- celticeric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Great news since ubuntuguide.org is always near the top of search results and so I suspect it's the one that newbies find first.
- orvs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The official unofficial Ubuntu guide :)
really nice :) - kdehead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4yes is it isnt "official". it always been independent of Ubuntu itself.
great to see it updated to Dapper 6.06 - davymac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Totally for linux/ubuntu n00bs like me. At the top of the search results on google and very helpful. I actually just installed for the first time since the version 4 days, I believe, 2 days ago. Although I'm jumping back and forth between KDE and Gnome... argh.. so hard to decide..
- oringo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Is it really news? It looks almost identical to this website: http://easylinux.info/wiki/Ubuntu_dapper
Even the same mini-icons. I know the old ubuntuguide.org has been around for a while, and both the new site and easylinux site's content look extreme similar to the old site. I am still quite confused, maybe both are from the same source? - utopicillusion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The desktop guide is already installed on the system, and it covers almost all of these topic.
Also available at: http://help.ubuntu.com/ - Quash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The desktop guide does not cover all repos and non-official packages. Ubuntuguide.org does. Each has their place and both are good, imho. They complement each other.
- tanglang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The first thing I read on the website ist "unoffical". So I guess it is not "The offical Ubuntu Guide" ;)
- Quash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3easylinux.info is a mirror of ubuntuguide.org. Easylinux.info and Chua at ubuntuguide.org have joined forces to revive ubuntuguide.org. Easylinux.info was the first to take over Chua's guide when he stopped working on it, so there's never been a break. Now, both are coming together.
- dolson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4What's wrong with the official wiki.ubuntu.com?
- Quash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ubuntuguide.org is back up. Digg Effect showed its muscle. :)
In response to an above poster, the wiki.ubuntu.com is a good guide. But, it has a different purpose. ubuntuguide.org is intended to be inclusive of all third-party options. ;) Each has their place and role. It's not about one being better than the other.
The move from html to wiki may create a load issue, as someone above suggested, but the advantage of allowing anyone to contribute outweights this disadvantage, I think. The one weakness of the original ubuntuguide.org is that only one person could update it. In fairness to Chua, he was incredibly responsive to suggestions, so this wasn't actually an issue. But, allowing anyone to contribute now brings the guide to the place it should be, I think, making it community-driven in the true sense.
Q. - vinz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think Ubuntuguide.org is a good resource for the newbie of Ubuntu operating system. I am happy that it came back.
- 343GuiltySpark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2UbuntuGuide.org is one of the first and best resources I found for Ubuntu when I installed Breezy, glad to see it's been wikified and updated.
- kdehead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2not a good idea for ubuntuguide to move to wiki format. the older , flat html page would have been better able to handle the traffic load.
- chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Quash, thank you very much for the info. I'm very glad to hear that it is a mirror rather than a needless wiki split.
- kdehead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2the new gnome does rock alright. first gnome version i've really stuck to and used everyday...
( i've been a KDE /Mandrake user since around 2000/2001) - kdehead, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3try navigating through that wiki
with ubuntuguide its all on one page. - dolson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OK, so what? Why couldn't this stuff have simply been added into the official wiki, all on one page?
- LegendarySock, on 10/12/2007, -2/+365 diggs later...
UbuntuGuide.org Dead After Digg Effect - chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Check out the edit dates. EasyLinux.info did all this work months ago before it was copied.
Also, the scripts in the commands at UbuntuGuide are hosted on easylinux.info.
Not that I am against duplication of efforts in OSS, but this a wiki - there seems no reason for them to have copied it and claim it as their own. They can edit and improve it just like the rest of us, but instead they split the wiki in two. If I add info, do I have to add it to both sites, or will one sync with the other?
When I contribute, it will be to EasyLinux, and UbuntuGuide can just keep copying the info over to their site. - Quash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think it's also important to mention that help.ubuntu.com and wiki.ubuntu.com don't have the same design principle. Ubuntuguide.org has always been command-driven without tonnes of background explanation, so users can quickly find an answer and resolve an issue.
Q: How Do I? A: use this command.
Again, people can easily point to the strengths and weaknesses of either approach. But, neither is better or worse - just different. Certain users will prefer one method over the other and that's fine.
Same goes for third-party packages, repos and commands. Some people would prefer the purity of the official Ubuntu docs. Others are more interested in getting all those proprietary issues dealt with immediately. Each approach meets the needs of different users. - DiamondIce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Poor ubuntuguide, they just get all nice and set up for dapper and digg goes and kicks them in the pills.
- lpcustom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't you have something to add to the conversation? Ubuntu is one of the best Linux Distros in existence. Obviously the popularity shows here on Digg. If you don't like it, don't click the little "comments" link. Someone needs to set up a digg or slashdot type site for idiots. These two sites are about tech news. Post something intelligent.
Now to actually talk about the topic: The unofficial ubuntu guide actually helped me learn more about linux. If I remember correctly, some people didn't like it before because it told you how to do something but didn't tell you why it's done a particular way. I think the way it give the answers in a simple context makes it easier to pick up. Plus you make your base ubuntu install a hell of a lot more functional in the process. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3they should have ran the server on Slackware.
- Quash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Questionable packages, the repos that store them and info on how to, umm, install said packages can't be added to the official wiki. Different needs for different users.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yes, I was also wondering what's wrong with the official Ubuntu Wiki? Will there be 2x the same content or will people duplicate efforts? I liked the 1-page Ubuntu Guide, it was fast and simple. I'm puzzled.
- macewan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2looks like it has officially been knocked off line
- Aklblue, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Hey don't go telling the Windows guys about Ubuntu .. lets keep it secret !!
- Quash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Nothing, unless you're an idiot with the attention span and intellect of a gnat...which would seem to be 80% of the current Ubuntu converts."
Ah, just when you think we're all done with them, along comes another Linux snob to insult people curious enough to try out a Linux distribution. These are the guys who have always given Linux a bad name. Death to Linux Snobs. - d3ik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yeah, plus the whole idea behind a wiki is dividing pages by content... so all those "how to" links should go to their own page so that procedure changes can be captured more easily.
With the wiki setup as it is changes to individual "how tos" will be captured as a "main page" revision, making it harder to revert if necessary. - jwoelich, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Nothing, unless you're an idiot with the attention span and intellect of a gnat...which would seem to be 80% of the current Ubuntu converts.
- Quash, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Yes, I should have been clearer. ;) The official unofficial Ubuntu guide. That's what I meant. :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Enough of the ubuntu stories already. Don't you ***** kids have a forum or #room you can do this ***** in??
