- arbulus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+23I'll bet your mom knows how to use the reply button.
- SweetMercury, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20Yeah, because most of the end-users don't look at the source, even Linux-geeks.
- schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -6/+26Can there be any easter eggs in open source? The code is right there, available for viewing, but then again, OpenOffice had those too (spaceships).
- livevil, on 10/11/2007, -21/+39Your mom is slow.
- nights0223, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19Here's another one:
type "zenity --about" in a terminal, and when the box pops up, type "zen". - vroom101, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15Ok, what's the secret code to turn off Wanda the Fish?
- jtorkbob, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16Interesting, wonder where these are stashed. Works on my gnome-light based Gentoo box.
Since the site is hurting, here's the text:
Want to have a little bit of fun with your Gnome desktop? here are a few easter eggs for you.
First, hit the Alt-F2 keys together to bring up the Run Applications dialog.
Type “gegls from outer space” (sans quotes) and hit the enter key. You should get the below game, a la space invaders.
gegls.png
Next, try typing “free the fish” (sans quotes) into the Run Applications box. You’ll get Wanda on your desktop. Here she is checking out my Zen Stone.
wanda.png - nights0223, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13Yeah, it seems she comes back.
Try "killall gnome-panel" - newslang, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Just think about that headline for a moment. How much of a geek do you have to be to understand that?
I love it. - allywilson, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11I've been using Gnome for years - and never knew about this. Classic! Good find :-)
- ATH025, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Clicking on her only works temporarily.....
- harlowsmonkeys, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8You say the NSA can hide things in SELinux, which is open source, so why couldn't easter eggs be hidden?
- capiCrimm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8apt has Super Cow Powers, and aptitude doesn't :'(
- Scyth3, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Here's links to the Eegg's site since it'll better handle the traffic.

http://www.eeggs.com/items/47882.html //Galaxian-like Game - BJ_Blaskowitz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Another egg that I came across was similar to the gegls game (I'm working from memory here):
Right click on the Gnome Panel and click properties.
There should be 2 tabs one for selecting background and another which I've forgotten.
Double right-click on the empty space right beside the two tabs and a little animation (perhaps the same game?) should pop up.
This was on 6.06 so it might not work anymore, and I've switched to KDE since then so the instructions are a bit sketchy. - MasteRR, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8OpenOffice.org has an easter egg, too.
Found here: http://www.eeggs.com/items/45596.html
"1. create a new sheetin openoffice.org Calc (spreadsheet)
2. enter this formula in a cell :
=game()
and validate (validation button or enter)
3.the cell will display "say what?"
4. Enter this formula:
=GAME("StarWars")
5. a new window will open with a little game star war game.
6. But if you type again this formula, the cell will return the display "oh no, not again!"
7. to be able to play again, you need to close the file, close openoffice.org and the QuickStarter, and then make the same." - jtorkbob, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Heck, even in closed source software you can use tools to extract the text and other contents from the compiled files, in order to identify hidden features or flaws.
- MasteRR, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Who seriously searches through source code looking for these sorts of things?
- taoufix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4http://www.google.com/codesearch?q=%22free+the+fish%22&hl=en&btnG=Search+Code
- Sabretou, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I have a very strong feeling that when you were asked what operating system you'd like on your system, you replied "World of Warcraft".
- trusttimothy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I hope nobody tries this out. ^^ I guess there are a lot of people these days using Ubuntu, not knowing what "rm -rf /" actually does: deleting your root-partition without further warning.
- xxNIRVANAxx, on 10/11/2007, -6/+10rm -rf /
- shredswithpiks, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3gnomes don't lay eggs.

Ever hear of Space Invaders?
Kids these days. Sheesh. - TrinaryWyrm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3lol this is good stuff, I'm glad developers still have a sense of humor
- roemcke, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3OK, i tried to "free the fish". Now, how do I kill it
- antdude, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Mirrors: http://dotcache.com/http://www.arsgeek.com/?p=1996 and http://www.arsgeek.com.nyud.net:8080/?p=1996
- OiPunk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Interesting.. I am running Ubuntu Studio, and the "gegls" command doesn't work. However, the fish does. Curious.
- speaker219, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2That works.
- bobbob1016, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2While I agree with golgotha to some extent, not everyone knows what version of gnome they have. Some distros use older versions of software, such as gnome, since they are more stable. Others use bleeding edge. BJ's saying "This was on 6.06..." could be seen as a misconception that either Linux or Gnome is only for/part of Ubuntu, but it could've been a typo not to include Ubuntu before 6.06.
- vileS, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Works in 2.18.1, Ubuntu 7.04
- erinspice, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Restart your database server, arsgeek!
- neophenix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Kill gnome-panel and let it restart, it is the only way :(
- BJ_Blaskowitz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yeah sorry about that, I've become so used to every Linux article on Digg being about Ubuntu that I slipped up. Also the fact that and I've been up all night studying for an exam enters into it :(.
- amosharper, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Or log out and back in
- hackerssidekick, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It will do a lot! It will remove anything that the user has write permissions on, and because it does it recursively, you'll most likely wipe out your home directory and files within it! Eeek
- Tanath, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Click on it.
- darkphoenix939, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1http://www.google.com/codesearch?hl=en&lr=&q=evil+eggies&btnG=Search
seems there are more in there - schallstrom, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0[smartass_mode]Actually it won't do anything unless they put 'sudo' in front of it.[/smartass_mode]
- golgotha, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1What does Ubuntu have to do with it?
It's like me posting this:
Works in Gnome 2.16.3, Kernel 2.6.20 - juventusc, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I written an article on how to transform the look of your windows pc into ubunto, it even includes beryl in windows.
http://www.theindietribune.com/2007/06/how-to-make-windows-look-like-ubuntu.html - vasillalov, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0You can "scare away" the wanda fish by double clicking on her with the mouse. She changes direction and moves away in a hurry!
- Shootfast, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1right click her
- nights0223, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3Click on her.
- Jeremiah85, on 10/11/2007, -4/+0Just right-click on the fish
- ardnut, on 10/11/2007, -13/+4apt-get install kde
- Godlike, on 10/11/2007, -21/+1I was hoping this was about WoW. Stupid linux.
- brokenspatula, on 10/11/2007, -31/+3That's because she is dead
- RedTroll, on 10/11/2007, -73/+6Oh, that's why GNOME is so ***** slow...
