- yetAnotherCroc, on 01/14/2009, -10/+1378Stupidity causes girl to drop out of college
- knuj, on 01/14/2009, -14/+908God know if your Verizon CD won't load then you can't get on the internet.....I think it's miracle the editor was even able to post this story, How poorly researched. The 'Girl" shouldn't be in College perhaps McDonalds is her calling.
"Her Verizon High-Speed Internet CD won't load, so she can't access the internet. She also can't install Microsoft Word, which she says is a requirement for MATC's online classes.
As a result, with no internet and no Microsoft Word, Schubert dropped out of MATC's fall and spring semesters." - i88gerbils, on 01/14/2009, -10/+825misinformed and biased reporting, check.
- Kingoftherings, on 01/14/2009, -6/+699Wow, dropped out of two semesters?
How do you accidently buy an Ubuntu laptop from Dell anyway? They're extremely hard to find. Heck, I have to Google it whenever I'm looking for them, because I can't remember the URL, and there is no link I know of on Dell's site. - waubers, on 01/14/2009, -9/+575You can't fix stupid. But, apparently, stupid thinks it can go to college.
- depro9, on 01/14/2009, -25/+458This is ***** ***** lol!
- photonics, on 01/14/2009, -7/+428Linux: weeding out the stupid from college. awesome.
- inactive, on 01/14/2009, -43/+443As soon as I saw the part about her inability to access the net due to not being able to load her Verizon CD, I knew she wasn't college material.
You don't need your ISP's CD to get on the net, I always throw mine in the garbage as soon as I get it.
Also, Openoffice > M$ Office.
Lrn2Linux.
And if she really wants Windows, she should Lrn2Pirate. - gitboxgreg, on 01/15/2009, -19/+414............................................________

- Frayed_Knot, on 01/14/2009, -7/+263"if your Verizon CD won't load then you can't get on the internet."
Make fun of her, but this *is* how most people think you have to use computers and the internet.
Even the lowliest Digger is, like, a totally l33t hax0r compared to the average user. - mrBitch, on 01/15/2009, -2/+226Last paragraph FTA :
"Verizon says it will dispatch a technician to try to assist her accessing the internet without using the Windows-only installation disk.
MATC also says it promises to accept any of Schubert's papers or class documents using whatever software she has installed."
So, her problem was that :
1. She didn't ask Verizon to assist her to connect to the internet, in which case Verizon would have shipped her a Linux setup CD instead of the Windows setup CD she was using.
2. She didn't know that MATC were Ok with her using Open Office instead of MS Word.
How THE ***** is this a story? - Snap65, on 01/15/2009, -4/+204What happened to the computer she used to get online to buy the Dell Ubuntu computer?
- xfile087, on 01/14/2009, -13/+211Totally ***** indeed! She could just install Windows XP herself if she's that bothered - don't see how that can void a warranty :/
- michaelenger, on 01/14/2009, -3/+198You would think that she would at some point ask someone to help her with her problem. If she can't get the Verizon CD to work, perhaps the solution is to contact Verizon, not drop out of school and blame the computer.
- dthomasdigital, on 01/14/2009, -11/+191Holy crap, is this TV station owned my Microsoft, wow what FUD.
- RIOGoose, on 01/15/2009, -8/+175*rolls eyes* Mayhaps someone should have directed the intrepid Ms. Schubert towards OpenOffice...
- sh0rtbus, on 01/15/2009, -5/+161***** me, that's my hometown... how embarrassing
and of course she's attending MATC... the local junior college that's ever so accommodating to failures like her. hopefully she can get her problems figured out, and hit the books hard to earn that associate degree in hair design.
dumbass - ryan83189, on 01/15/2009, -8/+164The world loses another art history/ english literature major.
- timfidler, on 01/14/2009, -4/+154Where do you start?....
- ray4389, on 01/15/2009, -2/+149When reading the article, all I heard was "I'm a dumb bitch"
- Goomba37, on 01/15/2009, -7/+152I thought the same thing.
If she needs a CD "to access the internet", then she needs to go to some prep school before college. If that sort of ignorance is fostered in college, how is she supposed to survive in the "real world".
Then again, maybe not. I mean a moron who has a paid position to write this sort of garbage, actually managed to publish it (maybe the space should have been between i and s) and presumably, get paid for it. Maybe that is the problem, the stupider you are, the quicker you move up.
Or just sleep with the professor - goodness knows this girl needs all the help she can get. - Cyclist110, on 01/15/2009, -2/+143She spent $1,100 on a "bread and butter" laptop. Basic laptops at Dell are $500, that's not bread and butter. What a terrible article. Maybe the reporter went to MATC as well.
- Bicep, on 01/14/2009, -6/+131So I was digging through my blog posts and it turns out that hooking up with Verizon while being on GNU/Linux has been a difficult thing to do...in NJ anyway. The reason is because their ppp-modem/router redirects you to a Verizon software install page, which was incompatible with GNU/Linux. And so after wrangling with the tech support(turns out you have to say you have a MAC instead of mentioning GNU/Linux at all - this needs to change), they finally told me the trick to turning off the "Walled Garden" redirect page and my friend has been using her Ubuntu machine with Verizon ever since. See my original blog posting here:
http://www.humans-enabled.com/2007/06/verizon-dsl- ...
So I'm actually glad the video in this digg article surfaced because now I have more selling points to go to Verizon with - to tell them they need to support GNU/Linux. I mean GNU/Linux users aren't asking for Verizon to administer their machines for them, they just don't want to be BLOCKED from using a Verizon modem to get to the Internet just because they are using GNU/Linux.
So anyone who thinks this is a discredit to Ubuntu, listen to the whole video... never do they say she drops out or even fails two semesters at all.. they say she is on hold (until the next semester). The school says she can take the classes with what she already has installed - meaning their course is web standards compliant and uses documents that can be edited with Open Office - meaning she can use Ubuntu no problem. As for her Internet, Verizon says that she can get online but that they will have to provide her tech support to do so (instead of her using the installation cd that was made for Windows). The title of this story should actually read "How a college student gets bitten by a terrible Monopoly of computer operating systems, and how we need to STOP THE TAX!!!".
I'll be contacting the news station and maybe even the user(if I can) to let her know there's a whole community out there to help her. - rabidbob, on 01/15/2009, -2/+119But that would require Ms. Schubert to not be a retard.
- andermic, on 01/14/2009, -1/+118I like your title better... wish I could switch it.
- inactive, on 01/14/2009, -2/+118No, they don't. Their service works fine without the CD, I throw mine in the garbage whenever they send one out.
- php4me, on 01/14/2009, -33/+136"Verizon says it will dispatch a technician to try to assist her accessing the internet without using the Windows-only installation disk. MATC also says it promises to accept any of Schubert's papers or class documents using whatever software she has installed."
Basically this is Verizon's fault. They make you install junk on your computer before accessing the internet? It should be plug and go. Boo Verizon. - sh0rtbus, on 01/15/2009, -3/+105do you really think she would even know how to install an operating system? maybe an etch a sketch would be a more reliable device for her needs
- meatwaddancin, on 01/14/2009, -13/+106Yeah Ubuntu would be great if they would just add in the ability to use the internet and type papers, I can't believe they haven't thought of adding that yet.....
Even though a lot of people do want Linux to catch on and overthrow Windows, I kinda like how it is right now where I feel like I am showing that I actually know what I am doing with computers to choose Ubuntu, over just having it someday because its the default.
Same thing with my Mac, even though I do encourage others to get it, it always makes me sad when I go into the Apple stores and hear people at the genius bars complaining about how they think they have some viruses from limewire on their macs or just complaining about the dock or expose or whatever else. Even tho Macs aren't really anywhere near Windows, the amount of people getting them just because its the hip thing to do has gone up tenfold. Ubuntu and OS X are what they are, and people should be switching to them if they like what they are, not because everyone tells them to. Dell is great for offering Ubuntu, but obviously this girl was not ready or willing to understand it. I don't know how she decided to stick with it after Dell told her it was great, but yet was still unable to find Open Office on it. I like to know exactly why I choose my own computer. - matthekc, on 01/14/2009, -10/+103I feel her pain I had to run windows 2000 in a virtual machine for school... and occasionally get stuff done in the computer lab...oh the suffering...
/s - inactive, on 01/15/2009, -4/+91Headline should read "Dumb girl drops out of college"
- PsychoBrat, on 01/15/2009, -2/+87The girl must surely have way too much money if she doesn't bother reading what it is she's about to spend a couple thousand dollars on.
- trogdoor, on 01/15/2009, -1/+83Exactly, I don't think it's even possible to accidentally buy one of Dell's Ubuntu machines. They don't advertise it anywhere, the only way I have ever seen it is by searching for Ubuntu or going directly to http://dell.com/ubuntu.
- fuse13, on 01/15/2009, -1/+74she dropped out of two semesters.
doesnt she know anyone who knows something about computers? couldnt she even pay a few bucks to get someone to sort out her issues or install windows? does it take 2 semesters to figure all this out? - geodebug, on 01/15/2009, -3/+76100% PEBKAC
The TC in MATC == Technical College == Community College.
I'm guessing she was more on the community college side. - inactive, on 01/15/2009, -1/+71She has a bright future slinging herself around brass poles.
- inactive, on 01/15/2009, -5/+75You don't help out someone based on their looks.
Actually, I'm wrong. - inactive, on 01/15/2009, -1/+69The fact that a news organization actually sent a crew to do a story about this idiot genuinely hurts my brain.
- temujin2012, on 01/15/2009, -9/+76manpages, bitch.
- fuse13, on 01/15/2009, -1/+67yeah but she sounds like the kind of girl who would break a pencil and then sit around all day not writing because nobody is telling her she should go get a new pencil.
when she gets fired, IT WAS ALL THAT DAMN PENCILS FAULT! - PrintScrn12, on 01/15/2009, -2/+68OpenOffice is pre-installed on Ubuntu. Click the application button (similar to the windows start button) move the cursor to Office and click on OpenOffice Word Processor from the list that pops up. Two obvious clicks analogous to the Windows user interface (if that is what she were used to).
- heucuva, on 01/15/2009, -2/+68This entire story reminds me of my father. The man dismantles and re-builds complex transistorized (or integrated circuit-based) radios and amplifiers without flinching, but the moment a video screen or keypad comes into the equation, his brain turns off.
Every time he wants to play a video game (it's usually the same Mahjongg game for DOS 6.22 that he's been playing since 1992), I have to drive over to his house and find the icon for it on his Windows 95 desktop which has all of 7 icons on it (in huge icon size for myopic old farts).
When I wrote down steps on how to connect to the internet (using dial-up modem), he acted like he was understanding what I was telling him (I used radio terminologies)... but alas, the moment I got home, I got a phone call from him asking for help, followed by a whole mess of DTMF, which I can only imagine was the phone number for his ISP's dial-up host.
Heaven help me if he ever decides he needs to hook his digital camera up to the damned thing again. - SeraphOfAsgard, on 01/15/2009, -16/+81Whoa buddy. Openoffice might be free but compared to MS Office it isn't nearly as good. OpenOffice is bloated and full of memory leaks. Okay now I know MS Office might suffer from the same problem but hell it works very well. Openoffice is horrible software in my opinion and i've used it for almost a year now on another computer.
- jkt527, on 01/14/2009, -9/+74This young woman is an embarrassment to moderately intelligent Wisconsinites (there are a few of us). And, NO she is not easy on the eyes as previously posted :\
- Renton, on 01/15/2009, -1/+64I signed up for Verizon DSL back in 2006. They game me the install disc too, but when I put it in my Ubuntu box, it said I needed Windows XP. I called up tech support and told her I was running Linux and she actually knew what I was talking about and told me how to fix the problem (which was to just open Firefox, type in 192.168.1.1 then enter a password.)
And I only had to do that for my desktop. Every time I connected with a laptop, or my Wii, it would connect just fine. - aluminumbat, on 01/15/2009, -1/+60Spend some time in your local big box store, and you will be amazed at the stupidity. I routinely get people who confuse XP with Word. There a lot of people out there who don't even know that there exists a concept known as an operating system.
- valis, on 01/15/2009, -9/+67I call *****. Ubuntu had nothing to do with it.
