- c0ldfusi0n, on 10/10/2007, -5/+63I love how most of the comments try to discredit Ubuntu and the hype Canonical is trying to create around it. 2 years ago every linux geek was desperately hoping that Linux becomes more popular, and when it finally does, they ***** on it like it's nothing. I don't care who uses Ubuntu and who doesn't. Ubuntu's popularity is the best thing that happened to Linux since a long time. So stop trying to bury it. Embrace it, then when the world adopts Linux solution, you can start talking about alternatives to Ubuntu to people who became experts with it during its popularity phase.
- Ub3rg33k, on 10/10/2007, -7/+50What's with all the Ubuntu hate here? If you don't want to hear about it, delete Linux/Unix stories from your preferences. If its not your favorite distro, who cares? At least they're getting people interested in Linux.
- Quickdood, on 10/10/2007, -0/+34I love getting free major updates!
- aalaap, on 10/10/2007, -2/+28Ubuntu is really, really good.
- hackmyballs, on 10/10/2007, -3/+25"Ballmer to all M$ employees, go to digg to bash Ubuntu stories"
- sexybobo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20I use ubuntu 8 hours a day or so and the only time i have had any problem is with flash player. I think SuperWinner is right and you should try to see if it is a hardware error. If you have the install cd still pop it in and while it is booting up select memtest from the menu and see if it gives you any errors.
- azprofessional, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17Not everyone is a ***** programmer coder trolls. If you can't give anyone credit for using Ubuntu as an intelligent decision to swtich over cause you're champion basement dweller running slackware and need to feel (falsely) superior than everyone, remember, you are a self-absorbed bain on any progress and probably eat your own *****. I love Ubuntu and Ubuntu studio, I don't need to sit in front of the terminal or editing things all day.
If you like complexity, great, but give people credit for opening their minds. Close minded asshats
Internet works, sound works (and yes I did compile it), opengl works and Jack works. Have a tall glass of go ***** yourself. There I said it, begin trolling like it matters to anyone. - TehDoctor, on 10/10/2007, -2/+18Emacs sucks. Use Vim
- AmazingAndrex, on 10/10/2007, -12/+28Can't wait.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17Perhaps you need a hardware diagnostic, cuz I have never seen this happen. The only time I f-up 7.04 is when I use ENVY to get the ATI drivers, but since I started using 7.10 all the driver issues have gone away completely, even with ATI.
- Ub3rg33k, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17Oh no! Linux people have been trying to get the general public interested in Linux for 10 years now and finally someone is making some headway. THOSE BASTARDS!
- khpmli, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16make a bug report in https://launchpad.net/ubuntu so your problem can be solved & stop whining
- sprash, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12I'm already running the Beta of 7.10 on my MacBook pro:
-Rock solid
-WPA Wireless encryption works out of the box
-Shiny Desktop Effects even with my ATI graphics - num3thod, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14(X)Ubuntu is a great piece of software built around a sound philosophy and deserves support and/or recognition. It just keeps getting better and better with every release. So pundits can bitch or rant about it all they want, Ubuntu will have no other choice but to steadily grow and succeed with time.
Who would argue that the software industry would NOT benefit from an open and competitive market? It drives innovation and creates new opportunities in the market place.
BSD/Linux is here to stay. And Ubuntu will be a key player for a very long time to come.
At least try it FFS!! - mudgod, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13I am. Need to setup a machine for a nephew, waiting for the latest edubuntu for that. Also looking forward to the upcoming multi-monitor applet :). Heck I've already picked up an extra monitor for my 7.04 computer and a wireless ubuntu compatible nic for the nephew computer build :P
(Looking forward even more to the release following this once since it'll include KDE4 and hopefully by then the ATI drivers will have been ironed out too) - oobuntu, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13Cheer up billy. They are doing a good job to spread the word about an alternative to the Microsoft way (TM) . Personally i will be using Kubuntu on my desktop but it's still in a good cause.
- Ub3rg33k, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Then get off your ass and start promoting Sabayon. Write articles, upload how-to videos, and digg the hell out of them. Quit whining about the people who are actually trying to do something to promote Linux.
- haiduz, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14I think I might finally spring and finally try out ubuntu once this comes out live.
I only tried installing ubuntu 7.04 this summer and it didnt wont because the intaller didnt support my card on my laptop ATI x1300 (this was a know reported issue).
Rather than digg through and try find a solution, I thought of this as a prerecursor for things to come. Besides windows satisfied all my computing needs.
However, now I am taking a class where I connect via SSH to a UNIX machine to write code in EMACS and there is no mouse support all text based. Since, Im sure that ubuntu comes with emacs I am excited for this release to give ubuntu another chance. - fak3r, on 10/10/2007, -6/+16No, they specifically said they were going to make wifi support WORSE in the new release, they planned this on launchpad early in the development of this release. /sarcasm
- thushan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11yes your right. It lacks the premium price tag, monthly slogs of bugfixes and the sub-culture of fanboi's ruled by a tool of a iCEO.
- Phocion55, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Installed a virtual instance of 7.10 Tribe 5 in KVM. No issues here. Quick and painless install.
- ucg1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Finally, someone who actually names a distro that they think is better than Ubuntu instead of just saying "there are better distros."
- l00s3r, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Install XP first and you'll be okay. Ubuntu configures Grub to work with both automatically.
- ucg1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Let me know what other Linux distro is apt-based, has a 6-month release cycle, and works as well as Ubuntu on the desktop. Ubuntu isn't popular only because it has funding. It's popular because its a really good distro. And I say this as someone who has used Linux since 1995. Debian was my distro of choice before Ubuntu (and may be for some server installs), but the choice between either the 2 year release cycle of stable or the constant upgrades of unstable made me move on to Ubuntu.
Personally, I'm glad there is a distro that is getting huge attention and attracting the masses. Attention to any distro is good for all other Linux distros. And as far as companies go, I like Canonical's approach much better compared to many of the others. - Ellipsys, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I have to say, this is not an Ubuntu problem, but rather a Flash on Linux problem. Blame Adobe first of all, then blame Linux if you really feel you need to. However, don't blame ubuntu.
- kaskoosek, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Advantages of Ubuntu
-Very stable
-Great diversity of useful open source programs
-Ease of use compares to other distros
-better security
-direct connection to the net even for noobs
-the "coolness" factor - MikeDawg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Or emacs is for people that love testing the distances that their fingers can stretch while pressing multiple keys.
- oobuntu, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Actually it is http://wubi-installer.org
- slack31337, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8 vonskippy the dummy that doesn't know how to enable a root account...
- killercow, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Some people actually spend time building an kick-ass OS in their spare time.
The some nitwit comes along and anounces they are all sheep when they want to celebrate everything they achieved.
Right, Sheep are those who follow the flock, right, so the flock currently is Windows users acocunting for 95% of the animals, and one Sheepsdog being the mac/linux user. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Try googling it. Dozens of forum threads (some reaching 50+ pages), blogs, and chat logs about the very same issue. I wish it was trolling, because I really really want to like 7.04..but it won't run long enough without freezing for me to do so.
- TheHydrogens, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7I think you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about... Ubuntu is a linux distribution...
- TheHydrogens, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7I take it you are in to that kind of thing?
- AXNJAXN, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6This is Linux. Ubuntu is just an oranger, more popular Debian.
- azprofessional, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7and for the record, who exactly do you score points with for out-linuxing someone? Can you suck your own dick too?
- GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Not a hardware problem. They've said that to a load of people but it turns out it's to do with how Linux polls some IDE drives. Canonical can't really do too much about it, it's kernel specific. I haven't tried the latest Ubuntu yet so cannot comment on if this has been fixed, I still use 6.10 primarily though.
- GRAVEWiSH, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Yes
- markdr123, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Telling that...shut up!
- TheZorch, on 10/10/2007, -10/+15I installed Ubuntu using Wubi (www.wubi-installer.com) which put the OS into a mountable virtual filesystem that's selectable at the Startup Menu. Anyway, I like it a lot and will be using this instead of Windows for everything but my gaming. A friend of mine uses a Mac the same way, installing Windows in a BootCamp partition just for gaming, and when Parallels improves their DirectX support to include 9.0c he'll drop the BootCamp partition altogether.
- ruscoe, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I've tried SUSE, PCLinuxOS, Arch and Ubuntu. I've stuck with Ubuntu. Seriously, what would you recommend I try to see if I like it more than Ubuntu?
- sabach, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I know of several grandmas using Ubuntu and wondering why they ever liked windows.
- Stonekeeper, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5try using nano. It's a pretty good editor that works over ssh.
- Chandon, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7I doubt that a bug report will do much to help his 1.) hardware problem or 2.) random stuff he made up to troll with.
- ferric84, on 10/10/2007, -5/+9what a douche bag
- paulsmith288, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7why read this thread then?
- ferric84, on 10/10/2007, -7/+11Is this release going to have better wifi support?
- leszek, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You can use "sudo -s" to have a shell with root privileges.
And I disagree that Ubuntu is not for advanced users, I used several Redhat releases and then gentoo for 2 years before switching to Ubuntu with edgy. - GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The only potential use for Emacs is for Lisp development. For everything else it does there are better alternatives. It is really good at Lisp development though.
