- dudley, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Is it me or is the only purpose of linux to put it on some new inane device? Seriously, I see three or four article a week on how someone got linux to run on something new. Linux on an iBook, linux on an iPod, linux on a turtle... will it ever end? I like Windows but you don't see me trying to install it on my car stereo!
- SupaDawg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I cant see why... but whatever works for ya. I guess it's the never ending quest to get linux to boot on anything. Wanna port linux to my toaster oven?
lol. j/k ... still neat.
+digg - SupaDawg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Dudley... you can get some car stereo's with windows mobile integrated on a tiny screen. I think Clarion makes one. heh

LOL, that's just wrong. Windowz is everywhere! - nouhad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol keep hacking it silly :)
- deaper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ok why? I'm all for free software on all sorts of devices but the chance that they'll be able to make the phone feature of the treo work under linux are slim to none (unless palm was incredibly dumb in implementing the phone feature which I doubt). And what's the point in paying $300 for a cell phone that can't be used as a cell phone? But then again considering the dude is smart enough to get linux to work on a device that wasn't intended to run linux, he's obviously smarter than me and maybe he sees something that I don't.
- mooninite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now, dudley... based on your tone... why is it a *bad* thing to put an OS that you can completely customize on any electronic device known to man? And it's "OK" when Windows does it?
*sniff*
I smell... fanboy. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, Dudley, what are you even doing on a tech site in the first place?
You don't get why someone would hack a device just for the joy of hacking it? - dudley, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0"Now, dudley... based on your tone... why is it a *bad* thing to put an OS that you can completely customize on any electronic device known to man? And it's "OK" when Windows does it?

LOL, yes, I am a fan of Windows. I just don't see the point on installing it on anything I can think of. It's just... pointless. - Hattrick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't think I would have the balls to nuke a 650. They ain't cheap.

- Porsche944, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Another uselss use for Linux. Why is the linux community wasting their time with this. Shouldn't they be spending time making the OS easier to use and more standardized so they can compete against microsoft. Sure Linux has it's uses and is a great OS if you know what you are doing and is many ways is better then windows. But, it's not easy to use and 95% of the users out there don't want to spend time learning something complex like linux. With all this brain power behind linux why are they installing it on cell phones (which have no functionality and won't even load the kernel all the way) and work on some real issues with linux.
- oringo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Quoting suprdawg: "Wanna port linux to my toaster oven? "
Well... not exactly linux....but netbsd has been put on a toaster already. Here's the link: http://www.embeddedarm.com/news/netbsd_toaster.htm - h0dg3s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Boring. Gonna go hack myself a sandwich then hack out a few emails before hacking a soda and hacking my car to work.

All windows fanboys go here!
I like linux, but I see very little use putting it on a phone, that may never be able to be used as a phone again. However there is some great software out there that will make it into a MUCH better pda then palm or MS could ever right, mainly because there aren't any restrictions to it. - rc_collins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My wife has a vibrator that runs Linux. It is great, I can surf the web while working her over.
--dan - splendid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OK folks, Linux on a Treo isn't just i nice play thing for hackers entertain them. For about a year I've been running OpenWrt (http://www.openwrt.org) on my LinkSys WRT54G wireless router.
As well as being able to install lots of common Linux networking packages (nmap, kismet etc) there are also custom written ones just for the WRT54G.
My cheap $50 wireless router is now running as a complete server for my home network. It has a RADIUS server for wireless authentication (even better than WPA) and a fully customizable DHCP server (can route data through an alternate gateway without configuration on the client). It could also perform other useful stuff such as a mail or web server. Its not slow either at 200MHZ which is more than enough. $50 for a tiny, fanless, wireless Linux server seems like a bargain to me.
Now I know I've gone totally off topic here but my point is once Linux, or any open source OS, is on a device it drives the hacker community to make it do things the manufacturers could never think of, or want to do, for marketing/sales reasons.
I can already think of hundreds of uses for having Linux on a Treo. Yeah it might cost $300 but why not get your moneys worth with all the extra functionality you'll get.
To Deaper: If you read the article he mentions that the phone can be interfaced with standard modem AT commands. I reckon phone calls won't be a problem at all. - dylanA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0your moms running linux.
- mrpinto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dudley,
Does your iPod play FLAC or OGG? Put Linux on it and it will!
Does your Linksys router let you run hundreds of industry standard network-related programs? Put Linux on it and it will!
Can you write software for your Treo with common libraries and a well-known platform? Put Linux on it and you could!*
~P
Not that *you* could, but someone else... If you were a developer, I'd be stunned. - dudley, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0"Dudley,

First of all, I don't own an iPod. Second, FLAC and OGG files are only needed if you run Linux, which I do not. Third, Linksys sucks, get a D-Link. Fourth, I don't give a ***** about linux or it's libraries, or the fact that linux will run on it. Finally, you're an *****. - mrpinto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dudley... truth comes out then: you're clueless!
-So you don't have an iPod. You probably don't have a Treo either. Or a Linksys. I was using "your" as a literary device as in "if you had this thing, you could use Linux to do this other thing with it." Your problem was that you didn't understand why others would want to install Linux. Obviously *you* specifically wouldn't want to: you clearly lack the technical sophistication to do so or to make doing so worthwhile. I'm attempting to explain why *others* might want to. I don't really care what *you* specifically have. This is about what *we* have, or might be convinced to purchase.
-FLAC is lossless. It's needed if you want high-quality audio. OS is not an issue. FLAC is better quality than Mp3 or Ogg or WMA on Windows just as it is on Linux or Mac.
-OGG is OS-independent as well. It's value is that it's free (as in liberty) whereas mp3 is not. It's also supposed to be smaller for the same quality.
-Of course Linux can play mp3s. Your suggestion that someone would "need" FLAC or OGG because of Linux suggests further ignorance.
-I own a Linksys and a D-link. They're both working fine. That said, Linksys ~= Cisco and Cisco runs the 'net. Cisco probably knows what they're doing.
Your free to do what you want and more power to you if you learn something today. That said, if trolling is your game just save yourself some embarrassment and go somewhere where your combination of balls-out attitude and lack of technical knowledge are better appreciated. =)

Nah, you can't embarrass me... I like to ruffle feathers. It's my thing. As for my technical knowledge, that's something that I really don’t put out there... You don't know if I'm being ignorant by choice or if I am truly ignorant. I'm just out here to shake things up a bit.
Anyway, it seems like a lot of people equate technical knowledge to penis size, so the more you know, the more I wonder if you're compensating for a lack of something.
Just a thought. - dudley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0P.S. mrpinto, even though you used a '=)' you're still an *****.

Well, I hope you're not a gambling man, because you would loose. And at least I can spell. Sod off. - mrpinto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@dudley:
Signs you've lost an argument:
1)You suggest that maybe you were wrong "on purpose"
2)You start attacking your opponent rather than his points
3)You start attacking technicalities rather than real issues.
For you, that's
1) "Maybe I'm ignorant on purpose." Fine. I said that you can go elsewhere if you're just a troll. I've found that most cranky little trolls get put to bed by their mothers around late evening. At least we have that to look forward to.
2) Technical knowledge vs penis size? Are you sure that you're not compensating for being an idiot by bringing genitalia into a conversation about electronics?
3) Finally, you are critical of someone else's spelling. To twist the quote, @arcanelinux might have some typos and you have little knowledge of technology or debate. Tomorrow he can use spell check. Your issue seems more permanent...
Based on this analysis, I think I'm done here. You're welcome to stay and collect whatever glory you can through trolling. Maybe you can insult somebody's mother or something. My advice for you though is to print this thread out and save it until you grow up. Wait until your late 20's* or so and then read your own words again. You'll feel awful silly...
