- shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -3/+49only after we upgrade to a dx10 compatible video card and double our RAM....
- aroedl, on 10/12/2007, -6/+44Another two or three years and we'll see those features in Vista!
- JerMe, on 10/12/2007, -13/+47Unless the touchscreen monitor is cleanly installed in the dashboard of a car, don't post anymore of these Xgl/Compiz+touchscreen videos. All the guy does is rotate the damn cube and wiggle the windows around. We're trying to PROMOTE Xgl/Aiglx/Compiz, not irritate the masses with these lame videos.
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Thank you for not whistling this time.
- tomokatsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Well, apart from the pleasant visuals, the technology allows you to offload much of the processing power that would have previously been drawn from your CPU, onto your GPU which is often idle when doing day-to-day work/ activities. Thus it frees up your CPU to do more number crunching elsewhere/ for other programs. However, the technology does require a decent video processor else that should become the major bottle neck.
- whiskeymb, on 10/12/2007, -11/+22I've said this before about XGL and hopefully someone will have a good answer this time, what is the point?! I mean, it's eyecandy and that's it, right? can anyone explain to me what practical purpose this serves? how does it increase productivity?
don't get me wrong, I think it's pretty impressive visually, but all the videos I've seen seem to just show off a spinning cube desktop and some stetching abilities. if these are meant to sell me on switching to XGL (which could be just a poor assumption), then I need an explination for why this affects me in anyway. I tried that LiveCD a week ago after the last XGL video was posted on digg and I got bored after about 5 minutes.
I mean, the summary itself says "what is possible"... to me all I see here is some slight eye candy, that doesn't exactly sell me on the "possibilities" of XGL. Can ANYONE tell me a productive use of this technology?
or maybe this video is in the same category as the mouse in a bottle video... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I persoanlly thought it was cool.. and he did a bit more, like bend the windows.. the only thing i noticed was how deliberate his movements were which suggested to me that it is kind of buggy, that if he didnt move slowly it could easily screw up.
Maybe i am wrong on that but it is a new thing anyway..still pretty cool
I really seee this changing the very way we interface with the computer, right now it looks a bit limited as it is being built on top of a desktop designed for mouse keyboard but i can see it becoming much more amazing. - hbweb500, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Compiz includes plugins which are as purposeful as they are appealing. One provides the ability to see all windows on the desktop at the same time, much like OSX's "expose". This enables one to easily switch between applications by viewing a thumbnail of each.
Also, Compiz makes the UI much more intuitive. How so? Well, the "state" plugin allows windows not in use to be shaded or see-through. This makes it easier to pick out the window in use.
Also, I found problems with flickering and slow graphics on the Xorg XServer. AIGLX is much faster on my intel video laptop. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12For one thing, instead of minimizing a window if you want to peak at what's underneath it, you could either reduce it's opacity or pull the side over.
- luciferin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@LaughingMan: The rotating cube is merely an effect, you can still switch between desktops in the same way, or turn of the cube effect and use virtual desktops normally. Everything you see is configurable.
It also adds window stacking options like OS X's Expose does and (I find) has quicker response than the current X server does. Once it's more mature and officially released I believe it will have many more productive effects in it.
I guess it's not for everyone. I know there are still some people that will question the productivity increase of using a graphical environment instead of command line. - shakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@LaughingMan11
Ctrl-Alt Down unfolds the cube so you can see all sides at once. The Expose-like feature has an option to show apps organized by which side of the cube they're on, so you can see live previews of every app running on every side of the cube at once.
There are tons of little things that make using Compiz really productive. I've also used transparent windows a lot. By holding Alt and using the mouse wheel I can make the active window just light enough to see the text below it. - upsilonh24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7What the ***** are you talking about? XGL? Obsolete? You must be joking...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The issue we have with Vista's eye candy is its system requirements, which, if you havent seen, can be quite steep. Plus, it just doesnt look as good as this.
XGL effects, on the other hand, can run on pretty low end graphics hardware. I once tested a kororaa XGL livecd using a geforce2mx and it worked fantastic. - stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Miguel de Icaza, one of the developers of Gnome (also well-known for Mono and Ximian) said that after using XGL for a month, he can't go back. You can read more about his thoughts here:
http://tirania.org/blog/archive/2006/Aug-18-1.html - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Obviously you have no clue what you're talking about. The flash plugin exists for linux, but its only flash7. Thus, we linux users can see the video just fine. What linux users have been asking for (concerning the linux+flash stories here on digg) is flash8 and flash9 support, which will be coming soon.
- merdiesel, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10This could take internet porn to an extreme!
Digg+ - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It may seem like just eye-candy but in addition to the expose-like feature, it also provides excellent user feedback. Feedback is often overlooked and could be something as simple as the way Apple used to flash the text of an icon to confirm it was double-clicked. It's probably one of the most unused concepts in Windows/Linux, but it makes the user experience that much better.
- dancpsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Having the 3D card take over some of the window drawing is a good thing. 3D cards have lots of memory now and the CPU can do other things. Extra features other than eye candy are being able to see windows very quickly (as in expose for the mac). Semitransparent windows for keeping track of other items, bending windows to see behind them quickly so switching back and forth from a reference to your work is easier, and flipping windows to a backside for preferences (like dashboard, but would require some application changes to work with XGL). Other things like accessability could be done easier by quickly increasing the size of a whole window without an external magnifying application.
Things that would be really nice (although I'm not sure if XGL would help these) are accelerated vector icons and font rendering, and accelerated vector image viewing for things like maps. - trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Mostly it is just eye candy but their are some other nice things about it. For one, it has its own version of Exposé which allows you to see all the windows on either the current application, or the current workspace, or all windows, from all workspaces at once, that can be tremendously time saving depending on how much you multitask. Aside from that, it makes use seem more enjoyable and somehow less mechanical, I find that I can program comfortably longer because of that feel, anything that makes working on the computer more enjoyable helps your productivity, I find I am much less frustrated ( and have fewer headaches because of it ) when using XGL. And anybody that gets migraines can tell you it is less than helpfull when you are trying to get work done
- ryanlive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What are you talking about? Flash is easily installed and is pre-installed on most modern Linux distributions including SLED 10, which is what I'm using.
You must be uneducated regarding the current state of Linux or just spreading FUD. - a1lostnomad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think that the haters out there are missing the point of XGL and especially touchscreen displays. This is about providing users with a tactile computing experience in which they can directly and physically alter their enviroment and get real time feedback in doing so. Once this technology is pollished up and made available to mainstream consumers it will be a revolutionary improvement in the way humans interact with machines and data.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Cool video, godawful music.
- doodlebumm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7For those who think touch screens are not for the masses, think ...KIOSK... :) I think most people would be completely blown away if they saw this in the mall - not that they'd know what they were doing with it... :) :) :)
- jbus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There's a compiz plugin that allows for multiple backgrounds... This guy just doesn't have it installed or configured.
- vbsurfer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Cool to look at but very impractical. You try holding up your hand up to your monitor and try surfing the web longer than ten minutes. Instead of carpul tunnel, we'll be seeing rotator cuff tunnel.
It would be easy to have these gestures for mouse clicks. - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4you mean linux users can't watch this video with the sound properly synched.
- Snakedal337, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Because XGL isnt nearly as system heavy as Vista is.
It wont run on a P3 with integrated video, but it will run on most modern day systems, without an upgrade. In some case, you may need a video card.
You may keep your RAM upgrade. - colklink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2damnit...who let this guy in here! Someone's supposed to be checking aluminum hats at the door!
- M4v3rIC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have to admit, this stuff is PRETTY cool, but touchscreens already had their chance, and "Gorilla Arm" is what came of it. Nobody wants to spend hours with their hands levitating in the air playing a game, or drawing, whatever they do. The only good i see out of this is movin' the sweet ass cube.
This still gets a digg for interesting and innovative tech. - vince1731, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6They spent too much time playing with the "flubber" aspect... I don't care if I can stretch a window with my finger!
Cool stuff, but poorly presented. - Smwbigboss, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"I mean, the summary itself says "what is possible"... to me all I see here is some slight eye candy, that doesn't exactly sell me on the "possibilities" of XGL. Can ANYONE tell me a productive use of this technology?"
I guess if you put another monitor on top, you could make a pretty kickass DS emulator. - Crypty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's a real touch screen. The cube isn't tilting with his hand, his hand is tilting with the cube.
- AceTracer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Another XGL movie with ***** techno music?
- Crass22, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"This is about providing users with a tactile computing experience in which they can directly and physically alter their enviroment and get real time feedback in doing so."
the mouse ive owned all these years feels pretty darn tacticle and directly physical (ie i move my hand up, cursour goes up, all in real-time) this is just a gimmick for linux, like aero is a gimmick for windows. - DaMacGamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1great, know how much is a touch screen lcd gona run me?
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think this works well playing RTS games like the video of him playing Starcraft. Having extra hands would translate into overall faster response, especially to attack. The problem with the mouse is that you really can only do one thing at a time. He was selecting his units and assigning tasks almost simultaneously. The time it takes to get to the area of the screen you want to click on is almost eliminated as well.
- BassJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@whiskeymb , sorry it's a long way down! I know XGL/Compiz is eye candy, but on the right system it can perform quite well and besides all this eye candy developers add to OS's is purely an optional thing, we're not saying you have to use it, but it's there if you want it! If your really not bothered about how your desktop looks don't use XGL and use something simpler and more productive like regular Gnome, KDE or Fluxbox!
Besides every new OS's just basically adds more eye candy without directly effecting productivity in a huge way, just look at all the effects M$ is building into Vista! How many people are going to get bored with them after 5 minutes? Assuming of course they have a powerful enough computer to run them :-P - oldman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Please stop pissing about what people like to read about and just don't read these stories yourself. Maybe that'll help EVERYONE enjoy Digg!
- Crass22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1how does he switch between squads with his hands only approach, i gotta agree with crypty though you usually use ur keyboard, i mean how many commands do u gotta remember for starcraft, like 3?
- bobbourland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@whiskeymb The exposé feature is pretty handy and wtf is wrong with eye candy...I bet you only look for productivity in women too.
- Snakedal337, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree on ubuntu
Your welcome - epohs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1One thing that can be intimidating to a new user is how alien the computer landscape can feel.
If XGL can help make the desktop function more like familiar real life objects, by casting shadows, and rotating and bending when moved then it could, if implemented intelligently, be all the more inviting to someone who is very new to using a computer as a tool. - TheTankengine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1AIGLX and XGL have nothing to do with distro (other than Fedora, but that is a whole different matter). I put XGL on my laptop with nvidia card and Ubuntu 6.06 and it runs great. When I finally convinced my mom to ease out of her spy-ware infested windows world, i put Ubuntu and AIGLX on her desktop with integrated Intel graphics.
The difference between the two really has to do with the power of the graphics card, and what hardware can support direct and indirect rendering.
Check out this article to see some differences discussed:
http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/articles/accelerated_x - Crypty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Of course normally you use the keyboard to assign tasks which I'd bet is actually faster than using 2 hands.
- merdiesel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"I have to admit, this stuff is PRETTY cool, but touchscreens already had their chance, and "Gorilla Arm" is what came of it. Touch screen technology is anything but over, a little piece of hardware that goes by the name DSlite proves that. - spriggig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I could see spinning the cube to switch between users, which I do a lot of at home with four of us sharing this box. But, of course, I'd need a machine that could run multiple users simultaneously without bogging down.
How about spinning the cube to switch between computers, like a kvm switch? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1someone buy this guy an iTunes Music Store card so he can at least give us some decent music
- damentz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He's talking about the hype and how more perfected software will overcome it, AIGLX will probably be the new hype since it supports accelerated rendering under it. Gentoo fans apparently are already using it as this wikipedia quote states.
"Some users have also reported success in running AIGLX (and Compiz) on Ubuntu 6.06, the 'Dapper Drake' release, although Xgl remains a far more popular choice amongst the Ubuntu community. Gentoo users have installed AIGLX using the modular X.Org 7.1 release and a few custom ebuilds." - statmobile, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Hahaha, I agree. Much better to use music than hear him swear and whistle a pitiful tune.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I want to see an XGL Video that actually shows off someone working or doing something I might do.
