- mwales, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37I have Dapper Drake running on both an x86_64 and i386 system at home. It's been great, very solid, not a single crash. If you get the x86 version, check out Automatix (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=77), so you can have all the must-have media players, browser plugins, etc. If you want to try out the XGL/Compiz eye candy stuff, read the thread on Ubuntu forums about it (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=148351).
Congrats to Canonical and the rest of the (K/X/ed)ubuntu team, they have done a great job. - brentcore, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30in my opinion (for what its worth), it is THE most professional and polished distro to date. This the very first distro that I am confident is completely capable of replacing any friend's/family member's windows installation to their total satisfaction (with automatix included). This is the time to try out linux if you haven't yet!
- dipswitch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22@brentcore, I recommend Easy Ubuntu over Automatix.

http://releases.ubuntu.com/6.06/ - adam.skinner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12As of yesterday, Automatix didn't support 6.06. Easybuntu is your answer there.

- sillywalk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Get kubuntu, it's blue.
- dipswitch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12The link leads to yesterday's version. Not the final.
Get the actual 6.06 LTS final version here: http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/6.06/release/
Please use Bit Torrent! (there are dedicated seeders running) - babbling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Just get Ubuntu and install a different theme. There should be plenty to choose from.
Suppose you don't like the look of Windows, you can just get a different theme, right? Same thing here. - tyrell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Best ... GNU/Linux.. distro.. ever
Please organize a release party in your area to celebrate (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DapperReleaseParties) and don't forget to download, burn and share Cd's with those who are less fortunate. This IS "Linux for Human Beings" after all :) - arizonagroove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9"Where are the live disks though?"
It's now called the desktop cd. - linshots, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14screenshots: http://shots.osdir.com/slideshows/slideshow.php?release=659&slide=4&title=ubuntu+6.06+screenshots
- thecwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Should work with 3 out of the box, 1 will require installation of the driver. Not sure about 2, but if it does it will likely require installation of some sort of TV card program like tvtime.
- paulca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Main site just updated now!
http://www.ubuntu.com/download - IppatsuMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Torrents of the DVD version:
http://torrent.ubuntu.com/releases/dapper/release/dvd/
(i386, amd64, powerpc) - noamsml, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8OK, cool, I'll just fire up my apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade ;-)
- cazabam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9in order:
1) it's slow - No it's not. Not much else I can say, either you believe me or you don't, but why not try it?
2) it's brown - Yes, but it has other themes ... or you could use Xubuntu, Kubuntu or even Edubuntu for different defaults
3) build-essential not installed - so install it! It's one command, or a single package in Synaptic
I have to say I didn't know what to expect, but I installed the RC and was blown away by it. It boots faster than any other linux distro, it's polished to a shine and everything 'just works' (with the exception of my particularly troublesome wifi card, which took 5 minutes to sort).
@geminem - you're downloading tarballs?!? Why not download the prebuild packages directly from the repositories and install them with dpkg. It reduces installation to one command, and it's the same command for everything.
Linky: http://linuxhelp.blogspot.com/2005/12/concise-apt-get-dpkg-primer-for-new.html - henry95, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Ubuntu is a great distro. I digg it.
- barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7for those using breazy the apt-get update and apt-get upgrade that will not work as expected,
use this method instead

- OtonVM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Great! Time to switch to Ubuntu!

- Snakedal337, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8As other said before me , Easy Ubuntu > Automatix

This site is now showing the proper Ubuntu 6.06 release. - babbling, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I'm making some yummy pizza to celebrate.
Here's a pizza dough recipe that's meant to be pretty good:
http://www.fabulousfoods.com/recipes/breads/yeast/pizzadough.html - babbling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I think the LiveCD is merged with the install CD. In fact, apparently there's even a feature where you can launch the LiveCD, and install Ubuntu while using it (from the LiveCD) for other stuff!
- dipswitch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+76.06 is a lot faster then previous releases, the desktop theme in 6.06 is brown and orange, with new icons, a new application theme and a new window decoration, build-essential is not installed by default for good reason (but included on the install CD).
That, and tonnes of other improvements. - valona, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Wow, all the hot chicks will be getting naked at my Dapper release party. My spread firefox party was like something from the last days of the Roman Empire, a complete orgy of open source over-indulgence.
- pHr34kY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Okay, just reformatted, reinstalled, and back with a clean install of Ubuntu... it took about 20 minutes all up (that was so quick!).
I laughed when I found there was already was already an updated package in the apt sources by the time I had it installed.
OMG I'm so hyped! - nonokiaboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6what a great day, the DS launches in australia (lite) & in the evening Ubuntu launches. Whoo hoo!
+dugg - noamsml, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Hmm.. I could celebrate it by being a dapper for one day (believe me, people WILL notice)
- gadgetuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Hi geminem,
Sorry, I missed that you were offline.
Chances are that booting from the new cd will have the upgrade option - they certainly used to. If not, boot normally, pop in the new cd then go to "System>Preferences>Synaptic package manager". Once that's open click "settings > repositories" then click the "add cd-rom" button. Once that's finished make sure the new cd has a tick next to it in the main Synaptic window and click "reload". Then click "mark all upgrades" and "apply". That should do it, if not try my first suggestion afterwards because the new cd is now a valid repository for apt-get to use so it should upgrade. - Kwipper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Cool. Now comes the question if this verison will work with my....
1.) ATI Radeon X850 Graphics Card
2.) ATI TV Wonder Pro
3.) Sound Blaster Audigy 4 Sound Card
after installation. - macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5hats off to the responsible crews
- tedwardo2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6There's a list of major changes here:

- ElJefeGrande, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wireless configuration with WPA is still a bitch to setup. I followed the arduous yet simple directions here to set up my IBM T41 for WPA and NetworkManager (and it works!)

Normally your install CD is in the respository. Just change the entry for the Breezy CD to the Dapper CD. Put in the CD then run sun apt-get update then sudo apt-get dist-upgrade and it should ask for the CD. You should be good to go.
(It may just ask you if you want to upgrade when you put the CD in, I'm not sure. I've never upgraded with the CD) - dipswitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Open synaptic package manager and hit the reload button. Plenty of new packages since then.
- Trjn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I was wondering why there were a few torrents for this on demonoid earlier.
Time to get my little brother on it, he's been thinking about switching to Linux and I was waiting until this release before getting him to use Ubuntu. - jessejoedotcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Here's the official release annoncement: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-announce/2006-June/000083.html
Automatix does work in Dapper now - http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=177646 - FuManchu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The great Fu was wrong!
Mark it on your calendars, boys & girls. The great Fu was all but certain that they couldn't possible make it by June 1st.
I have never been more pleased to have been proved mistaken!
Like apu95, I'm hoping that the Intel 2200BG support will be there. I already scrunched up my Windows ntfs install on my Toshiba laptop [With GPartEd 2.5] and repartitioned the rest of the HDD in anticipation of this release. Linux laptop finally! I hope.
Kudos to the Ubuntu teams, especially the ducklings who worked their tails off to to the last hour to make this happen!! - tnerb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4geminem,
if you read the major changes link that was given above it lists the following
***************
Installation and Upgrades
* Ubuntu can now be installed to USB devices, such as removable
hard drives and flash memory, using the text-mode installer
* A new upgrade tool is available, for simple, clean and reliable
upgrades from one Ubuntu release to the next, starting with
Ubuntu 5.10
* The alternate installer now runs in a single stage, rebooting
straight into the complete system. This makes it faster,
simpler, and more reliable.
******************** - dipswitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The BugSquad team has done a *lot* of great work.
Give it a try - sbutcher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Get some ideas here:
