- JammoBlammo, on 12/09/2007, -2/+146If the Linux geeks could install Linux on a shower curtain, they would.
- inactive, on 12/09/2007, -9/+147The digg people odn't know whether they should praise the PS3 for running Linux or to bash for being made by Sony.
- KezG, on 12/09/2007, -4/+86Dugg. I'm going to make a huge ass linux on PS3 guide with how to do this and that, how to use it as a media centre, etc. soon.
- epimer, on 12/09/2007, -1/+51Is that a challenge?
- einfeldt, on 12/09/2007, -2/+45@ KineticShampoo:
People like to install Ubuntu on their PS3 out of scientific curiosity. They like to learn how to do new things. - skoles, on 12/09/2007, -0/+42You have a media center that can play Blue-Ray movies and HD-DVD rips, music, internet and all that other fun stuff.
- joeleslie, on 12/09/2007, -0/+33Yes. Get to it.
- KineticShampoo, on 12/09/2007, -20/+52What is the use of having Ubuntu on your PS3? No seriously, I'm not being sarcastic; I thought consoles were for gaming. :S
- chazuk, on 12/09/2007, -0/+25It supports all ps3 hardware AFIK. Except GFX acceleration of course. :(
- 89vision, on 12/09/2007, -0/+25because Windows wont run on ppc.
- JayD16, on 12/09/2007, -3/+27Does it support the built in wireless?
- roebeet, on 12/09/2007, -1/+25Shower curtains should be about choice.
- zaffir, on 12/09/2007, -0/+23The PS3 is by far the least expensive way to get to play with IBM's Cell processor. For computer nerds - and especially parallel/supercomputing nerds - it's a wet dream come true.
- kazamx, on 12/09/2007, -0/+21Linux on a PS3 is just the core of what is to come. XBox Media Server is being ported to Linux as we speak. With recent cracks to the GPU everything is now available for Linux on PS3. The XBMC is seen by many os the best media center software available in the world. The problem is the hardware (xbox's) is old and outdated.
The beauty of a games console is all the hardware is the same, this makes it very easy to program for. The PS3 is the perfect replacement for my old Xbox as the heart of my media center. - Breepee, on 12/09/2007, -6/+26Praise where praise is due I'd say. Good luck running homebrew on anything Microsoft.
- jam02, on 12/09/2007, -1/+20on a ppc architecture? It's been done through emulation, but it was ridiculously slow.
- brandonhines, on 12/09/2007, -0/+19There was an official Linux kit for the PS2. Sony deserved praise then too.
- emgonzalez, on 12/09/2007, -0/+17why not accelerated graphics still? I would like to understand.
Also, I wish somebody would port the x264 encoder for the cell architecture. I'd like to encode HD h264 real time! - ZenPirate, on 12/09/2007, -0/+15 There is no 3d graphics because Sony won't let developers into the RSX chip on the PS3. It's as simple as that.
- rkuchiki, on 12/09/2007, -0/+14To format a partition for linux you have to reformat the entire drive. You will not lose the XMB and settings, since these are in the flashrom, nor will you lose the friends list, since this is on PSN. However all downloaded games, saves, virtual memory cards, music, videos and pictures will be lost if not backed up.
- kazamx, on 12/09/2007, -0/+14Didn't I read on Diig a few days ago that someone has worked out a hack for that? If I remember right its all very complex at the moment, but in time it will be easy
- kinggimped, on 12/09/2007, -0/+14I think Sony really should be lauded for supporting Linux on their latest console. The fanbois will go off on their retarded little tirades, but I think it's definitely a step in the right direction - it's time consoles had more scope than just playing games - it's why I haven't bought one since the PSX.
- MiserJ, on 12/09/2007, -2/+16Virtual PC doesn't run on PS3
- subterfuge, on 12/09/2007, -0/+12i lol'd
- emgonzalez, on 12/09/2007, -0/+12if you have a big enough FAT32 USB drive, you can backup _everything_ using one of the XMB menus and, once you finish installing linux and boot back onto XMB, then restore it all back to exactly how it looked when you took the snapshot. I did it about 6 months ago and saved savegames, pics, vids and all my stuff.
- subterfuge, on 12/09/2007, -1/+13i use my ps3 for gaming only about half the time. the other half i have music playing, and i'm sometimes online with it. but that raises the question of whether there's any point to installing another operating system if i can already do those things.
- GothAlice, on 12/09/2007, -3/+15I already run Linux on my toaster and coffee machine...
- zwaldowski, on 12/09/2007, -0/+12Zero, right now. There's no GPU access.
- MWeather, on 12/09/2007, -0/+12https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormat ...
- skoles, on 12/09/2007, -0/+11The article mentions I won't lose my XMB partion and, hopefully, all my saves if I make a new partition. Is this true?
- smackafiyah, on 12/09/2007, -0/+11I just installed this on mine this past weekend, had to do a few tweaks to get wireless internet and the SAXXIS bluetooth working, but other than that, runs perfectly. Now back to playing my mame/snes/genesis roms on it now.
- BornSlacker, on 12/09/2007, -1/+12*Clearly* you've never used Ubuntu! It's genius.
- pennpaper, on 12/09/2007, -4/+15because windows is a rubbish piece of software that i've never paid for but am forced to use at work and school.
UBUNTU FTW. - TechCF, on 12/09/2007, -1/+12I have done this myself. 7.04 was no success, but 7.10 is.
One tip for a faster experience is to mount the swap partition on a fast memory card. 256MB ram is not enough for heavy OpenOffice or Firefox usage. - KezG, on 12/09/2007, -0/+11@people: just add me as a friend and I'll make a shout when the guide is done. Should be up just after crimbo. :)
- AntBing, on 12/09/2007, -0/+11You guess wrong.
- rimbaud, on 12/09/2007, -1/+11Virtual PC is as slow as s**t. It's virtually unusuable. Where's the block user button?
- Derfy, on 12/09/2007, -1/+11Someone needs to take a nap.
- Xanium4332, on 12/09/2007, -4/+14so true...
- porfitron, on 12/09/2007, -0/+9This is a great answer to those here asking WHY? Well, emulators, of course!
- Zamfir, on 12/09/2007, -0/+9... but I guess, sadly you are.
- einfeldt, on 12/09/2007, -1/+9@ databoy:
No, I think you might be mistaken. AFAIK, there is no Linux OS by default on the PS3. There were rumors that Sony was going to install Linux on it by default, but it actually runs a proprietary Sony OS. Please correct me if I am wrong, but I think I am correct. - TechCF, on 12/09/2007, -0/+8Well because the hypervisor is restricting access to the flashrom, cpu, memory and gfx card. This is to stop people from exploiting the hardware and opening the device for homebrew/pirated software. Think of the hypervisor creating a kind of virtual machine for you OS, but with direct hardware access for some devices.
- 89vision, on 12/09/2007, -0/+8yes, if Samba is configured correcty
- HerbSolo, on 12/09/2007, -0/+8i guess you meant that story:http://www.digg.com/playstation/Linux_3D_graphics_ ...
- Icetype, on 12/09/2007, -0/+8I saw that too-- They figured out how to access the GPU stuff, but it wasn't useful yet.
- inactive, on 12/09/2007, -0/+8Except it's still slow as balls.
They need to release the GFX access ASAP - amrush4th, on 12/09/2007, -1/+8Did file sharing work with other computers in the house? if so this might be nice just to access the media on my desktop already.
- MWeather, on 12/09/2007, -1/+8The PS3 IS a computer.
- inactive, on 12/09/2007, -1/+8Can you send a shout out to your friends when you have it up please? Appreciate what you want to do.
