- mwales, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37I have Dapper Drake running on both an x86_64 and i386 system at home. It's been great, very solid, not a single crash. If you get the x86 version, check out Automatix (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=77), so you can have all the must-have media players, browser plugins, etc. If you want to try out the XGL/Compiz eye candy stuff, read the thread on Ubuntu forums about it (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=148351).
Congrats to Canonical and the rest of the (K/X/ed)ubuntu team, they have done a great job.- brentcore, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30in my opinion (for what its worth), it is THE most professional and polished distro to date. This the very first distro that I am confident is completely capable of replacing any friend's/family member's windows installation to their total satisfaction (with automatix included). This is the time to try out linux if you haven't yet!
- geminem, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3hi, do you know how i can intall it if i already have 5.10? i already have things set up like scim, etc that i don't want to lose. i'm not super familiar with the technical aspects of ubuntu so please use non-technical terms to explain. =)
by the way i don't have broadband on the computer i installed 5.10 on. i'll have to download the iso of 6.06 from a different computer and then install it here on the pc where i have 5.10. thanks. - EmileVictor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Although I backed up and did a fresh format of the linux partiton, there are commands (discussed in the thread) that allow you to upgrade from badger to drake via the gui.
- dipswitch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22@brentcore, I recommend Easy Ubuntu over Automatix.
http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/ - adam.skinner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12As of yesterday, Automatix didn't support 6.06. Easybuntu is your answer there.
- gadgetuk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@geminem
I expect "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" from a terminal window will do the trick (assuming it's all available now). To go to one of the drake "flights" from breezy you had to use some strage "consider-beta" switch but that shouldn't be neccessary any more. - geminem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1hi gadgetuk,
i can't update straight from apt-get (or synaptic, etc) for large files because the computer i installed ubuntu 5.10 on isn't connected to the net via broadband. it would probably take years to finish downloading. =(
i'm planning to download 6.06 from a different computer and bring home the cd and install it over 5.10 (that was how i was able to install 5.10 months ago). what i want to know is, if there's some kind of option on the 6.06 cd that says "update" instead of "install completely and erase old files"?
if that's not possible, it's okay i guess. thanks again for replying. =) - Snakedal337, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8As other said before me , Easy Ubuntu > Automatix
- eqisow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@geminem
Normally your install CD is in the respository. Just change the entry for the Breezy CD to the Dapper CD. Put in the CD then run sun apt-get update then sudo apt-get dist-upgrade and it should ask for the CD. You should be good to go.
(It may just ask you if you want to upgrade when you put the CD in, I'm not sure. I've never upgraded with the CD) - M4v3R, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@geminem
It is posibble, yes. apt-cdrom command will do the trick. - gadgetuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Hi geminem,
Sorry, I missed that you were offline.
Chances are that booting from the new cd will have the upgrade option - they certainly used to. If not, boot normally, pop in the new cd then go to "System>Preferences>Synaptic package manager". Once that's open click "settings > repositories" then click the "add cd-rom" button. Once that's finished make sure the new cd has a tick next to it in the main Synaptic window and click "reload". Then click "mark all upgrades" and "apply". That should do it, if not try my first suggestion afterwards because the new cd is now a valid repository for apt-get to use so it should upgrade. - fredinator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@geminem
You can add the 6.06 disk as an apt source via synaptic and then run apt-get upgrade/dist-upgrade

Automatix does work in Dapper now - http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=177646 - geminem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3thanks to all of you who took the time to help me. thanks. i've downloaded the 6.06 .iso already using the school computer. later when i get home i'm going to update my 5.10. thanks!
- brentcore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4hey didn't have time to read through the rest of the comments, but i noticed that some people were saying that automatix didn't support 6.06. Actually, Automatix has had a quite stable beta for 6.06 for quite some time now. I've used about 6 or 7 times so far and its worked flawlessly. Also, someone else mentioned easyubuntu, which is really great for noobs as well who just want certain things to work right out of the box (like mp3 playback). Another suggestion for anyone new is to google klik. I haven't tried it yet, but it's supposed to let you install common programs in a similar way that windows handles program installation. Of course, eventually you'll dive deeper into linux and want to compile your programs yourself from the tarball :) . Tools like automatix, however, are a great timesaver, especially if you're scraping XP off a loved one's box and putting ubuntu on.
--On an unrelated note: I just went through this with my girlfriend's computer. Her XP was loaded with spyware, so to my surprise she asked me to put linux on it after I lectured her so many times about how much better linux is. After putting on ubuntu, she stared at the desktop and looked disappointed, until I changed the plain brown background to some professional flowery wallpaper I ganked from my SUSE 10.1 installation. I then made the menu bars transparent and she flipped out. I showed her how customizable gnome is too. She told me that "linux is way better than windows". So a word to the wise: your girlfriend could care less about the cool geeky things like bash commands and file permissions. But bring a CD full of eye candy for her and then she'll thank you ;) . - albrad84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Easy Ubuntu does support Dapper now....
http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/get.html - eqisow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@brentcore
My girlfriend would take offense to that comment. Sure, she liked eye-candy, who doesn't? But she also likes Ubuntu for (most of) the same reasons I do. :) - Avian00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@geminem (or anybody else wanting an easy upgrade from 5.10 to 6.06)
Open a terminal and type the following:
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
When promped, type your password. Now in the text editor, replace all instances of the word "breezy" with the word "dapper". Save your changes and exit.
When back at the command promt again, type this:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Now your downloading and installing the latest Ubuntu! - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm almost certain you don't have to do the apt-get distr-upgrade.. For me it automatically downloaded last night (Along with 168 other updates..).. Well, atleast the splash-screen graphic changed, and I had to sort the GRUB menu list, which happens when the kernel is updated (new kernels are automaticly listed in GRUB)

- TubaTechno, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3So what about games? And the ability to program .NET web sites? I'm willing to use Ubuntu when i upgrade to a new box, but I want to know from those who are already using Ubuntu, what CAN"T i do that I normally do in a Windows machine?
- brentcore, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3you ***** spammer. Check out this dude's history. I remember reading somewhere else that osdir.com was trying to game digg to get more click-throughs. You are a waste of space. Quit giving this dick a thumbs up and start burying him if you care at all about the integrity of the digg comment threads.
- asmodeus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@TubaTechno
For games, there's very few. There's things like all of the id software games (Quake 4, Doom 3, Enemy Territory, etc), and Unreal Tournament. There's also ocassionally other releases, like Neverwinter Nights a few years ago. There's also the possibility of running games using Cedega (a WINE spinoff), but I've never used it, and it supports a limited range. Still, I'd probably just use Windows for gaming - I do for Civilization 4. I'm a pretty big gamer, but I mostly stick to consoles.
With .NET - check out Mono. Along with their own open set of libraries and implementation of the ECMA/ISO standard core libraries, they also provide a separate set of Microsoft compatibility libraries - these are not 100% of course, but how can you expect a set of non standardised closed libraries provided by Microsoft (note that I'm not saying they're bad - I did quite a lot of ASP.NET development at my last job and liked it, and still work with .NET on Windows every day) to be reimplemented perfectly by a third party in a reasonable amount of time?
With all that said, don't go into it expecting it to act like Windows - stuff operates differently, in ways you might not expect, just as it would for you if you were to go from Linux to Windows (or any other OS combination). - TubaTechno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think you're the first Linux user who hasn't codemned me to hell for not switching to Ubuntu or SUSE already....thanks.
- plingboot, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Finally! A little disappointed though, I was expecting Canonical to mark this release with a bit more of a bang. Where are the midnight parties and fireworks? And it's still showing 5.10 here : http://www.ubuntu.com/download

- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i think that's just part of the nature of most open source stuff, you don't get a huge fanfared release at large increments, it's a more evolutionary process. still gonna try it though

- cazabam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@jacobmp92, that's the point of release candidates - it's a candidate for release. If there were more changes, then another release candidate would need to be created. It's perfectly normal for the last RC to be identical to the release.

- weijie90, on 10/12/2007, -14/+8Hi,
I've heard lots of bad stuff about Ubuntu in general. (It's slow, brown sucks, build-essential is not installed by default...)
Can anyone tell me exactly why Dapper should be a consideration? Thanks!- dipswitch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+76.06 is a lot faster then previous releases, the desktop theme in 6.06 is brown and orange, with new icons, a new application theme and a new window decoration, build-essential is not installed by default for good reason (but included on the install CD).
That, and tonnes of other improvements. - jacobmp92, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5That would be Breezy. Dapper is waaaay better.
- sillywalk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Get kubuntu, it's blue.
- geminem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3well, i've used 5.10 for a few months and it's super easy to use. it's easy to download things from synaptic, but since i don't have a broadband connection on the PC i installed ubuntu 5.10 on, it's difficult to download larger updates from synaptic. i download the tar.gz things using other computers and then burn it, and install manually. it's not as easy as installing .exes in Windows, but there's usually instructions that can guide you.
yeah, i agree the brown color looks boring, but you can easily change the look.
it's not slow at all. i installed 5.10 on an older PC of mine, 1.5ghz pentium4, only 256mb of ram and it runs fine. =)
i don't know what "build essential" means, but i'm guessing if you want whatever that is installed by default, maybe you're an advanced user already. i don't know if advanced users would enjoy using ubuntu though. hehe. but basic users would really enjoy ubuntu though.
ooooh, and i just found out now that ubuntu 6.06 has scim already in the cd. that's super great as i won't have to apt-get it and wait ages (as i said the PC i installed ubuntu on is not connected to the net using broadband). that's a boon for people who need to use scim (to type chinese, and also korean and japanese i think.). =) - cazabam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9in order:
1) it's slow - No it's not. Not much else I can say, either you believe me or you don't, but why not try it?
2) it's brown - Yes, but it has other themes ... or you could use Xubuntu, Kubuntu or even Edubuntu for different defaults
3) build-essential not installed - so install it! It's one command, or a single package in Synaptic
I have to say I didn't know what to expect, but I installed the RC and was blown away by it. It boots faster than any other linux distro, it's polished to a shine and everything 'just works' (with the exception of my particularly troublesome wifi card, which took 5 minutes to sort).
@geminem - you're downloading tarballs?!? Why not download the prebuild packages directly from the repositories and install them with dpkg. It reduces installation to one command, and it's the same command for everything.
Linky: http://linuxhelp.blogspot.com/2005/12/concise-apt-get-dpkg-primer-for-new.html - sbutcher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The boot process is slow, in the least case, you should "apt-get install sysv-rc-conf" and remove unused services (e.g. if you don't have pcmcia slot, then you don't need pcmcia!)
Gnome and KDE gobble up a bit of RAM on low memory machines, so you may be interested in the speedy fluxbox desktop. - dipswitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1install "bootchart", that gives you a graphical representation of the boot process each time in /var/log/bootchart
- nailbunny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1for a linux distribution, ubuntu is fast. unless you're installing something that's purposefully minimal like dsl or puppy, or you're building all your own ***** like gentoo, this is as fast as it gets, as far as i know.
you want to see real slowness, you should try to use suse. 9.3 was torture compared to this
- dipswitch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+76.06 is a lot faster then previous releases, the desktop theme in 6.06 is brown and orange, with new icons, a new application theme and a new window decoration, build-essential is not installed by default for good reason (but included on the install CD).

When will there be universal support of AMD64 by soft/hardware makers?- babbling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3One of the goals for next release (6 months from now) is better 64-bit support, I think. That release is meant to be very ambitious, though (lots of cutting-edge experimental stuff), so it might not be the best one to use on your desktop.
Basically, in the release that is 1 year from now, 64-bit support should be perfected. - sgent, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Suse & Redhat/Fedora actually do this much better than the debian based distro's.
When you attempt to install a 32bit binary, they download and link against the 32bit libraries, which allows it to run transparently.
I think the structure of the debian builds don't allow for this (at least easily). You can get most functionality using a chroot environment, but its not easy. - 21chrisp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0AFAIK The ELF format Linux uses cannot run universal binaries. Separate libraries and apps need to be built for each arch.
- eqisow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Babbling, the next release is 4 months from now. Dapper is 6.06 (instead of 6.04)because it was delayed two months, but Edgy will still be 6.10. They are sticking to their release cycle despite the Dapper delay. :)

if you read the major changes link that was given above it lists the following
***************
Installation and Upgrades
* Ubuntu can now be installed to USB devices, such as removable
hard drives and flash memory, using the text-mode installer
* A new upgrade tool is available, for simple, clean and reliable
upgrades from one Ubuntu release to the next, starting with
Ubuntu 5.10
* The alternate installer now runs in a single stage, rebooting
straight into the complete system. This makes it faster,
simpler, and more reliable.

http://www.lynucs.org/index.php?p=all
http://www.kde-look.org/
http://www.gnome-look.org
you don't want Ubuntu themes, you want Gnome themes, or KDE themes.... - Mathiasdm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You don't get it, so Linux is not ready for noobs?
Anyways, you can go to http://www.gnome-look.org/ , they have lots of themes. - joshpape, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is Ubuntu KDE or Gnome? It also seems complicated to split partition you hard drive. I did a search a while back but couldnt find that much that was easy to understand. I would realy like Linux to be mainstream as it would be good for the industry as a whole
- neko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Any distro is fine. Just go http://www.gnome-look.org/
Edit: third place, damn =) - dcherryholmes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2sudo apt-get install gnome-art
- eqisow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ubuntu is Gnome, but there is also Kubuntu, which is Ubuntu with KDE. As is always the case with Linux, you have choice!
- nailbunny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1partitioning your HD is not hard at all. it's a bit risky, so you may want to back up your essential files (i never do), but here's what you do.
i assume you have windows and you want to resize your partition without losing your data. so the first thing you do is you defrag your hd
you use partition magic, or some other partitioner you have, or the mandrake install dvd, or the gparted live cd. i reccomend the gparted live cd. you download the image, burn it to cd, boot off it, and this will allow you to resize your ntfs partition.
now there are some computers like dells that have small fat16 utility partitions and bigger restore partitions, i can't be held responsible for what happens to your computer if you delete one of these, so do what you can to avoid messing with these particular partitions.
you need 8-12 gb to be free for linux. you leave the empty space that you've resized, boot up your linux distro install disk of choice, and make a 1gb swap partition, and the rest you format as ext3 and mount as "/".
that's it. the rest of the linux installation should be straightforward, except for gross hardware incompatability, meteor impacts, or other acts of god
- babbling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Just get Ubuntu and install a different theme. There should be plenty to choose from.
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Niceness. I'll add it to my 12GB of Linux ISOs, and sometime actually get round to burning and using it...
Where are the live disks though?- arizonagroove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9"Where are the live disks though?"
It's now called the desktop cd. - babbling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I think the LiveCD is merged with the install CD. In fact, apparently there's even a feature where you can launch the LiveCD, and install Ubuntu while using it (from the LiveCD) for other stuff!
- bilangew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In fact the LiveCD is not called Desktop CD, just as the other poster mentionned.
The alternative CD (or was it "alternate"?) is just the text-only installation for advanced installation methods. - tmahmood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think this is the default behaviour now. You boot from the Desktop CD and you Install from there...
- arizonagroove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9"Where are the live disks though?"
- PlancksCnst, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I had a hard time getting to the download site. Then I tried the Netherlands mirror - works great.

- bitshifter, on 10/12/2007, -13/+4Awesome! Can we stop seeing an Ubuntu post every single day now? It's out, you guys ***** love it, thats great. Good job, you can install linux. You get a cookie and a digg from every other Ubuntu user.
- buddyfarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2if you don't like it then don't read the article... -digg. I don't use linux that often, though I do use the mitel e-smith server at home to run my website, but I do like to hear any news that comes up. just to keep informed.
- Mathiasdm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5But... I was preparing my 'Ubuntu has been out for an hour!' blog post!
Can't I...
;-)
- blackmath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Downloaded and installing now. Are all the images live cds? It boooted up as a live cd but then you can double click install on the desktop and it will start installing it. Is there not a straight up install cd?
- spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's now called the "text-mode install disk" - - and generally there's no use for it.
- ElJefeGrande, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wireless configuration with WPA is still a bitch to setup. I followed the arduous yet simple directions here to set up my IBM T41 for WPA and NetworkManager (and it works!)
http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/Network_Manager_with_WPA- Glissy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ElJefeGrande:
Which wireless card do you have in your T41? I have the Intel 2200 B/G card in my T42, and am wondering if the instructions will work for me. - ElJefeGrande, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Glissy- In my rugged T41 I have the slow Intel 802.11b (2100 B) wireless card. But I recall seeing on the page (which for some reason is not coming up anymore) that it supports the 2200 B/G card. Good luck!

- MrsHarris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Whoop! I'm real excited about this... I loved 5.10 and everyone says this is much better.
Also, yes the desktop cd's are the live cds and installs all in one. - SirZRX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Im a Gamer, i i wish they add add masive support for games (wine sux)
- eqisow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't ask Ubuntu; ask your game companies. They will have to be the ones to do ports.
Alternatively, you could check out http://www.happypenguin.org/ for some Linux native games.
Edit: Also, while there are a lot of games Wine will not run, it doesn't suck. The guys at WineHQ do awesome work and should be commended for their efforts.

- jamey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm downloading the ISO now. I can't wait to boot into the live environment and then simply click on 'Install' on the desktop. Apparently it's real fast and streamlined. I love Ubuntu!

Ben - wush, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is it worth installing the 64-bit version if you have an Athlon64 processor? I hear Windows XP 64-bit users have a bit more hassle finding drivers and getting certain applications to work. Is it like this for Linux?
- eqisow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3In short, yes. Well, not really drivers per se. But things like flash and w32 codecs. You can do a chroot to get around it, ut still...
- anasazi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3yes, this is true. the average user will be better off using the 32bit version for a little while longer.
- apu95, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Downloading CD ISO now, I don't wanna wait for the DVD torrent to complete (Sympatico.ca gives a maximum download of 180KB/sec...And that's the highest speed they have -_-). What's the difference between the CD and DVD? I'm assuming just how many RPMs come with it, right?
Hopefully my Intel 2200 B/G will work right away, otherwise I'm gonna have to hookup using ethernet to my router, download the driver/firmware/stack and then install xD - panlee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why don't they release it few days later so that we can have 6.06 on 06.06.06 ?
- mbthompson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Whooppee! Already ordered 10 CDs but I'm going to download an ISO because I just can't wait that long! This is the first Linux distro that hasn't left me worried about command line stuff, usability, too many questions without support etc. I really hope this takes off. Very cool that they have a version for Mac too. Here's to cross platform compatability!
- FuManchu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The great Fu was wrong!
Mark it on your calendars, boys & girls. The great Fu was all but certain that they couldn't possible make it by June 1st.
I have never been more pleased to have been proved mistaken!
Like apu95, I'm hoping that the Intel 2200BG support will be there. I already scrunched up my Windows ntfs install on my Toshiba laptop [With GPartEd 2.5] and repartitioned the rest of the HDD in anticipation of this release. Linux laptop finally! I hope.
Kudos to the Ubuntu teams, especially the ducklings who worked their tails off to to the last hour to make this happen!! - almighty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2OK, I know this comment will get dugg down but I have to get this off of my chest.
I have been running Ubuntu since day one and I am VERY happy with this distro. I have been running the Dapper Betas for quite a long time before its release, and even though it has come a long way I am just not seeing the greatness that others are seeing.
I really wish I knew the programming to help the developers out but I do not unfortunately. One of the largest downfalls is the lack of wireless support. The Orinoco card that worked for me with no modifications in Breezy does not work for me in Dapper.
I do think this is a good OS and perfect for someone new to the Linux community, but I don't think it's anything revolutionary. Eddgy Eft and after to me should be the releases that should have the power to change peoples way of thinking about Linux.- FuManchu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Try the ndiswrapper as outined in this article to get your wifi going.
It alllows the use of windows drivers.
Or it should, theoretically:

- Hintzer22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i tried running ubuntu live cd on my 12" powerbook but my wireless card was not showing up. is this a short fall for ubuntu on a PPC? or is it just a feature not available from the live disc?
