- JayD16, on 12/09/2007, -3/+27Does it support the built in wireless?
- chazuk, on 12/09/2007, -0/+25It supports all ps3 hardware AFIK. Except GFX acceleration of course. :(
- rpgmaker, on 12/09/2007, -12/+1That's the main reason why I say that the Sony's homebrew intentions are always half-arsed, well, that and all the PSP firmware updates issues...
- Iwantawii, on 12/10/2007, -0/+2There's not half-arsed, the homebrew developers just don't have the resources necessary to interface with all the hardware quickly/easily. It's not like they can just go to drivers.nvidia.com and get PS3 Linux drivers -- there's alot of manual work with relatively sparse documentation.
- smacksaw, on 12/10/2007, -1/+3Dugg you up for mentioning that, but rpgmaker is still right. Guarding all of the hardware info is pretty halfassed to me. I mean...it's lke homebrew as a novelty more than anything else. Sure, you can crack passwords all day with your PS3, but I'd like to play some games on linux if you please.
- rpgmaker, on 12/10/2007, -0/+2@Iwantawii: You didn't get my point, I was referring to the Sony intentions of attract homebrew developers not the developers themselves. My bad, I wrote it wrong.
- Iwantawii, on 12/10/2007, -0/+2There's not half-arsed, the homebrew developers just don't have the resources necessary to interface with all the hardware quickly/easily. - kazamx, on 12/09/2007, -0/+14Didn't I read on Diig a few days ago that someone has worked out a hack for that? If I remember right its all very complex at the moment, but in time it will be easy
- Icetype, on 12/09/2007, -0/+8I saw that too-- They figured out how to access the GPU stuff, but it wasn't useful yet.
- HerbSolo, on 12/09/2007, -0/+8i guess you meant that story:http://www.digg.com/playstation/Linux_3D_graphics_ ...
- rpgmaker, on 12/09/2007, -12/+1That's the main reason why I say that the Sony's homebrew intentions are always half-arsed, well, that and all the PSP firmware updates issues...

- KezG, on 12/09/2007, -4/+86Dugg. I'm going to make a huge ass linux on PS3 guide with how to do this and that, how to use it as a media centre, etc. soon.
- einfeldt, on 12/09/2007, -6/+7Dugg! You go, KezG.
- MASTERPL, on 12/09/2007, -1/+8Can you send a shout out to your friends when you have it up please? Appreciate what you want to do.
- halfway, on 12/09/2007, -0/+5I would be highly interested in that. What distribution will you be focusing on?
- oomfoofoo, on 12/09/2007, -13/+1He's just going to find all of the current Linux on PS3 guides and change "Linux" with "ubuntu" and claim it as his own, like any other fanboy.
- diggingaround, on 12/09/2007, -1/+3Please make it work as PVR also... please!
- frieddonuts, on 12/09/2007, -1/+3There are no video inputs. That would require some serious hardware modding.
- bat-21, on 12/10/2007, -0/+3Not really. There are a lot of USB tuners.
- smacksaw, on 12/10/2007, -0/+3LOL no it wouldn't! It would require a driver for a USB device like my Hauppauge tuners.
- frieddonuts, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1Oh yeah good point. :) You win.
- frieddonuts, on 12/09/2007, -1/+3There are no video inputs. That would require some serious hardware modding.
- djgump35, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1could you shout me when you do?
I seen a guide before this one, but this one is way easier for installation. Having divx on this, would reall make things better for me.
- squirrelza, on 12/09/2007, -23/+6But my computer runs Linux already? :P
- einfeldt, on 12/09/2007, -6/+4heh, they are talking about putting Linux on a Play Station 3, which is a game console.
- squirrelza, on 12/09/2007, -6/+6That's the point I'm making. My computer could run Linux before PS3 :) Thanks captain obvious!
- rpgmaker, on 12/09/2007, -2/+5No, your point was to make it seem that the PS3 was a computer, which it is and that's what is cool about it.
- squirrelza, on 12/09/2007, -6/+6That's the point I'm making. My computer could run Linux before PS3 :) Thanks captain obvious!
- MWeather, on 12/09/2007, -1/+8The PS3 IS a computer.
- Tenoq, on 12/10/2007, -2/+1If an expensive, crippled and proprietary one. Actually, it's kinda like a Mac - but without the standard Intel HW. :P
- guruboyguru, on 12/09/2007, -6/+2Don't you guys know that a console is just a hard drive with games on it?
- rreadysetno, on 12/09/2007, -0/+3Lol, people don't get sarcasm.
- mathcreative, on 12/09/2007, -3/+3you forgot the fact that it's also got 8CELL PROCESSORS!!!

- Ataxia87, on 12/09/2007, -61/+15What about something useful, like XP?
- zapa, on 12/09/2007, -15/+9***** you
- Ataxia87, on 12/09/2007, -13/+2No, you. Hahah!
- Breepee, on 12/09/2007, -6/+3***** you more ;)

- jam02, on 12/09/2007, -1/+20on a ppc architecture? It's been done through emulation, but it was ridiculously slow.
- subterfuge, on 12/09/2007, -0/+12i lol'd
- unrealmp3, on 12/09/2007, -0/+5Wrong architecture.
- guruboyguru, on 12/09/2007, -2/+4What a retard.
- mvent2, on 12/09/2007, -0/+5Why bother? Windows is a waste on any computer.
- wilhel1812, on 12/09/2007, -5/+1Here's the list of the best OS's
1 mac
2 linux
104546 windows - GawtMilk, on 12/09/2007, -1/+1Windows XP was up and running on PS3s like the week it came out.
- zapa, on 12/09/2007, -15/+9***** you
- skidme, on 12/09/2007, -9/+147The digg people odn't know whether they should praise the PS3 for running Linux or to bash for being made by Sony.
- Xanium4332, on 12/09/2007, -4/+14so true...
- Breepee, on 12/09/2007, -5/+26Praise where praise is due I'd say. Good luck running homebrew on anything Microsoft.
- KayIslandDrunk, on 12/09/2007, -18/+6Thanks I do have great luck running my own apps in XP. Doesn't that fall into your category of "anything Microsoft"?
- rpgmaker, on 12/09/2007, -12/+3You mean like all that shareware out there?
- Atomic1fire, on 12/09/2007, -1/+1except anything microsoft is to generic sounding
you mean anything microsoft could make more money off of
like video game systems and mp3 players
windows allready has a large hardware base so microsoft cant preinstall anything withought creating its own pc
it cant do software because users want to install what they want on pc - P30online, on 12/09/2007, -4/+2Have you ever heard of the original Microsoft Xbox ?
http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/modules.php?name=Xbox_ ...- P30online, on 12/09/2007, -3/+1http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/modules.php?name=Xbox_ ...
- doctordbx, on 12/09/2007, -10/+0Yes.... XNA Game Studio anyone?
- Robbothehood, on 12/09/2007, -7/+0This is getting oldPS3 stories have been largely positive for the past month.
- djgump35, on 12/09/2007, -1/+3It'd be nice for Sony to not be third on the list on Digg, I believe it is the best of the three, nice to see that sony put price breaks behind it to get it in homes.
- thedragon4453, on 12/10/2007, -2/+1Yeah, they put price breaks because the PS3 was tanking.
- KineticShampoo, on 12/09/2007, -20/+52What is the use of having Ubuntu on your PS3? No seriously, I'm not being sarcastic; I thought consoles were for gaming. :S
- cajie, on 12/09/2007, -25/+19PS3 is not a console. It's a way of life.
- rpgmaker, on 12/09/2007, -1/+7Way of entertainment I would say.
- jamima69z, on 12/09/2007, -8/+2it currently fails at both imho.
- rpgmaker, on 12/09/2007, -1/+7Way of entertainment I would say.
- einfeldt, on 12/09/2007, -2/+45@ KineticShampoo:
People like to install Ubuntu on their PS3 out of scientific curiosity. They like to learn how to do new things.- madformadness, on 12/09/2007, -21/+4You don't need to put "@ KineticShampoo:" you ***** retard we have a reply system now dumbass.
- Derfy, on 12/09/2007, -1/+11Someone needs to take a nap.
- GawtMilk, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2@madformadness
No one uses it properly.
- madformadness, on 12/09/2007, -21/+4You don't need to put "@ KineticShampoo:" you ***** retard we have a reply system now dumbass.
- skoles, on 12/09/2007, -0/+42You have a media center that can play Blue-Ray movies and HD-DVD rips, music, internet and all that other fun stuff.
- jam02, on 12/09/2007, -8/+0It can't quite manage hd-dvd rips or blu-ray yet, I don't think. Hopefully it will in the future.
- MWeather, on 12/09/2007, -0/+12https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormat ...
- jam02, on 12/09/2007, -8/+0It can't quite manage hd-dvd rips or blu-ray yet, I don't think. Hopefully it will in the future.
- subterfuge, on 12/09/2007, -1/+13i use my ps3 for gaming only about half the time. the other half i have music playing, and i'm sometimes online with it. but that raises the question of whether there's any point to installing another operating system if i can already do those things.
- Breepee, on 12/09/2007, -1/+5You could toss out your PC'computer if you hook up a keyboard/mouse and good screen to the PS3 I suppose. The games are there, now the desktop and internet too.
- djgump35, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1If the browser with the playstation 3 is having memory problems displaying multiple windows, and a lot of content, isn't the same problem going to result on Linux?
- JammoBlammo, on 12/09/2007, -2/+145If the Linux geeks could install Linux on a shower curtain, they would.
- epimer, on 12/09/2007, -1/+49Is that a challenge?
- joeleslie, on 12/09/2007, -0/+32Yes. Get to it.
- GothAlice, on 12/09/2007, -3/+15I already run Linux on my toaster and coffee machine...
- gquaglia, on 12/09/2007, -2/+3Linux is god!
- Icetype, on 12/09/2007, -0/+6LMFAO Jammo. Good show.
- MattBD, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1Well, I've heard loads in the last ten years about computerised clothing being on the way, so why not a shower curtain? With the growth of plastic electronics, it could happen. Have the curtain as a screen and make it voice activated, and you could check your e-mail in the shower!
- bulltradamus, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1putting "Linux" on a shower curtian is about as difficult as putting tux on a shower curtian
- djgump35, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1But the shower curtain has a way better resolution skin of carmen electra, no particular reason of course.
- rockets, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1Hmmm... I can easily print the linux source code on my shower curtain.
- epimer, on 12/09/2007, -1/+49Is that a challenge?
- roebeet, on 12/09/2007, -1/+25Shower curtains should be about choice.
- kazamx, on 12/09/2007, -0/+21Linux on a PS3 is just the core of what is to come. XBox Media Server is being ported to Linux as we speak. With recent cracks to the GPU everything is now available for Linux on PS3. The XBMC is seen by many os the best media center software available in the world. The problem is the hardware (xbox's) is old and outdated.
The beauty of a games console is all the hardware is the same, this makes it very easy to program for. The PS3 is the perfect replacement for my old Xbox as the heart of my media center. - zaffir, on 12/09/2007, -0/+23The PS3 is by far the least expensive way to get to play with IBM's Cell processor. For computer nerds - and especially parallel/supercomputing nerds - it's a wet dream come true.
- zwaldowski, on 12/09/2007, -0/+6Mythbuntu. 'Nuff said.
- uziko, on 12/09/2007, -11/+3PCs are for running games. Game consoles are for running programs.
Oh wait I forgot both systems can do both of those things because they are all the same things but with different hardware.
What will it take for people to learn that a ps3/xbox360/wii are just crippled PCs that are more expensive. And they already have a more powerful ps3/xbox360/wii. Their pc.- mtekk, on 12/09/2007, -3/+5The problem is most people have ***** ass computers (think Celerons or P4s) with even ***** graphics cards (Integrated or something on the lines of a Geforce 6200), and then run with a ***** load of bloat (Anything AOL, and all that other crap PC's come preloaded with now) that don't have a chance in hell at being able to run any game with an acceptable frame rate. That's why they buy consoles.
- uziko, on 12/09/2007, -5/+1All they have to do it uninstall all that garbage like aol. And they were going to spend 600 dollars on a ps3. Well they could spend less than half of that on an upgrade. Get a Core 2 duo, 2 gigs of ram, HD2K series video card. Which would blow a ps3 away. A computer like that would be about 4 generations ahead of the ps3. And less than half the money.
Its a scam. Sony just wants you to buy their hardware to lock you into buying games that only work on their operating system to make money off of you.- mtekk, on 12/09/2007, -0/+4The average user (and console owner) doesn't uninstall the crap, and if they don't even do that how do you expect them to know how/what to upgrade? Most of the time they shell out for a completely new system that a sales person recommends and it still comes with ***** on it.
Remember that you can't just upgrade any system to a C2D system, first off your case/PSU needs to be able to handle it (especially since you'll most likely need to upgrade the motherboard). Most systems with P4s can't be directly upgraded to a C2D system, and even if they could you probably won't want to do it.
Why the hell would you get a HD2K card? The 8000 series beats it in just about everything. Besides the HD3K series is now out. - specialK16, on 12/09/2007, -1/+2So what? I love to lay down in my bed and play my games on my TV, that's why I love consoles, even while I could do the same with a computer.
- GawtMilk, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1Yeah, uziko, great plan. Tried upgrading a Dell lately? They've got proprietary mother boards with ***** up heatsink mount points...you can easily replace your P4 for a Core 2 Duo, but you'll just toast it when it doesn't fit the Dell mounts. Most peoples computers don't even have a PCI-E x16 slot.
- mtekk, on 12/09/2007, -0/+4The average user (and console owner) doesn't uninstall the crap, and if they don't even do that how do you expect them to know how/what to upgrade? - vilator, on 12/09/2007, -1/+4People game on the console because there are actually GOOD games for it? If you want to play anything besides fps' and rts', than you need a console. Can you play halo 3, mass effect on the pc?
- uziko, on 12/09/2007, -2/+3Actually you can play any game on a pc, it's called take your controller plug it into your computer, same thing you do on you console, all you gotta do is just plug it in. There is no difference.
Personally I only play rts and fps, but if I really wanted to play a different kind game all i would have to do it double click the icon, plug in my controller, and play. - mtekk, on 12/09/2007, -2/+2"If you want to play anything besides fps' and rts'..."
And what other popular game type is there now other than those two that is on console? Racing games? Sports games? Most of those are on PC too.
Also try playing an MMORPG on your console, I guess WoW is a good game, I don't play it but what ever.
- uziko, on 12/09/2007, -2/+3Actually you can play any game on a pc, it's called take your controller plug it into your computer, same thing you do on you console, all you gotta do is just plug it in. There is no difference.

- khyberkitsune, on 12/09/2007, -2/+8umm, yea, the PS3 is a crippled computer. You let me know when you've got one of the most powerful computer architectures known to man on your desktop, running everything in parallel. The only area the PS3 is really crippled is the total lack of RAM.
- uziko, on 12/09/2007, -3/+1The cell processor is slower than the latest celerons. The cell has 8 cores, but each one of those cores is the equivalent of a pentium 1. 1 core of a core 2 duo is faster than the cell processor.
- Pureeviljester, on 12/09/2007, -1/+3what? last time i checked a good gaming computer was about $900
- uziko, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1wrong, a fast computer can easily be bought for under $300 dollars
- GawtMilk, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1Wrong. That's the cost of a decent video card.
I'd say it's about $600 - $700 if you don't need a monitor.
Case
Motherboard
CPU
RAM
Video Card
Hard Drive
Optical Media - uziko, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1wrong, 99% of america already has a computer and a monitor, so you don't need a case hard drive, or a dvd player.
motherboard, $50, cpu $100, 2gigs of memory, $40, video card, $150
that's a total of $350 dollars for a new computer that will be 5X faster than a ps3
- GawtMilk, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1Wrong. That's the cost of a decent video card.
- djgump35, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2can you show me that computer, I would like to have a computer that good and play blu-ray on it, under $300, really?....

- floatingpoints, on 12/09/2007, -1/+1What, the concept of a media center seriously eludes you?
Aren't too smart, are ya?- sanotaan, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1i read books.
- wilhel1812, on 12/09/2007, -0/+3what about quake and other pc games?
- mercurysquad, on 12/12/2007, -0/+2Well I want to run a ray tracer engine I'm working on. My usual centrino and AMD processors aren't quite cutting it, but with the 6 cores on the Cell, I can make my code run 6 times faster with parallelization. And other such uses. In short, if I have such a powerful machine, why waste it on just playing games and movies? I'd want to make as much use of it as possible.
- cajie, on 12/09/2007, -25/+19PS3 is not a console. It's a way of life.
- HerbSolo, on 12/09/2007, -16/+3No HDMI out i guess?
- AntBing, on 12/09/2007, -0/+11You guess wrong.
- Rikiji, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1HDMI is supported.
- smacksaw, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1Enjoying 1920x1080 on my PS3 running 7.04...thank you very much!
- amrush4th, on 12/09/2007, -1/+8Did file sharing work with other computers in the house? if so this might be nice just to access the media on my desktop already.
- 89vision, on 12/09/2007, -0/+8yes, if Samba is configured correcty
- MWeather, on 12/09/2007, -1/+5You can already access the media on your Desktop. I've seen streaming music and movies for months. Cheaper than getting a bigger hard drive in the PS3.
- Erowid, on 12/09/2007, -2/+2The PS3 doesn't have divx support yet.

- databoy, on 12/09/2007, -35/+1Lame guide. Why would anyone in their right mind want to install Ubuntu on a Playstation 3 when there is Linux already installed. Obvious a noob who cannot work the Linux OS on a Playstation 3.
- einfeldt, on 12/09/2007, -1/+9@ databoy:
No, I think you might be mistaken. AFAIK, there is no Linux OS by default on the PS3. There were rumors that Sony was going to install Linux on it by default, but it actually runs a proprietary Sony OS. Please correct me if I am wrong, but I think I am correct. - Arkz, on 12/09/2007, -0/+6...Ubuntu IS Linux.. there's lots of different distributions of Linux like Fedora Core, Yellow Dog, Debian and so on...
and Linux is NOT pre installed on the PS3... you need to format the PS3 as soon as you buy it to make a second partition for your Linux OS, or if you've already had one for a while backup all yer crap, format, then copy it back over...
but sure carry on calling people n00bs and spreading your misinformation... next time look at Wikipedia or Google... - GOVATENT, on 12/09/2007, -2/+8I logged on just to digg you down. I own a 360, my buddy a PS3. I have a psn account on his ps3, and he has a live account on my 360. We use his ps3 to games, and as a computer at times if we don't want to walk to a computer. But calling people noobs when you sir are more of a complete noob... wow Somethings tells me you must also be some sort of fan boy.
- guruboyguru, on 12/09/2007, -1/+0You can easily install Yellow Dog Linux but a lot of people like Ubuntu Linux, in case you haven't noticed.

- emgonzalez, on 12/09/2007, -0/+17why not accelerated graphics still? I would like to understand.
Also, I wish somebody would port the x264 encoder for the cell architecture. I'd like to encode HD h264 real time!- computershack, on 12/09/2007, -5/+0Wy no 3D graphics? If you have 3D graphics, you're not going to be spending as much on PS3 games are you? FFS...
- emgonzalez, on 12/09/2007, -1/+3I meant for the xwindows GUI. I see what you're saying about games and allowing access to the hardware, but I honestly don't see how that could hurt the PS3.
See "Everyday Shooter". Indie production, kicks ass. With better access to hardware 100's of apps like this would spring up... and people would pay for them.
Case in point: XBMC in the Xbox. The only reason I bought an Xbox and ended up buying games for it.
- emgonzalez, on 12/09/2007, -1/+3I meant for the xwindows GUI. I see what you're saying about games and allowing access to the hardware, but I honestly don't see how that could hurt the PS3.
- ZenPirate, on 12/09/2007, -0/+15 There is no 3d graphics because Sony won't let developers into the RSX chip on the PS3. It's as simple as that.
- kazamx, on 12/09/2007, -0/+6but that has been hacked now. It will take time before it is easy to use, but it will come.
- rkuchiki, on 12/09/2007, -1/+1h264 has been done, if you look on Google, and unfortunately no significant speed increase was obtained.
- zaffir, on 12/09/2007, -0/+5To my knowledge there is no h264 codec optimized for the PS3. When the spu-medialib project gets h264 support done we'll see those incredible speed increases.

- TechCF, on 12/09/2007, -0/+8Well because the hypervisor is restricting access to the flashrom, cpu, memory and gfx card. This is to stop people from exploiting the hardware and opening the device for homebrew/pirated software. Think of the hypervisor creating a kind of virtual machine for you OS, but with direct hardware access for some devices.
- computershack, on 12/09/2007, -5/+0Wy no 3D graphics? If you have 3D graphics, you're not going to be spending as much on PS3 games are you? FFS...
- neiltc13, on 12/09/2007, -30/+4Why not install Windows and get a decent piece of software because you paid for it?
- 89vision, on 12/09/2007, -0/+25because Windows wont run on ppc.

- pennpaper, on 12/09/2007, -4/+15because windows is a rubbish piece of software that i've never paid for but am forced to use at work and school.
UBUNTU FTW. - mvent2, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2Its sad that you have to pay for an OS thats vastly inferior to Linux, but thats your choice I guess.
- 89vision, on 12/09/2007, -0/+25because Windows wont run on ppc.
- skoles, on 12/09/2007, -0/+11The article mentions I won't lose my XMB partion and, hopefully, all my saves if I make a new partition. Is this true?
- shanewinston, on 12/09/2007, -4/+1yup
- rkuchiki, on 12/09/2007, -0/+14To format a partition for linux you have to reformat the entire drive. You will not lose the XMB and settings, since these are in the flashrom, nor will you lose the friends list, since this is on PSN. However all downloaded games, saves, virtual memory cards, music, videos and pictures will be lost if not backed up.
- emgonzalez, on 12/09/2007, -0/+12if you have a big enough FAT32 USB drive, you can backup _everything_ using one of the XMB menus and, once you finish installing linux and boot back onto XMB, then restore it all back to exactly how it looked when you took the snapshot. I did it about 6 months ago and saved savegames, pics, vids and all my stuff.
- rkuchiki, on 12/10/2007, -0/+3Yes, Sony offers a backup option. However, my success with it has been minimal. It will sit for about 5 minutes before failing. Your milage may vary and you may end up having to backup everything manually then redownloading your games from PSN.

- Frenzy44, on 12/09/2007, -5/+4will it still play the games?
- rockets, on 12/10/2007, -0/+2Yes it will. You either boot LInx or boot your "game-os" (i.e. the PS3 XMB you know)
- Dobby156, on 12/09/2007, -15/+5still not a real reason to buy a PS3, mearly another way to make those who bought one to justify there
- HerbSolo, on 12/09/2007, -1/+2I don't know - if you need a PC mainly for office software AND you want to play games, this doesn't seem a to be a bad deal.
I haven't seen it work yet, but i've heard it's quite silent and an OK blue-ray player.
The main reason i didn't buy one yet, is - all my friends have 360s so there's plenty of games to borrow . (and i like the 360's controller better)
- HerbSolo, on 12/09/2007, -1/+2I don't know - if you need a PC mainly for office software AND you want to play games, this doesn't seem a to be a bad deal.
- TechCF, on 12/09/2007, -1/+11I have done this myself. 7.04 was no success, but 7.10 is.
One tip for a faster experience is to mount the swap partition on a fast memory card. 256MB ram is not enough for heavy OpenOffice or Firefox usage.- marx2k, on 12/09/2007, -11/+2You planning on writing your doctorate thesis on your ps3?
- smacksaw, on 12/10/2007, -0/+4You just have to use the regular old text-based install. There isn't enough RAM for the GUI load without tweaking...not that I could figure out. And yes, I've got a 512mb SD card for a swap as well. Lifesaver.
- TechCF, on 12/09/2007, -1/+4On addition:
You dont need a memory card, usb stick and such if you download the patched "custom" Ubuntu PowerPC+PS3 iso image. It is available on the official mirrors together with the disc the tutorial mentions. - macaholic, on 12/09/2007, -2/+4I wonder if (and how well) compiz-fusion works?
- zwaldowski, on 12/09/2007, -0/+12Zero, right now. There's no GPU access.
- smackafiyah, on 12/09/2007, -0/+11I just installed this on mine this past weekend, had to do a few tweaks to get wireless internet and the SAXXIS bluetooth working, but other than that, runs perfectly. Now back to playing my mame/snes/genesis roms on it now.
- porfitron, on 12/09/2007, -0/+9This is a great answer to those here asking WHY? Well, emulators, of course!
- romstah, on 12/09/2007, -7/+4this is really old news, i did this when gutsy came out.
- frosted, on 12/09/2007, -4/+2Did I miss something? Can you still play PS3 games after you do this?
- Phssthpok, on 12/09/2007, -0/+6Did you read the article?
- halfway, on 12/09/2007, -0/+6Yes you can, you just have to reboot into the ps3's os. In the article one sets the ubuntu as default so that there is the option at the beginnin to boot back into the regular ps3 os. After booting into it, all games and normal functions of the ps3 are available - nothing has changed except a little smaller hard drive.
- lukasmack, on 12/09/2007, -4/+3Well done people bringing up windows an a thread that was nothing to do with it, well done setting up the flame bait.
- compgeek7889, on 12/09/2007, -11/+5i guess the ps3 is not totally useless
- Zamfir, on 12/09/2007, -0/+9... but I guess, sadly you are.
- russianmonkey, on 12/09/2007, -8/+1Maybe they should fix the whole output to only HDTV issue.
I've still got a standard def TV on my HD PS3.- HerbSolo, on 12/09/2007, -0/+5how are they supposed to upgrade the resolution of your TV???
- smackafiyah, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2http://psubuntu.com/installation-instructions/setu ...
This explains how to set your resolution on your TV
- ImWatchingYou, on 12/09/2007, -1/+8Gentoo has been on the PS3 for ages. It compiles amazingly fast.
- KezG, on 12/09/2007, -0/+11@people: just add me as a friend and I'll make a shout when the guide is done. Should be up just after crimbo. :)
- senatorpjt, on 12/09/2007, -1/+1Can you install the Cell SDK on Ubuntu yet? I'd prefer using Ubuntu, but as of yet, afaik it doesn't work with the Cell SDK. (You need to use YDL which pretty much sucks)
- pencilneck, on 12/09/2007, -1/+4I tired this whole mess last week. Getting Linux to install on the PS3 isn't all that hard. When you partition your hard drive, you will loose all of your saved games, music, videos, and photos that you've saved onto the hard drive. Copy what you want to save onto a thumb drive or flash card.
The issue I've run into is the wireless doesn't work under Linux, something happened when Sony upgraded the PS3 to version 2.xx. Also, depending on how you have your TV hooked up, you may have to do a couple of command line tweaks to get the the resolution correct so you can see the whole screen instead (as was the case for me). But everything has a pink-ish hue to it.
There are guides on how to fix the 2.xx wireless issue, but I never could get them to work. As with most things Linux... I follow the guides step-by-step and then they don't work for whatever reason.
There isn't support for all hardware.... the joystick isn't supported and it doesn't take full support of the graphics.
I'm going to sit this one out for a while and wait until there is a more "turn key" install just for the PS3 that actually works 100% out of the box.- smackafiyah, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1There's a kernel update that will fix the WIFI issue plus let you use your SIXAXIS bluetooth controller.

- kinggimped, on 12/09/2007, -0/+14I think Sony really should be lauded for supporting Linux on their latest console. The fanbois will go off on their retarded little tirades, but I think it's definitely a step in the right direction - it's time consoles had more scope than just playing games - it's why I haven't bought one since the PSX.
- deadbaby, on 12/09/2007, -0/+3I completely agree. I'm not a huge console gamer so being able to do non-gaming stuff on it is a huge selling point. I made the mistake of buying a 360 thinking it would get cracked quickly but that never really worked out. (the sad part is I had the exploitable firmware at one point, should have never updated)
- kinggimped, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1I thought the 360 cracks were all about flashing the drive, rather than the firmware? So you can still update the system software? Am I very wrong and very stupid in the eyes of everybody on Digg, or just misinformed?

- brandonhines, on 12/09/2007, -0/+19There was an official Linux kit for the PS2. Sony deserved praise then too.
- tekiek, on 12/09/2007, -6/+2The is the most expensive Ubuntu machine
- samurimaster, on 12/09/2007, -1/+3But can you still play games on it ?
- ittech, on 12/09/2007, -8/+2Why, I've got a 360 for that.
- 000dom000, on 12/09/2007, -0/+6yes you can, you simply select either the ps3 OS or ubuntu OS on startup
- darthbator, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1I just ordered a PS3 and I'm excited to put Ubuntu on it once I'm done playing my fill of Assassins Creed and Uncharted. From what I understand there is a hypervisor restricting access to the RSX, which would severely limit the consoles ability to do anything like HD movie rendering or compiz/beryl.
- 000dom000, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2yes correct, but some geniuses have figured out a way into it. not yet useful way to implement yet though
- togepi258, on 12/09/2007, -1/+3the real question is....
Can I use my PS3 to play WoW now?- djgump35, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2I don't play WoW, but wouldn't memory be an issue here?
- derkmerkin, on 12/10/2007, -1/+1i dont think wine runs on PPC
- krische, on 12/09/2007, -0/+3Are there any USB TV tuners that are linux-compatible so you could record TV with the PS3?
- diggmc, on 12/10/2007, -0/+0Yes, Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-usb2. You can find them on ebay, as I believe Hauppauge no longer makes them.
- jzamoras, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1I'm in need of real computing power for number crunching. Is there a way to use this to run Matlab for Linux with this setup?
- floatingpoints, on 12/09/2007, -0/+8Except it's still slow as balls.
They need to release the GFX access ASAP - smek2, on 12/09/2007, -5/+1What ever happened to GNU/Linux?
- HalsMyPal, on 12/09/2007, -6/+1well at least the ps3 is good for something.
maybe if they had 3 ps3s they could also try to instal windows and Leopard. - u16085, on 12/09/2007, -1/+6this makes a huge difference... I'm no fan boy. I own a 360 for the reason that it hit the market first, but I'm rather disappointed i am unable to browse the net or do basic computer functions. I bought a game system to stop the upgrade game (new video card every year, new processor every year) just to keep up. 360 does have usb keyboard support so why not add a damn browser, since a optional operating system will not happen. Imagine that *****, Linux on a MS gaming console... never.
- nullity, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2"Imagine that *****, Linux on a MS gaming console... never. "
Yeah? http://www.xbox-linux.org/ Imagine that..- derkmerkin, on 12/10/2007, -0/+2Ya, cuz MS gave people the tools to put linux on the 360 like sony did for the ps2/3...

- JedicodeWarrior, on 12/09/2007, -7/+0I guess Ubuntu had no other legitimate use.
- deadbaby, on 12/09/2007, -0/+4Too bad Sony won't allow accelerated graphics support in Linux. I'd have no problem with a closed source binary module for it. The PS3 could be a great multi-purpose set top box -- indie games, media center. As it stands now Linux on the PS3 seems like a novelty.
- kjm16, on 12/09/2007, -1/+2Anybody know if it's possible to get a PPC Mac OS running on a PS3?
- freebasen, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1I'm wondering if maybe Mac-on-Linux would work?
- Stevo23, on 12/09/2007, -5/+0Yes, but the real question is...how does this relate to Ron Paul?
- jasorn, on 12/10/2007, -1/+1I don't get it. If you want to play games on your linux box, just boot the pc.
- rlbond86, on 12/10/2007, -3/+1Ubuntu is lame. Try using a real Linux distro.
- phinn, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1So what distro runs better? Ubuntu 7.10 or YellowDog?
http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/products/ydl/
YellowDog claims to be completely optimized for the PS3 but I guess it will lack the updates that Ubuntu might have.
Overall this is totally worth doing, you can even run emulators for NES/SNES/Genesis/GBA/etc and turn PS3 into an uber game system along with using it as a computer.- ImWatchingYou, on 12/10/2007, -1/+1Gentoo definitely runs the best.
- vyriix, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1What's wrong with you people? This was done to show how far Ubuntu's flexibility can stretch. Take your utter nonsense ramblings of "there's no point in doing this" elsewhere.
