- z0mbie2099, on 01/24/2008, -1/+59WAAAH, dude now I'm definitely getting a Dell. HiEnd Linux Laptops without the Microsoft tax!
- benanzo, on 01/24/2008, -1/+50It's only been 8 months since the original Dell+Ubuntu announcement. This is a incredibly good sign that Dell's foray into the consumer desktop Linux world has been a success. They're now offering a state-of-the-art high-end laptop with Ubuntu, yes Ubuntu LINUX, preloaded. No more low-end workstations and basic laptops for us!
This is a major event in GNU/Linux history fellas. Everyone knows that Linux runs circles around the competition on low-end or older hardware which often times restricts our appeal to high tech enthusiasts. IMO this is a bigger breakthrough than the original annoucement of Dell offering Ubuntu. I was excited and happy then when I got my XPS 710n, but I'm thrilled now.
Dell, I commend you and guarantee that when I need a new laptop it'll be one of these beauties with Linux all the way. - adila01, on 01/24/2008, -0/+23Now that Dell is taking Ubuntu seriously as an economic opportunity, I believe that when Ubuntu 8.04 is released Dell will begin heavily customizing it just like it does with Windows such as adding its own desktop background and setting up its own repository and such.
- Scienceisfun, on 01/24/2008, -0/+22Awesome news. It would be even greater if I could ship the Vista disc that came with my M1330 back to Dell in exchange for an Ubuntu disc and $129. But that's just wishful thinking.
- truspect0r, on 01/24/2008, -4/+18Yeah, keep digging those apple stories, fanboy.
http://digg.com/users/Roger - reazal, on 01/24/2008, -1/+14Hopefully Dell won't add crappy softwares like in Windows.
- thushan, on 01/24/2008, -0/+12I've been running Gutsy on the M1330 since I got my unit in early october. However I havent been able to get the finger-print reader working as yet - its a bit fiddly. So if Dell support Ubuntu in M1330 thats awesome news for native support for the components in the lappy.
Here's whats supported (right now):

Thanks Dell:-) - praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+9I think it's something like $50 cheaper.
- mvent2, on 01/24/2008, -2/+10At least this way you're guaranteed everything will work well on Linux, like when you buy a Windows PC the OEM does their best to make sure everything works well for Windows. Plus what if you don't want Windows?
- chazuk, on 01/24/2008, -0/+8Looking at your history, you're a Mac fan, aren't you?
- elvenseven, on 01/24/2008, -1/+9nvm I googled.
- inactive, on 01/24/2008, -3/+10I'm a Linux guy and I hardly think that this has initiative been a "success", I don't think it has been a failure either. Its good that they are offering this option.
- evilregis, on 01/24/2008, -0/+7It's a matter of principle. Instead, you have a) not padded Microsoft's wallet and b) not padded Microsoft's marketshare, We have 4 computers here that MS would claim as their own but the first thing done when getting them home was wipe/install Linux.
It'd be nice to be able to buy a notebook and start using it right away. - RockinRoel, on 01/24/2008, -0/+5Dude! You're getting a Dell!
- penno, on 01/24/2008, -1/+6interesting times we live in, no? when ppl describe a computer as "gorgeous".
- sloppychris, on 01/24/2008, -1/+6Why isn't it a success?
- neko, on 01/25/2008, -0/+5It'll be the lost revenue from pre-installed crapware.
- CarzorStelatis, on 01/24/2008, -0/+5Exactly. Dell isn't providing drivers because Dell doesn't own the code - it would have to persuade/bully Lexmark to create Linux drivers for them. Solution: buy a different printer.
- REsplin, on 01/24/2008, -0/+5why spain?
why not? - rocktorrentz, on 01/24/2008, -0/+4Just upgraded the Ubuntu XPS to the same specs as the cheapest Vista one and here is the result:
£598.99 with Vista Home Premium
£698.00 with Ubuntu 7.10
Is it just me or is there something screwed up about that? If I was going to get one of these today (which I'm not but I might in the summer before I go to Uni), I'd just get the Vista one and install the *nix distro of my choice (which happens to not be Ubuntu). Here are the screenshots to prove my point:

- PhairOh, on 01/24/2008, -0/+4Because no one suspects the Spanish Inquisition!
- YamiJim, on 01/24/2008, -0/+4well, like some/most other *buntu enthusiasts i am a vindictive prick and would rather spend 100 extra bucks and not put any cash in M$'s pocket.
- vertexoflife, on 01/24/2008, -0/+4EXPECTS, not suspects.
- srg13, on 01/24/2008, -0/+4I don't care so much about saving money - it's more about not contributing money to Microsoft and not being counted as their market share.
- sprash, on 01/24/2008, -0/+4Hmm... German Store (same specs of course):
Vista Home Premium: 949,00 €
Ubuntu Edition version: 908,99 € - oobuntu, on 01/24/2008, -0/+4http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/73961/Make_U ...
Make_Ubuntu_laptops_cheaper_than_Windows_laptops
vote on this and let dell know about it - Hedegaard, on 01/24/2008, -0/+4You could have done that - but you have to do it before you start using Vista.
- bishonen, on 01/24/2008, -0/+4Nice, nice, nice. Now I can get some proper drivers for my 1330.sw33t! Good on you dell.
- oobuntu, on 01/24/2008, -1/+4looking at the inspiron 6400 i have the choice of the following :
linux, 512mb ram , 80gb hard drive
vista, 1024mb ram, 120gb hard drive
same specs otherwise, both £329 each.
Where's the deal in that? Buy vista, get a better spec machine for your money? - craigsfans, on 01/24/2008, -0/+3Did u know that in china, Dell can't sell computers without a stupid vista license? I can't even downgrade to XP license for my XPS 1210. so I have to say this line again:"removed vista after the first boot, and UBUNTU rocks"
- secleinteer, on 01/24/2008, -0/+3That's something I don't want though. Why can't they leave it with the default Ubuntu installation except for the additional drivers? It's not like I'm going to keep any of their settings.
- chazuk, on 01/24/2008, -0/+3Starting today, customers in Germany, United Kingdom, France and now Spain.....
Not just Spain..... WTF is wrong with Spain? - hellraiserbob, on 01/24/2008, -0/+3Well this seems great at first glance and you seem to be saving £100, but then you realise that the ubuntu version comes with 1Gb less RAM, poorer shared graphics and a smaller HDD, your better off buying the Vista one and then just installing Ubuntu.
- elvenseven, on 01/24/2008, -0/+3The Dell looks good: http://xataka.com/images/2007/06/dellxpsm1330-0.jp ...
- inactive, on 01/24/2008, -0/+3Believing is simply a belief, an idea. You don't need validity for ideas or beliefs for them to happen.
- sirhomer, on 01/24/2008, -2/+5That's a good point that is ignored. Most of the time the list price of the Vista machine is less expensive, however though if you use a coupon with these laptops you save around $50 off the Vista model overall.
At this point though I think many people don't think there is any value add at all for Vista. - yadame, on 01/24/2008, -4/+7But the real point is that the hardware has been tested with Linux. No worries about that one piece of hardware that doesn't work/no drivers
- thomashauk, on 01/24/2008, -0/+3Still nice if you do something remotely intencive
- Sawta, on 01/24/2008, -0/+2I'm not sure if bulegene was saying that there's anything WRONG with Spain, but rather that it just seemed like some what of an odd choice. Perhaps it's different in other countries, but in America, we don't usually get to hear about exciting electronic releases from Spain..or just about any other country for that matter (it's actually pretty annoying to not hear about more international news), unless you get an international channel, of course.
- YamiJim, on 01/24/2008, -0/+2is that all really needed? one of my main loves of Kubuntu is that i dont need an expensive lappy to boot/run fast and look prettyfull with the eye candies and whatnot. to each his own i guess.
- Dongvid, on 01/24/2008, -0/+2OP obviously doesn't use linux. that many plusses is obscene.
- jleems86, on 01/24/2008, -1/+3They're probably still trying to recoup the cost of creating a linux-support structure, additional product testing, and the factory alterations that they needed to install ubuntu and bypass the windows related portions of the assembly line. I'm sure that as more people buy linux, the cost will go down below the windows PC's.
- cduquette, on 01/25/2008, -0/+2I wish they offered this 3 months ago when I bought my XPS. Great laptop!
- Scienceisfun, on 01/24/2008, -0/+2I'm just ticked at the fact that I had to pay for Vista in the first place, especially when the first thing I did was uninstall it.
- RockinRoel, on 01/24/2008, -0/+2I didn't know Dell's got a silly Web 2.0-style logo now?
- TieDNKnotZ, on 01/24/2008, -0/+2I want a copy of that Ubuntu install to check it out on my m1330!!!!
Running Linux Mint right now. - tnoy, on 01/24/2008, -0/+2I wish more people googled before they asked
- CarzorStelatis, on 01/24/2008, -0/+2RTFA. Not available in the US yet.
- weizilla, on 01/24/2008, -0/+2"Starting today, customers in Germany, United Kingdom, France and now Spain can purchaseUbuntu Linux 7.10 with built-in DVD playback on the XPS 1330n (in addition to the previously-released Inspiron 530n desktop system. "
purchase Ubuntu? Isn't it free??? -
