- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -35/+82I have the complete list of linux games right here, no need to read the article:
10. pacman
9. astroids
8. tetris
7. pacman deluxe
6. gimp
5. recompiling your kernal
4. emacs
3. slashdot
2. snes9x
1. tetris - aahpandasrun, on 10/12/2007, -10/+51Mahjongg?
Battle for Wesnoth?
Neverputt?
these are the best you can come up with? I think you proved the opposition's point. - PatrickFisher, on 10/12/2007, -7/+38From the article: "If you enjoy playing with balls, then Neverball should be right up your alley."
Wow... Thank you for turning me off of that game! - Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29Alien Arena 2007? Tremulous? Warsow?
- dscottp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28No love for Tux Racer?
- Spudgy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24IMO Linux advocates do more harm than good with articles like this.
Best FREE games is the problem. Free games for windows are about the same, but promoting linux as a gaming OS with mundane crap like Mahjongg is ridiculous when you're going to be compared to commercial windows titles.
Doom 3, NWN, UT2004, Quake 4, Savage 2, Americas Army. Those are the kind of titles that prove linux is a viable gaming platform since they run equal to their windows version on the same hardware. - EasY_TargeT, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24and where was quake 3 on that list?
- SirNuke, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16@ImTheDarkcyde
What difference does that make? If you made a top 100 list of PC games, could you not include both Half-Life and Counterstrike because they use the same game engine?
I'm rather disappointed by the lack of Tremulous. - Tyr7BE, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/

Amazing game. - mozzep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Wesnoth is pretty good. You don't need great graphics to make a game that's involving and interesting to play. At least try it if you haven't.
- GorGenator, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Your retarded. I'm a Windows ONLY user, but you're just an idiot. There's no excuse for ignorance. There's an assload of games that run on Linux... Hell, I'd go with a 'nix box if I wasn't so lazy.
- jackhole, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I do so look forward to reading this article every six weeks.
- pauldonnelly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@ kra....
The author only seems to care about free-as-in-beer. Possibly you should RTFA. - gharding, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Yeah, it's gotten diluted recently. It's pretty hard to find a mod-less server running vanilla maps. I tried to play it yesterday and it took a good 15-20 minutes to try and find a server that would let me download the mods it needed in a reasonable amount of time.
Still, it's one of my favorite games. - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Freespace2!
Former Windows game thats gone open source w/ updated graphics and all.
Info here

Its community run, Voltiion ( Big [V]) gave up on FS2 a while back.

Go to bottom for updated graphics as of 2 updates ago.
Join in the community. We need new blood to continue modding.
Some great mods coming out of FS2 are Beyond the Red Line, a BSG mod, Shadows of Lylat, a starfox mod, and a wing commander mod, a Babylon 5 mod, a stargate mod, and others.
Great game, easily moddable,
Available for Windows, OSX, Linux. Linux and OSX still in beta though.
It was the last great space sim before the silence, until today. - sonofalink, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9So CoD and WoW are free now?
- grapeape25, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Enemy Territory has great gameplay but every time I want to join a server I have to download like 100 maps and it takes forever... it's fun but seems really unorganized.
- erkokite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8AH... the sweet smell of modding down a flagrant troll. Smells kinda like burning toast, or maybe that's my heater. Die troll, die!
- dmsteg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9That's all well and good, but for some reason I have this strange urge to purchase a Barracuda 320GB hard drive or an e-GeForce 7600.
- rhettnyedotorg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8scorched 3d?
- hexydes, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13@hammydude: I rarely LOL on Digg (like, for real LOL), but "Recompiling your kernel" got me. Well-played, sir. :)
+dugg - idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Yeah, all the games listed on that site suck. This LiveDVD gives you a better example:
http://www.tuxmachines.org/node/6136
Also, linux gets great support from id software, and epic's unreal tournament guys - MrTea, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@hammydude
You forgot about vim. - tropican8, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6No Tremulous? No BZFlag? No Tuxracer? Considering Tuxracer is the most downloaded game on Sourceforge, Tremulous is the largest OSS online game (AFAIK), and BZFlag is the 2nd largest, I would say me along with a lot of other people disagree with this ranking.
- wabbiteh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I really wish someone would take up that project again - it died off a while ago, along with planetpenguin racer (an attempted revival of tuxracer). Makes me wish I knew how to program well enough to keep it going.
- kryptobs2000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I don't get all the negative comments. No one is claiming these games are amazing or will rival windows games, but they can be alot of fun, and what everyone seems to be overlooking the developers don't get paid ***** for this, the games are totally free.
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Hey, there's almost more question marks than letters there!
- joepaterno, on 10/12/2007, -45/+49Maybe the title should have been "All Ten Linux Games".
- DarkStalker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I seem to remember this same page being posted once before and hitting the front page, maybe a month ago.
Anyways, some good games on the list. - Spo8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm a Linux user and love it as an operating system, but come on. Any "greatest games" list that includes Mahjongg just isn't going to help your case.
- Falcorian, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11Hammy, what about man page reading! I spend hours playing that game!
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Yeah, but then again, before that, it was full of servers running all the SAME maps... equally boring!
- ggko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3As I commented the last time this list was posted:
KMahjongg ≠ Mahjongg.
no digg ... since it already dugg it the last time around. ;) - Xilon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Holy ***** these games suck! There are way better games then this for Linux...
- weasel75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Guys, dont forget that this is "free games" only.
UT200x, Quake I-IV, Doom I-III, Neverwinter Nights - just to name some more games which run native under the Linux. I will not start with wine, but if you are really into gaming - Linux *can* still be an alternative .... question is, how much trouble and/or performance-loss you are willing to accept ;-)
PS: The list for top-ten free games for Windows wouldn't look much better.... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2frozen bubble! w00t!
- neko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just go hunt around happypenguin.org, there's lots more than this, more interesting ones too.
- javaroast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I use linux, but this piece of blogspam is so poorly written and researched that it deserves what ever negatives can be thrown at it.
- raptor87, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3do kismet and ethereal count as games?
- OneAndOnlySnob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I don't think it was like "Hey, come use Linux and check out our AWESOME GAMES." I thought it was more like "Hey, you use Linux (whatever your reasons are). Did you know about these games? They're a pretty good diversion!"
Nobody is claiming Linux is as good a gaming OS as Windows. I'm not anyway. But these games are fun and I do keep myself busy with NES and SNES games and other console games anyway.
PS. This has been on the Digg at least 15 times. Christ. - ku16610, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2didnt we have this last week ?
- wonkavsn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nice! It's the weekly "Top Ten Linux Games" article on digg.
I've been waiting all week for this! - spafbnerf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this was posted about a month ago? furthermore this list really suxx - the author clearly either didn't put in much effort or was relatively clueless. as neko said, spend some time browsing happypenguin.org , there are much better games to be found ....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's possibly the most sorry-assed top ten of games I've _ever_ seen.
- rooneyet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It actually the same site that has came up 2 or 3 times. The games are not even that great they are fun for a couple of days and every couple of weeks/months/years. I prefer browser based games but thats just me. (Until Guild Wars works with Wine.)
- Scatropolis, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10Agreed. While these might be 10 "good" games.....They're far from "great"
- MrTea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Planet Penguin Racer you mean?
I thought it was pretty boring. There isn't even any racing going on. Just Tux tobogganing around doing stunts. - spisska, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Maybe a bit old school, but where's the Wing Commander Privateer remake?
Damn good game.
http://wcuniverse.sourceforge.net/ - namtellum, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4As a ubuntu user with an aging computer I'll take what I can get. Some of the shooters look decent, I'll have to check them out.
- Cheeseness, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Huzzah for Neverball
This list has been around for a while. I'm still sad to see that Tremulous isn't there, FlightGear is totally ignored, ManiaDrive isn't on the list, etc. etc. etc. -
