- straylight51, on 06/28/2008, -5/+126I love how I don't have to wait 5 years for a new version of my operating system :-)
- scy1192, on 06/28/2008, -1/+79Can't wait for Ubuntu Adjective Animal
- inactive, on 06/28/2008, -4/+487 years and counting for me :(
***** it, i'm gonna take the linux plunge, with a stable version of course. - Stroggoth, on 06/28/2008, -18/+59Well, if you are being honest with yourself, Intrepid Ibex (wtf?) isn't a an entirely new version like Vista, it is more like a service pack in Windows timescale.
- Endemoniada, on 06/28/2008, -3/+41I'd say a new Ubuntu release is quite a lot bigger than a Windows service pack. Every new release of Ubuntu adds lots of new features, new programs, new stuff as well as bug fixes and patches. Compared to service packs, which aren't supposed to contain any features at all, brand new programs even less, it's a huge difference.
I think a new Ubuntu is a lot closer to the Mac OS X release scheme. New software, new features, fixes, patches, tweaks and changes everywhere. - sloppychris, on 06/28/2008, -1/+37Has anyone heard news about the new theme?
- Seph7, on 06/28/2008, -1/+37Just incase anyone is wondering this is an ibex http://www.gvzoo.com/files/u2/Ibex.jpg
- handheldchimp, on 06/28/2008, -7/+43Wait...didn't they just come out with Horny Heron or something like that?
- mazza558, on 06/28/2008, -3/+29It's dark brown and orange at the moment. I'm sure it's not in any way final yet.
http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/29948/Screenshot.png - pvPicatta, on 06/28/2008, -3/+27I've been using ubuntu intrepid ipex since pre-alpha, and let me say this: DO NOT UPGRADE!
There are *very* few new features in intrepid ipex, and this is meant to only be used by developers and testers. Do *not* use this of production machines! Some things that don't work include nvidia non-free drivers. You will most certainly break your machine installing 8.10, and then be required to fix it by hand in the console.
As for 8.04, there is going to be ubuntu 8.04.1 released in a few days, which will include addresses to many common problems. In fact, 8.04.1 was the reason why the release of 8.10 alpha 1 was delayed.
Holy crap this comment system sucks nuts. - smacksaw, on 06/28/2008, -2/+24I think it's a testament to the excellent planning and engineering of Linux that you don't need to constantly tear down the OS and rebuild it from the ground up, but that you can make minor changes over time that have a cumulative effect.
- mossblaser, on 06/28/2008, -1/+22Quite, that is certainly one of the worst theme proposals I've seen, however the Ubuntu artwork mailing list is a good place to watch out for new themes and put forwards your thoughts.
- Disease, on 06/28/2008, -1/+22Do it.
- venuspcs, on 06/28/2008, -2/+19I cant wait for Jealous Jackal, Killer Kangaroo, Loose Lizard, Mighty Mouse, Naked Ninny, Objective Orangutan, Purple Possum, Rosy Rhino, Scrumptious Squid, Timid Tiger, Wild Walrus, Zealous Zebra
- mizike, on 06/28/2008, -2/+19indignant iguana would have been so awesome....
- zwaldowski, on 06/28/2008, -5/+22@mizike: Actually, Ubuntu animal releases are really equal to Apple's Cats. The April release can usually be equivocated to a Windows release, where October releases and LTS .1 releases are like service packs.
- ijwhelan, on 06/28/2008, -1/+17Again, ***** you.
- abyss20, on 06/28/2008, -2/+18moved last week from xp to ubuntu, so much better.
btw the new theme is actually preety nice, exept the color choice, but no problem changing brown ***** to something normal. - canthraxp, on 06/28/2008, -1/+15Blueprints:
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid - dudup, on 06/28/2008, -0/+13wow, such a long horn
- ha3er0, on 06/16/2009, -0/+13You don't have to install this. This is not for everyone. This is for developers, who would like to find problems with new features and changes.
Alpha ---> Beta ---> Final Release. - DonkeyKongJr, on 06/29/2008, -0/+13You do know what "alpha release" means, right? Why would anyone expect it to be bug-free or, heaven forbid, install it on a production machine? Yikes.
- stev3, on 06/28/2008, -0/+12Yours isn't?
- Daniel591992, on 06/28/2008, -3/+15Ughhh...
That's worse than the one they have now... - Stonekeeper, on 06/28/2008, -0/+12Rolling release distros mean even less of a wait...
- theaceoffire, on 06/28/2008, -0/+12How long must a Horny Heron wait to release???
- mizike, on 06/28/2008, -4/+16don't know who dugg you down, seems like a spot on analogy to me, it's not like every new animal name release is as big of a change as XP --> Vista or Tiger --> Leopard.
- Hctv19, on 06/28/2008, -0/+11Contrived Codename was a development release in between Breezy Badger and Dapper Drake
- ijwhelan, on 06/28/2008, -4/+15Hey, ***** you.
- manitoba98xp, on 06/28/2008, -1/+12Yuck! Maybe I'm alone, but I like having lighter window and UI styles than that, especially for a default! I think that would turn off a lot of new users – it makes a fine alternate style, but it should not be the default.
- sirhomer, on 06/28/2008, -3/+13Actually I'd argue that Ubuntu releases are more major then Windows releases. For instance, between Ubuntu 7.10 and 8.04, virtually every single piece of software on the system was updated with new features and bug fixes. That's not usually true in Windows, some go back as far as Windows 3.1, the Font Manager for instance.
- inactive, on 06/28/2008, -2/+12Ubuntu isn't the end all of linux distributions. Try something else out instead.
Opensuse or Fedora perhaps. - Hctv19, on 06/28/2008, -1/+10Did anybody read the blueprints? It looks like they are trying to set up some sort of centralized identity management, like an Active Directory replacement or even integration. Did anybody else read this the same way as I did? If they do something like that, I think this would definitely be a more enticing option for enterprise users.
- SQLserver, on 06/29/2008, -0/+8Pathetic idiot- What the hell are you talking about?
A. Word 03 and 07 run fine in ubuntu with minimum config.
B. You can open word documents and edit them by default in ubuntu. - GuyHersh, on 06/28/2008, -0/+8It was Fiesty Fawn.
- ReidFleming, on 06/28/2008, -3/+11I don't know exactly what you're talking about. So far, HH is great. I just this morning did a pen drive linux version of XUbuntu from a crappy old 2GB USB flash drive and am typing this comment up on it. From the time I put the live disk in until I was using the USB boot, call it maybe 20 minutes. Granted, there was another 20 minutes of installing updates but it went automatically and smooth as heck. About the only complaint I still have is a generic one that that's DVD playback. Sure, it's easy to get around but I don't like the fact that I have to.
- MikeFallopian, on 06/28/2008, -3/+11They promised me they'd take my suggestion of "Impotent Iguana" into consideration... bastards.
- aladrin, on 06/28/2008, -0/+8It's an alpha, don't get your panties in a wad. Unless you intend to actively help make it better, don't install alphas.
- tvanwyk, on 06/29/2008, -1/+9It's an alpha... chill out.
- thecwin, on 06/29/2008, -0/+8Kubuntu is an official sub-project of Ubuntu. Mark Shuttleworth reportedly uses Kubuntu rather than Ubuntu on his desktop. This means that any changes to Ubuntu are also relevant to Kubuntu. Indeed, they're both released on the same day and you can pick up a Kubuntu 8.10 alpha 1 here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/releases/intrepi ...
Remember though, despite that you may think that the development happening in KDE 4.1 is incredible, a lot of people aren't interested whatsoever because they like GNOME. Many people are excited about new GNOME distribution releases, particularly as Ubuntu is the most popular Linux distribution. So, the fact that KDE 4.1 is in development should in no way overshadow the GNOME-related news, just like how OS X news shouldn't overshadow Windows news just because OS X has had some "incredible development" happening.
However, I do agree that posting an alpha is a bit silly. - theaceoffire, on 06/29/2008, -0/+8Really? Everyone remembers Windows ME and Vista.
- ne0codex, on 06/28/2008, -0/+8Loose Lizard? eww...
- ReidFleming, on 06/28/2008, -2/+9Nice brain in your head. {clap, clap}
- Phocion55, on 06/29/2008, -0/+6This is the type of idiocy that doesn't even warrant a response. Ignore him.
- reddcell, on 06/28/2008, -3/+9Coming from a guy who has probably referred to himself as the 'Shermanator'
- balloonenstein, on 06/28/2008, -7/+13Am I the only one that likes the brown/orange theme? I really like this new theme too.
- jamie191817, on 06/29/2008, -0/+6Your a nob. But in response, Ubuntu integrate the fixes and new features into each distribution every 6 months. This way things can be fixed and updated at the same time, think of it as a rapid development strategy.
- sirhomer, on 06/28/2008, -0/+6It's been moving in that direction for awhile. PolicyKit in Hardy is a good example, it allows fine grained control over access on any given machine.
