It's not like they can just go to drivers.nvidia.com and get PS3 Linux drivers -- there's alot of manual work with relatively sparse documentation.

With recent cracks to the GPU everything is now available for Linux on PS3. The XBMC is seen by many os the best media center software available in the world. The problem is the hardware (xbox's) is old and outdated.

      The beauty of a games console is all the hardware is the same, this makes it very easy to program for. The PS3 is the perfect replacement for my old Xbox as the heart of my media center.

      • mtekk, on 12/09/2007, -3/+5The problem is most people have ***** ass computers (think Celerons or P4s) with even ***** graphics cards (Integrated or something on the lines of a Geforce 6200), and then run with a ***** load of bloat (Anything AOL, and all that other crap PC's come preloaded with now) that don't have a chance in hell at being able to run any game with an acceptable frame rate. That's why they buy consoles.

Well they could spend less than half of that on an upgrade. Get a Core 2 duo, 2 gigs of ram, HD2K series video card. Which would blow a ps3 away. A computer like that would be about 4 generations ahead of the ps3. And less than half the money.

          Its a scam. Sony just wants you to buy their hardware to lock you into buying games that only work on their operating system to make money off of you.

Most of the time they shell out for a completely new system that a sales person recommends and it still comes with ***** on it.

            Remember that you can't just upgrade any system to a C2D system, first off your case/PSU needs to be able to handle it (especially since you'll most likely need to upgrade the motherboard). Most systems with P4s can't be directly upgraded to a C2D system, and even if they could you probably won't want to do it.

            Why the hell would you get a HD2K card? The 8000 series beats it in just about everything. Besides the HD3K series is now out.

They've got proprietary mother boards with ***** up heatsink mount points...you can easily replace your P4 for a Core 2 Duo, but you'll just toast it when it doesn't fit the Dell mounts.             Personally I only play rts and fps, but if I really wanted to play a different kind game all i would have to do it double click the icon, plug in my controller, and play.

My usual centrino and AMD processors aren't quite cutting it, but with the 6 cores on the Cell, I can make my code run 6 times faster with parallelization. And other such uses. In short, if I have such a powerful machine, why waste it on just playing games and movies? I'd want to make as much use of it as possible.

      and Linux is NOT pre installed on the PS3... you need to format the PS3 as soon as you buy it to make a second partition for your Linux OS, or if you've already had one for a while backup all yer crap, format, then copy it back over...

        See "Everyday Shooter". Indie production, kicks ass. With better access to hardware 100's of apps like this would spring up... and people would pay for them.
        Case in point: XBMC in the Xbox. The only reason I bought an Xbox and ended up buying games for it.

This is to stop people from exploiting the hardware and opening the device for homebrew/pirated software. You will not lose the XMB and settings, since these are in the flashrom, nor will you lose the friends list, since this is on PSN. However all downloaded games, saves, virtual memory cards, music, videos and pictures will be lost if not backed up.
      • emgonzalez, on 12/09/2007, -0/+12if you have a big enough FAT32 USB drive, you can backup _everything_ using one of the XMB menus and, once you finish installing linux and boot back onto XMB, then restore it all back to exactly how it looked when you took the snapshot. I did it about 6 months ago and saved savegames, pics, vids and all my stuff.

      I haven't seen it work yet, but i've heard it's quite silent and an OK blue-ray player.

      The main reason i didn't buy one yet, is - all my friends have 360s so there's plenty of games to borrow . (and i like the 360's controller better)

    One tip for a faster experience is to mount the swap partition on a fast memory card. 256MB ram is not enough for heavy OpenOffice or Firefox usage.

In the article one sets the ubuntu as default so that there is the option at the beginnin to boot back into the regular ps3 os. After booting into it, all games and normal functions of the ps3 are available - nothing has changed except a little smaller hard drive.

  • senatorpjt, on 12/09/2007, -1/+1Can you install the Cell SDK on Ubuntu yet? I'd prefer using Ubuntu, but as of yet, afaik it doesn't work with the Cell SDK. (You need to use YDL which pretty much sucks)
  • pencilneck, on 12/09/2007, -1/+4I tired this whole mess last week. Getting Linux to install on the PS3 isn't all that hard. When you partition your hard drive, you will loose all of your saved games, music, videos, and photos that you've saved onto the hard drive. Copy what you want to save onto a thumb drive or flash card.

    The issue I've run into is the wireless doesn't work under Linux, something happened when Sony upgraded the PS3 to version 2.xx. Also, depending on how you have your TV hooked up, you may have to do a couple of command line tweaks to get the the resolution correct so you can see the whole screen instead (as was the case for me). But everything has a pink-ish hue to it.

    There are guides on how to fix the 2.xx wireless issue, but I never could get them to work. As with most things Linux... I follow the guides step-by-step and then they don't work for whatever reason.

    There isn't support for all hardware.... the joystick isn't supported and it doesn't take full support of the graphics.

    I'm going to sit this one out for a while and wait until there is a more "turn key" install just for the PS3 that actually works 100% out of the box.

I made the mistake of buying a 360 thinking it would get cracked quickly but that never really worked out. (the sad part is I had the exploitable firmware at one point, should have never updated)

From what I understand there is a hypervisor restricting access to the RSX, which would severely limit the consoles ability to do anything like HD movie rendering or compiz/beryl.

I own a 360 for the reason that it hit the market first, but I'm rather disappointed i am unable to browse the net or do basic computer functions. I bought a game system to stop the upgrade game (new video card every year, new processor every year) just to keep up. 360 does have usb keyboard support so why not add a damn browser, since a optional operating system will not happen. Imagine that *****, Linux on a MS gaming console... never.

    YellowDog claims to be completely optimized for the PS3 but I guess it will lack the updates that Ubuntu might have.

    Overall this is totally worth doing, you can even run emulators for NES/SNES/Genesis/GBA/etc and turn PS3 into an uber game system along with using it as a computer.

The fanbois will go off on their retarded little tirades, but I think it's definitely a step in the right direction - it's time consoles had more scope than just playing games - it's why I haven't bought one since the PSX.
