http://finances-business.blogspot.com/2007/09/linu ... - Dispersion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just switched to Ubuntu from SuSe. The best part about Ubuntu is all the community support lying around. I had zero problems getting everything, including video, working just by following walkthroughs found through Google.

The same could be said for Macs if you had never heard common Mac terminology before. In fact, Macs *do* confuse me :)
"ubuntu isn't that great and I'm convinced once the people learn some more about Linux they will realize that too."
I've been a Linux admin for six years, running Red Hat first and now Debian servers. I think you're wrong. Ubuntu runs very well for me and I'd rather not spend time messing around with the system like I would do with straight Debian, Red Hat or nearly any other distro. Suse is the next best thing to Ubuntu, but it's not perfect. - j.carcinogen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the ati driver for linux works fine for me. but yeah ubuntu makes an awesome word processor.
- stewacide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So long as you know to enable all the package repositories (e.g. the ones the free software Nazis as Ubuntu disable by default) and get for example the real commercial (but still free) video drivers for your system, Sun Java, Macromedia Flash, etc. everything should be fine. Easily the best designed Linux distro' out there: converted me from KDE to Gnome when in Linux (I've tried Kubuntu but it's not as nice).
- Arevos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mm... apt. Certainly an big improvement over Yum and Yast.
- clevershark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Slack still rules.
- madnoh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've had Ubuntu on my office desktop for half a year now and I'm lovin' it. I have had no issues with high-end video cards because I use the intergrated VGA on the mobo, which suits me fine for office work :)
- deBeuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There is no "best linux distro" for /every/ type of small business out there. Most businesses require a bit more then just mail, a browser, an office suite, IM and printing.
- DangerX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ubuntu is a great all around distro. Easy to learn for email-checking senior citizens but very customizable for those who like to tinker and use the CLI.
I have it running on 2 PCs at home (AMD XP 3200 and AMD XP 2000) and it runs great. Getting the ATI 3D drivers is a chore but there's lots of community support and the Ubuntu forums are incredibly helpful.
I loves the Ubuntu. - JohnnySoftware, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It would have been nicer if they had included Red Hat's free Fedora Core 4 in their Linux distros evaluation.
- stringless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes,I am using ubuntu on my Acer Travelmate and it is working fine. It did not detect my modem, though.
- MonkeyFit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0especially since you got a Live AND Installation CD. I ordered them in September and got them at about the middle of November. Considering they didn't even ship till early to mid October, It took about 4-6 weeks for them to get to Alaska. By that time I had already downloaded Kubuntu because i couldn't wait. But it's nice to know I already have a distro if I upgrade to an Athlon 64. And I may install it on my mom's iBook.
- Elock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was able to get java installed and working fairly easily once I upgraded to Beezy, but I had no such luck in hoary
- seaniz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anybody have experience installing Ubuntu on an Acer laptop? I'm thinking about doing this but I'll be moving to a place with no internet connection in a month, so I'm not sure it will be worth it.
I don't know what the heck most of you guys are talking about . . . Guess that's the problem with Linux it's so hard to get into it. - MonkeyFit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ok
i'm stupid
i should have googled before i posted
it is Automatix (no r what-so-ever) - rousehouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0From the article: "When choosing an operating system for your business, local support may be crucial. For instance, there may be Windows applications that need to be ported, or run in a Windows emulator on Linux. In which case you may need an integrator with experience in your particular line of business."
So, if you have an expert on site, you're ready to go. Well, that's exactly the problem for a lot of small businesses. That is also what prevents it from being a viable option for many small businesses in the "real world". - thmitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The article is very light on details about it seems they prefer Ubuntu because it is free. What about the free versions of Mandriva, SUSE and Fedora/Red Hat? Ubuntu is a good distro but it always seemed to lack the config tools I wanted. 5.10 is a big improvement in that regard but I am still sticking with PCLinuxOS.
- WiskyDrinker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ubuntu is simply the best distro right now. If you know what you are doing, everything works perfect.
- dknighton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One of the big selling points for Linux is that you don't need the latest hardware to run it. Since most people use a windows-based PC as their primary computer, if they want Linux they typically put it on an older machine or one that is built from spare parts.
That leads me to believe that the people here who are bitching about problems may be trying to install Linux on some old, beat-up, P.O.S. computer that had problems to begin with, thus the issues.
Surely there are compatibility issues and such, but Linux is not a cure for your old, ***** hardware. Maybe try running the system on a reasonably new system and see what happens. - barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"So long as you know to enable all the package repositories (e.g. the ones the free software Nazis as Ubuntu disable by default)"
If you're gonna call anyone nazis call the company that uses restrictive licensing nazis - AdamCo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Home users could do a lot worse, and even IT managers may learn to love it." - Talk about Suse Linux 10
After talking good about Suse 10, to me that sentence makes it sound bad. Especially after they call it "a close second". Maybe I am interpreting it wrong though. I love Suse, but I'd like to try ubuntu also, I've heard nothing but good things about it. - aaarg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ubuntu is a great distro with a 6 month release cycle and 3 year (i think) support of older versions...that is fantastic and beats m$ hands down. i have installed it on multiple machines and the only thing i have trouble with is my laptop video card (via unichrome pro) everything else "just works." on top of all of this, 5.10 includes ndiswrapper and all my wireless cards work fresh from install.
- Aldmal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been messing around with Linux for about a year now, despartly trying to get something that has nothing to do with that monster in Redmound.
Last month I down loaded Ubuntu 5.1 and installed it on my older PC (Athalon XP 1600, GeForce 5200). It runs great. The install dedected all my hardware, even my Palm.
The install process walked me through the entire process of setting up partitions, boot manager and seting up the desktop. In about an hour I had it up and running. A little messing around with fine tuning it (lots of help on the web) and am very pleased with the results.
I don't want to be an operating system expert. I want my PC to do the tasks that earn me money. I've downloaded some additional apps. I am close to having a machine that I can use everyday.
I think Ubuntu is great. This distro is aimed at getting a working Linux machine for the masses and does it well. A few more apps (not Ubuntu's fault) and I will never go near Vista. - stunder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have been using ubuntu for about 10 months now and I think its the greats desktop/laptop distro ever. I haven't touched windows since then. I really think its just a mind set and you have to tell yourself I am going to make the commitment to linux and just do it.
- Wasted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0timbtwisted: sssst AOL can hear you.
- qx4_man, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been a user of Fedora Core since Core 3... however, after having Ubuntu 5.1 successfully recognize the hardware when installed on two different laptops, I decided to switch. I also now prefer apt, using synaptic and Ubuntu's update manager, over yum.
Everything just works... and the support forums are great!
My only gripe is that the final release of OpenOffice 2.0 is not part of the standard install, but that is easy to fix. - Duelus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have a Radeon 9800 Pro with 256 Ram and I am running ubuntu 5.10. You should be able to use these commands in the consle to get your ATI drivers to work.
1.
Install the xorg-driver-fglrx package:
sudo apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx
2.
Add fglrx to /etc/modules:
echo fglrx | sudo tee -a /etc/modules
*
This command won't have any effect until you reboot. To load the kernel module immediately, run sudo depmod -a ; sudo modprobe fglrx, but this will only work if you have already rebooted since upgrading the kernel. If it doesn't work, perform the next step (below) and then reboot.
3.
Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and change "ati" to "fglrx", perhaps with a command like: sudo sed -i -e 's/"ati"/"fglrx"/' /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Alternatively, just use your favourite text editor, or use sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and select "fglrx" instead of "ati".
4.
Restart your machine - qx4_man, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0antiwmac, why should I be forced to recompile my kernal to support various hardware? it should be the design goal of any OS, especially those that want to be used as a desktop OS, to "just work"!
Fedora was great, don't get me wrong, but Ubuntu just does things better IMHO.
For Linux to be a success as a desktop OS, it's time break out of the traditional hacker mentality. - chrisbudden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have used Ubuntu since August this year, and really like it, just for the fact hardware just works. I have tried Fedora but I had real trouble getting my wireless card to work, so stopped using that. Then I tried SUSE, which also I couldn't get to work (still a noob). As Ubuntu supports IPW2200 out of the box, I could get to explore Linux more and more and probably could get my wireless card working in SUSE and Fedora. Thumbs up Ubuntu!
- MonkeyFit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"ATI does not support linux."
To my knowledge, ATI does support linux. They have proprietary linux drivers on their site, in addition to the X drivers. It's just that the proprietary drivers are ***** and so almost everyone uses X. Though maybe I'm wrong. - jdong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ATI does support Linux to a certain extent, but it's commonly accepted amongst Linux users that its support is of a much lower priority/quality than their competitor NVidia's.
It took them a ridiculously long time to catch on to kernel 2.6, and even a longer time to figure out that most people are using Xorg now :) - mydave, on 08/06/2008, -0/+0hmmmmmm interesting, but I think Vista is the best!

i donno about ubuntu. but gentoo.
flash wont work unless you use 32bit emulation(firefox-bin) because flash is not opensource and not coded for 64bit.
java is not ported to 64bit yet.
ATI does not support linux. so linux is supporting ATI. and there are some tools availalbe. you can google about it. or read the gentoo documentation(i know your on ubuntu, but gentoo has good docs and anyother distro) - Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I have an Nvidia card, so that worked fine out of the box, and I was able to get Flash and Java easily with apt-get. But getting videos and MP3's to play was a real bitch.
- antiwmac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0lol... why do people like
fedora didnt support this hardware... so I moved to ubuntu.. and it worked!!
or something like that... hardware drivers are in linux kernel morons!
you just need to know how to recompile kernel (wont take a min) and how to use menuconfig(easy easy) - MonkeyFit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0@ 7of7
I play with Linux specifically to tinker. I got bored with Windows and began breaking it to give myself something to do (moving the location of the Program Files folder is not a good idea). And I will look up Automatrix (I'm assuming you forgot the "r"). And I don't use apt-get. I use the bundled update manager. The 3D thing is my only major complaint with Ubuntu and it's mainly cause ATI won't give good linux support for their hardware. I'm not hating. Read the last sentence of my previous post. - thisnameisfake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0ubuntu isn't that great and I'm convinced once the people learn some more about Linux they will realize that too. I for one have only had problems with it.
1. on some PCs[mine] the install CD doesn't boot right. All it does is load and puts red squares on the screen.
And once I do some googling and insatll it.
2. it's dog slow on my P4 1.6Ghz with 768MB of ram.
3. it kicks way more than it should.
Arch runs faster on my dual P2 266Mhz with 160MB of ram than ubuntu ran on my P4. - ccunni, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1i cannot stand this distro, mandriva, fd3, fbsd and gentoo are by far a better representation of linux and usability. Ubuntu is for senior citizens who cant afford the xp cd or the dsl to pirate it. so they request an unbuntu cd (which takes only 12 months to receive) and install it for the soul purpose of checking their email.
- 7of7, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2You guys and your Linux crapola. First of all, quit using apt-get if you want a functional operating system. Sure, it's fine if you want to tinker with your crap, but if you want to play MP3s, get the Automatix script which basically optimizes your Ubuntu system. It's easy. Ubuntu is designed for normal people. I know you hate normal operating systems because they don't make you feel like a bigshot hacker, but seriously, this is out of control when you start hating on your own operating systems.
- JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0This is just my experience with Ubuntu,
but I cannot get my ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128 fully working with 3d,
I cannot get Macromedia Flash,
I cannot get java,
working on my AMD Athlon 64..Could just be me... - MonkeyFit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I'm posting from Kubuntu on an Athlon XP 3000+. I can get Flash and Java. Though I can't get my ATI to do 3D properly. My opengl screensavers look perfect in the tiny preview window. But when I test them full screen, most of them are REALLY slooooow. Only a couple work like they're supposed to. Other than that, I really like it.
