- Heliologue, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26I think they eft up when they picked that name. (rimshot)
- gonzales, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24"So dream a little about Xen for virtualisation, Xgl/AIGLX and other wonderful wobbly window bits, the goodness of Network Manager, a first flirt with multiarch support for true mixed 32-bit and 64-bit computing on AMD64, the interesting possibilities of the SMART package manager... "
The future looks rather bright for Ubuntu. Keep it going! - thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21it's funny how we love announcements of new ubuntu releases and dread windows ones ;D
- phoenixp3k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I don't see Elf mentionned anyware. It's Eft "An Eft is a youthful newt"
Newt: "Any of several small, slender, often brightly colored salamanders of the European genus Triturus or the North American genera Notophthalmus and Taricha, living chiefly on land but becoming aquatic during the breeding season." - edjm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"In terms of the management of the release, we will have some fun with the core Canonical team. I'm promising to impose (almost ;-) zero from-the-top requirements for Edgy, this release is entirely up the to development team to envision and implement."
This is more than just a code name announcement. Please click thru and read the post. Exciting times ahead for Ubuntu. - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"I'm not too sure whether this is a good thing for Ubuntu. Sometimes, a project needs some direction to keep it on track. Giving developers too much freedom may result in a situation where they set out with too much in mind but end up with too little being done."
Well it's not like they're saying "go crazy, do whatever"; Ubuntu as an organization sets goals of its own, but in the past Canonical would pass down things to the Ubuntu team as priorities. This time, Canonical is saying they have none of these requests, and want to see what Ubuntu as a team can come up with. This is more like taking Ubuntu off its training wheels, not just kicking them out the door. - bitweever, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8This headline would have made no sense two years ago.
- debian_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Surprisingly, XGL/Compiz isn't actually that large when implemented. Compiz itself is only around 300KB (I believe, based on discussion on the Ubuntu forum) and XGL itself would get smaller as it slowly merges with X. Aside from the update Mesa libs, most of the components I had to download when getting the eye candy working on my Dapper install were quite stall, so people (myself included) hoping Ubuntu will remain a 1 CD distro should remain pleased for Edgy's arrival.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6So the "Buggy Buffalo" release may have some problems, eh?
- koko775, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7True. Two years ago, though, there would be no headline anyway, as there would be no digg.
- chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8"Windows Vista is gonna run like crap."
Key word being "is" as in "may or may not" and "I don't have any idea what I'm talking about".
"Who cares about aeroglass when it eats up so many system resources."
Much like XGL/Compiz, Microsoft's plan to shift some of the UI heavy-lifting to the GPU and use more advanced graphics features that have been available for years - will likely REDUCE CPU and RAM overhead. Otherwise your fancy graphics card only works for you in-game. MS and Linux both are trying to bring the great graphics hardware to work for you in your desktop environment.
Besides, Vista and Linux both have the option of having these features on or off.
So not only is it optional, but it actually improves performance while lowering overhead (less CPU and RAM usage for the UI).
"To me that makes it irrelevant before it even comes out"
Do you pre-judge Linux releases in the same fashion or just Microsoft?
"because I need a modern OS"
Vista isn't modern?
"that can run on old hardware"
With Areo turned off, what are the requirements for Vista? Compared to a default Ubuntu install?
"like Ubuntu."
Ubuntu isn't exactly snappy sometimes. Especially the previous releases. Running Dapper since Flight 5, and have noticed improvements, but I haven't had a chance to test it on some older hardware yet. I'm hoping that the general feel and speed won't be that decreased on older hardware - but I haven't had a chance to test it. Have you?
I really shouldn't be replying to such flame-bait, but I was in the mood... - Pizon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I was hoping they would use something like Flighty Ferret or Plucky Platypus. I guess this will have to do.
In all seriousness though, I could care less what they call it as long as they keep releasing this fine distro. - r00tus3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ubuntu certainly seems to be the linux distro of the future right now. Great find.
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5She turned me into an Eft.
An Eft?
I got better. - phoenixp3k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If we still want it to fit on a single CD I'll say no to some point. But at some point it doesn't have to be default. If you can enable easily and have the right graphic/video card. Besides, installing XGL/Compiz in Dapper doesn't look harder than installing you ATI Drivers...
- Narpas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I totally know where you're coming from. My own hope was Tremendiumpulous Tyrannosaurus.
- ketsugi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I just read about this on the Ubuntu forums http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=162552
This sounds like good news but we do need to remember it's still quite a long way away; Dapper isn't even final yet.
Still it's cool to hear how Ubuntu's going to evolve further after Dapper Drake is released. - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I can't wait, I'm currently loving breezy badger- it's so sweet. Keep up the good work guys.
(I admit I just had to reconfigure xserver, it doesn't like my graphics card)
Other than that, I have no complaints. - discoloda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i enjoy the naming scheme, makes it feel more 'human' (even though they are animals) and less technical. love em or hate em you gotta respect the power of them.
- kurtkraut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3When a Ubuntu version is released, it is named by the first name only. So 'Dapper Drake' is called like this only during its developing. After 'Dapper Drake' release on 1st june, it will be called as 'Dapper' only.
- ericesque, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Did anyone else read the headline as "Edgy Elf" first?
- tedwardo2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3from the front page of ubuntustudio.com:"We have been in contact with Canonical, and they are working toward having a 'Multimedia Ubuntu' ready at Dapper+1 release time."
I was hoping this announcement would mention this so-called "Multimedia Ubuntu" - n00854180t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've never managed to get ATI drivers working on Ubuntu. Of course, that's a criticism of ATI much more than Ubuntu (as I love the latter, and utterly despise the former). ATI continues to disappoint me with its drivers. Some of the newest ones even set my monitor to undisplayable refresh rates (Windows).
- Karisson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Ubuntu picks the weirdest names. Hoary Hedgehog? Breezy Badger? Whatever, I still love the distro.
- returnofmalv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I would have gone with Erotic Elf -- but that one's pretty good too.
- macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2sounds like a zoloft commercial
- debian_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2To the general public, Eft will probably fall under the same critisisms that past Ubuntu releases have as far as naming conventions. Internally, in the general Linux community and Ubuntu community in particular, it will probably be reffered to simple as "Edgy" much the same way "Dapper" is now. Personally I find "Edgy" a perfectly reasonable (and descriptive) pseudo-name for this release.
- WDot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Ubuntu marketing methods:
1. Pick random adjective.
2. Pick obscure animal that happens to share the same first letter with 1.
3. Write a paragraph explaining how this clash of dictionary denizens is a great name. =P
I'm not trying to be a troll, I love Ubuntu but I HATE their marketing methods. (And yes, I did RTFA.) - btipling, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"MS and Linux both are trying to bring the great graphics hardware to work for you in your desktop environment."
Yeah they're both doing the same thing, except one is going to cost hundreds of dollars and the other one will be free. So it's really not the 'same' is it... - searayman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yea we all hate windows, and love ubuntu
- gonzales, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm not too sure whether this is a good thing for Ubuntu. Sometimes, a project needs some direction to keep it on track. Giving developers too much freedom may result in a situation where they set out with too much in mind but end up with too little being done.
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2is ubuntu allowed?
Yes, but you need to agree to a EULA in the install process(see suse). However, ubuntu does not ship non-OSS software on hte cd, so it wprobably wont make it in there.
Alternative?
No. Most likely they will use aiglx instead of xgl, which can fall back on non-3d drivers and work fine without having the drivers installed. Ive never used aiglx before so im not 100% sure how this will work, but once you install the drivers you can enable the eyecandy without having to change the x server.
Battery life
Ya, its not good for it. However i think nvidia/aiglx devs will make it so that the video card is in the lowest possible power state when xgl is in use. AFAIK, right now it tries to render as many frames as it possibly can, so you get overkill processing and it totally maxes out your card. - drizek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2While it was certainly not worded too well, i think the OP was referring to te vista interface in general as eating up too many system resources, which is correct depending on what your defenition of "too many" is.
vista is modern, but it wont run on old hardware. Hell, xp doesnt even run on 128mb ram without being too F'ing slow. Vista wont even INSTALL on 128mb ram, so you need 256mb just to get it to run like *****. This is what MS said, its not just something im pulling out of my ass.
Ive been using kubuntu dapper on an old computer with a 700mhz p3 and 768mb ram and it runs very well. its got a geforce 4 mx 440, i havent installed xgl on it yet, but i will try it sometime soon. However of the ram is going to waste, so id say that kubuntu dapper will run well on a 700mhz p3 and 256mb ram based on other experiences ive had. It will run on something like a 400mhz p3 with 128mb ram, but it obviously wont be as snappy. I think 64mb ram is out of the question at this point to run kde or gnome, although something more lightweight will run like a champ(im using DSL on a p2 laptop with 64mb ram, even running off the cd it is still very fast).
Anyway, edgy will be faster than vista and will have more features. It wont be as stable i dont think until edgy+1, but it will still be more secure, and a hell of a lot more fun.
- gonzales, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't see what's wrong with using animals in the codename, Apple uses it for all its OSX releases, MS used Longhorn prior to Vista (although that theoretically isn't an animal). These names are chosen to foster familarity within the community and to make the current release easier to remember than just hard, cold numbers.
- n00854180t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Should" being the keyword here. It usually configures it with ***** Mesa drivers, which are a pain in the arse to change. I've never managed to get it working after installing(despite it not even being that involved a process, it usually just "doesn't work" in all manner of ways). Of course, that's to do with my having a 9800XT and it not being very well supported (again, ATI's fault for writing such ***** drivers).
- spartan777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ cduquette: No. nvidia's drivers are closed source, so the default, open-source drivers built-in to x.org will have to do. of course, it isn't really a big deal to download nvidia's drivers and install them. nvidia has had BY FAR the best linux graphics drivers of any company. ati's drivers don't even count in many cases.
i think xgl/aiglx will be built in when edgy eft comes out. the real question is, which one will they implement? i think that even if they implemented one, you could uninstall it, and install the other, just like you can with gnome, kde, xfce, fluxbox, etc.
did you guys notice, "Cluster Install" in the possible additions for edgy? i'm already excited about edgy eft, and dapper isn't even out yet. - debian_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Sometimes, a project needs some direction to keep it on track."
That's what the Ubuntu Developer Summit is for, to take all the ideas and requests put forth by the developers and the community, and formulate a realistic list of the best and most requested features to actively pursue.
The freedom Mark is giving Edgy is that there will be few prerequisite features that _must_ be taken care of. This means more of what the community and developers want gets put in. - Antrex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, you can almost envision Ubuntu running along with the speed and grace of a hedgehog.
Seriously though, their naming is at least rather original. Most projects, like Vista, drop their project names in favour of something far less outstanding, which may not always be the best thing.
And yes, i'm really considering Ubuntu for one of my empty partitions. - BionicBeefpile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I'm not too sure whether this is a good thing for Ubuntu. Sometimes, a project needs some direction to keep it on track"
I think that they have always looked at Dapper as sort of a "landing on a stairway", and they are taking this opportunity to branch out and look for new and exciting things to implement.
I don't want to say that everything after Dapper is a restart, but it's definitely a chance for the development team to step back for a second, look at the entire system, and then go from there. - voraistos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1YES. You guys are totally right! They should call it "Ubuntu media-center build4973a prenium plus gold edition", just like the usual boring awfull crappy M$-oriented softwares ! I think the name totally reflects the ubuntu-way: different, maybe strange, but a rare thing that has something the others have not, and certainly not your credit card's name ! (prenium, gold, etc.......)
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1xserver sould automatically configure your ati driver for you.
- miaow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I still like the names but it must make things confusing for novices. There are too many names now, and they do sound a bit cheesy, I suppose. Not sure if they are part of the attraction or a turn-off
- zoltanthebold, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"I'm not trying to be a troll, I love Ubuntu but I HATE their marketing methods. (And yes, I did RTFA"
I think the names are dire and, frankly, do little to sell such a professional and slick OS. I know it shouldn't matter, but perception is all. If I knew very little about OSs or computers, crazy names would do little to tempt me away from the fairly safe marketing-hell type names like Vista etc And it's the newbies Linux needs to appeal to. Just a thought. - chrisbudden, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It sure does! Do you think we'll get XGL/Compiz by default when the time comes?
- Feztaa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mark mentions that after a few more releases, they're going to have another really clean, stable release like Dapper Drake. I propose that release be called "Elegant Eagle"
- bitweever, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Advantage: koko
- gookie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Too much prep talk in there.
- fivefootstep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0suggestion to Debian: "pseudo-name" = pseudonym. =)
As for the name, I like the adjective-and-animal-name-starting-with-the-same-letter convention. I'd like to point out that this is the first vowel in the series, if I may.
...it's the first vowel in the series.
Consider that pointed out.
I would say an Eft could easily be called Edgy, and I'm certain some Warthogs are Warty. Are Hedgehogs Hoary? I don't even know what "Hoary" means. And Drakes are certainly Dapper, not to mention the only mythical creatures on the list so far. Cuddly Chimera? Probably not. Moody Mermaid? I like that one.
H W D E - I don't see any particular order in here. It certainly isn't the ASCII collating sequence (read "alphabet")
...anyway, that's my "analysis" of the Ubuntu naming convention... just sharing.
Edit: It took me three tries to enter that stupid CAPTCHA... it's really much too difficult to read, and it's already been defeated by PWNTCHA - so I don't see the point. - haxx4, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6Windows Vista is gonna run like crap. Who cares about aeroglass when it eats up so many system resources. To me that makes it irrelevant before it even comes out because I need a modern OS that can run on old hardware, like Ubuntu.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1What a stupid name...good lord you think they could be a bit more creative.
