I use Windows because I choose to not because I don't understand how to install Linux. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -21/+88"So why exactly are you still using Windows?"

Yes, there is a reason it's so slow : It's ATI.
I have an Ati card. Ati's Linux support is pretty disgustingly bad. I mean, in 3D it's decent (DECENT), but in every other aspect it's WORTHLESS.
It's really mostly the little things you take for granted. For instance...
If you're using fast-user-switching in Ubuntu, the 2nd session doesn't have 3D capabilities. Ati's driver can only do 3D in one session at a time. Nvidia drivers don't have this limiations.
If you're playing back video in xv, ati offers nearly zero accelleration. (I have a slower box so it's more important, but I can watch the Halo 3 HD video just fine with the open source Radeon driver, but it stutters BAD for the Ati card.) Nvidia not only accellerates better in their driver, they also support better accelleration (see next point).
Mpeg-2 streams are accellerated with the Nvidia driver via the XvMC extension. Ati's drivers will probably NEVER support it, even though ALL Ati cards have had MPEG-2 accelleration hardware via the Rage Theatre chip since, well, the RADEON.
Ati doesn't support AIGLX, or more importantly, the SINGLE extension required to make AIGLX work, an extension that has been finalized since June of LAST ***** YEAR, that EVERY OTHER DRIVER FOR LINUX, INCLUDING THE NO-*****-BUDGET OPEN SOURCE RADEON DRIVER, has had for at least FOUR MONTHS now. (apologies for the caps, it's really infuriating when you see it this way)
Ati hardware is ***** frustrating because Ati doesn't see the value in spending 2-3X (which I'll be honest, is an extra $million or two per year at least) their current rate on their driver engineers, which is what they'd need for :
- OpenGL speeds that aren't ***** (WindowsXP/Vista/Mac/Linux) (Check any benchmark lists, and always take a glance at the Doom3/Quake4 benchmarks. They DO NOT CORRELATE with DirectX performance even REMOTELY)
- Mpeg2/4 decoding/encoding accelleration in Windows/Linux/Mac that detects the hardware on any Ati card that supports it
- Linux support that isn't disgustingly slow in every aspect but 3D.
It's really frustrating to have such nice hardware (heck, look at the folding@home GPU stuff!) that gets butchered by such ***** drivers.
- As you might have guessed, I'm soon to abandon anything Ati makes that's not on a console gaming system. - lengau, on 10/12/2007, -74/+134@sh4rkb1t3 - Funny, that's one of the reasons I stopped using Windows.
- minimaximus, on 10/12/2007, -11/+69Why do I still read Digg?
Digg Top Stories:
1. Windoze is the $uck, LOLZ
2. Steve Jobs is God Incarnate
3. Linux is so EZ dude, even my dead grandma can use vi and ssh
4. iPhone
5. Beryl + Compiz + Pretzels = Heaven
6. Apple iPhone is Steve Jobs Incarnate
7. Google is not evil, really
8. M$ will go bankrupt once your dead grandma starts using Linux
9. Vista is worse than Windoze 3.11, says Stallman
10. Digg is too sexy for the internets - Easty, on 10/12/2007, -16/+72Maybe because I want to play something other than WoW?
- bestadvocate, on 10/12/2007, -3/+54I was hoping he would show how to go from full screen access inside the game to rotating in Beryl, that sort of thing doesn't normally work for me. Usually you have to do some creative keybinding reservations and all that jazz. I'm also getting a little tired of watching videos of Beryl do nothing but spin and wobble. The mystical minimize maximize is cool though.
- RubeusEsclair, on 10/12/2007, -11/+59Thats just to name a few problems. A friend of mine just got Warcraft 3 working in wine, but then to get something else working, he spent 3 hours recompiling it, only to have it break everything.
That, folks, is a big reason people still use Windows. - randomvictim, on 10/12/2007, -10/+56Because there are many, many more games out there than World of Warcraft.
- JeffH, on 10/12/2007, -18/+58Not only that, but then the process of getting WoW to run is a pain in the ass too. And if you have an ATi card? It's not even worth the trouble.
Hell, Ubuntu refuses to even install on my machine, no matter how much I want it. - Disease, on 10/12/2007, -6/+42And us ATI users are still left in the dust
- th3heretic, on 10/12/2007, -6/+38Why aren't we switching? Because WoW isn't the only game in the world.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -15/+43I don't know which is more annoying, people who try to shove linux down your throat, or Jehova Witnesses. I use Windows because I am used to it and it works completely fine for me. I don't get viruses, adware or any other *****. It doesn't crash. It runs everything I need and then some. Why the hell wouldn't I use Windows? Because it costs money? "cough" ahahaha "cough".
So let's add that up:
No crashes
No viruses / adware
It runs everything perfectly
It looks very appealing with a visual style from deviantart
Why would I want to switch? I've ran Ubuntu, before. It's too much hassle just to get basic things working, for me. I'm an extremely experienced computer user, who has no trouble with linux. I can get things working, it just requires too much googling and thought. The time and thought invested wouldn't be so bad, if I had a real reason to switch. But with the points I made above, I just can't find a point in it.
Just because grandma gets tons of viruses, 20 toolbars in IE and adware -- doesn't mean that everyone on earth should switch to linux. - rayraym0fucka, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30that's it! you're all blocked!
- heavensblade23, on 10/12/2007, -11/+38Eye candy is nice, but it's not worth switching operating systems for.

THAN. THAN THAN THAN THAN THAN.
"More then" Is hardly ever correct. - Hello1024, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Your definition of "not very expensive" isn't the same as some other peoples. I personally buy my desktop PC's for about £250 GPB, (about $450 USD), and keep them 4 years, but I don't think they'd run that.
- garg, on 10/12/2007, -6/+26I have an ATI graphics card in my laptop and it too way too long to get it to work. It was almost not worth the trouble to install this (plus getting wireless to work was a whole other story).
- KataLieb, on 10/12/2007, -7/+27You dont have to "apt-get" anything. In Edgy and Feisty you just add the repositories with your happy mouse, then use your happy mouse in Synaptic to select the happy Beryl and click away "Apply" and the happy GUI happily installs your happy programs. For the CLI-restricted peoples ;)
- TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -13/+33Damn, that maximize/minimize animation is so ugly.
- minimaximus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22deducing? it's?
12. Digg Users abusing the English language. - AstralAutomaton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18You're not alone on this one, but if you didn't hear Creative is making linux drivers available later this year. We'll just have to wait it out.
- guice, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20@sh4rkb1t3
I dug your comment not cause I have the same problems (I can get around the technical bs) but cause I feel this is the very thing that still holds Linux back still. Linux has gotten MUCH better in the last year, but there are still too many little things that can go awry that average users won't be able to solve. Not to mention the lack of a uniform UI api so commercial companies could, more easily, create applications. Right now, there's too many desktop environments (not always a bad thing) that have their own custom APIs (thats a bad thing) which makes it hard for anybody wanting to make a commercial venture into Linux applications. - rnokkin, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24'Cause I want to. Why else?
- falloutsyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22Why am I using windows still? It's called an x-fi soundcard, linux supports everything else in my machine. But not my soundcard, and i'm an audiophile. Anyone else in the same boat?

Not a very expensive machine to build, and everything runs very well. Seriously, there are a billion different resources out there to make this possible for anyone. - Bleeblaow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17I've got to agree. I run Xubuntu myself. And while I love it, it is, in no way, easier to SET UP than Windows.
Once you've got the stuff you want set up working, it is wonderful.
But I cannot use some of the programs that I love; they're just too big of a pain in the ass for me to set aside hours at a time just to install them. It took me FOUR HOURS to get The Rosetta Stone (language-learning software) to work properly. Among the things I needed to do for it to work included downloading a scripted command somebody else wrote so that I could change 1000+ filenames to upper case. Wtf. I even had to set up some virtual drive partitions to load the .iso's into and copy files out of the virtual drives into the .wine folder, etc. etc. This is, of course, all done in the terminal.
Honestly though, it's kind of fun when you have the time to devote to it. And I guess I'm lucky because all of my hardware is compatible with it. But just because it runs World of Warcraft and has tools to make your desktop ridiculously sexy doesn't mean it's less frustrating than Windows. Yeah, Blue Screen of Death blah blah blah. I still miss being able to install any piece of software that I like. Wine does not work as great as some suggest. - glitch13, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19*note to self*
Never put a tongue in cheek, rhetorical question in a Digg post, people will actually try to answer it. - CircleFusion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17I'm a linux user and supporter, and I wish that other linux supporters would acknowledge that the majority of complaints like the ones above are legitimate complaints. Linux is great. It's a very capable OS with a bright future. It is not, however, as easy to use as Windows.
It does bother me when some people don't consider linux because of some misguided impression, but many of the complaints about Linux are real problems. IMO, Linux is not quite "there" yet. Ubuntu is working on its usability though, and I am thankful for that. - Felshadow, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21because its hard to set up
i only have my windows to game because wine / cedega always bugs out for me :P - bovox, on 10/12/2007, -11/+25"So why exactly are you still using Windows?"
Uhhh, because the typography support in Windows doesn't look like ass.
... because WoW isn't the only game in Windows.
... because errantly editing a single configuration file of the many required editable config files can screw up your entire Linux system making it unusable.
... because you shouldn't have to open up a configuration text file filled with cryptic commands just to run a program.
... because you inevitably have to use the commandline in your normal use of basic applications.
The only thing Linux has going for it is that it is free -- which is fine and dandy for hobbyists when what you're doing on your computer isn't time-critical. For the average user, doing things on Linux takes a lot more time than on Windows simply because of Linux's little quirks and perpetual "beta" status. - theblt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18@ryawn

CS2 isn't working and CS3 is already on its way. - byronm, on 10/12/2007, -23/+36ATI works great in Vista!
- OrangeTide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Windows barely supports that card. I've been pretty unhappy with all of Creative's audio drivers for Windows. :(
- lampshade, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13There is a reason why this was done in Ubuntu. Ubuntu has made AMAZING advancements in the end user area of desktop linux. Everything seems to work soooo much better with Ubuntu than other distros I've tried. It is the closest thing I've encountered so far that can claim that things "just work"
In the past I've been one of the people that would just go off on GNU+Linux. It was not ready for the desktop. Now? Close, really close. I think a large manufacturer is really the last step at this point. At times, I hated GNU+Linux. Honestly, I don't want to spend time making the media keys on the front of my laptop work. Even if I do get them to work, it took my time to do it and the end result is basic functionality. That isn't impressive. It is stupid to have to follow guides and things like that for just configuring your media keys to basic functionality. With Ubuntu, they worked out of the box! No configuration! Which is great, because that is how that should be in my opinion. Ubuntu has killed so many issues it is incredible. Without Ubuntu, I don't think I would still use Ubuntu as my laptop OS. With Ubuntu, however, it is possible. Wireless works. Media Keys work. Hibernation works.
Installing programs? Say goodbye to things like the command line. Unless you want to use it, you don't have to. You can now download a package and just double click on the .deb file you downloaded. A wizard like program comes up and it is next next finish. (Oh, you have to type your password in for security too...) It is actually that easy. This is how I installed both Opera and Skype. (for those readers that are thinking "You can just get those in synaptic" yes, you can but I wanted the newest versions)
I guess what I'm trying to say is... I was one of those people who used to hate linux because some stuff was done really poorly and __no__ linux geek would admit it was done poorly. That has changed. The Ubuntu team will find something they don't like and actually change it making it easier for the enduser. There are guides to install the fancy 3d stuff that you can follow--but why? Why not make a simple button for the user? So they did in the next version. Bam! It is that type of thinking that has made Ubuntu sky rocket to the top of the linux world. - rdwtux, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16i like how this article has been dugg well over 400 times so far, however the linked video has only been viewed 99 times.
- allyant, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Same with my laptop that is running Intel graphics.
- heavensblade23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Yeah, I heard Creative is making X-Fi drivers available 2nd Quarter of this year.
- chris4404, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Any idea on hardware specs?
- XVampireX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11You can make a virtual desktop for wine :)
- Temujin2887, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Are you an idiot? Vista uses memory differently than XP did, having a large amount of memory used up is not only perfectly normal but actually a good thing, think of memory that is empty as wasted memory.
please know what your talking about before you make sweeping negative generalizations about an OS you seemingly know nothing about.

Actually... it makes everything feel far more fluid, and more natural if you spend long periods of time at a computer. Booting back into XP, everything feels stiff and artificial in comparison. It's purely aesthetic and subjective, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have value. - jcaino, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17thats funny - i've actually had better success with wireless connections in linux, especially in terms of maintaining a reliable connection.
