- richbradshaw, on 10/10/2007, -6/+2Launchpad won't let me register my GPG key... :(
- justinwray, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0What sort of issue are you having registering your key? Errors? Etc.
- richbradshaw, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1It's OK now - it kept saying Launchpad had an error - I tried again a few times, but with no luck - tried again a few hours later and all was fine!
- justinwray, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0What sort of issue are you having registering your key? Errors? Etc.
- mannaran, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1Drupal based?? If yes, that would be an interesting news..!!
- dchosenb, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4no, not drupal based. powered by Elgg (elgg.org)
- Toshibi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5It's already slow. Can't even get in to register.
- tekrat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19I'm gonna call it: Dead at 7:09 EST
- polyGone, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Well, it was fun while it lasted....
- legogirl, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1didn't last long
- sweetrelease, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1its up again
- tekrat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19I'm gonna call it: Dead at 7:09 EST
- over90000, on 10/10/2007, -40/+3Ah yes, Linux and OSX users are basically cult. You have to wonder why there isn't a windows "social network". It's because they are too busy being productive.
- damazepro, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8yeah Micro$hit spawning all those viruses...
- over90000, on 10/10/2007, -20/+0Window Viruses are the work of Linux and Mac fanboys who can't stand to see Microsoft at the top. Windows users just install an anti-virus and get on with their work.
- Narwaffle, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5It's a conspiracy!
- sweetrelease, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5oh yah, god forbid someone wants an OS thats secure enough that i dont have to invest half my resources into an outside program to protect it
- over90000, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0@sweetrelease: do you realize that there are free anti virus software available that are even better than commercial software like norton or mcafee?
- shavenlunatic, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2i assumed by "resources" he meant system resource.. not piles of gold...
- sweetrelease, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I did mean system resources, but I do have piles of gold.
And ladies, I'm single. ; )
- sweetrelease, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I did mean system resources, but I do have piles of gold.
- over90000, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0free antiviruses don't take much resources. In today's world of 2GB+ RAM there is hardly a dent in overall system performance.
- wigren, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Even still I'd rather have those resources open to other more useful tasks.
- over90000, on 10/10/2007, -4/+0you should probably close that HD gay porn you are watching then.
- over90000, on 10/10/2007, -20/+0Window Viruses are the work of Linux and Mac fanboys who can't stand to see Microsoft at the top. Windows users just install an anti-virus and get on with their work.
- majorca, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9It is because windows users have enough trouble trying to open email and understand the basic functionality of Word. effing luddites.
- over90000, on 10/10/2007, -10/+0Windows has one of the best email program. And the ribbon interface in the new Word is really intuitive and user friendly.
- arbulus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Thunderbird?
- over90000, on 10/10/2007, -10/+0Windows has one of the best email program. And the ribbon interface in the new Word is really intuitive and user friendly.
- egroeggnik, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6My thought is that they're too busy rebooting.
- ZeRux, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1There isn't one because Windows users are fulfilling their social needs by getting outside, instead of spending even more time in front of their computers.
- arbulus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3First, people don't use windows because they choose it, they use it because they're stuck with it which precludes a real fanbase.
Second, I really hope that you forgot your /sarcasm tag. - deadlikeoscar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2No, the average Windows user is too busy asking me to fix their malware infested computer. I have 5 to fix, this week alone. The "average" Windows user is not a power user. I'm sure that most reading this comment are not "average" users and know their way around a Windows box, however.
- justinwray, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1They are all too busy on myspace.
- mossblaser, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0There are - they are the massive forums which contain instructions on how to remove malware. Seriously - thats what windows has for social networking...
- damazepro, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8yeah Micro$hit spawning all those viruses...
- brim4brim, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Its gone down.
- over90000, on 10/10/2007, -8/+1Who says Linux servers don't crash.
- lifewithryan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4man, you're just a glutton for punishment aren't ya?
I'd be willing to bet that that the infrastructure was architected to handle the digg effect (obviously) and I'll further bet that it served up more pages and handled more requests than an equivalent windows box would have. You're only upset because you still think that linux is just a command line OS...and since you probably can't even grasp how to use the DOS command line, you're scared to try anything else...
now go tweak your free virus scanner that you love so dearly and leave those of us who are competent alone.
- lifewithryan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4man, you're just a glutton for punishment aren't ya?
- over90000, on 10/10/2007, -8/+1Who says Linux servers don't crash.
- dchosenb, on 10/10/2007, -4/+39hey folks. I'm one of the Ubuntero.com developers. Yes we seem to be going down, unfortunately. I'm looking into a server upgrade, possibly reconfiguration. Hope to be back up soon. Thanks to everyone that has already stopped by :) I'd say bookmark the site (or just this digg) if you can't get in.
- Smokersroom, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16Get back to work!
:)- mannaran, on 10/10/2007, -5/+0Don't be too hard on him..!! :(
- ZeRux, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11You could say that to at least half of us digg users.
- m3mn0n, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10I wish you luck in your quest. May the Ubuntu be with you.
- crisrose, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0"one of" or "the" ? ;)
- lifewithryan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4so what sort of hardware setup do you have in back of this thing? just curious
- bzaks, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Oh man, I really hope they're using Ubuntu server.... hahahahahah, That'd be a bit of irony if they weren't...
- andrewski, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Yes, we are.
- Smokersroom, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16Get back to work!
- eliosh, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2Down at 13.25 CEST

- X111, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Ubunterohno
- migla, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3What are the (planned) major differences between ubuntero.com and ubuntu-users.org ?
- m3mn0n, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4A domain name that's more appealing, for starters.
- akkibaba, on 10/10/2007, -3/+30There's already an Ubuntu Social Network : It's called the Digg front page.
- airstrike, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3come on, everyone knows apple owns digg..
- dyl8n, on 10/10/2007, -8/+1finally! a fan club for all the fanboys!
- arbulus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1why are you here?
- gordonf238, on 10/10/2007, -17/+2Ubuntu this, Ubuntu that. As great as open-source software is, Linux has a long way to go before it looks (and functions intuitively) as OS X.
- dcherryholmes, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I'm not an OSX user, although I occasionally support some people who use it. The whole "it's so intuitive!" thing is something I never really got. I mean, I'm a *nix sysadmin and have been messing with computers since the TRS-80 and Commodore PET days in the 70's, so I've had my hands on a lot of different platforms over the years. OSX is nice, for sure, but it has never struck me as especially "intuitive". Care to elaborate?
- Chift, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2haha, Ubuntu Fan Boys Unite! Digg gordonf238 down.
On a serious note. I think it all comes down to what you're used to. I sit at an osx box and I NEED a terminal open to do anything because I have no clue where anything is. While i'm in linux (slackware specifically) running fluxbox I have everything at the tip of a finger with shortcut keys. - OsakaWilson, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Got to agree with Hide. My first modern computer was an Apple, but I was forced to switch to Windows to keep up with my field. I went kicking and screaming. After being away from Apple for several years and trying to use it again I found that it is not any more intuitive than Windows. Last year I switched to Ubuntu. Ubuntu has some annoying points, but I got right on it and was productive right away. Still when I have to use an Apple, I get stuck doing the most basic things. OSX is only intuitive to those who are using it regularly, which means that it isn't intuitive at all.
- lifewithryan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2I'll give you that apple is pretty...but way overpriced for what you get. On top of that, the "intuitive" argument has been done to death, and the truth of the matter is, intuitive is a relative term. Sit your non-techie mother/grandma/sister/friend down in front of the thing and see how flippin' intuitive it is? They're still gonna ask you the same question: "Hey fanboy, how the hell do I get on the internet with this thing?"
Now sit a geek down in front of one...hell yeah its intuitive, but to a geek so is Gnome, KDE, Windows....etc - arbulus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I'll just throw in my two cents:
I'm a former/sometimes Mac user. I've used Macs for quite a few years. My most recent boxes were an iMac G5 and a MacBook Pro. I've enjoyed them and found the Mac OS to be incredibly intuitive, secure, and easy to use. But in the last couple of years, I've been toying with Linux, so much so that I recently bought a Dell and installed Ubuntu to use as my main desktop. My wife really enjoys the Mac, so she stuck with that for hers, but I'm Ubuntu only for myself (I also have Ubuntu running a file server box). Day by day, I don't really think about the difference between the two until I start trying to do something on my wife's machine or set something up relating to our networking. I often find myself getting frustrated at the Mac because it won't let me do some of the more advanced things I want to do. I never really thought when I started toying with Ubuntu that I'd find myself looking at the Mac OS in frustration.
Now, please don't misunderstand. I love Macs. I think they are solid machines and the OS is damned fine. I honestly would recommend a Mac to any one who is one of those "I don't care how it works, I just want it to work" folk. I would buy my parents or grandparents a Mac, because they are the most secure and stable out there in the commerical field. But I would recommend Linux to anyone who is an advanced user and/or who is interested in things under the hood. Windows serves a fine purpose on the workplace desktop (though I think that a number of Linux distros could give it a run for its money), and the Mac is great for base to moderately advanced users. Hell, I think even power users would be just fine on a Mac. But the control, the stability, the customizability, the openness that you get from Ubuntu (or any Linux distro) just can't be beat.
I'm always in the mind of "the right tool for the right job" and sometimes Linux isn't the right tool. But for me, I wouldn't have it any other way than Ubuntu. - mossblaser, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Much the same as arbulus myself. I am currently using a macbook (mine) and I have spent a reasonable amt of time using mac os (as long as I have been ubuntu) and I must say some things make more sense - for instance those who feel their way round an operating system to learn it (like I do) ubuntu's plain English approach is great. The mac os icon based approach is all good and well but it requires you to learn it (I mean my FTP client's logo is a duck, my chat client is also a duck, my text editor is a strawberry - wtf is going on there - i know they are the fault of the application makers but the lack of text explanation (unless you browse apps.) is fairly annoying sometimes) Either way i feel mac os is wayy more difficult to use blindly than ubuntu (its still very nice and slick - less inconsistency as in windows (which is a major stumbling point for new users) which is great and it certainly looks as if you paid a ***** load of money for it but ubuntu is a better alternative (well for some things...), almost certainly for power users however mac os is sorta "designed by a designer, for a designer" which means the design apps for mac os are really easily integrated (with regards to UI conventions) however other things like document editing is somewhat annoying (I do love maximize - zoom just doesn't cut it - especially when it just doesn't work).

- drewdiggityyo, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3hope they get it up soon so i can check this out :D

EDIT: Didn't catch it. - remakeru, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2great to see the site down . :P
- OsakaWilson, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10Step 1. Make really cool website.
Step 2. Leave it online long enough to be mirrored.
Step 3. Throw it to the Digg wolves.
Step 4. Watch your site go down, but revel in the knowledge that diggers are checking your mirrored site out and will not forget all about it because someone else came up with a really cool new LOLCAT. - Coy0te, on 10/10/2007, -11/+1Already down? servers must run on Linux...
- Loki, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7How does this keep getting Dugg when the site is down, with no ETA from the developer? Must have been one of the 3 magic words on Digg: Ubuntu, Ron Paul, Linux
- BoredLurker, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Because if you digg an article for a site that is crushed by the digg effect you can go back later when it is up. Just click on your profile then the news tab, and you will see all the article you have dugg. Old ones that were down should now be up.
Welcome to digg.- Loki, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1hmm...don't know about you, I use ctrl+D
welcome to firefox.

- Loki, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I stand corrected. Thanks ;)
- Jasper84, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Actually it was two of the 3 magic words.
- BoredLurker, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Because if you digg an article for a site that is crushed by the digg effect you can go back later when it is up. Just click on your profile then the news tab, and you will see all the article you have dugg. Old ones that were down should now be up.
- Sabretou, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I can't believe Digg killed a goddamned Social Network, however Beta.
- vonskippy, on 10/10/2007, -8/+5Big deal. A place for fawning inept basement dwellers to spout noobage about a lame ass distro.
- Maverick340, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Down , why ? come on ... !
- andrewski, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3This is Andrew, one of the other Ubuntero.com developers. We were able to get more RAM and bandwidth for our server, but your response has been overwhelming! (Thanks!) So we're still down.
We're looking at more permanent solutions and should be up very soon. All that we ask is that if you're interested, check back soon!- justinwray, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Thanks for the update. I look forward to seeing Ubuntero back up and online.
- andrewski, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's been a busy day, but we should have things back up and running. Thanks again for the support and enjoy the site!
- rdoggsv, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1R.I.P
Now lets go back to ubuntu-users.org - Cipher054, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1why not a social-networking for Gnu/linux users, and not only for ubuntu users ???
- andyduncan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4The first social network guaranteed to NOT get you laid.
- fortezza, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Social network for the socially challenged. The site reacted to social interaction in pretty much the same way its users do. It couldn't handle it.
- Diggingspoon, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1You're still spamming Digg with this? It still sucks, it's still a stupid idea, and we still don't care.
- justinwray, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1http://ubuntero.com is now back up and running...
- raindoll, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0If you wanna see a great linux website try this one:
http://www.iamlinux.org
They currently have 50000+ news indexed since May 2007, looks very promising
Digg is coming to a city (and computer) near you! Check out all the details on our
