- DCJoeDogaswell, on 12/01/2007, -2/+78I love Ubuntu, it's how I stay legal....OS-wise anyway.

- Toshibi, on 12/01/2007, -1/+57You use Automatix? Why?
- colonelxc, on 12/01/2007, -0/+51The Ubuntu devs made a huge mistake in their naming this time around.
- jjb123, on 12/01/2007, -2/+53Cranky Cat.
Quality Quail.
Manic Monkey.
I should work at Ubuntu. - raintheory, on 12/01/2007, -2/+50i think you mean *Automatix broke Gutsy", and not the other way around...
- dgath, on 12/01/2007, -1/+43You use Automatix? That's your main issue.
- sirhomer, on 12/01/2007, -0/+30This is a very early alpha version, so don't expect much.
- mrmacky, on 12/01/2007, -0/+28Wow, are you sure you got 7.10 not 6.10?
(Also stability is not Firefox or Ubuntu's fault, its the horribly implemented Flash, blame Adobe) - colto, on 12/01/2007, -0/+27You mean Canonical?
- Maybelline, on 12/01/2007, -1/+27are you high?
- Phocion55, on 12/01/2007, -0/+26Kinda funny seeing as how my WinXP box can never even get close to the uptime of my Ubuntu development box.

- chaos386, on 12/01/2007, -0/+21You're supposed to say that when someone comes up to _you_ and starts talking about Ubuntu, not waltz in to people talking about it amongst themselves.
- Jholder112233, on 12/01/2007, -0/+17Everyone knows *****, ***** & ***** aren't animals thats why. Therefore making him unsuitable for the job; he needs to learn some real animal names.
- eean, on 12/01/2007, -1/+18I hope they integrate their new init.d boot system. The current collection of bash scripts is a zombie out of the 90s. Its probably what I miss most from Gentoo, which has a decent init.d system.
- GeoBjorn, on 12/01/2007, -0/+16pardon?
- IamZed, on 12/01/2007, -12/+28Like when they named it Ubuntu?
- sauvaget, on 12/01/2007, -2/+18i'd check out your hardware first, if I were you.
- webcrumb, on 12/01/2007, -0/+14Cat and Monkey are too main-stream. Quail, however, will be an LTS release.

- inactive, on 12/01/2007, -0/+13next Ubuntu: Intriguing Impala
- stmiller, on 12/01/2007, -0/+13rhedrick: support of your wireless card has nothing to do with Ubuntu, or any distro. You should be complaining to the maker of the wireless card to support Linux better. Wireless card support is excellent in Linux from makers like Intel who make good Linux drivers for their stuff. Find a wireless card with an Intel chip and it will work, for example.
- stmiller, on 12/01/2007, -0/+12Yes, for over a year now. Now please stop posting this over and over. GIYF.
- Chandon, on 12/01/2007, -0/+11Either your hardware is utterly broken, or you're making stuff up - Ubuntu 7.10 has some minor issues (like any OS release), but not that many and none that are as bad as those.
- jdhore1, on 12/01/2007, -1/+12umm...I think i can say i have no idea what you're talking about. They're own version of init was merged in way back with 6.10 (called Upstart)...It may not be as easy to configure or as graphically appealing, but it does restart essential services (like hal, dbus, etc) automatically if they crash which i find VERY useful as in Debian and Gentoo, hald always was crashing for me on boot.
- toastgodsupreme, on 12/01/2007, -1/+11I was a little disapointed with the 7.x.
Things that were missing or could have been improved:
1. 5+ button mouse support (i like using my side buttons for web browsing, gaming, etc).
2. Mouse wheel support (was a bit of a shock not to be able to have the mousewheel bring up a scrolling dealie in a web browser).
3. Large install base. There are a LOT of unneeded packages installed by default. It should be a minimal install with base functionality that asks you "What else do you need?" instead of assuming we all want bluetooth support, dailup support, etc.
4. No preinstalled codecs. I know this somewhat goes against #3, but really, with all the media content available online now, the basics should be covered. Xvid, DivX, etc.
5. Lacked GUIs for many configuration options (not directly Ubuntu's fault, but still).
I dunno, I've just always been a fan of less. Keep ***** simple, and there's less chance for things to break. - jdhore1, on 12/01/2007, -0/+9In this Alpha, they're still using the 2.6.22 kernel from Gutsy i believe, but the kernel they'll be using for Alpha 2-Final will be 2.6.24 (which was merged in less than 24 hours before Alpha 1 was released...)
- inactive, on 12/01/2007, -1/+10I know they are done with the B's, but I demand Busy Beaver.
... and Crusty Crab would have been pretty sweet too. - Brashen, on 12/01/2007, -2/+11I see your point...but I am still going to bury you for spite.
- inactive, on 12/01/2007, -0/+9Not trying to be a jerk, but the 7.10 is significant. It implies it came out in October. 7.1 means it came out in January. They have an interesting way of doing the version numbers.
- nanostream, on 12/01/2007, -0/+8This only happens when I run the LiveCD, is that when you experience this?
- sqrt7744, on 12/01/2007, -2/+10I was blown away at just how *easy* filesharing is.... I right clicked on a folder I wanted to share over lan and selected "share folder..." from the menu. How much easier can it get? It even auto-installed samba and whatnot with ZERO tinkering from me. I know they have something on the todo list about simplifying filesharing, but I honestly don't know what they're on about.
- hyperair, on 12/01/2007, -1/+9You should also check to make sure that the CD you're using isn't an alpha release and is the final. Plus, isn't corrupted.
- superyounan1, on 12/01/2007, -2/+10theres not a whole lot to see here usability wise, new version of gimp, new kernel, maybe a slightly newer gnome i think? not much to get excited about, but the road map is impressive
- Tyr7BE, on 12/01/2007, -2/+10I tried it with Apple stories....doesn't work.
- IdanH14, on 12/01/2007, -1/+9Stop considering names and think of the features. I personally use Ubuntu 7.04 (relatively old version, I know) and I'm pleased. Everything is as good as I expected a real OS to be. When compared with Windows Vista/XP, the performances are better in every parameter. I'm sure the new version will a major success. At least among Linux users.
- inksmithy, on 12/01/2007, -2/+9There goes one.
OOH, that one scratched his balls, did you see that?
Bottom line, if you don't like what you see here, don't look at it. If you really feel strongly about it, block linux from your profile. People like ubuntu and they get excited about it. Enthusiasm isn't a crime yet. - dblbender, on 12/01/2007, -4/+11can't wait for it :D
- sirhomer, on 12/01/2007, -0/+7That will likely be in 8.10 (next release after Hardy), but we will see.
- jdhore1, on 12/01/2007, -0/+7There's gonna be so much more than that...Finally BulletProofX and that GUI X Config tool will work well, They're supposedly giving it a new theme as well as many other addons...It's not just new versions, it's other stuff too. Also, This should be a VERY stable release as this is the first LTS release in almost 2 years.
- sgoogle, on 12/01/2007, -0/+7Mouse wheel support is fine, and AFAIK, there are legal issues with pre-installing codecs such as DivX.
Ubuntu is aimed at the general public, so the large install base is a good idea. There are other distos if you want a minimal install. - mdshort, on 12/01/2007, -1/+8You should see some U.I. responsiveness increase because of the new scheduler in 2.6.23.
- jdhore1, on 12/01/2007, -1/+8Actually, i've used the new scheduler and i notice virtually no responsiveness difference between 2.6.23 and 2.6.22...but that's understandable as .23 was the first release with the scheduler...There are supposed to be massive improvements to it in 2.6.24 so when .24 comes out, we'll see the benchmarks.
- jdhore1, on 12/01/2007, -0/+7Good point, but .24 is only up to RC3, so it's not even close to ready...I'd even be willing to bet that 2.6.25 will be out before Hardy, but since Hardy is a LTS release, they're going with one they have time to stability patch to hell.
- jsully, on 12/01/2007, -0/+7Even with shared folders you need to create samba users with "smbpasswd -a username" - and they don't really tell you that anywhere.
