuntu art have to be so fugly compared to the Ubuntu art? I probably spent 3 hours yesterday and today making KDE look more like Ubuntu's Gnome. Almost got rid of every last bit of blue...."
Ugh! I'm just the opposite! I hate the browns, oranges, and caramels of Ubuntu. It makes the desktop too nauseating to work with, at least in my opinion. I typically spend several days after a fresh install converting everything from GDM and login splash to the wallpaper and icons to soothing shades of blue. I use the HumanAzul2 icon theme which is nearly identical to Human, except blue. - salinemist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'd digg you down for whining about drivers when you're running linux on a non-intel laptop, except you have a Mr. T avatar....... :-)
- stonyhill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Edgy has major upgrades under the hood (Upstart, new "generic" kernel, etc.) that will be felt more profoundly in the '07 releases. Also, many major Ubuntu apps got significant upgrades (Firefox, GAIM, Evolution, etc.) and Mono was added by default, which allowed the inclusion of Tomboy and F-Spot.
- scytale99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sadly, still no Airport Express support for the PowerPC version. I understand this is Broadcoms fault for not releasing their drivers but still there are workarounds to this that you would think Ubuntu could bundle in. Maybe in the final release in October?
- Jacob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2compiz is in the repository and they suggest aiglx which by the way you can use with nvidia if you run the beta nvidia 9xxx series drivers.
- jonnyq, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6why does the Kubuntu art have to be so fugly compared to the Ubuntu art? I probably spent 3 hours yesterday and today making KDE look more like Ubuntu's Gnome. Almost got rid of every last bit of blue.
Ubuntu's art, like it or not, is refreshingly different from everyotherfrigginoperatingsystem... - schlurbna, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Edgy currently has the 8774's, but the beta drivers (9625) and a matching kernel (2.6.17-10) are available from:
deb http://dev.realistanew.com/beryl edgy beryl
The 8774's also claim to support GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap so may work with AIGLX but I haven't tried with them personally. - nickdr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4did you even read the article?
- thelastknowngod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i just thought about this... edgy is release 6.10. just so im sure about this... its due out next month?
- jdong, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Sadly, not for Ubuntu yet. It'd be a nice feature to have though :-/
Kubuntu should be able to set up Xinerama dual-head via the GUI, but not nvidia twinview. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why are they replacing gThumb with Fspot. Fspot starts to re-organise your photos into its own annoying folder system. At least have an option to disable this.
- Nathanael, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I can't understand the hype surrounding this. Ubuntu is a great distro, and stays at the top for a reason, but if you were to compare this new version and its "features" to upgrades on other operating systems, this barely qualifies as an up-DATE. New wallpapers and boot splash? What about a revamping the UI? It's nice as far as Linux goes - true, but I have yet to see a release of Ubuntu I'd be proud to show off to the other technicians I work with as a competitor to XP or OS X. I have Dapper dual-booted on my laptop, and I, for one, see no overwhelming reason to "upgrade tonight".
Don't get me wrong, I really like Ubuntu - but let's keep it in perspective eh fellows? - Jacob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2but that is just the US site this has links to download locations in multiple countries for better speed.
- Jacob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2look at the page in the article it shows screens of all the new features
- eadnams, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5XGL/Compwiz included yet?
- Jacob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah waiting for XGL as an integrated option is never going to happen, the biggest reason being that in order to run it you need to use proprietary drivers which ubuntu will NEVER ship with out of the box. Also XGL is going to slowly die out after the new NVIDIA drivers are released and then the new ati drivers which should support the pixmap functionality needed to use AIGLX or to bypass both all together. Their are bugfixes put in plus this is still beta and the most notable bugs should be gone by the time the final release happens. What more tools do you need in the GUI what you can't do can be done easily with just basic knowledge of the command line hell even basic knowledge of how to use google.
What do you mean by GUI service control? And what annoying bugs in nautilus?
Ubuntu isn't the maker of nautilus bugs in nautilus are going to need to be fixed by the gnome crew i think.
But I do agree I don't like the new bootsplash I don't know whats going on all I see is a damn scrolling bar reminds me of "windows" and thats not what I want out of my linux distro. - DuoPros, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I had major problems with resolv.conf, fixed it with chmod though.
- tlwolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For the KDE people the link is
http://kubuntu.org/announcements/edgy-beta.php - whirlwind12, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Cedega *almost* does the trick.
- jonnyq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I understand the anti-brown crowd, even though I kinda like it.
But, blue just gets old. Windows XP is blue. OSX is blue. I get the impression that KDE is only blue to look and feel more like Windows. Having the bottom panel arranged just like windows xp by default backs up that impression. Something doesn't have to try to be a windows clone just to be pretty and user friendly.
If anyone has a favorite non-blue KDE theme, I'd love to look at it. Right now, I'm using a Human theme for KDE. - Curufir, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6You must have a corrupted download, the default wallpaper is Ubuntu Wave.
- cyberwiz01, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Does the edgy beta have the newest nvidia drivers? I have no way of testing them right now. I knew they were working on Aiglx support, but I wasn't aware that It was running already. That's great news, there's so many bugs in XGL anyways. I've had much better stability (and performance) with aiglx.
- eadnams, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1is my ATI X1900 Supported tho? :)
- Jacob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1ATI doesn't support AIGLX yet but you can always use xgl. It's in the repositories but beryl should be released today so I would wait for that and install xgl/beryl.
- Shadowman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@jonnyq
I personally prefer blue themes, like the defaults on SLED 10 or Fedora 6. But even if you don't like blue there are a few other colors available last time I checked. Brown and orange would be my last choice. Just being different doesn't make it good. - burke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Hardware Failure: Please replace sarcasm detector on system: jdong
- jdong, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Fully functional compiz and Xgl are present in the repositories, but not set up or enabled by default. It's not too hard to turn it on though, especially if you have an AIGLX-supported card.
- shaolinpunks, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3"Ugh! I'm just the opposite! I hate the browns, oranges, and caramels of Ubuntu."
amen! - jsilve1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I agree with Nathanael -- where are the important upgrades, tweaks, improvements, and bug fixes?
New boot splash?? C'mon! I want a real GUI services control and a fix to several annoying bugs in Nautilus and other apps and maybe integrated XGl as an option. But really, some serious GUI administrative tools, bugfixes, and other core stuff would be nice.
For now I'm gonna put this on my "wait until next year" list. Along with my lung transplant, boo hoo hoo - jdong, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6Umm, since when? You can change the wallpaper to suit your taste....
- LazyBoy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2balla
- dsn0wman, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5Why is it that we all love beta software so much? I gotta install this on one of my machines tonight!
- insertnamehere, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1is anyone having problems upgrading with update-manager? i think i'm just going to have to download an install disc
- b.m.a.n, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2RIGHT ON!
- cyberwiz01, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3I was hoping they'd change the Login and splash screens from the knot releases for the beta, but they are still ugly. I much prefered dapper's splash and login. Gnome-look.org here I come.
- torhu, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Default fonts still ugly has hell, I presume?
C'mon linux fanboys. Just admit it! -
