- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7This will go great with my SOFA and BOOK servers.

"Also in 6.06 (Dapper Drake) you have the option of choosing to install a LAMP setup at the inital Ubuntu installation screen." - eklitzke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I installed the Ubuntu server edition on an old computer I had laying around yesterday. I figured I might as well grab the Dapper release candidate, since Daper is coming out on Thursday, and in the release candidate CD one of the options I got at boot time was to "Install a LAMP server" (in addition to the regular "Server installation" option).
It struck me as a sort of odd thing to do. Most of the time you spend setting up a LAMP server is setting up all the AMP components to run how you want them to -- it probably doesn't take any more than a minute to apt-get the packages you need. - vh1`, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I installed with the server option from breezy once before and it was using a ridiculously large amount of resources just doing nothing. no LAMP or anything, just sitting there at the CLI.
I moved on to gentoo, but I look forward to trying the server option of dapper - burke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5nice. apt-get install lamp?
- JohnnyVu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Horrible acronym, worst than IANAL
LAMP = Linux Apache MySQL Perl/PHP/... - IMesh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think it's a fine acronym. I hate acornyms that you can't say. And what the hell do you mean Linux,Apach,mod_perl is more powerful? Mod_Perl doesn't do the same thing as MySQL THAT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE.
- kevthecatslayer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love LAMP... stack
- nbx909, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3sadly no, it's only on the server version as an install option
- dharm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well in a small setup, i can see this beeing helpful (not for me, but for others)
but idealy, you want to seperate your systems, customize and optimize each seperately, then integrate them together... and them optimize as a whole
lamp is not that hard to get started, thats why its an acronym, cause its that simple to setup apache mysql and php on linux... - JohnnyVu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This server will sure shine out over its competitors
- xiangxianni, on 01/04/2009, -0/+1I am still using 6.06.It's very stable.
http://www.tips5.com - midwinter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The time I tried a Ubuntu server (minimal) install it booted up with what seemed like Bluetooth and HP printer services? I thought it kind of odd. Not exactly minimal is it? Unless I got that wrong..
Using Arch Linux now anyway, it's more my thing. - Dagur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1python, perl, php, ruby?
- coding, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nothing's worse than IANAL
- eklitzke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2While I am a big fan of both Arch (what I use at home) and Gentoo (what I use at work), I have to say that your criticisms of Ubuntu are unfounded. As I mentioned earlier in the thread, I recently installed Dapper server on an old laptop I had sitting around. By default it booted into runlevel 2 and had almost nothing running. It uses ~60 MB of RAM. While older versions started a lot of unecessary crap, this problem seems to have been done away with in Dapper (at least the server edition).
EDIT: oops, meant to reply to the above thread. - sud0n1m, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I just installed a server using their LAMP default config - it was pretty darn easy, however it doesnt install a few things - like an FTP server, SSH etc... it's not a big deal, but you are not ready to be a web host yet with the basic LAMP install. It's an excellent starting point though since this is what a lot of people do with their Ubuntu servers.
- 32bitwonder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If they go to the trouble of helping to install the LAMP stack (which isn't at all difficult with apt-get in the first place), do they also go as far as to help secure your new server with Bastille Linux etc?
- I922sParkCir, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Thats pretty funny.
- gorkish, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Am I the only one who hates this stupid LAMP acronym? Probably not, but maybe I am the only one who thinks of it as "Linux, Apache, mod_perl" though... IMO a much more powerful combo!
- JohnnyVu, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Yep, screw cops. I got a jay-walking and speeding ticket from those corrupt, over-paid *****.
- 2phat4u2, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0Yes, it da sofa king!
- 2phat4u2, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4How does it help me install IIS?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+0I use XAMPP
It works for Linux, Mac OS X, Windows, and Solaris.
