- kettlechips, on 09/07/2008, -4/+62Dear god is that ugly.
- sirhomer, on 09/07/2008, -1/+35The horrible theme in that screen shot is actually a bug. You see that theme specifically if you have Compiz disabled.

No, the new Intrepid theme has not been decided on yet either. If you are interested in joining in the conversation or contributing artwork towards Intrepid, please join the Ubuntu artwork team's mailing list. - schestowitz, on 09/07/2008, -3/+31Why doesn't Canonical pick one of the many wonderful themes from gnome-look? Sure, ti's taste-dependent, but the default looks bland to me. Themes (looks) mean the /mos/ the people due to first impressions.
- RubberBinder, on 09/07/2008, -1/+24It's an optional window border decoration called "simple" that comes bundled with Ubuntu. It is most definitely not the official theme of Ubuntu 8.10.
- fatas, on 09/06/2008, -6/+26Another awesome job by Softpedia
The windows title bars look horrible, something from 1995 Macs. - bfob, on 09/07/2008, -2/+18It just looks like 8.04, Whats the major update?
- emblemparade, on 09/07/2008, -0/+12Read the article, and you will realize that this is a bug, not the real default theme, which is identical otherwise to Ubuntu's current version.
That said, I think it's stubbornly stupid for Softpedia to include screenshots with this bug. - JohnnyKdiggs, on 09/07/2008, -0/+11Softpedia image galleries really need navigation links. You know -- next, previous, stuff like that.
- mvent2, on 09/07/2008, -0/+9If anyone bothered to read the article, you can see that this is not the default theme, the human-murrine theme didn't install properly in this alpha in this case.
- Zaneris, on 09/07/2008, -2/+11This is why I show people this http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxfSwzhSn1c&fmt=18 as opposed to default screenshots...
- ToadX, on 09/07/2008, -2/+12Agreed. I can't believe this made the front page.
- demizer, on 09/07/2008, -0/+7Don't get me wrong, thats cool and all, but it looks like just like the other 1000 videos on youtube of people moving windows around in Ubuntu with compiz.
- srturner47, on 09/07/2008, -1/+8Thanks for assuaging my fears. That title bar is nasty! :)
- psion01, on 09/07/2008, -0/+7No offense, Zaneris, but I'm not impressed by that. At least not most of it, and I'm using Hardy right now. All we saw was a few eye-candy effects used repeatedly and strung together to music. I've seen a couple demos like that on YouTube, but I'd like to see more meat. Something like, here's databasing and word processing (show OpenOffice), here's video editing (show Cinelerra), here's 3D modeling (show Blender), here's gaming (help me out here), with some good Compiz effects transitioning to show all this going on at the same time.
And what's with wobbly windows? Does anyone like that effect, or is it just neat because it's new? - Orbity, on 09/07/2008, -0/+6File Browser TABS. Now that's a good idea.
- cmost, on 09/07/2008, -0/+5Ahem, in four plus years has Ubuntu wavered from this "simple, functional, and stable theme?" No. When Edgy was about to be released, there were many ruminations about an innovative new look for Ubuntu...that never happend. Then came Feisty and Gutsy with no change to the brown and orange theming. When Hardy was about to be released, once again...rumors were rampant about a radical new look, since 8.04 was to be designated LTS. Again, we were disappointed with more of the same ol' same ol'. Ubuntu hasn't had a major revision to its overall look and feel since its inaugural release way back in 2004. Google screenshots of every major release of Ubuntu and you'll be hard pressed to distinguish them from each other. You're mistaken if you think they're suddenly going to spring an awesome, innovative new theme on us right before the launch.
- Sokkratez, on 09/07/2008, -0/+5The irony of "your a ***** retard" never gets old, no matter how many posts I read. Thanks!
- Vasto, on 09/07/2008, -1/+5Eh, I'm not impressed. Nothing has really looked like it's changed visually, and the article doesn't go in depth enough about the kernel update.
- duckyinc, on 09/07/2008, -1/+5Did anything change?
- srg13, on 09/07/2008, -0/+4I don't know if Canonical even has a design team - I mean, hardly anything in the theme changes from version to version...
- evanct, on 09/07/2008, -1/+5i think the canonical graphic design team needs a few lessons in style.
colors that aren't orange or brown, a system font that isn't obnoxiously wide, some gradient/shiny eye candy here and there, SOMEthing to give the impression that it was designed in this decade... is that so much to ask for? - Nouman6, on 09/07/2008, -2/+6Maybe the design team didn't get that tiny memo....
I mean like what, 5000 people don't like the look of it? Easily overlooked.
/sarcasm - geekdw, on 09/07/2008, -1/+5it looks..........the same!
- insllvn, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3Hey! I am using that theme right now (albeit in different colors) you insensitive clod!
- Vadi0, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3Actually I read that it's a bug. If you click on the same theme it'll then reload the title bar properly.
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3Linux rules even though someday I plan on getting a Mac. I've been using Ubuntu for a while and overall it's cool and pretty simple to use. I like the free games and stuff. They need a new color scheme though! I'm not feelin' that brown/orange look at all lol.
- Visceral, on 09/07/2008, -3/+6Ubuntu just stopped trying when it comes to not looking like crap. Ubuntu started out with so much promise and it's visually just gone down the crapper while just about everyone and their mother keeps coming out with better looking themes (*****, even the official team at Ubuntu had a better one that Shuttleworth ***** on) and nothing ever gets done. d+
- mrynit, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3Its about ubuntu not the linux kernel. check the kernel change logs http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/testin ...
I'm glad they are using a very new kernel, 8.04 is stuck on 2.6.24 - jasmus, on 09/07/2008, -1/+4Seeing that it's in alpha, I'm assuming they are going with a simple, functional, and stable theme. When they know everything else is good, they'll probably decide on the eye candy.
- dtfinch, on 09/07/2008, -1/+4Still brown I see.
- Meep3D, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3I actually tried submitting some ideas but it was a total waste of time - nobody with any actual authority is on the Ubuntu Art mailing list. Also to stand even the slightest chance of getting anything submitted you need to design it, code it, package it and then they _might_ look at it.
It was pitched as being so 'non programmers' can submit ideas and I saw some _amazing_ ideas, but they just disappeared into the ether as nobody did anything about them. - raydeen, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3The brown has grown on me. I kinda like the one new suggested theme that I've seen that had a wood grain background. Reminds me of my old Atari. :)
- Sabretou, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3I am interested in the performance increase... I do have an old and dusty Pentium III machine.
- Sabretou, on 09/07/2008, -2/+5I was hoping they would scrap the naming scheme.
- mikedoth, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3Hrm, the only cool addition seems to be the addition of tabs in the file manager. I like this but there needs to be more... I still want a a drive manager, not partitioning tool like gparted, I need something that will edit fstab as well. This is still a turn off for folks who rely on managing systems from a gui only.
- chazuk, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3Why don't you ***** off? Keep spamming the same *****.....
- travis6690, on 09/07/2008, -9/+11I was hoping for Wanking Walrus...
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -1/+3I was hoping for the Ignorant Iguana.
- flatfish, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2Thank you srg13 !
I am new to Gnome and Ubuntu being a KDE/PCLinuxOS refugee.
I'm learning, albeit slowly :(
I will take your advice!
. - jamesdew, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2everything in TABS i want my life organised in tabs, if it was good before add some tabs and it will be even better
- demizer, on 09/07/2008, -2/+5I think there was something wrong with the menu bar or something. Some pixel was out of place, so 20 screen shots were taken to show how going through each menu affects the placement of the pixel.
Seriously, what's the point? - srg13, on 09/07/2008, -0/+2Making themes is fairly difficult, but if you only want to install a theme in Gnome, go to System -> Appearance and drag the theme file into the thumbnails window... You can even just drag a download link from a web browser into it and it will automatically install the theme.
- roysorlie, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1I can't wait till we get tabs in nautilus, opening everything in new windows in horribly annoying.
Now with that fixed, all I need to do is figure out how to when I click on a video file, it opens up in the same VLC window, and not open a new one :p - veruus, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1gedit isn't GUI enough for you?
- knopper67, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1TABS TABS TABS
Seriously, who doesn't like tabs? - psion01, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1I guess. I had a moment of surprise when I first saw it, but then I started wondering, "Why do I need that?" and the cool balloon lost all its air. It's just me, I suppose.
Good luck with the video. I'm thinking about having a go at it myself, but I only just downloaded Cinelerra the other night ... you're obviously a bit ahead of me on the video editing with Linux curve right now. - jbrown101st, on 09/07/2008, -2/+3Not what i was hoping for it to look like...
- martalli, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1For people who saw it last year and subsequently disabled it, I think its lost its luster. In fact, thinking about it right now reminds me of how the combination of wobbly windows and sticky edges annoys me.
- mattyrash, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1Hmm looks a lot like Hardy (not including the background). It would be cool if the developers looked at some of the darker more organic themes people have been mocking up.
