- samanathon, on 10/18/2008, -5/+34Tabs in Nautilus are such a hugely reported feature, but I really doubt that it will get all that much usage... Honestly, how often are you browsing 1+ directory locations (other then doing a quick file copy) that you need to have it all in a single window?
That being said, I'm really excited for this latest, greatest version of my favorite operating system!! - theaverageidiot, on 10/18/2008, -3/+27The article is not fanboyish.
Ubuntu and Linux in general always seem to have trouble with things like wireless and Bluetooth because of proprietary/driver reason. It's a big step forward because it works out of the box. You have no idea how many times I've had to go find wireless drivers and such to install on friend's Linux boxes. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the Bluetooth/Wireless - it worked exactly as it should - so why should it get anything LESS than 10/10? - num3thod, on 10/18/2008, -7/+31Very good review.
- weizbox, on 10/18/2008, -2/+24Tabs in Nautilus I think is huge.. at least for me. I move files around all day, so keeping multiple locations up is a huge gain.... no more need for multiple nautilus windows :)
- nyx210, on 10/18/2008, -2/+16Maybe you have a ***** laptop.
- amfantasy, on 10/18/2008, -1/+15The dark theme looks so much better, but I've ran into a few problems. Some apps were really hard to read because it had black text on a very dark theme. I hope they fix it soon
But I think I'm going to convert to Ubuntu now, I'm sick of distro hoping. - airencracken, on 10/18/2008, -0/+12Just wait for the official release. It is only 12 days away.
- ZippyV, on 10/18/2008, -1/+13Preview, not review.
- priegog, on 10/18/2008, -0/+12It's the way Linux is designed, you can't NOT have a user account (which isn't passworded). Ever heard about how Linux doesn't get any viruses (ok I know, they are certainly possible, but the reality is you'll never find one and hose your system) ? It's partly due to this design.
Anyways, you can have gnome autologin at boot, so what's the big deal? - Vadi0, on 10/18/2008, -0/+10Huge for me, because I always have 4-5 nautilus windows open.
- coldkill3r, on 10/18/2008, -0/+10You should always have good security practices.
- luchid, on 10/18/2008, -0/+10It's still better than Windows, where I have to install a 50 MB package that includes the drivers and a crappy Broadcomm BT Utility that does nothing but suck up RAM like there's no tomorrow. Without that utility I can't use BT.
- pingveno, on 10/18/2008, -0/+1015 minutes for a complete operating system? Gentoo usually took me a day or more. That's part of the reason I don't use Gentoo any more...
- cloviejr, on 10/18/2008, -3/+12Dugg for the guy naming his cell phone "Klitoban"
- notwizt, on 10/18/2008, -1/+10Go Ubuntu!
- inactive, on 10/18/2008, -0/+7Because he wants to? Also, ubuntu has a big chunk of users compared to other distros and most apps will have at least one .deb repositorie. That's a killer.
- goggys, on 10/18/2008, -0/+7Go to System-->Administration-->software-sources-->Updates-->Release upgrade, and select normal releases. When Ibex is officially released, you just have to run update manager and it will upgrade to Ibex. If you don't want to wait until it is officially released, which I do not recommend, then type in "update-manager -d" in the terminal.
- ethana2, on 10/18/2008, -0/+6They're working on it.
- topgunhomer, on 10/18/2008, -0/+6Tabs would be a great addition for me. I copy files from drives often enough that having multiple windows open is a pain. I wish Nautilus had more features that other Ubuntu file managers had...like replacing folder icons with cover art automatically with Amarok.
- arjie, on 10/18/2008, -0/+5If this is a problem, set a default logon, with a very short time-out. It's your computer, you want everyone to have access to your files, it's your choice. But it's like that for a good reason.
System > Administration > Login Window > Security > Enable automatic login - chicken101, on 10/18/2008, -0/+5They have been talking about overhauling the theme since 7.10, but they haven't done it yet. I know that it's easy to change, but i'd like to see a nice default theme for ubuntu. This dark theme looks pretty terrible IMHO.
- priegog, on 10/18/2008, -0/+5Well, that's what other distros are for. To suit your needs.
- DarkLaughingMan, on 10/18/2008, -0/+5You've never had to look up anything for Windows or OSX?
- Disease, on 10/18/2008, -1/+6Windows XP took me half an hour to install. That's not including formatting and installing drivers afterward to get the system to be usable.
- inactive, on 10/18/2008, -0/+5All the time, thats why they finally implemented the feature
- biki73, on 10/18/2008, -1/+6does anyone know if new version will solve problems with ATI graphics cards?
so far i'm stuck with 60hz without 3d acceleration on x1650
it's quite annoying. - inactive, on 10/18/2008, -0/+5You're obviously not a programmer.
- secrity, on 10/18/2008, -2/+7Because that is the PROPER way to admin a *nix box -- and most Linux distros have you set up a user account during installation.
I find it a bit odd that Ubuntu doesn't set up a root account, it wants admins to use sudo for each command rather than logging in as a user and then su'ing into root. - lilSears, on 10/18/2008, -3/+7Every time there's a new release, I pray they include a fancy eye candy theme in secret that wasn't in beta as was promised.
- weizbox, on 10/18/2008, -1/+5Convert to Ubuntu from what distro? Any Ubuntu-specific features that caught your eye that others just didn't have?
Just curious... every time I ask I seem to get dugg down into oblivion without any answers :/ - Surkow, on 10/18/2008, -0/+4If you are having issues with others having you type commands to help you, you might want to read the following website about using a terminal:
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/terminal
"More importantly, it makes it easier for others to help you. If you're on the Ubuntu Forums (or any kind of online help venue), it's a lot easier for someone to say, Here, paste this command in the terminal than to describe in detail what you should click on, and then what to click on in the subsequent dialogue. In fact, you don't even need to type at all. If someone gives you a command to type in, just copy it and paste it into the terminal."
I'd like to add that most issues can be solved without ever using a terminal. - Spr0k3t, on 10/18/2008, -0/+4The only windows application I ever purchased was Directory Opus... it has the ability to use tabs. I've never used them. YMMD.
- inactive, on 10/18/2008, -0/+4Yea, that claim is completely ignorant for the author to make. "Well, we have already seen perfect hardware detection," maybe on his setup but that's definitely not universal.
Wireless is improving more and more, but it's no where near a non-issue. - Vadi0, on 10/18/2008, -0/+4It'll automatically tell you that you can upgrade when 8.10 is out, don't worry. Then you just press the button and it upgrades.
- effinboy, on 10/18/2008, -0/+3wait for official release, open update manager, and click upgrade!
- inactive, on 10/18/2008, -0/+3The "sudo" command is one of the main reasons why Linux is generally more secure than Windows. It's no secret Windows runs everything at the Administrator level for normal users, excluding guest accounts of course. That's one of the main reasons why viruses and spy-ware flourish so well in the system, they're run at such a level that they have nearly unlimited access.
In any Linux or Unix environment users are always told never to run anything above their access level unless it's completely necessary. For that reason, only very specific applications are run as root; mainly when you're performing maintenance or installations.
The "sudo" command isn't a burden, it's protection.
Systems without this method, like Windows, fall prey to intrusion much easier. There is a well known exploit in the task scheduler on XP due to this very reason. I can gain a system level shell within literally two seconds on most school, college, office and home computers from even a guest account at times. I've used the trick to circumvent group policy on many occasions, as well. - haterofps3, on 10/19/2008, -0/+3Not a Linux Guru but with hardy I had nothing but issues trying to get my wireless to work properly.
In Ibex after the update my wireless card worked perfectly. It also recognized my Graphics card and even gave me access to the volume keys on my laptop something that ubuntu didn't do before(kubuntu did though).
With wine becoming ever more mature and ubuntu continuing to grow at this pace it wont be long till my desktop joins my laptop.
The only problem I had was it did not want to resize my XP partition and allow me to dual boot, I am sure this will change in time. - priegog, on 10/18/2008, -2/+5Wow... that is one small hard drive he's got there...
Anyways, I'm really loving the new theme... 2 weeks ago we all tought it would be the ugliest ubuntu ever.
edit: Why on earth are the installer's screenshots done in a different theme? Hmmm I guess he just ripped them off the beta homepage. - inactive, on 10/18/2008, -1/+4I will be waiting for the official release, I just wanted the info in advance :p
Thanks!
if only my x-fi was supported so i could actually use my speakers :( - ethana2, on 10/18/2008, -0/+3I've found reporting bugs to be more effective than just hoping they go away.
- harmlessdrudge, on 10/18/2008, -0/+3See also these first impressions http://wombatdiet.net/2008/10/03/ubuntu-810-beta-f ...
- paridoth, on 10/18/2008, -0/+3I like how he sais its not worth the effort to configure the private folder when its just a few commands ... dude must not have had to try to get broadcom wireless working back in the Warty Warthog days
- inactive, on 10/18/2008, -0/+3Same here. I'm always opening multiple windows when I'm doing Web development. Usually one for each directory: images, scripts, etc. It'll be nice to have them consolidated into a single instance, even with dual monitors that's a lot of lost screen real estate when you have a text editor, browser and error message window open all at once.

- robvdl, on 10/18/2008, -0/+3The biggest problem with Intrepid, which he does not seem to mention, is Network Manager 0.7 does not allow static IP's at all. Something I noticed months and months ago and never got fixed, now it is listed as the 3rd known listed bug when you download the BETA and Intrepid will be released soon. Playing around with the "Auto eth0" connection is futile, because NM just resets if after a reboot, adding another connection with static IP is futile too, it just does not give you a static IP no matter what you try (it appears to, but doesn't) and just connects to "Auto eth0" automatically on boot. Editing the /etc/network/interfaces file is pointless too... unless you completely disable network manger from /etc/rc[x].d, something I had to do in the end.
If this doesn't get fixed in time, and I don't have my hopes up for this one, this will be a huge disaster for Intrepid, anyone that requires a static IP will have nightmares setting their network up, and will have to get their hands dirty in the terminal to disable NM completely and manually edit their /etc/network/interfaces file. In New Zealand, that is anyone with a direct Telstra cable connection, which requires static IP.
In my opinion, this is so bad that NM 0.7 should have never been bundled with Intrepid, they would have been better of using 0.6, as it "just works".
Another bug, is if you use tabs in nautilus, the scrollbar keeps disappearing. I hope this one gets fixed on time too, otherwise I can't really use tabs in it's current state. - mike23w, on 10/18/2008, -0/+3Are suspend/hibernate/resume working reliably on ubuntu laptops now?
- rollerboy, on 10/18/2008, -0/+3I love Ubuntu, but for the love of God improve those horribly long boot times.
- weizbox, on 10/18/2008, -1/+4'Ubuntu and Linux in general always seem to have trouble with things like wireless and Bluetooth because of proprietary/driver reason. It's a big step forward because it works out of the box.'
Stop perpetuating lies.. please. SOME Bluetooth and SOME WiFi devices work out of the box, but not all... and even with some hardware, it won't work at all.
'There was absolutely nothing wrong with the Bluetooth/Wireless - it worked exactly as it should - so why should it get anything LESS than 10/10?'
Because this isn't the case for everyone. If it worked for everyone, with all hardware, than yes.. it should get a 10/10 since there isn't any room for improvement (except for perhaps power consumption, memory usage/general efficiency, etc)
Wifi Cards supported:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Wireles ...
There would be no need for this page if the support for WiFi was truly 10/10. - Optimaximal, on 10/18/2008, -0/+2Do you know the great thing? If you want Konqueror & the whole KDE shebang, you install Kubuntu.. You want a simpler easier to use interface like Gnome, install Ubuntu.
What's the point slating one for lacking in features when its counterpart exists in an equally easy to install form when they both exist to serve different markets - Ubuntu for home users just 'discovering' linux, Kubuntu for power users who want to break it easily.
Oh wait, did you just want to play Angry Internet Man? Sorry, do carry on :) - Zylog, on 10/18/2008, -1/+3«I chose mine ... of course.»
— aw, come on! You know everyone does it ;).
I have been using Ibex on my laptop for the past two weeks. For some odd reason, after installing eclipse, package manager kept throwing out an error that i have broket packages. Checked in apt, and there aren't any. Hope this bug gets fixed. -
